Spinning ball when browsing Xvid videos..

Hey guys, I'm afraid I have abit of a difficult one with not much to go on.
I have my Mac Mini G4 hooked up to my standard def tv via the Composite/S-Video adapter and running iTheater on it to play back Xvid movies, the problem is whenever I'm browsing to find a video inside of iTheater, my Mac will freeze up, with a spinning ball going continuously. The cpu fan will go into turbo mode, but I think it eventually gets over it after a few minutes and unfreezes (thaws? :p).
Ok, so, here are the details
- 10.4.11
- iTheater 0.2.0
- DivX 6.7
Now, I've been watching movies fine in DivX Player, and Quicktime appears to play them as well, I haven't played for too long since QuickTime won't do full screen.(I think iTheater uses it as a backend)
It will freeze whenever I highlight a Xvid video (but not always, sometimes I can highlight a few no worries), which should be when it gets a thumbnail of the video, if I'm correct, but never does. It seems to affect videos in the Movies folder and via my Samba share on a windows box, both wirelessly and wired.
The problem doesn't appear to happen when connected to my 17" computer LCD.
The problem used to happen with MediaCentral many months ago, but I eventually rage quit and dumped my Mac in a cupboard. MediaCentral if I remember correctly would freeze when browsing videos even though the software doesn't generate thumbnails.
I've tested the RAM using the Apple Hardware test and Rember, and it passed both.
So, that leaves me with the following theories (I think),
- Codec issue
- Something to do with my settings for displaying it on the tv which are causing it to hang (they're default, and its a PAL tv)
- Hardware issue.
Anyone able to help?

I have to think you are just dealing with a bug in the 0.2 code of iTheatre.
Have you tried your question on the iTheatre support forums?
It is particularly odd that you don't have the problem with your monitor, but do with the TV.
If diagnosing this, I would experiment with having/not having a network share alias. And also trying different xvid files, in case there is some odd about one of them.

  • Spinning ball when printing to video!

    Hello
    I have one big problem!
I have my project ready and when I try to print it on video, the spinning ball stays there all the time. Then The application is not responding?
    What is wrong???
    Thanks

You MUST give more information about your computer setup, version of FCE, size and complexity of project and exactly what you are doing.
This article will give you an idea of some of the things you need to mention:-
ASKING FOR HELP WITH FINAL CUT EXPRESS
When you write in with a problem, remember to give all possible APPROPRIATE details.
On occasions, people have omitted to mention vital details about what they were doing. eg. trying to capture video clips from a still camera!
    Things to mention:-
THIS IS A GENERAL LIST - SOME ITEMS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
Computer model and external Hard Drive.
    Operating System.
    FCE version.
    Camera type.
Did the problem suddenly occur or has it NEVER worked?
Have you recently loaded new Software or Upgraded ANY programs, Operating Systems etc.
Have you moved or altered your source files?
Have you captured the clips from a DV camera or an A/D Converter etc.?
Is it Standard or High Definition Video?
What type of files are you using?
Also include details of exactly what you were doing before the problem occurred.
Is your video extremely long (over an hour) and filled with numerous transitions and effects?
Is your Hard Drive more than 75% full or badly fragmented?
Is your external HD FireWire or USB2? (USB2 is NOT suitable).
What other equipment have you got plugged into your computer - it may be causing conflicts?
Is your camera plugged directly into your computer’s FW socket? Daisy chaining it can prevent it working properly.
Video from DVD and Hard Disk Camcorders or Still Cameras can not be used in Final Cut Express.

  • Why do I get the spinning ball when I try to delete some photos?

Why do I get the spinning ball when I try to delete some photos?
I then have to Force quit everytime.
    What should I do?

Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

Maybe, describe precisely what you are working with.
    which operating system
which exact version of the application
    are two basic required infos.
And of course look at the thread which the dumb machine was able to find for you (in the More Like This box) when you failed to do by yourself.

  • Solution! Spinning ball when clicking in timeline

    Hello,
some users reported the spinning ball when simply clicking on the timeline. I had the same problem. With just one color bar test picture sequence, the spinning ball was there.
First I realised that I can move the timeline as long as I want by pressing left or right arrow AS LONG as I do not touch any other key. If I do so, I would get a five seconds ball penalty.
Next I tried it using standard keyboard and mouse instead of BT and - voilà! No more spinnng ball.
    Sorted.
    Regards,
    Armin

I have checked the FAQ at this location:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42978
but do not see how to trash my preferences. Is there another place where I can find this info?
Any thoughts on why this happens? I opened a new project in FCE 1.0 and was able to import the same clips and play them from the timeline with no problems. Sounds like a FCE HD problem to me.

  • Iphoto 11 spinning balls when viewing photos

Hi - We're pretty frustrated so seeking help here as iPhoto support via Apple Care has not offered a solution to our issue. We have late 2012 iMac 8mb RAM with 3.2 (or 3.4) processor.
    We have 3 Nikon cameras; D80, D300S, D800.
    The D800 is the newest.
Uploading from cameras into iPhoto works perfectly.
However, when viewing a particular Album that contains photos from all 3 cameras, we get spinning ball and have to wait for up to 30 seconds to go from one photo to another
The spinning ball is random BUT doesn't happen on D80 or D300S photos. Only happens on D800 photos, which makes us wonder if there is a bug in iPhoto. The D800 is supported in iPhoto.
More info: The size of the photo doesn't seem to matter, as this can happen when one is going from a large MB photo to a small one, and visa versa. It doesn't hang on particular photos, but seems to be random.
The D800 is a 35 megapixel camera if that info helps at all. The other cameras are much lower megapixels.
I don't know enough about computers to solve this myself, but iphoto support has not found the problem. I think it's a lot simplier than we think but don't know what to do next.
Apple Care iPhone support had us repair the library and even make a new iPhoto library but we got the same issue.
The album with the issue contains 173 photos, so of which are HDR. It is not getting stuck on HDR photos, but sometimes it can. Like I said, it's random.
When we put that same album into Elements12, there was no issue of spinning balls, so I also wonder if it's the size of the entire library that has something to do with this issue. (the iPhono Library contains 5,000 photos. Support confirmed that there is plenty of free memory so that is not the issue either, but we are going to have the 8mb upgraded to 16MB anyway but we don't believe this will solve anything at this point.
We really wanted to buy Aperture but wonder if we need to resolve this issue in iPhoto first....Thank you  & I hope I provided enough info. I tried...-Lynn

Yes, occurs in both RAW & JPEG
Here's what we learned today: when we call up the Album in question (but does happen in other albums but trying to stick with just one for now) it is now confirmed that it's only happening with D800 photos, but doesn't matter the size of photo or whether Jpeg or Raw. Can be either/or.
BUT, once we go thru the entire album of 174 photos, the time lag is gone the second time we view the photos. (no spinning balls & can scroll rapidly thru entire album) Wouldn't this suggest not a camera issue?
If we close out of iPhoto and go back into iPhoto and to that same album, we get the spinning ball delay between some of the D800 photos as before, but also confirm that it doesn't hang up on same photos each time but hangs only on D800 photos.
One more thing that may mean nothing - The abum has 174 photos. The first 100 or so photos were shot with the D80, the next group are D300s, and the last bunch (from photo #145 to 174) are D800, so the hanging doesn't begin until #145, but might not hang until photo 150. It's random, and different each time the album is opened AFTER iPhoto is closed & re-opened. As long as the album remains opened we can even go to other albums & go back to that album & all is still fine. It's just the intial opening of iPhoto each time.
This particular album IS a "rated" album so it has that cog wheel on the album file. Because it contains all photos that my husband rated as "3-star photos", I thought maybe the "smartness" could be the issue, but he has other albums with D800 photos that aren't rated & those photos can also hang...
Hubby has gone out to shoot post-blizzard photos & we'll do as you suggested upon his return & make new iPhoto library! Thanks! Will report back!

  • HT1444 should i be getting a spinning ball when I am upgrading to Mountain Lion?

I downloaded Mountain Lion from the app store, to upgrade from Lion. When it completed downloading I clicked the install button. The screen went to gray and I have a spinning ball. It has been like this for about 15 minutes. Is this the normal screen during an update to Mountain Lion? I do not want to restart the computer and have it crash my system.

Quit the installer, Put a copy of that Install OS X Mountain Lion.app somewhere safe; otherwise, the ill-designed installer will delete itself during the installation and you'll waste bandwidth, time, and electricity DLing it again.. Do a hard shutdown, restart, and try running the installer. The first thing the installer does is check the MAS for additional components, which takes about three to four minutes, then restarts. It appears you have a hung installation.

  • IPhoto 08 Spinning Ball When Photo Sharing

Since updating to iPhoto 08 every time I attempt to share my picture library iPhoto freezes and I get a spinning ball. After a number of minutes the ball stops to spin and iPhoto returns to its normal functionality. But, after initializing photo sharing every time I start iPhoto I experience the same problem where iPhoto is unresponsive with the spinning ball for a number of minutes and it returns to its normal functionality. I have read in the posts +*"Topic : iPhoto 08 gives spinning ball for 2 minutes at launch"*+ to delete the iphoto preference file. So I tried this and it fixed my problem of iPhoto freezing on start up but when I try to turn on picture sharing again the problem comes back. The person in this post thought that the freezing was related to the large size of their iPhoto library but I have two libraries one greater then 30 gigs and one smaller then 3 gigs and I have the same problems with both. If someone could help me or give me insight into how I can solve this problem it would be appreciated.

This is definitely an iPhoto issue not a library issue. It took your advise but instead of rebuilding the xml file the library which sits on my internal drive I thought I would start fresh and make a new library and see if the problems persisted in this new library. So I created a new library and before even adding any pictures tried to share the library and the same problems that I had been experiencing happened again. This would lead me to believe that the problem isn't associated with the iPhoto library or any file in its contents but with the iPhoto program itself. But if this is the case I am at a loss because I have already once reinstalled and updated iPhoto to see if that would correct the problem and it didn't.
    Thanks

  • Iphoto - get spinning ball when importing photos

I just bought a brand new mac book pro.  I had all of my info from my old mac book pro in time machine.  The first time I turned on the new one it asked if I had a time machine backup - short story I restored all of my personal files (no applications).
I was able to import photos once since then.  I have 3 sd cards - not one of them can be imported.  It recognises the card and asks me if I want to import.  I have even tried to only import 1 photo - no matter what I do, I still get the spinning ball and nothing gets imported (I finally have to force quit).
I attempted to repair the library, but it never finishes.  After hours of waiting I end up force quitting it.
One forum mentioned re-installing, but the mac book pro did not come with any disks (yes you read that correctly).

  • Spinning ball when playing from timeline

I keep getting the spinning beachball when I try to play clips from the timeline. They play fine in the viewer. My clips were captured to LaCie HD (which still has 19 GB free) and nothing has changed from other projects that have worked in the past.
Any suggestions? If I can't resolve this, can I use FCE 1.0.1? Will it open my HD project?

  • Spinning ball when safari starts up

    MacBook Pro 15", Late 2011
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
I can't seem to get Safari to open properly. I get the spinning ball of death. Is there a startup  reset sequence I can use to reset the cache or even bring safari up in a SAFE MODE?

    Frank ..
    Check the startup disk ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built-in utilities to repair the disk using OS X Recovery .

  • Bookmark button not working and spinning ball when accessing Japanese sites

I started getting this problem since I updated to 10.5.2. I even removed all the bookmarks and still Safari won't let me access my bookmarks (spinning ball). I also cannot access many of Japanese urls where Firefox can -- it would start to load the page and half way through I get the spinning ball. I tried repairing permission, trashing cache. I'm not sure what else I can do. Can someone help?
    Thank you!

Problem solved! The cause was Linotype FontExplorer X v. 1.2.2 which launched at startup. Update to 1.2.3 fixed my Safari problem.

  • Really long spinning beach balls when trying a video chat

I just migrated from an older Mac to a brand new Mac Pro 2.66. I plugged in my iSight and tried to do a video conference, only to get a spinning beach ball for >1 minute before the video chat commenced.
Later I tried to access my own camera (by clicking on the camera button at the top of my buddy list) and likewise, >1 minute of spinning beach ball, THEN it worked OK.
Going to the Preferences > Video tab, likewise, spinning beach ball.
Any ideas on how to diagnose and fix this?
Already repaired permissions, and tried unplugging/replugging the iSight.

    Hi David,
In iChat > Preferences > Video section you should have a drop down to Pick the camera (either Internal or External).
    Have you done this ?
By default iChat will use the Firewire one as first choice (to the extent of changing mid chat if connected.

  • Safari 5.1.7 Beach Balls when displaying HTML5 video

    Hello all,
I'm coming to you guys with an extremely annoying bug in Safari 5.1.7 (it's been fixed in 6.0, but Apple won't update Snow Leopard machines to the new version).
I have an HTML5 video at http://safaba.clients.numonium.com that is supposed to play above the homepage slideshow when you click the play button in the first slide (the slideshow fades out, video player fades in).
This aforementioned works properly in the following browsers:
    Firefox (current version - 16.0.1)
    Chrome (current version - 22.0.1229.94)
    Microsoft Internet Explorer 9
Microsoft Internet Exploer 8 (uses SWF fall-back, but properly transitions to the video and plays the SWF)
    Safari (current version - 6.0)
    Safari for iOS, iPhone
Safari for iOS, iPad (you have to hit the "play" button twice to get it to play... another issue)
You can use the following credentials to access this site:
    http://safaba.clients.numonium.com
    User: apple
    Pass: FQscoPxhx!
Safari 5.1.7, however, completely goes unresponsive under some circumstances, inconsistently:
When you click the "play" button on the first slide to launch the video player
If the above works, the video might play for two seconds then go unresponsive
If the above works, the video might play until you seek
If the above works, the video might play until you send a scroll event
The browser sometimes (albeit rarely) plays the video flawlessly, but only once completely loaded. If the video does, in fact, play properly, clearing the cache would revive the aforementioned issues. Therefore, I think this bug has to do in how Safari loads the video upon page load.
I've done just about everything I can think of (if I go to the video directly - http://safaba.clients.numonium.com/images/videos/homepage-slideshow/homepage-sli deshow.mp4), the video will play after a few seconds of loading.
So I would greatfully appreciate any and all help anyone can offer - thanks!

I should also mention that when Safari beach-balls, I don't see CPU, bandwidth, or Disk I/O spike (in fact, they're all close to 0), and only about 50% of the computer's RAM is used.
    Thanks again!
