Spinning ball in mail/ with i photo

Was in Apple Mail and went to attach a photo from i photo. When I went to attach> at the application drop down > i photo> the spinning ball just kept spinning and I could not open it. Have the 20 inch 2.0 GHZ imac aluminum. Also just installed the imac update. What is causing it and the cure if there is one.

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • Spinning Ball using Mail in Lion -  Can I strip all?

    [Reposted from iMac Community]
I've read dozens of threads on the Spinning Ball Syndrome with Lion and Mail. I've tried all of the suggestions and still no luck.
My case is unique, and should be simple to solve - because I never set up any mail accounts and am willing to delete ALL mail files.
Sometimes I get the spinning ball and have to force quit.
When I start the Mail app, sometimes it doesn't even appear as an app starting up, but I can use command-tab to switch apps and find it.
    I would appreciate anyone's help:
Can I REMOVE ALL mail data files and start "clean"?
    Background:
Used a Mac Mini for 3+4 years as a music media station. NEVER set up any mail accounts on the machine.
Upgraded through a few OS generations up to Lion.
Bought a new Mac Mini about a week ago.
Before migrating data to the new machine, I updated all software, verified and repaired disk permissions, and ran fsck -yf in single user mode on the source.
Then I migrated the data to the new machine using migration assistant, including user settings.
    Updated all software.
I've verified permissions, repaired them. Verified the hard disk. No errors. And I've removed files that were mentioned in related threads.

  • Spinning ball in Mail

Since updating to 10.8, on waking, Mail shows a spinning ball until all the accounts are synched and all mail has come in. I'm not the only one seeing the new "feature", but no one knows how to avoid it. This never happened in 10.6 or 10.7. Is there a known fix? I've seen a suggestion to trash some plist file, but it was not one that was on my machine.

Well, WD Memo Agent would not be the problem, whatever that is. I suspect it's something for Microsoft Word. The only update from Apple for 10.4.11 was a Security Update, and it had nothing to do with Mail. But try this:
If you're using a POP mail account, go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
Restart Mail and wait for it to rebuild the index, and see if it will launch correctly. If not:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.mail.plist file.
Restart Mail and setup your account(s) again. Mail will find your existing mailboxes automatically and you can then see if it works properly.
If Mail crashes, copy and paste the crash report into your reply.

Please repost on the correct forum, this is an iMac forum. There are forums specifically for Mac Mini users, however the answers will probably still be the same.

  • Very slow iWeb, spinning ball of death with every click.

This is a problem I'm having JUST with iweb.
After any click I make, or try to do anything in iweb, I get that spinning color ball for about 10 to 20 sec. It makes iweb unusable.
I have all the latest updates, have repaired the permissions, ran disc repair, booted on external drive and ran tech tool pro, re-repaired permissions and disc from disc utility.
I then proceeded to reinstall iweb, downloaded the updates and I still have the same problem.
What ever I do in iweb I still get the same spinning ball. When I change to another program, there is absolutely no problems. This is only iweb related.
I have a very simple web site. A few blog entries with some photo's. No video.
Can anyone please help me ? Please.
    Thanks

I've read that iWeb is memory intensive. How much RAM is
installed? Not knowing your knowledge of the mac, I've included the following, so please do not be insulted if you already know this info
Learn how check the amount of installed RAM (physical memory) and the amount of memory being used.
To see how much RAM is installed, choose About This Mac from the Apple Menu. The Memory field specifies the amount of RAM installed in the computer.
Mac OS X does not display the memory allocation and usage levels of individual applications in the About This Mac Window. Mac OS X automatically manages memory allocation and usage. This is different from earlier versions of Mac OS.
    Viewing memory usage:
For Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 or later, open Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/). For Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier, open ProcessViewer (/Applications/Utilities/).
Mac OS X processes and applications are listed in main window. In Mac OS X 10.3.9 and earlier, the "% Memory" column indicates the percentage of RAM in use by an application or process at the time of sampling.
In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you can see the overall percentages of memory in use or idle at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window.

  • Continuous Spinning Ball in mail.app 4.3

My MobileMe account in mail.app shows a spinning ball continuously but sends and receives email ok. The spinning ball is there for as long as mail is open.

  • Spinning ball while mail loads?

Is it normal in Mail for the beach ball to spin simply while it is loading new messages? If so, I have a new app to dump. I hope it is just a setting I need to adjust. Thanks

Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail. It can't hurt.

  • Is it possible to type an e-mail(with some photos) at around 6pm and set the e-mail to send at 12:01 pm the next morning automatically?

I am running Mavericks on my i-Mac and would like to know if there is a way to set up an e-mail in the early evening and then have the e-mail sent automatically at 12:01am the following morning?

You can also do this with Automator and Calendar.
You would create an Automator application that creates a new mail message (with the text and attachments you specify) and then sends it.
Then you create the event in Calendar (at the time when you want the e-mail sent). For the alert for the event, you specify “open file (at time of event)” and choose the application as the file.

  • FCPX and spinning ball of death

Ever since I "up"  graded to Mavericks, FCPX has struggled, my whole computer slowed down drastically so much that I had to take it
to the genius bar.   Five "geniuses"  tried to figure out what was wrong for SIX HOURS!
Continually assuring me this was not usual.   Yeah, right.  Across the internet the spinning ball of death with FCPX and Mavericks is pretty well known.
The only solution they offered was to wipe my drive.  After six hours and NO other solutions, I conceded to the murder of my computer, backing it up, of course.
FCPX seemed to work temporarily after that, but as soon I got into serious editing it went right back to taunting me with endless rainbow balls spiraling whenever I needed to simply look at a clip! Or event!
    It worked FINE before Mavericks!!!!!!!
    I regret the upgrade...
I hope you fix this because jobs are on the line here....  And sleep is necessary for an editor to do her job.

Could not agree more. Trying to prepare DVDs of dance student evidence for assessment of final grades. Needing to select material from various clips all in same event to illustrate key points for each student (a perfectly reasonable editing task). ALL clips have been optimised and all copied into the library. Almost every time I need to preview a new clip (i.e. skim from one clip into another) I get the beach ball and have to wait minutes.
I tried raising this as a bug (I am a developer) and got brushed off with the "not enough information" reply, because I cannot find any of these problems reported in the system logs.
Everything was working really, really well before Mavericks and 10.1 - I think someone re-wrote things for the new MacPro but broke it for iMac users. Not a good way of persuading me to buy a Mac Pro, by the way.

  • I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months.  Initially, I did not have any problems.  Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail.  I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops.  Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail.  I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it.  Other times, I run into the same problem.  Any suggestions?

    Killerfinch wrote:
My new yahoo account nestles comfortably in iCloud on the mine iPad.
No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do.

  • I have an iMac with Mavericks that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls" from particularly Mail, Google Chrome, and Word. I took it to the Apple store and it was fast there, at home slow. I have been having internet speed issues, could it be that?

I have a pretty new iMac with LOTS of storage (about 4TB with externals) that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls of death" from time to time in almost any program that I might have open, but particularly MacMail, Google Chrome browsers, and Word. I took it to the Apple store to be checked out and it was really fast with no issues there. I brought it home and it was better at first but then it started happening again.
I have been having a lot of issues with Time Warner where my download speeds will dip really low, and all I can think of is that MacMail goes and tries to check for email and can't get out to the internet and it locks all the other resources up while it is doing it. It will also take a REALLY long time to even let you look at mail. The folder size is over 13GB (down from 22GB that I just cleared out from - I have a lot of MP3s etc in there) and I will try to get this down to under 10GB which might help, and the mail is on an external drive. I have been told that Verizon is not a shared network but a direct connection to their server, and if I can't fix this then I will try switching to them. If anyone has any direct knowledge on this stuff, I am all ears.

We need to know more about your system, please download EtreCheck and run the report and please post it on your next reply. Then we can see how your system is configured, what apps are on it and look for anything obvious. We will look forward to seeing your report.

  • Having trouble importing photos from Panasonic Lumix cameras. No error message 1 just has spinning ball, other can import using menu but ends with spinning ball. using 9.1.5 Mac OSX10.6.8. Have to restart to access iphoto

Hi I am trying to import photos into iPhoto using two Panasonic cameras both Lumix (DMC TZ3 and DMC FZ30). Worked in the past no problem, I upgrade system when prompted and am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.1.5.  When I attach cable from camera to Mac with the DMC TZ3 I get the spinning ball and nothing else and have to force quite and restart to access iphoto again without the spinning ball, with the DMC FZ30, when I plus in the cable I get an icon on the desktop and can go into iphoto and import the photos that way.  When the photos have been imported I get the spinning ball again and have to restart the Mac to access iphoto without the spinning ball.  Photos do import though.
Can anyone help, a really stupid, non-techie person who has no idea what she is doing, please?
    Thank you

    Try use a different cable.

  • I´m editing a video with photos, suddenly FCP X displays the spinning ball a few seconds every time I play the Timeline

I´m in a project that is primarily composed of photos, lots of them. When I reached 10 minutes of work the spinning ball started to appear after an edit and when I try to play the timeline to see the results or preview my edit. I checked the source material and I realized that I made a begginner mistake: I had a lot of photos with too high resolution (4000x3000 for example), so I resized all photos to a more manageable size for FCP, 1024x768, and then I saw the light! FCP began to work normally again. Later I added more photos to the events folders, and when I finished the import, FCP returned to the same thing I described before. Someone has a Tip? I am working with too many photos? the video is planned to last 20 minutes, maybe I will assemble it with 400 photos, but in the events I have lots of photos, 2600 aprox, some of it referenced and others copied in the events folders. Maybe I have a lot of photos in the events folders?

I´ve have done that but does not work. I have 12 GB of RAM in a Core i3 3.2 Ghz iMac, thanks
