Spinning ball driving me crazy!
When I am online, evry couple of minutes the computer freezes and a spinng colored ball comes up. After a few seconds things are back to normal. What's up?
papa56k:
The "beachball" indicates that the computer working to process information and short of RAM power, or something like that. When this happens you might check the activity monitor to see if something else is going on.
Good luck.

Spinning beach ball, driving me crazy
I have been running Safari fine in all my machines until last week. I am trying to remember what I put on the computer before the problem, Dragon diction was just updated and for some odd reason I was asked to update flash and did, but I was running the right version. Since then I dumped flash and reloaded it.
Problem:
No reason but all of a sudden when calling any random page I get a spinning beachball. Sometimes after ten to 20 seconds it recovers but in most case I have to do a force quit and start over. Have no issues with Firefox or Camino. But this problem is driving me crazy. Help
Have a new Power Mac 2.66 with 4GB. Running 10.6.4 and running Safari 5.2
ThanksHI...
If you didn't repair permissions after updating Flash, that may help.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Powerbook with spinning ball is driving me crazy
My powerbook has OS 10.5.8 installed. The spinning ball is driving me crazy. Can I download an earlier operating system to replace 10.5.8. What system do you suggest. I am at my wits end I tried multiple programs to clean up my mac.
Useful article here on the causes of the Spinning Beach Ball and how to troubleshoot it:

The little rainbow wheel on my iMac keeps spining every few secoonds. What can I do about it? It's driving me crazy.
It just means it is busy.
What are you doing that would make it busy?

Rainbow spinning ball comes on all the time
I work in photoshop, on pretty huge files. about 4 GB, the maximum it can take. I have 8 gb of ram (although I know CS2 can only take advantage of 3 something GB). The thing is that my computer is getting slower and slower, and I get that spinning rainbow ball ALL THE TIME. It's driving me crazy. It's come to a point now that when I start up the computer, photoshop won't even open a file. It will just spin that rainbow ball and when I go "force quit" it says "photoshop (not responding)" I restart a couple of times and then finally I get it to work.
What's a good FREE utility to download that can check for file errors? I haven't run any sort of check on my computer ever.
G5 dual 2.5ghz Mac OS X (10.4) dual displayThe only free utility to check for disk problems is Disk Utility which is included with your Mac. There is a good utility called YASU which can be used to rotate log files and clean caches. I have never used it to clear caches as that is a troubleshooting step and not needed for routine maintenance. You might want to read about basic maintenance here:

Here is a link to a FAQ which has very detailed information about the SBBOD and what you can do about it:

Safari launches with spinning ball and full fans and 100% CPU web processes
Exactly the same issue on Macbook Air and new iMac both running Safari 5.1 and Lion 10.7.3
When I open Safari it does not open a page, it just shows a spinning beach ball and shortly after the fans kick in and the activity monitor shows 1 webprocess at 99 - 100% or sometimes 2 web processes at 50/50% all coming from the User. When I inspect the process it says it's "Parent Process (Safari 450)"
When I quit safari the web processes stay at 100% and will only stop when I quit them in activity monitor.
I have reset Safari but no joy.
Firefox etc works fine.
The only update I ran was a 1Password update but they say it's not them.
Any help would be appreciated. It's driving me crazy.Solved..... I used App Zapper to delete Flash and Safari is working fine again!

HT201740 Spinning ball with Preview app
When I use the drop down menu to see the contact sheet I get the spinning ball. Finally it will give me the sheet, but then if I delete a page, I get the spinning ball and it takes forever for it to do it. This has been going on since I updated to 10.10.1. I deleted the preferences file but that didn't help. It is possible that I really didn't delete the correct one because I had a had time finding it. I even tried to download a new copy, but I can't find one anywhere. Please help, I use this feature a lot and it is really making me crazy. Also I have 8gb of memory not 4 that originally came with computer

Network account logins hang and spinning ball in Mavericks
Hello,
All of a sudden on Monday, 11/3/14, I started getting reports from Mac users that they were running into the spinning ball of death (SBOD) during login. The Macs in question are all running OS X 10.9 (between 10.9.3 and 10.9.5), and bound to active directory through directory utility, and the accounts being used to login are active directory/network accounts. The hardware is identical for all users as well (15" Macbook Pro, 16GB RAM, 2.0GHz Core i7 CPU)
I haven't been able to come up with much rhyme or reason to this yet as not all of my Mac users have been affected, and some are having to wait longer than others. I'm suspecting it is something with my Active Directory setup, but have not been able to find much useful information the the Windows Event Log. However, I'm not completely sure that's where the issue lies either because some of the MB Pros will sit at the login screen with the SBOD before the user has even tried typing their username.
What I'm trying to figure out is where should I be looking in Console for any hints at what might be going on or hanging up the boot process? I seem to have a lot of entries being created during the login process, but I'm not as familiar with Console as I should be for troubleshooting this so I'm hoping for some community guidance.
One thing I did find that didn't help was removing one of the search paths. That path does not exist on our machines so that isn't the issue.
Thank you in advance for your assistanceSo I've done some snooping with Wireshark and the Mac is sending IGMP requests like crazy while it appears to be hung up. Almost non-stop outbound to port 11111. This only seems to happen with Macs that are joined to the domain. I'm using a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. It seems to have problems over Wifi though too, but haven't analyzed that traffic yet to verify it's the same IGMP requests. If I disable wifi and remove the Thunderbolt Ethernet from Network in System Preferences, then reboot, then the system seems to boot quickly.
I found another topic about Thunderbolt Ethernet and IGMP kernel panics, but I don't seem to be having any panics. It's just that the system will hang for 10 minutes before going to the desktop, and then possibly longer before it will show any icons.
Anyone have any ideas? -
Why does Pages 09 hang for 1min30sec? The spinning ball, etc...
I am using Pages 09 version 4.3 (not the iWork package, just Pages 09)
Operating system 10.8.3 with 4 Gb memory on an iMac from around 2009 (Intel core 2 duo)
I had been using Quark Xpress for a couple decades and wanted to save a book I did in Pages so I can sell it in the Apple bookstore.
So I saved a Quark document as a pdf.
Then I used an on-line service to convert the pdf to a word document.
Then I opened the word doc in Pages and saved it as a Pages file.
I am in the process of doing a lot of reformatting, but I'm not surprised all the formatting didn't carry over, considering all the flie formats I went through.
The document is about 40 pages and has perhaps 40 pictures, but I do resize them in Photoshop so the Pages document file is only 4.9 Mb.
Pages isn't all that different from Quark, it just seems to hide things in different places.
The problem is that every so often when I click in the document, I get the spinning ball and Pages hangs for 1 minute and 30 seconds (doesn't it seem odd that it is always for the same length of time?). Then it comes out of its coma and I carry on.
Using the Activity Monitor I see Pages using 99.8% or 100% or even 100.5% of CPU. And The Pages line is in red type that reads "Pages (Not Responding).
While I wait for Pages to come to its senses, I can surf the Web, or use other programs, which seems peculiar because if the CPU is 100% occupied, I would think it could.
When I go to the dock and click on the Pages icon, it doesn't come to the front. I have to move any other windows so I can see my Pages document and click on it to bring it to the front.
I went into FontBook and checked all my fonts and deleted a bunch. When I reopened the document, it said it was missing a font, so I selected a substitute, the document opened and I re-saved it with a new name.
Sometimes it hangs when I click in text, but just now it was hanging every time I tried to click on a line behind the main text box.
Just now it hung when I started to go to the Edit menu. I waited and now it's back, as if nothing happened.
Any ideas? After a very long night it seems my problems were solved by
1. making sure all the in-line pictures had the correct wrap around settings and
2. deleting some lines that had originally been underscores, but wound up being independent lines behind the main text box and
3. checking my fonts in FontBook and deleting the iffy ones (I dunno if this made any real difference, but I mention it anyway).
Every time I would select a line there would be a long pause. Initially 1 1/2 minutes, but shorter as I deleted the lines one by one.
There were also pauses when trying to select in-line pictures, and sometimes for no good reason that i could discern.
Anyway, now that the pictures' wrap around is re-set, and the lines are delected, there are bo more pauses!
Whew. I spent hours watching that ball spin. Still, it was better than re-creating the whole book. -
New MBP - endless spinning ball :(
I have had this MBP for about six months. It is a 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo, OS10.4.8. I had the spinning ball problem from the beginning, so I upgraded my memory to 1.5 GB. That has helped only slightly.
Lately I have been using it more professionally, more often - Photoshop CS2, pretty big files back and forth, scanning, managing files, etc. I am encountering the spinning ball constantly: navigating between files, changing file sizes, opening files, and especially working with the Bridge (I think the File Browser was better, at least performance wise).
I am really, really disppointed with this machine. It is not fast, it does not perform well, and most frustratingly, as I've stated, I get the hanging spinning ball all the time. It feels like the six year old PC laptop my wife finally got rid of, not a state-of-the-art Mac laptop.
I called Apple a few months back and they said the warranty was only for hardware, and I had to troubleshoot software issues on the Apple site.
I also bought this machine in the States, and brough it here to the UK. (I don't know if that effects my warranty).
I can't work professionally with this product, I thought Apple was better than this - I also have a G5 desktop machine which works pretty well.
What should I do??
G5, dual 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)

G5, dual 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)Christopher, as others have mentioned, your problems are due to running legacy PPC apps via Rosetta emulation. And these are substantial programs with big RAM and CPU appetites.
Rosetta effectively doubles their RAM demands and cuts their performance by about 50% due to emulating PPC instructions on the fly.
The spinning balls are due to page outs in the Virtual Memory system, which uses the Hard Drive to make up for too little real RAM.
The more legacy apps you are running in Rosetta, the more virtual memory is used -- and this affects the responsiveness of all applications, even Intel native or Universal ones.
The solutions are: 1) run fewer legacy PPC apps; 2) get more RAM; 3) make sure you have adequate free space (at least 10% free) on your hard drive to allow VM to work efficiently.
If you fire up Utilities > Activity Monitor you can see which PPC legacy apps are running. Try to get that down to none. Activity Monitor will also tell you how many page-outs are occuring in Virtual Memory. My guess is: alot! -
I get a spinning ball every time I search in Itunes 11.0
I just installed Itunes 11.0 and whenever I start typing in the search box (the first letter doesnt even show up) I just get the spinning ball. It never stops and I have to force Itunes to quit.
I'm using a macbook pro operating snow leopard (10.6.8) 2.4 GHz intel core 2 Duo. (I upgraded to Lion when it first came out and itmade everything run really slow so I wiped the computer and reinstalled leopard from a backup!)
I should note that I store my itunes library on an external drive. But that has never been a problem before, and in fact all the songs play fine when I click on them or press play. It seems to only be the search box that is hanging with the spinning ball.Upon further inspection, it appears the problem is this: when I start typing a word beginning with the letter "a", it doesnt wait for me to finish typing, but rather starts searching for ALL words containing an "a" in them. There are quite a lot. I have about 40,000 songs on my computer. So this simple search is almost crashing my computer.
I have found that results will begin showing ut only after about 5 minutes of spinning rainbow. Which makes the search feature completely impractical..
I consider this a serious bug in itunes 11.0. Or at least a very flawed feature. -
I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail. I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it. Other times, I run into the same problem. Any suggestions?
Killerfinch wrote:
My new yahoo account nestles comfortably in iCloud on the mine iPad.
No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do. -
help. my iTunes wont open. I keep getting the message error7 (windows error 193). contacted Microsoft they said contact iTunes support. I have uninstalled all iTunes componets and then reinstalled everything but message still comes up... its driving me crazy.
If it's a Windows error, it's typically going to be a Microsoft problem. Uninstall any security software you have and if you have a restore point for your PC, you may want to restore your PC back to when iTunes was working normally. If none of those work you would need to contact Microsoft and demand help.
