Spinning beach ball in Leopard mail

There are two actions that always cause the spinning beachball since running Leopard. In both cases the app will eventually freeze altogether or I will have to force quit.
• Dragging a file onto Mail's dock icon which should create a new message with the file attached. worked great in Tiger.
• Creating a new note, then trying to send it.
Has anyone else faced these issues? Any suggestions?

I think I fixed it. Just deleted the preferences file:
username --> Library --> Preferences --> Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Prefs
Then I rebooted my Mac, and launched DW. Now I can actually use the program, without the spinning beach ball.

  • Spinning beach ball with Leopard 10.5 - mach_msg_trap - Hangs

    Hi,
since I upgraded to Leopard, my Macbook Pro hangs sometimes. I recorded today such a hang (10-20 minutes, spinning beach ball) with "Spin Control".
It seam to me, that some resources are locked by the OS. Is anybody able to describe what happens?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Henri

  • Spinning beach ball and e mail ****.

Often I can't open e mails.  This can sometimes be corrected by closing out of the account and reopening.   Today I cannot open e mails, and I am getting that spinning beach ball. Won't go away, I can't access anything. Frozen like my 13 yo PC.

From the Mail app choose Mailbox, then Rebuild. It may take a little while, but see if that does it.

  • Help - spinning beach ball w/one minute of Leopard install left on G5.

I just tried installing Leopard (10.5.4) on my G5 single with "archive and install". It worked fine until the end, where I got a message saying that the installation was almost complete - a minute left. After about 10 minutes, I clicked on the "utilities" menu in the menu bar and suddenly got a spinning beach ball. The progress bar stopped moving at the same time. The situation remained the same for over an hour before I shut down my G5.
I rebooted without the install DVD and got an intro video and then Migration Manager kicked in. The video and Migration Manager continued recycling if anything besides migrating system and network prefs. I went for that as I thought that the other bits could probably be transfered later. I got the following error message:
"Networking settings could not be transferred correctly"
I booted into the system. Looong boot up with a yellowish-white screen, then a black one and then finally I got a prompt to set settings, register, etc. Access to the Internet through my router worked, I also suddenly got a prompt that updates to the system were available. I decided things couldn't get that much worse, so I updated to 10.5.5. The system rebooted and things still seem to be working, though I still think the system boot is long compared to Tiger.
Looking at the bright side, I have what seems to be a working system. I also have a folder on the drive labeled "previous system". What do I do now?
    1) Should I boot from the install DVD and run Disk Utility to check disk is OK and permissions are fine?
    2) How do I get all of my user stuff, apps, preferences registration keys, etc. (particularly my Mail prefs, mailboxes, accounts, etc.) transfered from the "previous system"?
    3) Can I just move the OS 9 stuff that was with Tiger to the trash?
I waited as long as I did to upgrade to Leopard, to make sure that Apple had sussed out the upgrade procedure. This obviously still isn't the case.
    Cheers

You can get your stuff back from Previous System, you will find your old system inside stamped by date and time of the installation, inside Users folder you will find your old home folder name which contains all your things like Desktop, Documents, Library, Music, Movies and Public
Just copy and paste things from your home folder to your new home folder and that applies to your Library folder which stores all your settings, preferences and things like Mail, Contacts, keychain passwords. But be careful because if you copy any problematic file, it will probably cause problems.
If you want for example to copy all your mails, copy the Mail (messages) and Mail Downloads (attachments) folders from your old Library folder to your new Library folder, then in order to copy your Mail Accounts settings and the Mail application preferences, copy a file named com.apple.mail.plist from your old /Library/Preferences to the same exact location in your new system and so on, your contacts are inside /Library/Application Support/Address Book and your safari bookmarks are inside /Library/Safari but if it's FireFox, it's inside /Library/Application Support/FireFox
    hope that helps

  • Mail Plagued by Spinning Beach Ball of Death After 10.6 Upgrade...

    Hello,
After the upgrade to Mac 10.6, Mail is plagued by the spinning beach ball of death. I did get the confirmation that the Mail database had been successfully rebuilt and the window looks fine for a few seconds before the program stalls. I have tried removing the Preferences and Envelope Index files before a restart without any change. Activity Monitor shows Mail eating up just shy of 100% CPU and the infamous "Not Responding" phrase.
    Any clues from here?

  • Snow Leopard = Spinning Beach Ball?

It seems like ever since I installed Snow Leopard, using Safari is a chore. Almost every time I try to open a new tab, I get the Spinning Beach Ball for so long I have to go do something else. Is this an issue with SL? I can hardly get any work done.

I have to say that I'm starting to be angry about all this. I have a Macbook Pro Unibody 2.53 Mhz with 4GB.
Everything was fine. Then I bought Snow Leopard ...
Was this software even tested in the new macbooks?
The system stalls (I get this spinning beach ball) all the time with any app (Apple Mail, Firefox, Safari, System Profile you name it).
This even thought the Activity Monitor says that the system no under any stress.
I don't know why, but I suspect it may have something to do with drivers. But what a heck, isn't the hardware specifications defined and built by Apple.
Can someone post what info is needed to trace the problem?
I have my laptop connected to the company Active Directory, that is the only idiosyncrasy I can think of.
    Best regards,
    Nuno
PS: I don't want support, I want a OS that works as advertised in my latest model Mac Book Pro. Heck, the Windows 7 installed in BootCamp works better then Snow Leopard.

  • Can't seem to get rid of Spinning Beach Ball in Mail

As someone else put it... it seems that Yosemite is Apple's VISTA.  Mail is fast becoming my most annoying App because clicking on almost any email seems to send the signal for the Spinning Beach Ball to appear.  Looking at activity monitor, it says that Mail is Not Responding, and then after a minute or two, the email finally opens.
I'm thinking that perhaps Apple isn't testing Yosemite on older iMacs like mine, a circa 2007 (?) iMac7,1 identifier currently trying to run Yosemite OS X v.10.10.1 on my Intel 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo running 6 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Mail is one issue, I'm also seeing Multiple IP Address issues.  I'm trying to purge EMAils especially those that have images in them... figure I'll part the images on a USB HDD, and delete all those actual emails.  Even that is tough because the minute I highlight
Is there any fix for the spinning beach ball issue?
    Mike

OK, here's my current Etrecheck.  Maybe somebody can decipher this and give me a clue on how to resolve my problems.  I should not that I no longer have Elgato's EyeTV but I'm unsure about the correct method used to remove software like this, especially if there's no uninstall program that completely removes any references to it.  I did run the activity monitor and it seems like Kernel Task (?) is at the top of the list (Shows 541.1MB now) all the time when I select the MEMORY column.  There's 6.0 GB installed, 5.96 GB Used, Virtual Memory 6.28 GB, Swap Used is 59.5 MB, App Memory 4.33 GB, File Cache is 910.4 MB, Wired Memory 666.9 MB, and compressed is 96.8MB.

  • Spinning beach ball of death on opening mail

I've been using mail since i had my Mac OS X 10.4.6, however, when I updated to 10.4.9, as soon as i open the program, i get the spinning beach ball of death, making me force quit the application. basically, i cannot use my mail application!!!

Quit the Mail.app and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail.
Delete the newly created Mail folder.
Move the original Mail folder from the Desktop back to the same location. Copy the original Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
Launch Mail and if successful, decline any prompt provided to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
If this is successful, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and the old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

  • Marking mail as Junk in Tiger Mail causes spinning beach ball

    Hello Everyone,
Lately, if I press the Junk button (or the Not Junk button) it causes the spinning beach ball to come up for about one minute.
This happens in training or automatic mode, I've emptied the Junk mail folder, rebuilt the mailbox and discarded a plist file (but can't remember the name).
    Any ideas?

Yep, it's working fine now that I got rid of the Junkmatcher stuff. Thanks very much!
One other question...I get spam that has blank subject headers, blank "To" fields and blank bodies.
Mail never recognizes it as spam, and it won't "learn" them either. How do I create a rule to filter these out?
    Thanks,
    David

  • No more spinning beach ball when you click on get mail?

    Hi
I just bought a new iMac.
I did not have M/L on my old machine. In the mail program in it (it had Lion) when you clicked on the Get Mail button, a beach ball would spin to let you know that it was looking for mail. There is no spinning beach ball in the M/L mail program. So, how do I know that it is working? Other then when an email shows up in the in box?
    Thanks
    rlmslo

    OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Mail 6.2
The "spinning gear"  activity indicator is no more available in Mountain Lion.
    Apple removed it.
There is a "MAIL ACTIVITY" progress bar available in the left sidebar.
    Best.

  • Constant spinning beach ball, other weird behaviors in Mail

I have been using Mail for years without any problems. Now it gives me the spinning beach ball constantly during use. Could it be because of a recent switch from Verizon to Comcast? At first I thought it had something to do with retrieving messages, which seemed to interrupt message-writing or message-reading. So I set the pref to retrieve manually, but the beach ball continues to spin. It seems random, not related to any particular action, and occurs two or three times every time I use Mail. When the beach ball spins, Mail seems locked up. I also have noticed that sometimes there's a delay when the message headers are loading, and sometimes when I click to open a message, the box comes up empty for a few seconds, then the text flows in. All weird behaviors I have not seen before! Any advice? I tried rebuilding my inbox, but this seems to happen in various user-created mailboxes too -- not any single mailbox.

    Fixed

  • Spinning Beach Ball while MacMail checks mail

Every time MacMail goes to check or send mail, I get about 35 seconds (or sometimes a minute or two) of everyone's favorite spinning beach ball. This just started happening a few days ago.
    Any suggestions?

Seems to be the same issue being discussed at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1382146 since MARCH. Apple, are you listening?

  • Mavericks mail hanging (spinning beach ball)

Since upgrading yesterday the Mail application is constantly freezing (spinning beach ball) and the only option is force-quit. Sometimes happend when I try to draft a new mail, sometimes when I read and email and sometimes on its own when I come back to my computer.
I can make it happen 100% of the time when I try toselect  Mail > Preferences
The dialog never comes up and I get the spinning beach ball.

    Duration:        15.48s

Same problem. Tried everything. I've looked a lot of places and tried a lot of things- and logged nearly 15 hours of time with the highest level of Apple support and got nowhere. Even had them harvest my data logs and uploaded all of that.
Then I found a post on another messageboard that did it for me. Take a look at your:
    username/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist
Instead of being a few KB (as it should have been), mine was 40 MB with tens of thousands of duplicated Hotmail account entries.
I knew all of my mail settings, so I just trashed this file and relaunched the app, then manually added back all of my mail account settings via the mail interface.
Poof- no more issues. No Mail hang. No preference files launching and eating up enormous CPU and RAM. No problems whatsoever. Hope it helps you all too.
Note: this does not eliminate messages, only settings. So the fix takes all of 5 minutes if you remember your mail server settings.
    Cheers.

  • Safari won't open... spinning beach ball

Out of the blue this morning, Safari won't open. I click it, the icon bounces, and then I get the spinning beach ball. If I go to the Force Quit Applications window, it says it's not responding. Any ideas what may be causing this and how to fix it?
    -B

What is the exact wording of the message you see, and what are you doing when you see it?
These are the steps I took this morning, again, along with the wording.  Before these steps, I logged into my account through the Google browser, and verified that I had a purchase in October of OS X Lion:
1 - booted computer under recovery.
2 - Disk Utility - Repair Disk  (Result: The Volume New Macbook appears to be okay)
3 - Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions - (Result:0 Repaired - Permissions Repair Complete)
4 - Reinstall Mac OS - "Your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple - OK
5 - "To Continue, you must agree to the terms and conditions" - Agree
    6 - Select New Macbook - Install
7 - signing into Apple Store  (Result: This Apple ID has not purchased Lion)
8 - rebooted and tried to launch App Store - back to spinning beach balls, along with all other internet apps; Safari, Mail, App Store, iTunes, etc.
Aps not affected: Google Chrome, Outlook (as long as I don't click on an email connected to an HTTPS server) and anything not on the internet.
I hope this helps and thank you for your advice.  I wish I could use my Snow Leopard disks; my dvd drive is broken.
