Spinng gear at startup - HELP!!

Hi,
Ok, I only get the spinning gear at startup. Tried starting in safe mode, no go. The ONLY thing I can think of that I did was install the new Safari and Quicktime updates last night. The last time this happened, I installed new software. I had to go to the Apple store and have the OS reinstalled to fix the problem. Problem is, I don't have time to do that, and I need my computer ASAP.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Joel

Joe:
Try this:
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
• Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
• Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
• Log in and empty Trash.
• Restart normally and log in.

    Hi there,
Yes it does. Please read this training manual that is supplied by apple that clearly states that it does.
    http://service.info.apple.com/service_training/en/010/comp-theory/index.php?page =startup
Oh, if you cannot access it please look here.
Please note that the ""Some other issue" means that there could be a possible other issue, but the chance of that
    happening is small.

  • Spinning gear at startup (OS X Panther 10.3.9)

Hi, I have a Powerbook G3 Pismo that runs OS X 10.3.9. I have recently only been seeing only a spinning gear at startup and it will hang there. I tried safe mode, resetting the PRAM, and resetting the NVRAM with open firmware. Upon trying verbose boot, there were problems starting here:
    "Creating RAM Disk for syslogd
    hdik: attach failed: error e00002f0
         syslogd:cannot create /var/run/syslog: Read-only file system
syslogs: child pid 103 exited with return code 1
Creating RAM Disk for crash reporter
    hdik: attach failed: error00002f0
    Launching Crash Reporter
    Jul 4 6:55:32 com.apple.SecurityServer : database /var/db/CodeEquivelanceDatabase opened READONLY (R/W failed errno=30)
    Jul 4 6:55:32 com.apple.SecurityServer : error writing entropy file /var/db/SystemEntropyCache
    Jul 4 6:55:32 com.apple.SecurityServer : Entering Service"
Then it just hangs there with the big white block below that, but I can't type anything. Would trying to fix the disk by making it read and write via Single-User Mode help?

    Hi deuce1981,
Your data will more than likely be "lost forever". Especially if you kept up on your security updates and had at least a 13 bit PW of utter nonsense.
I suggest you report your computer as being stolen to Apple and here's a helpful site link : http://www.freemacblog.com/how-to-prepare-for-a-stolen-mac/
    Hope this helps,

  • Spinning gear on startup after update

After updating my mac mini to OS 10.9 all I get is the spinning gear upon startup. Tried booting in safe mode but got the same result. Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling the OS. Thanks

According to the link below, this is a problem with the display server crashing and that you can boot the Mini if you unplug the display, give it a few minutes, and then plug in the display:

I've got the forever spinning gear on startup.  The apple logo eventually turns into the symbol of the circle with a slash through it. I've run disk utility and repair disk finds no problem. I'm not sure what to do next.

  • After successful restore, spinning gear at startup

I have a MacBook Pro with a new HD (free repair from Apple).  Got it home and restored my last Time Machine back up.  It reported a successful restore.  Upon restart all I get is the grey apple logo and spinning gear.  It never starts up.  What am I doing wrong?

If you found no solutions to your problem(s) listed in the various Knowledge Base Articles see if the following suggestions are of any help:
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices/peripherals from your computer.
Step 1:  Restart into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key during startup.  The comp will run a complete & lengthy file systtem check, then start up w/only the required kerenel extensions & w/o running any Startup items that you installed.
Try starting up normally again.  If you are still stalling, restart in Safe Mode & move on to Step 2........... Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Step 2:  Open Library>Startup items folder-the root level Library, not the one in your user name folder. Look for potentially problematic 3rd party items such as virus scanning software components, etc.  Remove 1 or more items to a location outside the Library folder, such as the Desktop, then restart normally & see if your Mac stalls.  It it does, try removing all the items in the Startup items folder & restart.  If all’s now well, place the items back into the Startup items folder 1 by 1, restarting each time you put one back.  If and/or when the stall resurfaces, you just identified the faulty component. If the above does not work, then it’s time to move on to Step 3.................
Step 3:  WARNING-This step can be tedious-removing .plist files from the /Library/Preferences folder.  Remove the entire Preferences folder from the Library folder on your startup drive then place the files back 1 by 1 until you see the problem return. *The Mac will automatically create a new Preferences folder in the Library folder*Alternatively, you can take half of the items out (all non-Apple .plist file, for example), restart to see if your Mac stalls, then move to a smaller set of  items, repeatingn the process until the culprit is found.  Or you can use Preferential Treatment which is a FREE utility that does all the work for you.

  • IBook G3 Freezing at Spinning Gear on Startup.

I recently bought an iBook G3 700MHz (the silver tone one) online, and the seller had Ubuntu installed on it. He described that he didn't use Mac OS X as the installers froze. I thought I could fix this.
I then swapped the hard disk from my iBook G4 (with faulty logic board, and Leopard installed on the drive), turned it on, and it wouldn't get past the Apple logo and spinning gear (the spinning gear would usually freeze at a point). Sometimes it would only get to the Apple logo on grey screen.
I then tried to install 10.1 (Puma) from CD with an Erase and Install, and it worked and booted fine.
I put my iBook into Firewire Target Disk Mode, and used my iMac G5 to install Tiger on my iBook's drive from the iMac's original DVDs with an Archive and Install without retaining user preferences. (I've done this numerous times with G3 and G4 iBooks with no problems).
The same problem - freezing at spinning gear. Sometimes the gear would keep spinning but the hard drive would stop any activity.
Now I'm stuck, wondering what on Earth is going on! This is definitely not the iBook G3 video card issue, I know the problem intimately and this is nothing to do with it. The only thing I can think of is updating the firmware somehow.
Here's what I've tried on startup:
    - Zapping the PRAM
    - Starting in safe mode (shift key, maybe makes the gear spin for a little longer)
    - Starting in verbose mode (no difference)
    - Starting in single user mode (no difference)
    - Removing Airport card
    - Removing battery
    Other notes:
    - Startup disk chooser (holding option at startup) works.
    - The iBook won't boot the iMac's drive when the iMac's in Target Disk Mode.
    - The iMac Hardware Test boots on the iBook, but gives says it's unsupported.
    - The hard disk is not faulty, the iMac boots the iBook's hard disk without problem.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer, I really appreciate it.
    William

Yes, I have tried resetting the PMU with no effect.
I tried to install Tiger with the retail DVD today (using the iMac's DVD drive with it in Target Disk Mode), with no luck. The iBook wouldn't boot from the DVD; it has the same effect as booting Tiger from the hard disk.
I feel I'm running out of options. I have found more reports of this problem on the web, but none seem to have been resolved. One example being http://www.macfixitforums.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/460697/Ireformatted_iBook_G4_now_Ic
    Thanks for your help,
    William

    Hi,
Restarting the computer should have stopped the appserver.
To kill the appserver manually you can go to the command prompt
    <install-dir>\Sun\Creator2\SunAppServer8\bin\asadmin.bat\stop-appserv
    Thanks,

  • Mac Pro 1,1 hangs indefinately at startup: Help Me Diagnose?

Hello all, trying to determine what could possibly be causing this issue with my Mac Pro Quad 2.66 xeon machine running Snow Leopard.
It will turn on but does not boot up, instead hanging indefinately at the white screen with apple logo, displaying a perpetually rotating load icon.
Perhaps the pros can help me figure this out...
Here are what may be some relevant details:
-Will not boot to system install disk
-Does not take keyboard command for auto disc-boot (c on startup).
-DOES take keyboard command for boot disc switching on startup (option on startup).
Sees install disc via this method, but machine will not boot to it.
-Only very recently, machine turns on automatically when simply plugged in, without the need to press the power button
(this started last night after the machine has been off for days).
-There are no error LED lights anywhere, on the logic board nor on the RAM risers.
Here are some steps I've taken so far:
-Removed hard drives to attempt forceboot to install disc and rule out a system drive issue; no change in symptom.
-Set up various RAM configs to check for RAM problems: no RAM, one pair of each set on Riser A, swapping risers, etc; no change in symptom.
-Failure to boot to Install Disc with any button combo at startup suggested some sort of optical drive problem so
removed optical drive completely; no change in symptom.
I am baffled by this, and while it is an older machine with the 'known issue-laden' Nvdia GeForce 8800GT dual graphics card,
there are no graphic anomolies whatsoever. I have the Arctic Cooler S1 heatsink/fan system in there and so always been nice and cool.
Any ideas folks? This has brought my studio to a complete standstill
Thank you kindly for your input and happy friday to you!

By the way, Ive done the Verbose mode and there are, as you guys stated, mostly lines of information I cannot understand. However, some things that stuck out as possible negatives with words like 'failed' appeared,
perhaps these lines they will look like something to some of you...
Most notable were the final lines at the bottom of the verbose readout page,
(reads as such but on single line):
    launchctl: CFURLCreateDataAndPropertiesFromResource(/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.appl e.auditd.plist) failed: -10
immediately following was another launchctl line, seemingly related to the previous:
launchctl: no plist was returned for: /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.auditd.plist
then yet another launchctl line which read (all on one line):
launchctl: dubious permissions on file (skipping): /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.adobe.Switchboard.plist
    then this one:
launchctl: please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
The very last line on the verbose readout page reads:
Notice: new kext com.paceapp.kext.pacesupport.snowleapord, v5.7 matches prelinked kext but can't determine if executables are the same (no UUIDs)
Another thing that stuck out was a line after the details of launching and bootup sequences (simply details powerup, verbose startup etc.) but then this line appears afterword:
    Bug: Launchctl.c:3557 (23930):17: ioctl(s6, SIOCAIFADDR_IN6, &ifra6) ! = -1
at the very top of the readout, there are seven lines referring to 'processors', looks like this:
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 1 LocalApicId= 1: Enabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 2 LocalApicId= 7: Enabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 3 LocalApicId= 6: Enabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 4 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 5 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 6 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 7 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
There is a line about mid page that reads as such:
    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
anyway, not sure what any of it means but thanks again for reading and for all the advice.
    Best,
    -S

  • Freezing at Startup, Help!

Well it seems my MBPro 17" is completely frozen now at the... startup sreen? This has happened four times already and every time I've had to reinstall OSX. I'm posting now because I swear my lappytop will lose it's screen if I have to reinstall it one more time. It seems this happens when I go to Software Update and install all of the updates. I think it's being caused by the security update, but I can't tell. Whenever I turn on the MBP, all goes well until it gets to the startup screen, where it says, "Starting Mac OS X" -- it usually gets about 30 pixels of progress bar across and never more than that. booted in Sigle User mode and it checks the filesystem, everything is great except when I exit or logout of single user mode. Any ideas? I'm getting rather ****** off at all the problems, making the jump from a 933MHz iBook and 1.6GHz PowerMac G5 to this... hot-tempered, stubborn MacBook Pro. Thanks

    Hi ismith,
If your freeze is not related to the Acrobat or Version Cue thingy, chances are (I speculate), the Intel version of Mac OS X is not as stable as the PPC version. I have experience problems not seen on the PPC version. The Finder on the Intel version is more screwy.
Anyway, I had a startup freeze a few days about. I posted for help and not real help came. The usual safe mode, repair blah, blah, blah did nothing. I knew Archive and Install was my final remedy. But I chose not to do it. Instead, I did Upgrade when I popped in the Mac OS X Restore DVD that came with my week 19 MBP (10.4.6). After upgrading, Sofware Update prompted me to install the Security Update and I chose to ignore. My Mac is running as normal now without any reinstallation of software.
Oh well, do it at your own risk.

  • Powerbook Pismo Hangs on Startup HELP!

I have a G3 pismo that hangs on startup, no matter what I've tried!
I have tried to reset the pmu. zap the pram, change out the hard drive with another one with OS 10.3.9, boot from an external hard drive with OS 10.3.9, and external cd drive with an OSX Panther install disk.
I get the "You need to restart your computer" message in the background, and what looks like a kernal panic message in the front.
    The kernal is version 7.0.0.
At the bottom of the page it says "We are hanging here..."
Has anybody been through this? Am I missing something?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Bates Dynasty,
Ensure your brother in law has the username and password that was supplied by his ISP. Not the email username/password but the internet access ones. If he is unsure then contact the ISP.
Once you have those details do the following:
    1. Connect the router to the phone line via the microfilter.
    2. Connect the iMac to the router using the ethernet cable supplied with the router.
    3. Fire up a web browser (Safari, Firefox etc)
    4. Connect to the router by typing http://192.168.0.1 in the address field
    5. When prompted, enter admin for the user name and password for the password, both in lower case letters.
Once in you'll be presented with a setup wizard which will guide you through the process. There should be an English version electronic manual in the CD that came with the router. Alternatively you can download it by clicking on the link below:
Reference Manual for the 54 Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v6.
