Spilled tea on my MacBook Pro while it was on.

OMG! 2 days ago. Will not boot - when I turn it on, the screen lights up, the boot sound announces and then... nothing but the sound of the logic board attempting connect through. Eventually a folder with a question mark displays on the screen.
So - I think I'm cooked. Now doing due diligence on a new model. Spoke with apple & suggested I might get my data off the hard drive by involking 'target disc mode' and linking a new MAC to the sad departed one.
Has anyone tried this? Do I need a MAC to MAC link to get the data?
I am 1 month out from my last back-up. have idisc. Worried about contacts and email records mainly. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

if you have a mobileme account. Your contacts may be on the me server, same with your me.com email to check go to http://www.me.com. click sign in, type in your mobile me email address and password. ones logged in click in you can see what email is on the server by clicking on the mail stamp. to see what addresses are on the server click on the address book.
if the contacts/email is on the server I can tell you how to sync them to your computer.
if the server dose not have your contacts/email. It's worth trying disk mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 explains how to boot a computer into disk mode. you do need a firewire cable to connect the two computers together.
if disk mode doesn't work
a service provider might be able to pull data off a hard drive even if disk mode dose not work. http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/ can be used to find an authorized service provider.
if a service provider can't get to the data
http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/ drive savers can recover data from many failed drives; but they're rather expensive.

Within the last hour, I noticed that my older MacBook Pro, while I was using iTunes, lost contrast on the screen.  I am sorry, but I did not take exact notes on this event.  Around the same time, I did do a back up, uploaded Apple software, etc.
I'm using two MacPros simultaniously, the old one for iTunes, and the new one for the other things.  My new one has no problems, so am wondering if there is an easy way to correct the older MacPro's contrast problems.  The computer is over three years old, and I'm wondering also if this failure is an aging sign.  (I also have other problems, such as a noisy DVD drive, which is part of the reason I bought a new MacBook Pro.)

Is the older MBP a pre-Unibody model from early 2008? If so, it could be having this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377
If so, you would be entitled to a free repair.
The lost contrast could be considered distorted video.
Do you have an external monitor? If the external shows the same lost contrast, the graphics chip is likely the culprit. If the external is OK, then you probably have an issue with the built in display or possibly with its connections.
You may also want to check in Universal Access to see if the contrast bar is set in its normal position (all the way to the left).
Apple has a special test they can run to diagnose the NVIDIA issue, so if you have access to an Apple Store, make an appointment at the genius bar to have it run.
    Good luck!

  • I spilled tea on my macbook pro last night and this morning i opened it and the fan began going loudly. It sounds like static. Is this a new thing to save itself?

I spilled my tea last night and a little got on my keyboard, by where the power cord plugs in. We immediately turned it upside down and of course dried off as much as possible. This morning, I tried turning it on and nothing happened. I waited a few minutes and tried again. The fan turned on, but nothing else. It sounds like static or white noise, but when you get closer you can feel the wind blowing from the fan. Is this a new self-saving thing? I just got it this year, 2014.

Turn it off now, it's damaged and the more you turn the power on the worse that can get.
Take it Apple, do not turn it on again.

  • Spilled water on Macbook pro while On.

So, spilled water on my macbook pro which was on then proceeded to shut off right after. This was last night, tried turning it on again today and still nothing. People have told me I need to take the battery out but I don't think you can do that with these computers? Help.

Just take it in for repair. Expect to pay a lot.

  • On my MacBook Pro, while using the windows side, I have no audio. Any suggestions

On my MacBook Pro while using the Windows hard drive, I have no audio. The icon shows that I should (no mute insignia).  Any thoughts what I might do to correct?

Whoa, I found the answer by clicking on one of the questions in the "More Like This" box to the right.  I do  wonder how to find that box before posting my dumb question.  The answer turned out to be checking the youtube volume control.  I turned that up and it solved the problem for Comast as well.

  • Connecting iMac Keyboard to Macbook Pro while using iMac as external display

I'm trying to using my iMac wireless keyboad for my macbook pro while my iMac is in external display mode but I can't get the keyboad to connect. I've tried disconnecting the wireless keyboard from my iMac but it won't go into target display mode without the keyboad. Can I used my iMac wireless keyboard with my Macbook pro while my iMac is being used as an external display?

No, not reliably.  If it's paired with both machines you can turn it off and turn it back on but it's a toss up which machine it will connect with.  If you took it to another room so the iMac didn't see it, you'd have to disconnect the minidisplay port/thunderbolt cable and then it would exit target mode display.

  • Close MacBook Pro while using MDP- HDMI adaptor ?

I have the Moshi MDP-HDMI adaptor. It works very well and transports audio well too.
I just want to know if it is possible to close the lid of the MacBook Pro while using MDP->HDMI adaptor ? (as in stopping it from going into sleep mode) So that it can be stowed neatly under the display unit when watching movies/presentations etc. rather than the lid having to be open a couple of inches...

That can be done but there are conditions that must be met. For example, the MBP needs to be plugged into its power adapter. And then an external keyboard and mouse are needed. See here:

  • I just spilled water on my macbook pro? What should I do?

I just spilled water on my macbook pro? What should I do?

    Hi j,
Shut it down, unplug it, and if it has a removable battery, remove it. After that, it becomes controversial. If possible, I believe in removing bottom cover and keyboard, then dabbing up any water that may have reached the "innards." After that, you can leave it open and point a fan at it for two days or so. Another option is to carefully position it in a bag of uncooked rice (so no rice will get inside it) and seal the bag, so the rice can absorb the water. Some people will tell you not to mess with it at all, just bring it to an Apple Store.

  • Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery

Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery, but goes back to normal while it's plugged into power source.  Battery life is still normal.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I just received my MBP Retina yesterday. I have not installed anything and the system is running so slow that when I type the text on the display is lagging behind my typing. Scrolling, app switching, etc. are all either choppy or I have to wait. Activity monitor shows kernal_task %CPU jumping between 500% to over 600% with 83 threads and about 675MB real memory. The fan is on continously, does not matter if it's plugged in or on the battery. NOT A GOOD FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE FOR ME.

For me, presonall, becasue the Mac will run OS X, while the windows machine will run, well, Windows.  Seriously, whenever given the option, I greatly prefer to use OS X over windows without hesitation.  I buy Apple hardware because I prefer OS X to Windows and have since the OS X public beta.  Apple hardware is very good quality, but so are many Windows PC (Lenovo IMO makes some great hardware, if picking a Windows machine).
I use windows at work because that's what they give me, but I'd not pick it if given the choice.

  • I spilled pop on my macbook pro, mostly on speakers and screen, however the macbook still works fine, should i contact them and ask what should i do or try to dry it off.....please help??

Hi , i spilled sprite on my macbook pro mostly onto speakers but however, i dried it off immideately and the macbook is working fine so far. Speakers still work normal but i am worried thatere might be some problems later on. Please suggest me some good ideas to furhter mae sure that the mac is fine?

I suggest that you take the MBP into an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.  There are liquid sensors inside and they should check if any have been activated.  This may give you a clue as to what you may expect regarding future reliability.
    Ciao.

  • I spilt tea on my macbook pro, left it to dry most of the day, but it seems to be working fine...is it really ok ?

I spilt tea on my macbook pro this morning.  I got it off instantly and have backed it up and left it stood on it's side ( I found that advice before I shut it down). I tried it a couple of times during the day and it worked fine.  I shut it down twice also and left it to dry.   It seems to be working fine now...but is it really ?  Have I done any damage that I need to get sorted out or is it really ok because I can use it as normal ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The logic board might be damaged or another part of your MacBook Pro. I recommend you to make a backup of your data and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller because your computer may fail at any moment.
You should do this to guarantee that your computer is safe. Furthermore, you may need a new computer if liquid has affected to a lot of parts, being cheaper a new Mac

  • I accidentally spilled tea on my macbook and the keyboard is sticky, I took off the key "A" and now I can't put it back on. What can I do or where can I take it so it can be fixed?

I accidentally spilled tea on my macbook and the keyboard is sticky, I took off the key "A" and now I can't put it back on. What can I do or where can I take it so it can be fixed?

So is that key the only thing that does not work? How much tea was spilled and did it dry out completely or ? Was there sugar in the tea?
If the key is the only thing, I'd take it to the nearest Genius Bar and ask if they could pop it back in.
