Spinning ball everything is suddenly moving alot slower

I can not figure out what has happened to my Imac G5. Every time I try to print now I have to remove the printer and reinstall the software. It will print once and then I have to do it again. I tried downloading the newest drivers from hp that didn't work so I went with the drivers that came with my mac that didn't work. Also some of my programs are taking a long time to open and I get the spinning wheel. Mac's don't have viruses do they? I have used up all the ideas I can think of can someone tell me whats going on?
Thanks

I just started having the exact same problem. I have been using my computer the same way for about 2 years and all of a sudden, things started taking longer to do. The "spinning beach ball" has made more appearances than usual. Also, I am getting messages that Firefox had to quit, etc. I really only use Firefox, iTunes, Entorage and sometimes Safari. I rarely have more than 2 apps open at the same time. I booted my mac a few days ago and right after I booted, I got a message telling me that I needed to shut it down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
The other thing I have noticed is that the fans are a little louder than normal. This leads me to think that there is something putting a load on the processor. But when I check the Activity Monitor, nothing is showing that is using a high percentage of CPU time.
The only thing that has changed recently is that I have removed a lot of large files from my hard drive and went from having 30 GB free space to 120 GB of free hard drive space.
Here are the troubleshooting steps that I have done already:
-Zapped PRAM
-Reset SMU
-booted from system disc and repaired disc permissions AND ran disc repair (nothing wrong was found)
-Ran all the utilities in ONYX
One other thing, I did have to have my power supply replaced a month ago since my mac would not boot. But after the new power supply was put in everything was fine until now.
Any suggestions that anyone has would be much appreciated! I really do not like to call AppleCare (last time I called the person could barley understand the problem with my computer!)

  • TC back ups suddenly moving VERY slow!  KB per minute!

Received my 1TB base station today and set it up to replace my Airport Extreme base station without any problem. Started my back up of my Black MacBook. The transfer was going smoothly in MB per second. I went to bed and woke up to find that the initial back up had failed half way through the task. I had to unplug the TC to get it to be recognized by my laptop and then found that my back ups were now moving in EXTREMELY slow KB per second! actually it's more like KB per minute. Absolutely ridiculous! My MacBook is running 802.11n, so this is so frustrating. Any suggestions?!
    Thanks. Mark

I am running in to extremely slow transfers (as of right now, my wife's macbook has been "preparing" for about 20 minutes with no noticeable movement). I have made the initial backup via ethernet on two computers. Everything seemed fine (other than the fact that 220 gigs of info on G5 tower took about 13 hours).
I have even had both computers back up wirelessly without a problem.
However, this morning, both just hang on "preparing" and don't seem to want to backup. I tried restarting both computers. That didn't seem to help. Any suggestions?

  • Hangs, slow shutdowns and restart, spinning ball opening and closing apps

I am experiencing random hang ups and slow wake up and shutdowns.
I will be typing something and nothing appears then all of a sudden the text will appear. The cursor will periodically hang up, applications take along time to open and close and I seem to get the spinning ball frequently. System preferences is slow to open. The problems seems to correct itself if I restart.
In addition, it takes forever for the DVD to recogized a CD or DVD disk and show the icon on the desk top.
I have been monitoring various posts related to this problem and there does not seem to be an answer?? Is Apple aware of these issues. I have done everything from resetting the PRAM to running disk utilities, unpluging the machine, re-installing software, etc... Nothing seems to work...I called tech support and been the Genius Bar....It seems to get worse the longer the computer is on....HELP...

That seems to be a common theme -- and sounds suspiciously
like an over-temperature problem. Try smcFanControl.

  • MacbookPro Retina 2013 spinning ball halfway thru boot after 10.10.1 update

Macbook Pro Retina 2013 with FileVault2 encryption for the SSD. Was running 10.10 OK, and applied the 10.10.1 update yesterday. The update hung without completing, so I powered off the machine and tried to reboot.
Booting starts normally -- I enter a username and password to unlock the disk, and then the kernel starts booting. When the boot indicator is about 1/2 across the screen, the cursor is a spinning ball and can be moved via the trackpad. I've let it set at the beach ball for 10+ minutes without progress.
I have tried each of these steps without any improvement:
    Cleared the NVRAM
    Reset the SMC
Booted into Recovery and used Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the disk
Booted into safe mode -- long time required to boot, and then can't enter anything at the login screen
Booted verbose mode -- Window Server has the screen so the system messages are not visible when the hang occurs
Reinstalled Yosemite from the Recovery boot
Booted in single-user mode, manually done "fsck -fy" and "mount" to verify the system can use the SSD volume
I have a TimeMachine backup from a few days ago, so I could try wiping the disk and reinstalling but would like to av

I had the time to re-enable FileVault2 on the boot volume today after the previous complete wipe and reinstall, and upon reboot, the system again hung at the same point. I've since manually booted from a USB volume where I also had Yosemite installed, and after waiting for the volume to complete encryption, turned off encryption and successfully booted the now-unencrypted volume.
This seems to be a common issue with Yosemite -- now that I know what to look for, the problem is documented at http://www.macissues.com/2014/10/27/filevault-bug-makes-yosemite-pause-or-hang-a t-login/, among other places.

    Seems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it.

  • Hello - I am new here.  My 2011 imac is really slow and keeps showing the spinning ball in all applications.  Is there a way to diagnose what is wrong?  I have lots of space left.  Thank you

Hello.  I am new here and have suddenly developed problems with my 2011 imac.  Mac osx 10.7.5
The spinning ball keeps coming up with everything I do and eveverything is slow.  Even my keyboard and mouse are acting up.      I have 12gb memory and lots of storage space left.

If you try to access Spotlight in the morning and it is still indexing, reindex it by following these steps.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
Sometimes the index is corrupted, or something it is trying to index is, and it hangs up like that.
Re-indexing may free that up and let it work correctly.

  • Running the latest OS Mavericks.  8 gigs of RAM.  150 gigs free space on computer.  Problem: since upgrading to Maverick almost all applications are slow to open, and frequently many 'spinning ball' interruptions.  Repaired disk permissions - no help.

I'm running the latest OS 10.9.1 Mavericks (late 2009 iMac).  8 gigs of RAM.  150 gigs free space on computer.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, apps are slow to open, with frequent "spinning ball" interruptions.  Repaired Disk Permissions - no help.  Repaired disk - no problems indicated.  Did notice in going to Utilities/Console that there are 4000 messages over a 3 day period.  Any suggesstions how to correct this sudden slow down, other than psychiatric help?

Yes.  Many messages show up when I try to use Office for Mac 08.  Here's a sample (and one that repeats over and over again):
2/11/14 1:01:16.577 PM Microsoft Word[1912]: OTAtomicAdd32 is deprecated and will be removed soon.  Please stop using it.
Also getting many msgs when I use Chrome.

  • Mac Pro 8-Core - Slow, spinning ball, more...

I have a new Mac Pro 8-Core. Equipped with 2x500GB drives, 4GB RAM, X1990 Video Card, Airport/Bluetooth, etc...
I use many apps, CS3, mail, safari, FTP, Coda, and more, all day, everyday. The problem I am having is about performance. I replaced a dual core G5 with 8GB RAM with this one, and my G5 hardly ever gave me the spinning 'wait-for-it' ball, yet this one seems plaqued with it. Simply put, this machine is wicked slow, clumsy, and not at all what I expected. I have done the usual fix-its, including reinstalling the OS and even wiping the drive completely and installing the OS. Is it me, or is it this 8-Core?
I'd like to know if any other owners of the 8-Core have similar issues, or issues at all.
Thank you in advance for any responses to this post. Before taking this up with AppleCare I'd like to have some others experiences so I don't look like a fool when I do call.
    Mac Pro 8-Core - MBP 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thank you, some very helpful hints as to what might be causing this. Here are some responses you might be interested in. Letters respond to each of your suggestions.
    A. - Probably. I'm watching RAM prices every day. I just don't have $400 to spend on RAM with the iPhone coming next month.
    B. - I never use this, so that can't be the problem.
    C. - Will look into this some more....Thanks, never heard this before now.
    D. - Agreed. I wish there were an easy way to list everything running in Rosetta.
    E. - The issues do remain when NOT running any CS3 apps, as for dedicated scratch drive, I've been thinking about this. But even more, I've been hearing a LOT about those fast 75GB 10k SATA drives (forget the name though)... seems a lot of people are using these as their boot drive. Any thoughts?
    F. - See above
    G. - Will do, thanks!
    H. - Done that... no issues found, so far.
    I. - Not sure how to access this... however, here are some numbers from Activity Monitor. Do these make sense to you?
VM SIZE: 13.47GB (this seems to grow as more apps are opened)
    Page In/Outs: 54378/0
Of course, right this second I'm only typing in Safari, everything else is idle.
What concerns me, and I don't know if it should, is the size of the VM. Thinking years back I thought that if you had enough RAM you wouldn't use any Virtual Memory. Is this still the case? Would more RAM decrease the VM size in a new Mac?
Also, I have 2 1TB OWC FW800 hard drives hooked up to my Mac. These are 2 disks each, 500GB each drive, set up in RAID 1. Each drive (WD) has 16MB of cache, so accessing these drives "should" be fast. However, any time, and I mean any time, I try to access one of these drives my computer takes at least 10 full seconds to display the contents of the drives, I get the spinning ball and I cannot do anything else while the computer tries to list the contents and open the drive. Is this to be expected?
Thanks for the help, I truly appreciate it.

  • Mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.

mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.
It is taking an hour to power up and mac apple logo appear onscreen. No finder controls or "clicks" are being recognized. Spinning beachball all the time.
Using hard power off and holding the mouse down, I was able to open the optical drive and then restart with "c" and ask the dvd to reinstall the system, but it has stalled before finishing the installation.
This happened about 4 days ago, first it started responding slowly, and then it just keeps spinning the beachball. I can't find hardware test. I did run etrecheck, it did not have any error messages, but I can't copy or move the data anywhere.... I am not able to access the mac pro with another machine, and now I am stuck in install freeze, so I can't copy etrecheck by hand onto a piece of paper.
Without being able to finish a reinstall, what can I try?
After it got bad, and before it got REALLY bad, I managed to repair permissions, but it took a long time. Most of a day. When I restarted from that, things were only worse.
Mac Pro 1,1 , 11 GB ram, 7300, 5TB hard drives, OS 10.6.8,  the drive containing the system folder is/was 700 used, 290 free. While I could get commands to respond, I put Activity monitor on the desktop and watched it.  System memory was 3.31 GB used, about 7 free, and some wired. No app was using a huge amount.
what should I try next? I put a bid on a new/old machine so that I could move the 4 hard drives over.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Please correct me as I articulate this.
I have three versions( 5, 6, CC) of the Adobe Master Collection which I keep active for different clients. I have final cut and motion. I have Office 365. I have a collection of graphic apps that are individually not too big but in all, my app folder is 65GB and my bootcamp partition is 61GB. I can't fit all this on 120 ssd and a 256 will be full once I install, correct? drives should be half open?
Somehow I did not make it clear enough that I was trying to copy onto a 2TB drive I had just initiallized in order to try and save files from my startup drive. I don't use time machine. I take a day or a few days worth of documents and physically move them to another drive at night.  If a series is finished I make two dvd's as well. The second black drive that was failing was the drive I moved my backup documents onto. At no point was I trying to backup onto the failing drives. I was trying to copy off both of them onto the other two drives, a third aux backup that has been there for a while, and a newish 2 TB which I designated as the startup drive when all this trouble started.
I wondered if there were any good techniques for trying to get the data off the failing drive. Thanks for the suggestion of Data Rescue 3. I don't have it yet, but I will try it as soon as I get it. I was never trying to repair in place.
I am very interested in getting a pci bracket and an ssd, but I may wait until I can afford the larger one. If I get an older bracket that is compatible with my old mac pro 1,1  ,  I'd like to be able to move it to a mac pro 3,1 if I get one. Will the larger ssd drives be compatible with the sata in a pci bracket that can work in my mac pro 1,1 ? sata 2 versus something else? If 240 or 256 is my size limit, how much more than my 65 and 61 GB partitions can I put on there? How much of a scratch disc can I make if I leave another 39 GB of headroom on my bootcamp partition? I'm filling 165 GB without making any allowance for temp files.
You have said that 120 is enough for any system. I think I must be misunderstanding something. Are you saying that assuming that most people run office and photoshop and maybe lightroom?
I have and use 4 HDD in this machine, mostly for document storage in two places.
I took out all but the group of 2GB ram chips I bought a year and a half ago. The old ram had passed the hardware test the last time I had access to the hardware test. Two black drives failed, one was a year old and one was a year and a half old, and that it may have been exacerbated by the heat wave. I don't know why the video and the monitor were affected save that the startup drive was failing. I am trying to replace the card.
With all this said, I am also looking at a used mac pro 3,1 with a better video card since a newer machine will likley be compatible through another OS upgrade. If a machine costs only a little more than a new card, it might be a better way to go.
I don't have any sources that offer an ssd for 100. ( of a size that is useful)
How large is your application folder?

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Macbook Pro Running Slow: Spinning Ball of Death

    Hello, all
I decided to go ahead and make an account here because I have looked in various different threads for a solution to my problem, tried various different things, and nothing works so far.
Basically, my MBP is running super slow as of the past few days. Every few seconds, the spinning ball of death appears, all typing stops, reappears again a few seconds later, and my browser feels like I'm running on a dial-up connection. Any application feels like that, really, on- or offline.
I've done a reset of my SMC. I've run Disk Utility and repaired the disk. I've run OnyX. I've tried looking for abnormal tasks taking up a lot of computer usage in the Task Manager.
Is there anything else I should be trying to do? I'm really running out of options and am quite frustrated with this whole situation, about to throw my laptop out the window.
I updated recently to OS X Mavericks, but that was after the problem had started. The problem persists in 10.8 and 10.9.

Is this a Standard MBP, one with the built in Optical (DVD) drive, or a Retina model?
You could try reinstalling a fresh (NEW) copy of OS X on an external drive and run the system from that external to test. If the system runs smooth, although slower than from the internal drive, with no beachballs then you have some type of problem with the internal drive. What that problem is could be the drive is failing or it is to filled up with files or the cable going from the drive to the logic board is failing.

  • Several macbook issues:  date and time, constant spinning ball, super slow

I have a macbook w/ several problems. these problems started about 3 months after i got it and have continued to escalate, now becoming REAL problems.
    1. The date and time always "stalls". In order to display the correct date and time i have to click on it (top right), the date and time menu appears, and it naturally resets itself to the correct time. It is not a time zone issue. I think this might happen when it falls asleep, which brings me to problem 2.
    2. A lot of times when my computer falls asleep, it doesn't wake up when i open it or when i click the keypad to open. For a while this was such a normal thing that i had to take the battery out for a couple of seconds and then replace it in order for the computer to turn back on. Now, i can push the on/off key to sometimes "wake" it back up. This problem is consistent, yet it doesn't happen every time it goes to sleep. this problem happens maybe 5 times a day.
    3. my computer is SUPER SLOW. Not necessarily the internet, just overall performance. Typing emails (entourage) and regular mail. Using excel and word, iphoto, etc. Switching from one program to another causes the spinning ball to appear for longer than normal.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And, i admit in advance, i am not very good at finding my way around the mac, so detailed instructions would be post appreciated! Thanks.

since you said that you are using excel and word then i'm going to guess that you also have windows on your system... your computer will not function to its full potential running another OS with only 512 of RAM.... you really need up upgrade to at least 1GB for a requirement or 2GB for a much better performance.

  • Spinning ball / slow

I have been having the problem with the spinning ball for some time, but it has worsened after installing Yosemite. Now it is extra slow and this ball comes on constantly. I mostly use my Mac for email and to surf the web (even if I don't have many tabs or programs open), and it comes up a lot. It also comes up frequently when opening files, etc. I also notice startup of my machine is super slow lately.. so I hate to shut this machine down now because it takes so long to reboot!
I did an Etrecheck analysis of my machine just now:
    Problem description:
    spinning ball often, sluggish computer
