Spilled water on keyboard!  What now?!?

I spilled some water on my keyboard just now (using my son's computer to post)...I immediately mopped it up, but the computer shut down. It has tried to boot back up, but not successful. What do I do? Am I screwed?

Sorry, I'm an idiot - I made it sound like it was a detached keyboard on a Power Mac. I need to be over on the Powerbook G4 side. Thanks for your help, though, and if you have any advice about the Powerbook let me know!

  • I spilled water on keyboard but now it works fine- should I still bring it in to check if its completely ok?

I have spilled water on my Macbook Air keyboard. It switched off immediately by itself when this happened.  I kept it off, turned it upside down on top of a towel and left it in a dry place for 24hours. I turned it back on and it seems to be working fine..
Should I still take it into the store to check that it is completely ok?

Yes.  It certainly will not hurt to do so to have the technicians take a good look at it.  The evaluation will be free at an Apple store genius bar.
    Ciao.

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

  • Spill water on mac and now it randomly works

I spilled water on my macbook pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) about two days ago. I immediately put towel on my keyboard, unplugged and shut it down. I waited for about 36 hours until restarting. The first restarting is okay. Every part seems working well, except for the screen looks a bit weird at the beginning (the light of screen is in the middle of baby blue, gray and white), but then it turned to be the normal color. I was like "Oh My GOD, thank you so much." Then I shut it down. Three hours later, when I turned it on again, the screen was totally black and it comes with the noisy sound from system. Also, when I push the power, it does not sound right. The sound is supposed to be a long beep but now it is just a short beep. I was really desperate. But things changed again! Just 10 minutes ago, I tried to start it again, and it worked this time though with the same weird status as my first restarting. So I guess my laptop has not been totally destroyed, but it is only functional randomly.
I plan to go to Apple store next week, but I want some heads up here first. First of all, since it does work sometimes, I am wondering does it mean that the damage is not as much bad as I expected? If it is just something minor, is there any chance that I could fix it by my own? Second of all, if it is hard to fix by my own, how much does it cost in the Apple Store? I am just a poor student, any charge up to 200$ would kill me!!!
    Really appreciate your help!

I should stop using it - you may be making matters worse - and take it to the Apple Store as planned. I'm afraid it may not be good news. Water can do a lot of damage in a very short time because it causes corrosion of the very narrow copper strips on the printed circuit boards.

  • Spilled water on keyboard; fine except space- tips or tricks?

spilled water on my keyboard earlier. it works except space is buggered. I can make one small section on the left work by pressing hard. before I bite the bullet and buy a new one any possible suggestions for a fix? I'm going to leave it unpowered upside down overnight and see if it helps. I know i'm probably FUBAR but hey.

    Hi-
Right side up is probably better to allow evaporation.
I'd even put it near a heat register to help things along.
Give the keyboard a couple days to dry (to be sure).
    It may just surprise you.

  • HELP !!! spilled juice on keyboard and now screen does not illuminate....

I have sorted this problem out the best I can. The computer does boot fine. I can boot to an external monitor successfully.
I can boot in Windows or Mac OS without issue. The screen does not illuminate most of the time. It will go bright for a few moments and then go dark. I can tap the space bar and it will come back on once and a while.
I am prepared to take the computer apart and clean up the logic board but wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience and how you resolved it.
    Thanks,
    Craig

Don't attempt to turn it back on.  Remove the battery if you have a user removable battery.  Take the mac to an Apple Store or AASP and expect a very large repair bill.  More times then not, a liquid spill on a keyboard results in a damaged logic board, which usually costs several hundreds of dollars to replace.  Liquid damage is not covered under warranty if you have AppleCare.  Check with your renters/homeowners insurance to see if it may be covered.

Turn off power, and allow your computer to dry completely.

  • Spilled water over the keyboard of my MacBook Pro.

Spilled water over the keyboard of my MacBook Pro. 13 inches. Used paper and dried it straigt away, it was working fine. Now, a few days later, my left shift-button, the ctrl-button and right-arrow button do not work. What can I do to try to fix this?
My Mac is working completely fine. It was maybe 0,5 dl of water...

Nothing that you can do to fix it. Best to just leave it off and take it to your local Apple Store or AASP. No telling how much it's going to cost you - there are liquid sensors all around your computer so the service centers will be able to tell that it's a case of liquid damage, even if there is no corrosion yet.
You just have to be careful with any kind of liquids around notebooks - liquids and electricity just don't play well together.
    Sorry,

  • What to do when you spill water on your MacBook Air

Thisb morning I spilled 1-2 tablspoons of water on my laptop.  The sceren went black immediately. I dried off as much water as I could and placed it like a tent to try and get some of the water to spill out. It is now sitting in a tupperwear container almost completly submerged in dry rice and has been like that for a few hours. What should I do now? have I done enough?

With the Air splayed open, invert the unit, so that the water exits the same way it came in (keyboard face down).
Immediately take the Air into an Apple Store or Auth Service Center for diagnostic and repair.
It is hoped that any potential damage is limited to the keyboard, and not the Logic Board or any other components. Water contains minerals and minute contaminants which will tend to short any exposed electrical connections. The entire logic board is absolutely full of exposed connections, as is the keyboard.

  • Spilled water on my MacBook Pro. What do I do?

I spilled water on my 2010 MacBook Pro the other night. I immediately turned it off, drained the water out of the keyboard and dried the laptop. I tried turning it back on and got the apple startup white screen, but would freeze and not go anywhere. I turned it off and tried again a couple hours later. This time, the screen will not turn on and doesn't seem like the laptop is powering up. The sleep mode light turns on, but nothing else. I tried again this morning, same thing happens but the laptop gets severely hot within 10 minutes. I figure that I have probably done damage by trying to turn it back on, but I am wondering what I do from here. I am a college student and need my laptop working. Does it seem like the laptop is done for and damage repair costs will probably be too expensive and would be better to replace it? Or will it be better to take it somewhere to fix it?

dont dare turn it on again, water / liquids migrate.
Turning it back on is BAD, damage A can lead to B leads to C etc.
Also water migrating around, especially while on, can wreck havoc worse than initial damage.
Nobody here can speculate on damage on something they cannot see.
Having repaired laptops in the past, even IF you got it completely dry, rresidue from water (iron particles etc), and wet spots under fine contacts is nearly impossible to "dry out", its just doesnt work that way.
Lots of people try to "dry it out", most to learn little was solved in doing same, and sometimes further damage occurred.
Make appt. with Apple store fore repair / diagnostic.
dont turn it on again.  Sorry about the spill

  • I just spilled water on my macbook pro? What should I do?

I just spilled water on my macbook pro? What should I do?

    Hi j,
Shut it down, unplug it, and if it has a removable battery, remove it. After that, it becomes controversial. If possible, I believe in removing bottom cover and keyboard, then dabbing up any water that may have reached the "innards." After that, you can leave it open and point a fan at it for two days or so. Another option is to carefully position it in a bag of uncooked rice (so no rice will get inside it) and seal the bag, so the rice can absorb the water. Some people will tell you not to mess with it at all, just bring it to an Apple Store.

  • Water spilled on the screen - what to do?

I was checking something last night on my macbook when my kid smacked the water in the bathtub and splashed my macbook. I turned it upside down and shook it to get the water out, wiped what was on the keyboard and it seemed ok. There was a little bright line on the bottom of the screen, about the size of a rose thorn. I closed it and let it be till today when I opened it and saw that the spill spread on one side of the screen. It is not solid bright, more like a map with some brighter/normal areas.
I turned the mac off and left it opened.
What else can I do? Did I just destroy my mac that I got a month ago? Should I take the frame off and pop the screen out - would that help drying it out or it does not matter?

    Hi morrisova,
Unfortunately, there's very little you can do if water has gotten trapped in between the glass layer of the screen and the screen itself. The way that the LCD panel sits in the housing with the bezel, I'd strongly encourage you against trying to disassemble anything.
If the water has gotten trapped underneath the protective layer of the LCD, even taking apart the computer won't allow you access to try and dry it out.

  • My keyboard not workin bc I spilled water on it? How can I fix this?

My keyboard not workin bc I spilled water on it? How can I fix this?

    Spill Cleaning
And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons and not a glassful that there is a difference.
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.
