Spinning Ball on Startup After Running Time Machine

I was running Time Machine for the first time today (backing up to a MyBook 750GB drive). While running it, I plugged my iPod in to sync it and got the spinning ball for an extended period. I quit time machine and restarted. Now, I can't get the system to reboot all the way. I've got it back to the desktop, but none of my folders or my drives are showing. Just the spinning beach ball. I've reset the PRAM about 5 times now and am running our of options.
Thoughts? (Other than wipe my drive)

Hi,
Install the v10.6.6 combo update available here. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.6. The combo includes fixes that were not included in the original update.

Restart your Mac and try the MAS again.
You can download apps directly from the MAS once you have it running.
Considering the TM backup took so long, make sure there's enough space on your Mac startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*

  • HT201250 Recover previous data on HHD after run Time machine

Hello, how can I recover the data which were on the external HHD and that have been canceled after having run the time machine for the first backup? I had all my pictures on it .... :-( Thanks for your help !!!

If you continue to use your machine it will be impossible to recover anything. You might look into data recovery software or take it to data recovery service. Could prove to be very expensive.

  • App store won't open after running time machine reinstall

my HD crashed last week, got it replaced and just got my iMac back (20" intel). I ran a restore from my Time Machine backup from before the crash (took forever, but finished).
All looked fine but I found two problems...
    1) Safari would crash without opening. I fixed that by just downloading and reinstalling Safari.
    2) the App store does the same thing. the icon jumps a few times and then just stops and won't open. Unfortunately, it's part of the OS and it doesn't seem Apple allows direct downloads of the App Store app. I'm current on my OS so I'm not sure how to fix this problem.
Again, summary, restore from Time Machine, App Store won't open, OS is up-to-date. Any suggestions?

  • Running Time Machine after 'Archive and Install'

I had a strange problem with my iMac with finder and dock crashing on booting and not being able to open any files. It's been off to an Apple centre for repair, they've done an archive and install to replace the OS, and I apparently now need to run Time Machine to restore my system (don't have the computer back yet).
Am I right in thinking I'll just plug in Time Machine hard drive, insert my Leopard CD and then use Utilities > Restore System?
What's worrying me is I'm going to reintroduce the problem that was fixed by the Archive and Install in the first place! Any help or thoughts very much appreciated,
    Andrew

as mentioned you don't have to do that after an archive and install.

that's very likely to happen if the problem was not hardware. did they do anything with the computer besides doing an archive and install? if not, you most definitely should NOT do a full system restore from TM as this would bring your problems back.

  • When i run Time Machine to back up my computer onto an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed. I don't know when it is safe to disconnect the external hard drive - which is store in a separate location.

When i run Time Machine to back up my computer on to an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed.  This is necessary to know because i don't leave my external hard drive connected to the computer.  I routinely disconnect it after backing up the hard drive, and then i store the external hard drive in a different location from the computer.  So, knowing when the back up process has been completed would be a very helpful thing to have the computer specify.

Just enable Time Machine's menu extra (System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Show Time Machine in menu bar.
This will add a little Time Machine icon to your menubar. When Time Machine is actively backing up your data, the icon will spin as a visual indicator. You can also click the menu icon to see the backup status, including how much data is left to back up.

  • IMac won't boot if external hard drive running Time Machine powered on

Upon rebooting, my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, running OS X 10.5.4, locked up in a gray screen, the "gray screen of death."
At the recommendation of the Apple Tech Support rep, I turned off the iMac using the power button, and rebooted with my USB and Firewire devices removed.
The iMac boots fine with everything except my G-tech drive 1GB external hard drive running Time Machine with no partitions, attached using a Firewire 800 cable.
If the external hard drive is on, I get the interminable gray screen.
If I boot with the external hard drive powered off and then power it on after I'm at the Mac desktop, the disc image mounts normally on the desktop.
I've already repaired all disc permissions and it doesn't help.
My external hard drive has used 907 of the 931 GB true capacity. Supposedly, Time Machine removes the old files to make room for the new files.
Time Machine itself is running properly once I get my iMac booted in this peculiar way.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Error 18 after moving Time Machine to a bigger disk.

Good evening, I have been running Time Machine since August and everything was fine. Now my internal drive is getting full and I wanted to move it to a bigger drive and since I was doing that I figure why not time machine.
    Here are the original stats.....
    PowerMac G4 DP 1Ghz Quicksilver
    1.25GB of RAM
Two internal Disks 74.5 (Formated) each with the secondary being my primary disk.
189.9 (Formated) GB Maxtor with 125GB at the end of the disk being devoted to Time Machine.
    10.5.7
Following instructions and other users experiences from here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2028949&tstart=0
I copied my time machine disk using Disk Utility Restore to a Seagate FreeAgent 934GB (formated) disk, that work successfully and that was July 11th. A few days of mandatory backups and scheduled backups and everything worked well.
So today I decided to test the integrity of the backups made recently before I erased the 200GB Maxtor and move my HD to there. Since there were no other options available I partitioned the FreeAgent 1TB drive with Time Machine on there to a 74.5GB Partition at the bottom of the disk with a 5GB of blank free space in between TM and the test partition. That took about an hour to partition. Before I left for work I loaded off of my Retail Install DVD and ran a repair on the FreeAgent Drive since TM hasn't done a deep transversal and I wanted to force it.
According to my brother the repair went without a hitch, okay and he shut down the computer. When I came home started off of internal started a mandatory backup looked at the log message using the Time Machine Buddy Widget saw it was doing a deep transversal and I stepped out. When I came back I noticed Time Machine Menu had an "!" on it/in it saying there was an error, I loaded TM Buddy and it said there as an error 18 on the scheduled backup AFTER the mandatory backup.
    Sarting standard backup
Volume at path /Volumes/ALN Perm Backup Disk does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
    Backup failed with error: 18
Now the mandatory backup that I did when I came back went smoothly and so did the next scheduled backup apparently, however I am not sure if this is just a one time error or something else until the next schedule backup sometime tomorrow (right now the drive has been ejected and TM turned off.)
So does anybody have any insight into the cause behind this.
My theory is it could be since I partitioned the new Time Machine Backup to a smaller size but then again I have in past extended the old Time Machine backup by utilizing some free space I left at the end of the drive which is ummm 15.4GB.
To clarify on the old Time Machine backup which is still holding original data...
42.00GB of an Old 10.4 Installation
    125GB of Time Machine
    15.4 of unformatted free space.
Hope all this information helps any questions please ask.
    Have a good night

That particular error happens on occasion after switching a TM drive from one Mac to another, erasing your TM disk/partition, or attaching a new TM drive with the same name as an old one.
You can usually fix this by simply re-selecting your TM drive in TM Preferences > Change Disk.
Since your backups are now working, it's likely ok.

  • IMac crashes when trying to run Time Machine to 500 gig Time Capsule

After working fine for several months, every time my iMac tries to run Time Machine to my 500 gig Time Capsule the mac crashes. The grey veil cascades down the screen and I have to hold the power button down for a while to restart. Any suggestions.

same here. time capsule has worked for six months and overnight, in the middle of the night it shows the grey veil and prompts a restart.
this happens whenever i connect to time capsule.
at the moment i'm back to my trusty plug-it-in iomega which is blazingly fast.
any ideas on how to remedy this, i know ita kernel panic, but i dont know what the fix is?????

  • I am changing to a larger hard drive on my Mac. Can I copy the Aperture library from my backup disk running Time Machine without loosing anything?

I am installing a larger harddrive on my Mac. Can I copy the Aperture library from my backup disk running Time Machine without loosing anything? I am getting help migrating everything else on to the new harddrive, but since copying the 350Gb Aperture library takes a lot of time, I am planning to do that part myself.

I found the following information on Time Machine help about restoring Aperture library from TM
    Restoring Your Aperture System
If you buy a new computer or use another system at a different location and want access to the Aperture library, you can install Aperture and then transfer the library from your vault (on your backup disk) to the other computer. If you experience equipment failure or other unexpected events, such as fire or weather-related damage to your equipment, you can easily restore the entire library to your new computer from a backup disk.

  • Western Digital External Hard drive keeps undocking when running time machine.

I have been using a 2TB Western Digital My Book external hard drive for about a year now to run time machine and backup my files. The past month I have noticed that my backups have been failing. I try and for a backup and about halfway through it gets "delayed" because of an error. Then I have a alert pop up on my desktop with the following message:
The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.
The disk was not unplugged from the power supply or the usb port. I am stumped. Anyone know what is going on and how to fix it??

I would avoid WD, Seagate, LaCie, and Iomega external drives, and any drive with special features such as networking or built-in backup software.

  • I just moved iPhoto (9.6) library to EHD from my MBP. I had been running time machine backups. With the library now on an EHD, will time machine run a seamless backup next time i connect  (if i allow TM to see other drives)?

I have MBP 2012 running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6. I run Time machine backups daily.
I just moved iPhoto library to EHD and removed the iPhoto library on MBP. I have enabled external drives to be accessed on TM. The next time i run a TM backup with the EHD  connected, will TM run a seamless backup or will it not like the fact that a backup is now spread across two devices where it used to be on only one?

By default EHDs are excluded for TM backups - you have to go to the TM preferences ==> options and remove them from the excluded list
And you need two disks connected -one for your iPhoto library and one for the TM backup - TM will backup all hard drives that ar not excluded - you do not need  multiple TM backup disks

Some, possibly, but shouldn't be a problem.

Much of it is OSX and other things needed to run your Mac.
See The Storage Display for an explanation, and don't miss the link to Where did my Disk Space go?

  • FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
    On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
    Thanks for any thoughts... Barry

  • After using time machine my users folder cannot be seen, but all information is still intact. Where did it go?

After using time machine my users folder cannot be seen, but all information is still intact. Where did it go?

This is a new feature or bug if you want to call it that in OS X 10.9.3
Until Apple fixes this, here is a temporary work around.
Copy and paste the following command in the Terminal and then hit Enter, followed by your password.
    sudo ln -s /Users /Users\ Folder; ln -s /Users/Shared /Users/Shared\ Folder
This will put a link to the Users folder called "Users Folder" on your Hard Drive and a link to the Shared folder called "Shared Folder" inside of the Users folder.
