Yeah, I also learned about that the hard way. I once tripped over the carpet on my way into a room where my tiny Sony laptop was on and waiting for me, and splashed water all over it. I freaked and sent it to Sony repair, and they told me it needed a new motherboard, which would cost $800. The laptop was 3 years old at the time, so I just bought a new one, though I couldn't afford it, and told Sony to send the old one back unrepaired. A week later, I tried to turn it on just to see if I could get it up long enough to get data off my hard drive, and it WORKED! Of course, I don't know how much longer it would have worked before rust from the spill corroded the circuits, but at the time I was a little upset that I had just spent so much on a new one.
Another time I put my cell phone in the washing machine, and again, 3 days later, after a thorough drying-out, it worked, and this time it worked for 2 more years, with the only damage being a slightly sticky #9 key.
Since then, I've read that the key to preserving any possible recovery of a wet laptop is NOT to turn it on until it's completely dried out, and to take out and wipe off any removable parts, including battery, hard drive, memory chips, and keyboard keys, as soon as you can.
And, of course, you shouldn't eat or drink or put glasses or bottles down near a laptop. But ** does happen.
And the reason I didn't suggest going to Apple straight off is exactly what other people said -- the spill will void your warranty, and repair is likely to be as expensive as a new computer.

Yesterday i accidentally spilled soda in my macbook air . Inmediatly it turned off. I started drying it until theres was no water left. I turned it on and it worked perfectl everythong functioned. I chargedit and it worked bit today i tridd to charge it didnt worked?

dont turn it on, water / liquids migrate.
Turning it back on is BAD, damage A can lead to B leads to C etc.
Also water migrating around, especially while on, can wreck havoc worse than initial damage.
Nobody here can speculate on damage on something they cannot see.
Having repaired laptops in the past, even IF you got it completely dry, residue from water (iron particles etc), and wet spots under fine contacts is nearly impossible to "dry out", its just doesnt work that way.
Lots of people try to "dry it out", most to learn little was solved in doing same, and sometimes further damage occurred.
Taking it apart, youll just about never "dry out it out" due to the all the hidden spots that will REMAIN wet for some time, even IF you dry to "dry it out"
Make appt. with Apple store fore repair / diagnostic.

I spilled soda on my Macbook Pro and now my homerow keys short/stop working

As to the title, I spilt soda (Mt.Dew) on my keybored and part of my left speakers the 2nd day I had it. My homerow keys do not work sometimes. I cleaned it like some of the forum topics have said to do and that helped for the first semester I had it. Now that it's second semester, the keys are shorting out on me more often. What can I do to fix this problem. I would say my warranty doesn't cover it because Ihave tried cleaning it myself. Any help would be appreciated.

You should do what you should have done when it happened. Take it in to an Apple service center. Either they can clean it properly or, more than likely, replace the keyboard assuming there's no other damage. It will not be covered under warranty.

Spilled soda near my Macbook

Alright so I was using my macbook to charge my iphone, while I was on my bed. So, my macbook was on the ground while it was charging. I also left a pepsi down there which I happened to knock down but didn't notice. About 2 minutes later I notice that it had actually spilled onto the ground near my macbook, I have no idea what happened but my macbook turned off. When I plug in the charger without a battery, it goes green and goes orange when charging the battery. But, my macbook won't just turn on, I immediately removed the battery and charger and left it for about 2 days and still no luck. Please, I would like assistance, since this is not my own laptop but the one that my school owns.

As jxs2 mentioned, if you purchased the Geek Squad Protection plan they should be able to service it. Just take it to your local Best Buy store to the Geek Squad precinct. I spilled soda on my laptop on the mousepad

Hi
I spilled soda on my macbook pro on the mousepad. I had a keyboard protector so fortunately, that's ok.
As soon as it spilled, I turned my laptop off and wiped the soda away. Should I do something else?
My keys aren't sticky or anything but I am just worried...

do not turn it on and take to to an apple store or AASP for evaluation. even the smallest liquid spill can result in VERY expensive repairs.

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

Please help! Spilled water on opened MacBook and kept it on for 3 hours!

Okay...so today I was just setting up my printer and I accidentally spilled water onto my MacBook keyboard and the top hung where all the holes are. I immediately rubbed all the water off but I left it on. I didn't know what'll happen. I left my MacBook on sleep, but closed and inserted into y laptop case. After I finished cleaning my room, I decided to restart my MacBook (after 3 hours) BUT it didn't restart. I did look at others post but couldn't find someone's problem he same as mine. I tried bootin it over and over again. No response whatsoever...and what's worse, it's only 2 weeks old. Please help , I don't know what to do:(

Well, I don't know if you brought it in to the apple store yet, but if you did, I'm sure they told you they would fix it for a $755 flat fee. Since your liquid sensors were probably tripped, your warranty is basically void, at least for this instance.
You can diagnose the problem yourself though. Although from the sounds of it the worst probably happened, you can do a few things to check out if you have any hope.
You dont need to "bring it to the apple store" to figure out whats wrong with it as many others have told you is your only option. The service manual that an apple technician uses to diagnose and fix the macbook pros is readily available online.
If you don't want to spend money and your insurance won't cover this here is what you should do.
First check and see if the battery is acting normally, as in it charges and if you press the indicator button it shows you how full it is. If it is working, you are one step closer to being lucky, if its not, don't expect this next step to work unless you are even more lucky. Now take off the bottom case and try to dry any remaining water with a fan or low heat hairdryer. You might even want to wait another week for it to dry. If you are really ambitious you can buy some electrical contact cleaner and do the same and wait another few more days.
Then, on the bottom left on the logic board, near the keyboard connector are 2 larger silver pads. They usually have a power symbol next to them. Mine look like this
They are to the left of the tiny capacitor things and underneath the chip, basically dead center in the picture. Now you want to take a fork, or paperclip, and touch it to one or both of these "pads" (I only had to touch one of them). If you are really lucky, the machine will power on. If it doesn't, disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable which is right next to it and try it again. If it doesn't work, your logic board is most likely dead. If it does power on and your trackpad works, that means you need a new keyboard/power button. (those two are one in the same in a macbook pro) You can buy a replacement keyboard for $50 and while it is not easy to replace, it is not impossible and you could probably find someone to do it for less than $755.
Hopefully yours isn't too different. mine is a late 2010.

Spilled soda on macbook, stopped working and now working again?

So a couple months ago I spilled orange soda on my Macbook air. Its the late 2011 I think.
It stopped working completely and the batteries were ruined. I took it to geek squad and when they tried to boot it, it said it could not find start up disk.
This morning I tried to turn it on, and it is working just fine! It isnt running slowly or anything. One of my friends said that there is corrosion though and it will stop working again. is this true? I hate getting rid of my poor mba but if its not going to work I might as well sell it for parts, right?

Several years ago I sent a computer across the continent (N.A.)
via the US Post Office, for repairs; the company was one I'd read
about in the 1990s and they still are in business. They can also
do much more now than they did back then. They do sonic cleaning
and can take-apart, repair, etc nearly any portable Apple. However
my experience is limited with portable Macs, I don't see anyone out
here in Alaska with equipment or know-how to actually repair them.
Most only forward them to other States, and add a premium to cost.
Though I have no affiliation with them, this company still gets good
reviews and is a repair facility. They also have very many Apple parts.

Spilled soda on Macbook

I spilled soda on the floor and it reached my laptop, I was unaware of this so for about an hour it was left there. When I noticed I quickly took the case off and dried it. No soda got to the key board however it might have gotten to the sides of the laptop. I took the battery out and dried that, although it was not very wet only a few drops under neath. It has full battery and the battery still works. Also when I put the battery back in, on the laptop there is a small light that glows which usually indicates the laptop is on. But the screen is black. For all I no it could be dead but if anyone can help I could really use it!! Thanks

Hey- something similar just happened to me as well. I was wondering what ended up happening for you. Hope it worked out. I took mine apart a bit. There's no visible soda anywhere. I took it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and the guy said he couldn't see any liquid damage either, but it'd cost $749 to fix... so I'm tryting to do stuff on my own.
After getting rid of some dust, I put a hairdryer on it for a few minutes. Now I'm just letting it sit; apparently, trying to turn it on right away is really bad, so I am going to let it sit in a "warm, ventilated area (like the top of a refridgerator)" for 2-3 days.
Let me know how it turned out for you- hopefully it went well.
BTW Camera Obscura... is that referring to the band? Haha, if so, I love them!

Spilled soda on my wife's macbook...and

I bought my wife a macbook last year in August.
And yesterday I spilled soda all over the keyboard.
The laptop stayed on, so I turned it off right away.
So I turned it upside down to get the soda out.
Then I took a damp rag to get it from getting too sticky.
And let it dry out upside down for a full day.
And when I went to to turn it on,
it would boot up to the apple logo..and then just go into sleep mode.
Never got to the desktop.
Ran the hardware test off the restore cd, and it says all is ok.
But learned my mouse click is not working, but the keyboard keys are working
so I managed to get thru the hardware test ok.
So now what..?
I'm thinking of cracking this thing open...
Anybody have any recommendations?

YouTube has videos on how to take the MacBook apart. It is not terribly difficult.
Electronic circuit boards can be washed if you take care not to submerse any components that would not take submersion. I haven't had my keyboard off yet so I cannot tell you from experience on this model if there are any parts that won't stand submersion in water. I have had other computer circuit boards that I have successfully washed and dried. Remember, the stickey residue has to be removed, not just wiped up.
Anyway, the keyboard itself is likely going to have sticky residue in its electrical contact area. It would be best to completely disassemble it, key by key, until you get it disassembled as far as it can go then wash the components in water and do a final rinse in disstilled water. It is imperative that you have the layers with the electrical contacts separated for cleaning and drying as anything wet between the membranes will take forever to dry if they are not separated.
Again, I have not done this to the MacBook keyboard but I have don it to several different models of Mac Powerbooks and it works very well. It can be very time consuming due to the large number of tiny parts but it can also be very rewarding if you have the time and enjoy this kind of stuff.
Alternatively, you can buy a brand new MacBook keyboard/topcase assembly on ebay for $40 shipped.
If you are handy and enjoy this kind of stuff it is very doable and can be quite enjoyable. If you have it repaired professionally they will very likely sell you all new parts and that can get very expensive.

Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:

From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:

My MacBook Air wont turn on. HELP!

My MacBook Air wont turn on, I bought this past September (as a birthday gift for myself) and this Sunday I was using it perfectly, then at night it didn't turn on. I tried several times to turn it on and it did once, I thought "Yes finally" but two minutes later it turned off and never to turn on again. I have taken care of my mac book so much, that I really dont know whats wrong. I bought on I trip I did to the US and I live in Honduras, we don't have an Apple store here not even a Genius bar for me to go and see whats the problem, I thought this machines were for life, like I literally cried so bad because I had to work SO hard to buy this computer and now its just not working.. why? I dont know. If theres any tricks to making this turning back ON please let me know.

okay, since you are in Honduras, I'll share what my Genius told me when he reset the SMC on my 11 inch mid-2013 Mac Air yesterday. He took it in back of the Apple store, came back in about five minutes with everything working. I asked him if there was anything I had done to cause the problem, he said no, except it might be better to actually "shutdown" the computer from the Apple pull-down menu when you aren't going to use the machine for more than a couple of hours (e.g., overnight). If the instructions in Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support didn't work, As for self-repair, he said this is what you would have to do (but he also said, you really don't want to do this yourself): you have to remove the bottom of the Mac Air (under the keyboard), and disconnect the battery. Then, with the battery disconnected, you plug in the power cord attach it to the Air, and then turn on the computer from the keyboard on/off switch while powered only by the power supply. That should reset the SMC. Then shut down the system from the Apple menu (not the keyboard button/switch), reinstall the battery, replace the bottom/cover, and see if it works. Just remember that fiddling inside the back of a Mac can be dangerous to the Mac and your warranty! Good luck

I spilled soda all over my amcbook pro. I then cleaned it up and it was working perfectly until the z key started typing by itslef. Now the keys are in caps when they aren't supposed to be. Also, my laptop is in safemode. It will turn on and off, but I can't log in becasue of the key problems. What's wrong with my laptop? How can this be fixed? And what is safemode?

What's wrong? You spilled soda on it!!! Take it to an Apple Store ASAP before you cause any more damage. Be prepared for a big bill. Your warranty is now void.
