Spinning ball at Pages startup

When starting Pages, spinning ball of death keep turning and no documents show up.
I boot the iMac in Safe boot mode - Same.
Please, anyone has a suggestion?

What have you got in the folder?
It may simply be large and numerous, with possibly graphics that need to be converted like .eps, .ai, .bmp etc and it takes time to open, particularly if you don't have enough memory on a slow machine.

  • Spinning ball loading pages in Safari

Just switched to DSL. I'd say about 80% of the time, I am waiting for the spinning color ball when I try to load a page. It happens a lot when I move the navigation bar on the right to go up or down the page. The ball spins for a good 15-25 seconds. I emptied the cache in Safari already. Any suggestions?

    danigrec,
Try the procedures listed in Speed up Safari, and let us know what happens.
It will also be helpful if you tell us more about the specifics of your your computer and your DSL setup.

  • Why does Pages 09 hang for 1min30sec? The spinning ball, etc...

I am using Pages 09 version 4.3 (not the iWork package, just Pages 09)
Operating system 10.8.3 with 4 Gb memory on an iMac from around 2009 (Intel core 2 duo)
I had been using Quark Xpress for a couple decades and wanted to save a book I did in Pages so I can sell it in the Apple bookstore.
So I saved a Quark document as a pdf.
Then I used an on-line service to convert the pdf to a word document.
Then I opened the word doc in Pages and saved it as a Pages file.
I am in the process of doing a lot of reformatting, but I'm not surprised all the formatting didn't carry over, considering all the flie formats I went through.
The document is about 40 pages and has perhaps 40 pictures, but I do resize them in Photoshop so the Pages document file is only 4.9 Mb.
Pages isn't all that different from Quark, it just seems to hide things in different places.
The problem is that every so often when I click in the document, I get the spinning ball and Pages hangs for 1 minute and 30 seconds (doesn't it seem odd that it is always for the same length of time?). Then it comes out of its coma and I carry on.
Using the Activity Monitor I see Pages using 99.8% or 100% or even 100.5% of CPU. And The Pages line is in red type that reads "Pages (Not Responding).
While I wait for Pages to come to its senses, I can surf the Web, or use other programs, which seems peculiar because if the CPU is 100% occupied, I would think it could.
When I go to the dock and click on the Pages icon, it doesn't come to the front. I have to move any other windows so I can see my Pages document and click on it to bring it to the front.
I went into FontBook and checked all my fonts and deleted a bunch. When I reopened the document, it said it was missing a font, so I selected a substitute, the document opened and I re-saved it with a new name.
Sometimes it hangs when I click in text, but just now it was hanging every time I tried to click on a line behind the main text box.
Just now it hung when I started to go to the Edit menu. I waited and now it's back, as if nothing happened.
    Any ideas?

After a very long night it seems my problems were solved by
    1. making sure all the in-line pictures had the correct wrap around settings and
    2. deleting some lines that had originally been underscores, but wound up being independent lines behind the main text box and
    3. checking my fonts in FontBook and deleting the iffy ones (I dunno if this made any real difference, but I mention it anyway).
Every time I would select a line there would be a long pause. Initially 1 1/2 minutes, but shorter as I deleted the lines one by one.
There were also pauses when trying to select in-line pictures, and sometimes for no good reason that i could discern.
Anyway, now that the pictures' wrap around is re-set, and the lines are delected, there are bo more pauses!
Whew. I spent hours watching that ball spin. Still, it was better than re-creating the whole book.

  • Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally?

I hope I'm submitting this properly, I apologize if this irritates anyone because of improper etiquette. Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally? This is a condition which seemed to start just recently and abruptly. These applications reside on, and are launched from the startup drive, not from a network drive. Also, we have a NAS drive on the LAN that we connect to that also takes a minute or two to mount, when it used to (before this problem) mount on the desktop in a matter of about 5 seconds. We have three identical Mac Pros on the LAN, and they all have this problem when launching and using the above mentioned applications. When I physically unplug the network cable from the Mac, all applications launch instantly and function normally. I know very little about networks, so I can't begin to test or change any setting pertaining to our network - if that is where the problem lies. The only recent change to our network situation is that we lost or our internet and phone service due to massive flooding here in Minot, North Dakota (our ISP tells us the communication lines are under water and shorting out). But shouldn't our LAN still function even though we have lost our connection to the outside world? Thanks so much, in advance, for helping me solve this problem. Sheldon.

    Hi there.
A slow LAN can have many things so its going slow.
    1) is your lan 1gbit speed? (full duplex)
    2) are the macs also 1Gbit speed? (full duplex)
    3) does your nas has a firewall? (so you can see what the mac asking there)
    4) on the macs is the firewall on? (does the programms can pass the fw?)
    5) how big is the nas and how many files/dirctorys are on the nas? (big folders speeds down )
many questions, but sometimes there is a solution.
    regards tim

  • Spinning Beach ball in Pages 5.2

I know there are other posts about the spinning beachball in Pages but the situation here is a little different to what others have experienced. At a small school I work at, since upgrading to Pages 5, there have been huge problems with the spinning beach ball in Pages 5. This did not occur in Pages 4. I use Pages 5 all the time at home with no issues and while at other schools. But as soon as I arrive in the school here and the computer connects to the network, the Beachball starts. This morning, I just wanted to type up some brief notes for a meeting. As soon as I started typing up the notes, the Spinning Beachball showed up and started spinning. You can keep on typing with nothing being added to a line and after 20 secs or so, your typing suddenly catches up and then it starts spinning again. I switched the wireless off and as soon as I did that, I could type normally. When I switched the wireless back on to print the notes, the spinning beach ball started up again. This is the ONLY programme this happens with and it didnʻt happen with Pages 4. It has to be network related and obviously Pages is trying to connect to get something from the Internet but what and where? Teachers are getting really frustrated. Any suggestions to stuff I could try would be much appreciated. It would be really great if Apple could sort out Pages and return it back to the great programme it was!

Thanks Peter but with all the school laptops, desktops and teacher laptops, which have all been upgraded, it would be too big a task. The most distressing thing of all is that I had just got the Principal using Pages a while back, as I showed her how quick Pages 4 was to create school policy and planning documents and when they upgraded all the school documents to Pages 5 (Iʻm not a permanent school staff member, only a once a week classroom IT support person) the documents all went to custard where they had used linked Text boxes. I have written a few publications using Pages 4, and I loved it as a fast, clean, easy to use publisher for simple stuff (Iʻll be using Pages 4 this weekend to do a Centenary booklet - I use Indesign for professional stuff) but the two things that now drive me mad is the lack of linked text boxes and the fact you canʻt slide the page thumbnails on the left hand side to rearrange page order as you could in Pages 4. Iʻve heard that a lot of this was removed so they could do the iOS version and make them the same for synching and that the features will come back, but I wish it was sooner rather than later. It is interesting to read of important institutions like Doctors surgeries who have had all their records mucked up by the changes. After doing PD with the staff on using Pages and encouraging them to use it (with the Principalʻs enthusiasm and endorsement) at this school, they have gone back to using Word and I dare not mention Pages again! I hope Apple reads this!

  • Movie Page spinning ball

I'm trying to add a page for some 1-2 minute videos. Working on the page, I keep getting the spinning ball, even when working with the text. What is the best way to display 4 movies or so on a page and is it better to use the .Mac Web Gallery and a link to it from my site.

Chuck, Thanks for the reply. I'm working on a new page. I'd like to put a minimum of 2 on a page, maybe 4. But maybe that's not good. I'm now saving them 320x240 mp4 using H.264 codec. File size is +/- 5MB each. Here's a link to a published page, to give you an idea what I'd like to do, but I plan on deleted that page & publishing the new one I'm working on.

  • Firefox 18 on Mountain Lion frequently hangs with spinning ball for 1 min while a page is loading, or while opening a new tab. No tabs useable

Firefox 18 on Mountain Lion. Frequently hangs for minutes with spinning ball, usually while a page is loading (status bar says "loading..." "waiting..."), but sometimes just while on the same page. Other tabs and windows are not useable, even though only one tab is waiting. I usually have 2-4 windows open with several tabs each. Behavior is no different in safe mode. This is making the browser unusable.
In the past this happened and I've reinstalled or created a new clean profile, but it always recurs.

  • Spinning Ball on Startup After Running Time Machine

I was running Time Machine for the first time today (backing up to a MyBook 750GB drive). While running it, I plugged my iPod in to sync it and got the spinning ball for an extended period. I quit time machine and restarted. Now, I can't get the system to reboot all the way. I've got it back to the desktop, but none of my folders or my drives are showing. Just the spinning beach ball. I've reset the PRAM about 5 times now and am running our of options.
Thoughts? (Other than wipe my drive)

    Hi,
Install the v10.6.6 combo update available here. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.6. The combo includes fixes that were not included in the original update.

Restart your Mac and try the MAS again.
You can download apps directly from the MAS once you have it running.
Considering the TM backup took so long, make sure there's enough space on your Mac startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*

  • Spinning ball when opening Pages

    Hi,
I'm getting the spinning ball when I launch Pages forcing me to "Force Quit".
I don't know what is the problem.  What can I do?
    Thanks

Maybe, describe precisely what you are working with.
    which operating system
which exact version of the application
    are two basic required infos.
And of course look at the thread which the dumb machine was able to find for you (in the More Like This box) when you failed to do by yourself.

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

    Seems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it.

  • Help --- Finder Spinning Ball of Death Mavericks not starting

get the spinning ball of death when I select finder from the desktop or select anything for that matter.
I have tried reinstalling Mavericks, after the install I get a popup asking me to install java, regardless of the option I select either not now or install the SPOD comes up.
I then go into safe mode and downloaded java and installed it, then rebooted normal mode, same problem SPOD when you select anything.
I have created another account and that works fine, but not my normal account. Initially I thought it might be something to do with chrome, so I uninstalled that.
In addition I have removed any startup items I had against the user ID in system preferences. I have also switched off spotlight trying to build indexes.
I know my system is ok when I get the adobe update icon on my top menu bar. The boot up process simply doesn’t get to that stage.
Below is the boot log. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. I have tried installing from the app store 3 times now.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Everything else is completely irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Media browser should open a folder, but stucks, and giving an endless spinning ball

media browser should open a folder, but stucks, and giving an endless spinning ball. How can I reset at startup Pages?

What have you got in the folder?
It may simply be large and numerous, with possibly graphics that need to be converted like .eps, .ai, .bmp etc and it takes time to open, particularly if you don't have enough memory on a slow machine.

Here's what finally worked for me:
Try shutting down Safari, then delete the following:
    /Users/<user>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    /Users/<user>/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
    /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    /Users/<user>/Library/Safari
Well, I swore I did all those, maybe except the "/Users/<user>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari" one, but all is well now! Browsing great. Thanks!
