Spinning Ball, iTunes Frozen

All of my music is on my external hard drive. I created a new iTunes library, placing it on my laptop hard drive. In the iTunes preferences, I indicated the laptop hard drive as the location of my library, and then imported my music into the iTunes library. However, all I get is the spinning ball in iTunes when I try to play music.

Maybe you should update your 10.6.3 to 10.6.8

  • I get a spinning ball every time I search in Itunes 11.0

I just installed Itunes 11.0 and whenever I start typing in the search box (the first letter doesnt even show up) I just get the spinning ball. It never stops and I have to force Itunes to quit.
I'm using a macbook pro operating snow leopard (10.6.8)  2.4 GHz intel core 2 Duo. (I upgraded to Lion when it first came out and itmade everything run really slow so I wiped the computer and reinstalled leopard from a backup!)
I should note that I store my itunes library on an external drive. But that has never been a problem before, and in fact all the songs play fine when I click on them or press play. It seems to only be the search box that is hanging with the spinning ball.

Upon further inspection, it appears the problem is this: when I start typing a word beginning with the letter "a", it doesnt wait for me to finish typing, but rather starts searching for ALL words containing an "a" in them. There are quite a lot. I have about 40,000 songs on my computer. So this simple search is almost crashing my computer.
I have found that results will begin showing ut only after about 5 minutes of spinning rainbow. Which makes the search feature completely impractical..
I consider this a serious bug in itunes 11.0. Or at least a very flawed feature.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • ITunes Freeze and Spinning Ball

I installed Snow Leopard and it loaded up fine. However, iTunes starts up and then I see the spinning ball. I restarted and tried again, but got the same issue.
I restarted again and opened iTunes, then left it running overnight to see if it would resolve itself. It was still there.
How can I solve this issue?
    Thanks.

    hello again...
    still having the same problem...
tried creating a new user, but i confess, haven't spent as much time trying things out in that account...
i did however, reinstall os 10.5, and imported everything from a time machine backup (just so i knew i was running with a fresh OS)...
and also, ran REMBER which said the RAM was good...
even monitored the computer in CONSOLE to see if anything looked odd when an application crashed. nothing memorable yielded.
one curiosity, is that when i repair permissions, it finds hundreds to correct....
    says "repair permissions complete"...
but then, i can run the process again right away, and it still finds 100's to correct.
this seems odd to me, and i wonder if a permissions problem is to blame.
but short of repairing them (or trying to) i don't know what to do...

  • Itunes unresponsive (spinning ball)

I have a Top-Of-Range 15" MacBook Pro (2011) running itunes 10.6.1 (7). The Library is 12000 tunes (on the Hard Drive) and, 1200 TV Programmes, 348 Feature Films on a remote Hard Drive by USB. Software is totally up-to-date.
I hard wire sync my ipad 2, my iPhone 4.
The iPod is virtually permanently attached by USB, because I use Air Display the iPhone 4 only once daily.
Yet, I lose my computer for 10-20 minutes during every sync. iTunes becomes totally unresponsive for that time, while other applications slow down (Mail Word, Excel) or also become unsresponsive (Handbrake, iPhoto) for the same period.
It s getting annoying- even to the point that I regularly force quit iTunes to regain control. I forced quit last night and "locked" iTunes until I rebooted the Mac.
Is there something I can do to improve this productivity?
    Thanks
    Phil

I have the same problem. I also get a spinning ball when ejecting a CD from within iTunes. But when I eject the CD from Finder, it's quick.

I don't have an answer, but in the same boat. Beach Balls and Beach Balls and more Beach Balls.
iTunes 11 seems to be bigger, fatter and communicating more with the big Apple in the Cloud.
    A god awful mess.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Spinning beach ball and frozen spotlight on iMac

I cannot use spotlight. The window opens and I cannot type in it because I get a spinning beach ball when the cursor is moved to that area. No matter what I do, it won't go away. I have run disk utilities, zapped the pram, run tech tool pro. Searching on this subject did bring up discussions of cache cleaner, but it appears it is no longer available for Snow Leopard (even though it appears you can download it from several places, it is really Lion Cache Cleaner). Relaunching the finder does not help. Restarting the machine doesn't help either, as soon as I try and use spotlight, the same thing happens. In fact, the whole right side of the menu bar causes the cursor to turn into the spinning ball. Any ideas?
    thanks,
    Joe

I think it is definitely related to indexing. I am attaching a screen shot. I think that the application I have open in the menu, which I cannot remember what it is called, nor can I turn it off because my cursor is a beachball, may be part of the problem. While I was trouble shooting, a menu dropped down show that my computer was being indexed. At the same time spotlight opened by itself and it said  "Indexing". I tried relaunching the finder, which would not happen. I had to hit the power switch to shut down. Do you recognize what that program in my menu bar is?

  • Spinning Ball- Firewire Drive question?

Question about my external drive before I go and purchase a new one...
I have one hard drive that gives me the spinning ball quite regularly now. I have booted up Disc Utility and repaired the disc. I have also used Disk Warrior (a great 3rd party app) to scan the disk, repair it's data structure and even rebuild it. I have also scanned the hard drive with ClamX AV to try and rule out some sort of virus. Why is this drive locking up my computer, freezing applications, preventing reboots, etc.? It only happens to this one external drive, so my thoughts are it's either a data structure issue, or its hardware. Am I right in that line of thinking?
Is there a core system process that handles the mounting and dismounting of external drives that could be corrupt? Can I monitor and log what is causing my drive to hang? I'm not that familiar with terminal so I have been watching 'Activity Monitor' to see what processes are in use when I

Okay, I did everything you suggested, and I believe that as soon as I had Zapped the PRAM things with the drive became remarkably better...I could eject the drive successfully, and then remount it. Thank you!
But after two days of tests I have still had some irregular issues: it has frozen iTunes once or twice, locking up multiple programs and preventing a restart until the drive is turned off.
I'll definitely try Zapping it again and see what happens, but does this ring as the beginnings of a failing drive? Should I still look to replace it? It does not have the S.M.A.R.T. function...

  • Sometimes Spinning ball since RAM upgrade

i ordered 1GB RAM and replaced it with the 512MB.
since then i get a spinning ball sometimes, but only if i do several tasks at once.
like using Photoshop, Indesign, Mail, Safari, Itunes and dashboard and finder same time intensively. the ball doesnt stop. it lasts for hours.
and everything is terrible slow or more frozen. i have to reset the pb then with applectrlturnonbutton as the "turn-off" task in the finder isnt working anymore.
before (with 1.5GB RAM) i did all these intense actions too, and nothing special happened, only the fan raised and everything seemed to be a bit slower. but never mind. i never ever saw the spinning ball in the finder happen so long, only for 1 or 2 seconds, yes, but never for minutes or hours...
now with 2GB, i get a spinning ball sometimes when using it heavily.
the funny thing is, i ordered it at the company i use to order RAM for Apple since 5 years. http://www.dsp-memory.de/v1/catalog/ and everybody in germany is ordering there, as it is good quality with fine prices and dedicated for Apple only (no PC-RAM for sure)
i didnt add anyting else in the last 2 weeks, than the 1GB RAM and a PCMCIA card from formac "watchandgo" dbv-t for TV, but its not in the powerboook, only at night for watching TV and it works fine. before the 2 weeks i never had any problem or reset happen here...
how can i test the RAM and rule it out or define the problem?
"about my mac" says proper infos:
    1. SODIMM0/J20STANDARD:
    Größe: 1 GB
    Typ: DDR2 SDRAM
    Geschwindigkeit: PC2-4200S-444
    Status: OK
    2. SODIMM1/J23REVERSED:
    Größe: 1 GB
    Typ: DDR2 SDRAM
    Geschwindigkeit: PC2-4200S-444
    Status: OK
is there any application out there wich can test the RAM and then says "works 100% fin"e or simple "not fine" ?
    thanks!"

One application to test memory is memtest, which can be found at http://www.memtestosx.org/ If you want a GUI front end to memtest, you can use rember, which can be found at http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember/ Unless running it once turns up a problem, I'd probably let the test run multiple times overnight.
Have you looked at your memory usage under the activity monitor? The Apple note describing how the memory is used is at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918 This may give you some insights. Also of interest would be page in/page outs with the increased memory (if all is working as expected, you'd expect page outs to be low, preferably non-existant!)

  • Help --- Finder Spinning Ball of Death Mavericks not starting

get the spinning ball of death when I select finder from the desktop or select anything for that matter.
I have tried reinstalling Mavericks, after the install I get a popup asking me to install java, regardless of the option I select either not now or install the SPOD comes up.
I then go into safe mode and downloaded java and installed it, then rebooted normal mode, same problem SPOD when you select anything.
I have created another account and that works fine, but not my normal account. Initially I thought it might be something to do with chrome, so I uninstalled that.
In addition I have removed any startup items I had against the user ID in system preferences. I have also switched off spotlight trying to build indexes.
I know my system is ok when I get the adobe update icon on my top menu bar. The boot up process simply doesn’t get to that stage.
Below is the boot log. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. I have tried installing from the app store 3 times now.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Everything else is completely irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • New macbook pro has a lot of spinning ball

    Hello everyone.
I am completely new in the Mac world and I dreamed for my Macbook pro for years so I hope you will understan my frustration.
    At the end of July I purchased a mid 2012 15 inch non-retina mbp - 2,6gb, 4mb ram, 500 gb hd.
Ever since I got it I experienced the spinning ball quite often. But because of my wish for perfection tried not to pay any attention to that.
Then 2 months later suddenly the SD card reader stopped working. So I brought it back to the shop and also complained about the spinning ball. They changed the logical board and told me everything will be fine now. Should not see any spinnig ball anymore.
I gave it a try for the weekend to do some projects where I had to use programs such as Adobe Ilustrator and Photoshop as well as Word, however the spinning ball was still there. Quite often it actually appears just by opening Safari or  Itunes, so not only heavier programs. sometimes just when waning to paste something or opening the Finder.
Brought it back to the shop again saying that it seems slower than my old ASUS that had no more than 4gb of RAM. Besides, this one is a new computer and it is empty, so how can it be so slow already now?
A week later I got it back saying it was a defective Hard drive cable that might have caused it. Changed, spinning wheel should be no longer there.
Gave it another try - spinnig wheel still there!
So now I am wondering - is that normal?
boyfriend says - is it normal, friends say - no, I never see it (still working on Adobe programs as well as having 4gb of ram and 2,4mhz)
My guess is that it might be the RAM? but then again - common, it is a new compter and I have only 50gb of information inside. how can it suffer already? Besidesthat, often the spinning ball appears on random situations in random programs. when I spend my day with the computer I see it like 5-10 times a day.
sometimes when I check the Memory activity the Wired memory goes up to 1,70gb out of my 4gb of RAM. Is that the issue? Once I restart the computer, it goes down again. But this is annyoing, right?
Please share your exprience and opinions,
    Best regards,
    Sarmite

    Thank you for your help

I finally got it to work.
    My problem was Spotlight !!!!!!!!
I disabled a while ago Spotlight upon an advice that when you use Logic Pro on a professional basis like I do, it was better to turn off Spotlight. To do so I used Spotless.
I turn it back on and gone was my problem not being able to download anything from Mac App Store.
    Hope this work for others.

  • Imac spinning ball after update

Since last OS X update EVERYTHING I do causes the spinning ball. Cant listen to iTunes, it quits, typing this message I will get the spinning ball. Go on web, spinning ball, processes stop for up to a minute.
Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix ?
    <Edited By Host>

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.
