Spinning ball delay on playback ?

Anyone ever see the spinning ball when you hit the spacebar or the play button on the recorder or source window ?
Everything was fine a couple days ago, now, whenever i try to playback the source video or the timeline, there is a pause, sometimes with a spinning beach ball before playback starts.
I do use a firewire drive, but it happens on a second internal SATA drive, with the firewire drive disconnected. Also, as I said before, I have used FCP for several years, and never had this issue before. Happens on new project, old projects, whatever.
Any ideas? I have repaired permissions already.

arhtur think its Tiger / FCP 5 / QT playing up...I get spinning ball on most things - timeline if left alone for a minte or so etc. never happened on 4.5 FCP, next dont be surprised if scrubbing starts to give you the ball too, and then juddery playback.
Over the past few weeks the site has been full of folks with these issues, we all hope Apple is reading and they fix FCP 5 real soon as its a lot slower than 4.5, which surely is not why we spent the bucks.

  • Spinning ball, delays

I'm using a 2008 Mac Pro (10.9.5) with multiple internal drives, none of which are anywhere near full. Using FCPX (10.1.3) I frequently get the spinning beach ball after doing seemingly simple operations. I've been trying to figure out why and what I can do about it. I increased my RAM to 16GB, which is more than enough. It seems that the spinning ball is often associated with redrawing the thumbnails in the timeline, and that redrawing process is associated with a peak in disk I/O.
Are thumbnail images for the video clips stored or regenerated each time? If they are regenerated is it done from the original media, proxy media, or optimized media?  If the thumbnail drawing is indeed a key problem, how can I confirm which disk drive is the bottleneck? If I could do that, perhaps I could replace that HDD with an SSD and speed up thumbnail access.
    Thoughts?

Thanks to all of you for the variety of ideas on this topic. I will definitely try relocating my cache files to see how much that might help: first just by moving them off the drive with the media on it to an internal HDD not now used by FCPX. If that produces the anticipated improvement in performance, I'll consider getting an SSD for that purpose.
Karsten, your "stunt" is an inspiration to those of us who are trying to make our hardware last beyond the design lifetimes in this industry of planned obsolescence.
FYI I did some testing of transfer rates between different drives, internal HDD, internal RAID (with only 2 drives), and external USB 3 (using a PCIe card), external FW800. The actual transfer rates between all combinations of the internal drives and the USB 3 were all comparable, +/- 10%. The transfers to and from the FW800 took twice as long as the others, suggesting that it was interface limited, where the others were HDD limited. This also suggests I might even benefit from trying to put my cache on an external USB 3 drive until I get an SDD drive.
One more question: to simplify the process of seeing where the real bottlenecks are while using FCPX, it would be nice to have a tool that shows actual disk I/O quantities BY DRIVE rather than all lumped together as in the Activity Monitor. Does anyone know of such a tool?

  • Iphoto 11 spinning balls when viewing photos

Hi - We're pretty frustrated so seeking help here as iPhoto support via Apple Care has not offered a solution to our issue. We have late 2012 iMac 8mb RAM with 3.2 (or 3.4) processor.
    We have 3 Nikon cameras; D80, D300S, D800.
    The D800 is the newest.
Uploading from cameras into iPhoto works perfectly.
However, when viewing a particular Album that contains photos from all 3 cameras, we get spinning ball and have to wait for up to 30 seconds to go from one photo to another
The spinning ball is random BUT doesn't happen on D80 or D300S photos. Only happens on D800 photos, which makes us wonder if there is a bug in iPhoto. The D800 is supported in iPhoto.
More info: The size of the photo doesn't seem to matter, as this can happen when one is going from a large MB photo to a small one, and visa versa. It doesn't hang on particular photos, but seems to be random.
The D800 is a 35 megapixel camera if that info helps at all. The other cameras are much lower megapixels.
I don't know enough about computers to solve this myself, but iphoto support has not found the problem. I think it's a lot simplier than we think but don't know what to do next.
Apple Care iPhone support had us repair the library and even make a new iPhoto library but we got the same issue.
The album with the issue contains 173 photos, so of which are HDR. It is not getting stuck on HDR photos, but sometimes it can. Like I said, it's random.
When we put that same album into Elements12, there was no issue of spinning balls, so I also wonder if it's the size of the entire library that has something to do with this issue. (the iPhono Library contains 5,000 photos. Support confirmed that there is plenty of free memory so that is not the issue either, but we are going to have the 8mb upgraded to 16MB anyway but we don't believe this will solve anything at this point.
We really wanted to buy Aperture but wonder if we need to resolve this issue in iPhoto first....Thank you  & I hope I provided enough info. I tried...-Lynn

Yes, occurs in both RAW & JPEG
Here's what we learned today: when we call up the Album in question (but does happen in other albums but trying to stick with just one for now) it is now confirmed that it's only happening with D800 photos, but doesn't matter the size of photo or whether Jpeg or Raw. Can be either/or.
BUT, once we go thru the entire album of 174 photos, the time lag is gone the second time we view the photos. (no spinning balls & can scroll rapidly thru entire album) Wouldn't this suggest not a camera issue?
If we close out of iPhoto and go back into iPhoto and to that same album, we get the spinning ball delay between some of the D800 photos as before, but also confirm that it doesn't hang up on same photos each time but hangs only on D800 photos.
One more thing that may mean nothing - The abum has 174 photos. The first 100 or so photos were shot with the D80, the next group are D300s, and the last bunch (from photo #145 to 174) are D800, so the hanging doesn't begin until #145, but might not hang until photo 150. It's random, and different each time the album is opened AFTER iPhoto is closed & re-opened. As long as the album remains opened we can even go to other albums & go back to that album & all is still fine. It's just the intial opening of iPhoto each time.
This particular album IS a "rated" album so it has that cog wheel on the album file. Because it contains all photos that my husband rated as "3-star photos", I thought maybe the "smartness" could be the issue, but he has other albums with D800 photos that aren't rated & those photos can also hang...
Hubby has gone out to shoot post-blizzard photos & we'll do as you suggested upon his return & make new iPhoto library! Thanks! Will report back!

  • Spinning ball with Lion 10.7.1?

Since installing 10.7.1 on a MacBook Pro and a MacBook I continually get spinning ball delays of 1-2 minutes. Any ideas?

Interesting, my spinning balls are also very annoying since Lion upgrade, worse it seems since 10.7.2
I would guess my 12Gb would be sufficient, as would my i7 be (0 bytes Page out, so it is enough).
It happens every few minutes, especially when switching tabs in safari. Internet down 120Mb and up 8Mb should also not be the problem (it is not on the windows 7 machine, it wasn't a problem on Snow leopard). The computer is doing nothing (cpu display of activity monitor), but the balls keep on spinning and the web pages stay white for 40-60 sec.
    Really annoying

  • Iphoto - get spinning ball when importing photos

I just bought a brand new mac book pro.  I had all of my info from my old mac book pro in time machine.  The first time I turned on the new one it asked if I had a time machine backup - short story I restored all of my personal files (no applications).
I was able to import photos once since then.  I have 3 sd cards - not one of them can be imported.  It recognises the card and asks me if I want to import.  I have even tried to only import 1 photo - no matter what I do, I still get the spinning ball and nothing gets imported (I finally have to force quit).
I attempted to repair the library, but it never finishes.  After hours of waiting I end up force quitting it.
One forum mentioned re-installing, but the mac book pro did not come with any disks (yes you read that correctly).

Yes, occurs in both RAW & JPEG

  • Spinning ball spinning and spinning and spinning

Whenever I press reply to an email. And sometimes when I attempt to paste something into a new message, etc, etc, as well as spell check reading "no guesses found" 100% of the time and other erratic spasms all since SL and not rectified via the .1 update and many of the suggestions taken (no smart address book groups, deleted envelope index, got rid of the ever populating RSS feeds). My outgoing Mail server is SMTP verizon and I have Mobile Me as well (which I rarely use as an email, client although it is set up). I have been utilizing every version of OSX since it's advent without this problem. Thanks for any attention. d

How "exactly" do I do that. Copy everything in the accounts section of the Mail preferences- Delete it- then put it back? You know (while I do have a mobileme account with a functional email) I use the OSX Mail application with Verizon. And I'm still getting that spinning ball (at best it spins during a delay- at worst it spins incessantly and I have to force quit an email which then goes automatically into my draft mailbox. Thanks. d

  • Microsoft Office 2008 - spinning balls

Our office has come across an issue in the last few months that has us stymied. I'm hoping someone here may be able to offer assistance or direction. Sorry but the explanation is a bit lengthy...
Last summer, our office updated all of our machines to OS 10.7. We're running on iMacs that are about 4 years old now, and out of AppleCare. When we made the upgrades, there was a decision to not upgrade the version of Microsoft Office we were running (2008) since it would have meant an increase in the cost of the upgrades, and training time to get the staff up & running again. There was nothing we could find at the time that would indicate we'd have any issues sticking with Office 2008 in the new OS.
Shortly after the updates were run, two of our staff of 20+ started noticing problems with delays when opening Word documents from our XServe file server. When they used the Open menu and maneuvered through our file hierarchy, to chose a document, they would notice a spinning ball pop up for upwards of 15-30 seconds (I know it doesn't sound like much, but these are busy assistants, and typically open 50+ documents a day, so it adds up). Sometimes the ball would stick around for a minute or more. If they were trying to jump through multiple folders & sub-folders to locate where the documents were on the server, they'd sometimes encounter this behaviour in each sub-folder they drilled into.
To date we've tried everything we can think of... increased the RAM in those machines; updated the OS; updated Office; updated the RAM in the server hosting the information; uninstalled & reinstalled Office from the original CD; tested using a fresh account, with none of the other preferences; changed their network connection from wired to robust wireless; had them try opening files only directly through the Finder; installed & ran the Trial version of Office 2011...    Nothing has fixed the issue.
We're all at a loss as to what to try next. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this issue, if they've resolved it, or if anyone has any suggestions for what to try next. We have only the two staff members experiencing the problem, but since they're such high producing assistants, we're trying to resolve the issue. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Not the area to ask but...
    A. backup
    B. repair your drive from another hard drive also running latest OS X.
Sounds like your disk file system and directory are problem (the hard drive itself could be failing or have failed blocks too).

  • Spinning ball erratic but persistent

    Hi,
I've read some threads w/ serious client delays and spinning ball activity. We get maybe a 2-5 minute spinning ball on one to two clients out of eight.
I can't find any configuration difference and it seems to go away on its own after a couple of good logins.
Anyone have suggestions on tweaking the client? We've already turned off auto_mount in hostconfig and set them not to sleep.
Modify spotlight behavior? Try static IPs rather than DHCP? Anything else?
    thanks, jhb

If they are using network accounts (Open Directory Master etc) then flushing the mcx_cache might help.
On the clients macs affected launch Net Info Manager, authenticate and select config in the second column, select mcx_cache and click delete. Now remove the property lists from the Managed Preferences folder in /Library, unbind from the OD Master and rebind again, deselect the ‘Add DHCP-supplied LDAP severs’ option and use the IP address or better still the FQDN. When the user logs in again the mcx_cache recreates itself and gets rid of any accumalated logging problems. Its a good thing to do generally anyway, think of it as an LDAP spring clean.

  • Spinning ball in browsers

    Hi,
I am occasionally getting the spinning ball in my browsers which lasts up to 5 minutes then resolves itself. I thought it was a problem with Firefox so I uninstalled it and switched over to Safari. Same problem. I have three tabs open, just opened them. I am only running itunes and Safari and the activity monitor. I emptied the history and cache. This is only happening in my browsers. Does anybody have suggestions on how to resolve this? I haven't tried uninstalling Safari but something tells me that wouldn't fix things anyway since Firefox was behaving the same way.
By the way, it doesn't look like anything unusual is happening in the Activity monitor.
    Thanks for any help.

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML in January 2011:

  • HD spin down delay

Is there a way to control after how long time without activity should the HD spin down in the TC?
I find it too quick. It is around 5 minutes for me (however did not measure exactly).
It just happens too often to me during normal operation and I have to wait 10-15 seconds at virtually each access of the drive.
Virtually each means that I do something on the computer like organizing my stuff, opening a file, study it, save it back after changes, and it is in the frequency longer than the spin down delay which feels the system became unresponsive.
I'd like to have such a control on the power saving interval.
I watched one movie from the TC and at some intervals it started to struggle with the playback which did not happen before when I was playing a movie from the shared drive of an other computer instead of the TC (where the network was a slower one!). I just hope the phenomenon is not because of the too frequent power saving intervals.

Does anyone know any progress for this problem since March?
I'm also checking in on this. Any new developments?
This has bugged me since the day we got ours (on launch day)
So far the T.C. makes for a terrible network drive. And we bought it based on the product description:
    {quote:title=Apple wrote:}"But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."{quote}
    Quickly? No.

  • Why does Pages 09 hang for 1min30sec? The spinning ball, etc...

I am using Pages 09 version 4.3 (not the iWork package, just Pages 09)
Operating system 10.8.3 with 4 Gb memory on an iMac from around 2009 (Intel core 2 duo)
I had been using Quark Xpress for a couple decades and wanted to save a book I did in Pages so I can sell it in the Apple bookstore.
So I saved a Quark document as a pdf.
Then I used an on-line service to convert the pdf to a word document.
Then I opened the word doc in Pages and saved it as a Pages file.
I am in the process of doing a lot of reformatting, but I'm not surprised all the formatting didn't carry over, considering all the flie formats I went through.
The document is about 40 pages and has perhaps 40 pictures, but I do resize them in Photoshop so the Pages document file is only 4.9 Mb.
Pages isn't all that different from Quark, it just seems to hide things in different places.
The problem is that every so often when I click in the document, I get the spinning ball and Pages hangs for 1 minute and 30 seconds (doesn't it seem odd that it is always for the same length of time?). Then it comes out of its coma and I carry on.
Using the Activity Monitor I see Pages using 99.8% or 100% or even 100.5% of CPU. And The Pages line is in red type that reads "Pages (Not Responding).
While I wait for Pages to come to its senses, I can surf the Web, or use other programs, which seems peculiar because if the CPU is 100% occupied, I would think it could.
When I go to the dock and click on the Pages icon, it doesn't come to the front. I have to move any other windows so I can see my Pages document and click on it to bring it to the front.
I went into FontBook and checked all my fonts and deleted a bunch. When I reopened the document, it said it was missing a font, so I selected a substitute, the document opened and I re-saved it with a new name.
Sometimes it hangs when I click in text, but just now it was hanging every time I tried to click on a line behind the main text box.
Just now it hung when I started to go to the Edit menu. I waited and now it's back, as if nothing happened.
    Any ideas?

After a very long night it seems my problems were solved by
    1. making sure all the in-line pictures had the correct wrap around settings and
    2. deleting some lines that had originally been underscores, but wound up being independent lines behind the main text box and
    3. checking my fonts in FontBook and deleting the iffy ones (I dunno if this made any real difference, but I mention it anyway).
Every time I would select a line there would be a long pause. Initially 1 1/2 minutes, but shorter as I deleted the lines one by one.
There were also pauses when trying to select in-line pictures, and sometimes for no good reason that i could discern.
Anyway, now that the pictures' wrap around is re-set, and the lines are delected, there are bo more pauses!
Whew. I spent hours watching that ball spin. Still, it was better than re-creating the whole book.

  • New MBP - endless spinning ball :(

I have had this MBP for about six months. It is a 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo, OS10.4.8. I had the spinning ball problem from the beginning, so I upgraded my memory to 1.5 GB. That has helped only slightly.
Lately I have been using it more professionally, more often - Photoshop CS2, pretty big files back and forth, scanning, managing files, etc. I am encountering the spinning ball constantly: navigating between files, changing file sizes, opening files, and especially working with the Bridge (I think the File Browser was better, at least performance wise).
I am really, really disppointed with this machine. It is not fast, it does not perform well, and most frustratingly, as I've stated, I get the hanging spinning ball all the time. It feels like the six year old PC laptop my wife finally got rid of, not a state-of-the-art Mac laptop.
I called Apple a few months back and they said the warranty was only for hardware, and I had to troubleshoot software issues on the Apple site.
I also bought this machine in the States, and brough it here to the UK. (I don't know if that effects my warranty).
I can't work professionally with this product, I thought Apple was better than this - I also have a G5 desktop machine which works pretty well.
    What should I do??
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Christopher, as others have mentioned, your problems are due to running legacy PPC apps via Rosetta emulation. And these are substantial programs with big RAM and CPU appetites.
Rosetta effectively doubles their RAM demands and cuts their performance by about 50% due to emulating PPC instructions on the fly.
The spinning balls are due to page outs in the Virtual Memory system, which uses the Hard Drive to make up for too little real RAM.
The more legacy apps you are running in Rosetta, the more virtual memory is used -- and this affects the responsiveness of all applications, even Intel native or Universal ones.
The solutions are: 1) run fewer legacy PPC apps; 2) get more RAM; 3) make sure you have adequate free space (at least 10% free) on your hard drive to allow VM to work efficiently.
If you fire up Utilities > Activity Monitor you can see which PPC legacy apps are running. Try to get that down to none. Activity Monitor will also tell you how many page-outs are occuring in Virtual Memory. My guess is: alot!

  • I get a spinning ball every time I search in Itunes 11.0

I just installed Itunes 11.0 and whenever I start typing in the search box (the first letter doesnt even show up) I just get the spinning ball. It never stops and I have to force Itunes to quit.
I'm using a macbook pro operating snow leopard (10.6.8)  2.4 GHz intel core 2 Duo. (I upgraded to Lion when it first came out and itmade everything run really slow so I wiped the computer and reinstalled leopard from a backup!)
I should note that I store my itunes library on an external drive. But that has never been a problem before, and in fact all the songs play fine when I click on them or press play. It seems to only be the search box that is hanging with the spinning ball.

Upon further inspection, it appears the problem is this: when I start typing a word beginning with the letter "a", it doesnt wait for me to finish typing, but rather starts searching for ALL words containing an "a" in them. There are quite a lot. I have about 40,000 songs on my computer. So this simple search is almost crashing my computer.
I have found that results will begin showing ut only after about 5 minutes of spinning rainbow. Which makes the search feature completely impractical..
I consider this a serious bug in itunes 11.0. Or at least a very flawed feature.

  • I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months.  Initially, I did not have any problems.  Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail.  I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops.  Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail.  I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it.  Other times, I run into the same problem.  Any suggestions?

No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do.

  • Lion, Spinning Ball for a few seconds at a time

Macbook Pro, Lion, 8Gig. I have frequent encounters with the spinning ball. Everything stops, the ball comes on, stays for several seconds, then back to life. During the episodes Safari, for example, is completely unresponsive. During the episodes, I can click on another application and switch to it.
This mac has been through several generations of OS X, and several different physical machines, using Migration Assistant at each shift.
    Any help gratefully received!

    Hey Sally,
We have an article that outlines a few troubleshooting steps if your Mac is running a bit slowly.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3915
If you find your Mac is running slowly, check any open applications to make sure they’re compatible with your computer. Or you may need to increase your hard disk space or repair your hard disk.
An application you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
There might not be enough free disk space on your computer’s startup disk. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any applications you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
    Hope this helps,
    David
