Spinning Beach Ball at login--please help!

Hello! Today I booted my iMac and when I clicked on my username as usual, the spinning beach ball appeared. It was working fine till yesterday! The only two unusual things were yesterday evening, when Safari died on me when a Flash ad loaded and then all the rest of my open applications started not responding (I forced-shut down my iMac and went to sleep), and the Apple firmware update I did on Monday (but again, it was working fine till yesterday). What do I do now if I can't login? Please, please help me! I was very stupid and did not backup the data in my FileVault, so I really need to access my Vault!

Cleaning global and user caches didn't work, cleaning user preferences didn't work, Safe boot didn't work, single-user mode didn't work, the only option left to me was Archive and Install, which fixed my problem.

  • Spinning beach ball at login screen after upgrading to 10.4.8

Ok, I so used software update to install the 10.4.8 update (I know, big mistake, should have used combo update, etc.), and upon restart can't get past the login screen. After several seconds, the spinning beach ball appears and that's it. Been like that for hours.
Booted into single user mode and ran fsck, says that the volume is fine. diskutil stalls out in single user mode (can't place my hands on the install CD, otherwise I'd use diskutil fron that).
    So, ideas?

I had this happen on my wife's iBook G4.. Here's what I did..
Remove the battery.. Unplug the power. Let it sit for a few seconds. (30 to be safe)..
Then plug it all back in
Turn it on and press APPLE-OPTION-P-R immediately after pressing the power button and hold it in for a LONG time.. even after you hear the chime.. keep holding it in for FOUR CHIMES and FOUR initialiations of the CD/DVD drive.
Then let go and let it boot.. you will then see the Apple Grey screen and it should boot normally.. Once it boots, repair permissions immediately.
At least that's what worked on her iBook, exact same problem.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi there,
Are you using input methods? It looks to me like you have set a simplified Chinese input method. I'm curious what it is. If my guess is correct, then if you disable that input method, you shouldn't have the problem. You will need to remove it from the input methods folder inside of /Library/InputMethods.
Also, what is the input method you're using?

    Hi Jan,
Great work so far, how long has it taken those 2.39 GB of PageOuts to accumulate?
    That is from last startup.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Iphoto stopped working, all i get now is spinning beach ball of death.help!

iphoto stopped working, all i get know is spinning beach ball of death.please help.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

Your VM processing shows that you are running too much stuff at once so getting a lot of swapping going on.
Previous to Yosemite not unusual to see page ins to virtual memory -- its when things are being paged in and out that too much stuff is trying to run at the same time.   If you were to upgrade to Yosemite - Yosemite kills processes that are not being used after a certain amount of time.  Try loading less stuff at once.

  • Spinning Beach Ball again after new update,,

Just got the audio fix update, for the popping sound on the 10.4.10 update
I had problem when I first did the update to 10.4.10 with spinning beachball when I did anything involving the airport icon and/or network config, internet connect, et etc, by some small miracle I got it working by manually selecting the network (unfortunately this is not an option these days as it is spinning beach ball territory). I finally got this fixed and then to my suprise, ran the audio fix update and it is back, I cannot do anything without invoking the beach ball, what gives, please help??

    I have a macbook 2.1ghz with OSX 10.5.8 running with 4gb of 667mhz DDR2
Recently I have been getting spinning beach balls of death on a constant biases. They come when I try to open web pages such as google, youtube, espn.com... ANYTHING actually. They come when I try to open applications, they seem to come when I try to do almost anything. I cannot force quit when they come. I have tried waiting for them to go away, sometimes up to an hour and nothing happens. They have come when I try to open utilities to try to figure out what is wrong. They come in safe mode.
I have run disk permissions like someone suggested to you, and that has done nothing.
I made another account for the computer, and that still receives the same amount of beach balls.
    I tried updating software. Nothing.
    I reinstalled the OS, nothing.
I switched the ram out with the ram that came with the computer, and I still get the beach balls.
I ran Onyx, and it said the drives are fine.
Yesterday out of sheer desperation I reformatted the whole thing. (former PC user) At first it looked ok, but then I began to update software and it locked up. Also, now when I open web pages I get a beach ball that SOMETIMES goes away after 5 minutes. Usually it just spins and spins mocking my existence.
What else can I try? What else can I do? I live in a place that makes it VERY VERY difficult to take to a mac mechanic. (South Korea)
I don't want to have to buy a POS PC netbook. Please advise.

My suggestion won't repair anything but it might be able to tell you if you have a hardware issue....(I am thinking that your hard drive may be about to give up....I have seen almost this exact set of symptoms here before)....try running the (AHT) Apple Hardware Test)...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
....when you are booted from your install DVD pay attention to see if the SBBOD goes away no matter what the AHT says...problems found or not when running the tests....and run the extended set of tests.....
If the problem goes away while you are not booted from the internal hard drive....I would strongly suspect the hard drive....
You don't mention having run (Repair) disk from Disk Utility....not (Repair) permissions....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
...again you will need to boot from your install DVD to run (Repair) disk in Disk Utility...

  • Spinning Beach ball for 1 hour after Lion X installation, pls help

I have the Spinning Beach ball for 1 hour after Lion X installation, pls help
How long is it going to take?
Using Mac Book Pro corei5 with all previous updates.
    Thanks

    This happened to me too.
I bought Lion and let it download and install.
I had to leave my computer while the installer was running and when I came back a few hours later it was disoplaying the mac equivalent of a blue sceen: "You need to restart your computer. Hold...".
I restarted and I get to the login screen, but as soon as I start typing my password I get the beach ball and then tha fans start working like crazy.
I upgraded from snow leopard and my home account is encrypted.
    What do I do?

  • Spinning Beach Ball when turning off Airport WiFi.  SL Issues, many!  Help!

I performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard on my new 13 inch late 2009 MBP on release date. All of a sudden, I am getting the infamous spinning beach ball when attempting to disable my Airport wifi. It's so bad, that I am not able to gracefully restart my system. Seriously this is getting out of hand. Snow Leopard was supposed to make Leopard even more stable.
Steps I have taken, not in any particular order.
    Verified and repaired permissions.
Ran HW test, no issues found
    Reset PRAM
    Deleted wifi related plist files from /lib/prefs/sysconfig and rebooted;
The only thing I can think of next is to perform and Archive and Install or....
...As much as I would hate to go back, Install Leopard.
I would appreciate feedback or suggestions as what to do. Looks like 10.6.1 may be worth waiting for. Oh how I miss Tiger.

    HI,
If you use an Airport Base Station or Airport Express, try resetting.
    If that doesn't help...
Boot from the 10.6 disk and verify the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
    Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
If necessary, do an Archive an Install. It's the only install option available for Snow Leopard.

  • HT5103 SPINNING BEACH BALL FINAL CUT PRO..HELP!

Trying to edit a project and the spinning beach ball appears and continues to spin the second I click onto the project.  Seems so sensitive.I've deleted and clean up files etc..in disk utility, went into my osx, cleaned up there. What else can I do? Help!

    Hi!
I have to reply to everyone out there having problems with slow Final Cut Pro X.
Since I got my app I had so much problems. But I upgraded my Powerbook to a 2.5Ghz Intel Core i7 with an external Thunderbold drive.
I have had no problems with anything since then.
So my understanding is that there is nothing wrong with FCP X it self. You need a fast machine and (of course) a fast external drive.

  • IPHOTO 11 causing spinning beach ball and freezing. help

I have a mid 2009 macbook with 2.3 dual core and 2 gb ram. i installed iPhoto 11 after a very successful  10.7.3 install. all was well then i began to import my photos from a thumb drive that i downloaded from a macbook pro onto a thumb drive. after few hiccups i realized i had a file that was stopping the import as it cam eup with the error message. so i deleted that and then about 3/4 of the way through the laptop just choked up and the spinning beach ball started and wouldnt stop. couldnt get it to force quit etc..
so after several days of attempts i gave up ended up having to do a safe reboot too  many times and have now deleted iphoto and all its contents. my mac is working alebit is a bit sluggishly.
any help? is this due to just 2 gig of ram do i need more ram? i am at a loss and i really need to upload these photos but it just doesnt seems worth the hassle

That shoots that theory down.  Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If that library works without a problem your current library is suspect.
In that case if you have the space available on your hard drive and don't aready have a backup copy of the library make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • HELP ... I'm in the land of spinning beach balls !

Hello and thanks ahead of time for any posts to my problem.
I've been successfully working a slide show from stills in iMovie 4 (w/some titles, ken burns, music, etc.)
    It's been going great.
I wish I had a security camera taping me so I know exactly what I did at the end....
I "saved as" to my second internal HD
This save took several min., afterward it seemed to close the movie down and reopen the saved one.
    All is looking well....
but the movie was acting jerky, not smooth as it had been.
I deleted my trash (I figured I didn't need that stuff anymore)
I closed the movie and went to double check the original on start up drive, thinking I don't want to delete anything till I make sure the backup works.
    I can't open the orgiinial.
I can't open the back up on the second drive.
I get the spinning beach ball if I double click on the icon, or if I navigate there from the iMovie start up screen.
... furthermore I found a lot of iMovie type stuff in my desktop trash can that I don't think I put there. I took all that stuff out and put it in a folder on my desktop.
I've worked hard on this project and even tried to back up my work as anyone should.
    HELP !!!!!!!
    -Ray

... the whole project was done on iMovieHD
    I'm OK .... sort of
I went to apple menu-recent items clicked on my movie there and it opened!
I went staight to iDVD, composed the DVD and burned so I have copies for all family members.
My question is, when I go via the finder to one of my movie projects, I can't even single click on it and get info without getting a spinning beach ball. I have to force quit the finder every time
I'm trying to comfirm which project was the last one used, how much space, etc. ... can't do it!
Should I do a Save As to my second hard drive and trust it?
In the future, is there a way to set the default location where iMovieHD and IDVD save to? I'm trying to use my second HD instead of my startup.
Whats the archive project thing in IDVD?
Sorry for so many questions, I can use the applications fine, but I have guesse I have problems on 'managing" the applications

  • Help for slow clients with spinning beach balls.

I work at a school where we have an xsvr 105-000 running 10.5
We have about 100 eMacs running 10.4 that connect to it. They are clients running their desktops off of the server. Each student has their own account.
We are having a continuing problem that no one seems to be able to solve. The computers slow to a crawl everyday. Students get spinning beach balls when they are clicking on sites, paging or scrolling up and down etc.
If someone plugs in with a laptop that does not log into the server and surfs the web there are no problems. No delays.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Are there a maximum number of connections that an xserv server can handle. If we have 60 students logged in are we choking at at the server level?
    2. Is there some setting on the server that could be causing this? (I realize that I have provided no where near enough info for a specific here, but I am only a teacher.)
    3. Any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
Good question. I'm sure there will be others with opinions and experiences willing to share?
In my experience/opinion once you get to around 60-100 users - depending hugely on usage etc - you really should be adding another server to help balance the load. Enabling lots of Services on one box and then connecting lots of clients is a 'classic' mistake to make. It does not end there. Ideally you should be providing gigabit to desktop. Ideally managed switches. You also have to look at what the rest of the network is doing. Important if your situation involves an educational environment. It might be advisable to put mac clients and server(s) on their own switch possibly?
Ideally Server and Client should be the same version although if approached correctly there should not be any problems if the Server is one version ahead of the clients.
    Mileage as ever will vary.
