Spinning Beach Ball on almost every mouse click

I have a late 2009 21.5 imac 8 GB Ram running OS X 10.8.3
Everything was working fine until I the other day when it froze while being woken up from sleep mode.
I then got the white screen of death on every startup.  Safe mode worked though.
I finally reinstalled Mountain Lion and startup worked again.
Now my problem is I get the spinning beach ball of death all the time and it lasts for several minutes.
It seems to happen on all applications at random.  Chrome, mail, app store, finder etc...
I have activity monitor running and it never goes above 5-10%
Any suggestions on what to do to find what is causing the problem?

So I created a new user account, and so far everything is working as though my mac were brand new!
So can anyone tell me the best way to go about transferring files from the old "corrupted" user account to the new one?

  • Spinning beach Ball with almost every click - please advise.

Folks, i have the last core 2 duo 2 GHz mac mini (2009) before they went unibody. It seems like every time I click anything the spinning beach ball comes up - like the computer is slow or always has to think about what it's doing.
I never had this problem with my 2008 model which was much slower (a single core). This machine just seems so slow and not snappy. Any ideas? I don't have the disk set to go to sleep by the way. And this happens system-wide, no matter what application or the finder. the drive is 7200 rpm by the way, 320 GB.
    Snow Leopard- 4GB Ram

When I see the symptoms you've described, I'd first recommend running the Apple hardware test, just to ensure there's not an obvious hardware issue. Not likely on your machine, but you may want to consider that.
Free disk space is another consideration, already asked about above by daddy.
Boot from your OS X installation disk that came with your system, bring up Disk Utility and do a disk repair. If there are no issues identified, repair permissions, while you're there (you can repair permissions from Disk Utility on your applications/library too. You have to boot to your OS X disk to repair your hard drive).
If you don't run a disk maintenance program, you might consider OnyX. Download and run the tasks on the maintenance and cleaning tabs. A number of people have found that this makes a difference on performance. It's located at http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php?sid=86da62a438d18b7b72aad4c9f630b9e0 . Good computing practice says that before using any disk maintenance software, you should have your hard drive backed up.

  • Spinning beach ball, mouse tracks, screen turns to patches of lines

Spinning  beach ball appears a lot, mouse leaves a wide track across screen when the computer wakes up,  screen turns to lines across it, with desktop visible beneath. Really weird. Anyone have similar symptoms?

Hmmm all I can say is my windows shake without me touching anything and my trackerpad is already disabled!

  • App Store on 10.6.8 = spinning beach ball of death

I've never been able to use the App Store on my MacBook running Mac OS X.6.8.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Start App Store.
    2) Successfully authenticate using my Apple ID.
    3) Select a free app.
    4) Click "Free".
    5) Click "Install".
    6) Successfully authenticate as an admin user when asked to do so.
Result = spinning beach ball of death every time, and no app gets installed.
I've tried this many times, tried rebooting etc. but the result is always the same.
    Any ideas?

Run Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utiliites to verify and if necessary, repair the startup disk.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
And how much free space on the starutp disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Spinning beach ball at login after 10.5.6 update

    Hi there,
Are you using input methods? It looks to me like you have set a simplified Chinese input method. I'm curious what it is. If my guess is correct, then if you disable that input method, you shouldn't have the problem. You will need to remove it from the input methods folder inside of /Library/InputMethods.
Also, what is the input method you're using?

  • Spinning beach ball when opening CS3

First I wasn't able to connect to any of my sites, now I'm
getting the "spinning beach ball of death" every time I open CS3.
It is completely unresponsive and I have to "force quit" to get out
    of the application.

I have been having similar problems on my G4 and on my Intel
Macbook since the end of last week and the only changes to both
systems has been the QuickTime 7.6 upgrade for Leopard.
I have used the sampler in Activity Monitor to see what
Contribute is doing while the Beachball is showing and it is busily
doing nothing, waiting on a variety of events, spinnig its wheels.
As far as Flash Player is concerned, the last update goes
back to October and I have been using Contribute without any
problems since then (up until last Friday).
    Any clues?
    Pierre

  • I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).

  • Spinning beach ball with every click

I've got a 3.5 year old Mac Mini 2.3 GHz Core i5 with 4 GB of RAM running OS X 10.9.2. A couple months ago, at no specific moment in time, my mini started to slow down, it's continued to get slower and slower to the point now where every time I click on anything, I get a spinning beach ball for as many as 10 - 20 seconds before the Mac processes what I've done. I have run permission repairs and also bought and installed CleanMyMac2, while it "cleaned" 50+ GB of junk, my Mac's behavior has not changed. Anyone got any other ideas?

  • Right clicking causing spinning beach ball

I am having trouble with accessing contextual menus via right clicking in several applications. I use Pathfinder and every time I right click on a file/folder the program hangs and need to force quit. I searched their forums/support site and saw several complaints about this since Snow Leopard. So I thought it was a PathFinder problem.
Now I noticed it happens also in Excel 2004, Evernote, iTunes 9.0.2.
I have not tested all my apps but it doesn't happen in Mail, Safari, Finder, Address Book, 1Password, etc.
In searching forums, etc. I have found complaints about many of these individual applications without any consistent resolution.
This seems like a bigger issue than an individual application.
I am running SL 10.6.2 and Mac Pro quad core Xeon
    Any help, thanks.
    Jim

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. This helped me isolate the problem. It appears that Pathfinder has a problem.
After I followed you suggestion I tried each of the applications that I was having problems with. First I tried Pathfinder because I have that starting at Login. I still got the spinning beach ball. I forced quit. Then tried iTunes - worked fine. Then I tried Excel - worked fine. Then I tried Evernote - worked fine. Tried Pathfinder again - spinning beach ball. This time I just left it and didn't force quit. I tried iTunes and Evernote - worked fine. Tried Excel - spinning beach ball.
So I rebuilt LaunchServices again and this time tried Pathfinder last. All other applications worked fine until I tried right clicking in Pathfinder then I started having right clicking problems in some other applications.
I am going to share this with the Pathfinder folks. Like I said I did see some complaints of this problems there. I didn't understand that it could cause me problems in the other apps.
btw - after rebuilding the LaunchServices as you suggested I also noticed that my login time was DRAMATICALLY reduced. I load about 10 apps at login and they all loaded very fast now. So that rebuild really helped with that also.
also - I use Onyx about once a month and run many of the recommended scripts. I noticed that they offer an option to rebuild LaunchServices. Do you know if this is the same thing as the command you recommended?
Thanks so much for your help.
    Jim

  • Clicking "All my Files" in Finder causes Spinning Beach Ball / Pinwheel

When I open a new Finder window which defaults to "All My Files" or whenever I click on "All My Files" I get the spinning beach ball / pinwheel.
When the Finder becomes responsive again I notice that at the top of "All My Files" is the "Contacts" and "Calendar" items.  However, only two contacts out of hundreds show up and only one calendar event (from the beginning of the year) shows up.
In the system log I am seeing the following two line every time I click on "All My Files"
Oct 20 08:31:48 bkmac WindowServer[97]: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
Oct 20 08:31:50 bkmac WindowServer[97]: reenable_update_for_connection: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Finder" after 3.42 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
NOTE: I have done a "verify disk" in Disk Utility and it says the disk is fine, though I do have one of the Seagate drives that is listed for warranty repair on my iMac.
This machine was upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion to Mountain Lion and is a late-2009 IMac 11,1 27-inch Core-i5.
Other things in the log that look unrelated, but may still be problematic and appear frequently in the log include:

Any thoughts on resolving the issue?

Regarding the "Contacts" and "Calendar" items -- apparently those files were from saved attachments in the Downloads folder rather than coming from my Contacts address book or my Calendar.  I have deleted those -- I believe that was simply a red herring.
The error in the system.log persists every time I click on "All My Files"

I believe the problem must revolve around this.

  • Spinning beach ball FFv21, mac os 10.6.8, seizes control of my computer every 10 seconds - Im going mad!!

    Duplicate see [/questions/960928]
Im going insane with the spinning beachball on mac when using Firefox v21.
It happens several times per minute with something as simple as choosing the next field on a page or even scrolling down the page using the scroller on the right hand of the page.
Im on a laptop which has os 10.6.8 installed and the laptop has 8gig of ram and a 2.8ghz intel core 2 duo processor.
On previous versions of Firefox I used to get "unresponsive script" warnings with the option to stop it. These warnings would pop up and never give the option to "always stop an unresponsive script AND never take total control of my computer trying to get the script to respond"
There is no option to block the script on the site its coming from.
I did have a block script plug in but no sites work properly if java script isnt enabled.
With Firefox21 I dont get these pop up warnings any more.
I have a lot of tabs open and when the spinning beach ball happens too often I quit firefox and open it again. It remembers my tabs but doesnt load till I click on the tab.
Despite this Firefox will start stalling and showing the beachball spinning only after a few new pages are opened.
It is enfuriating and I dont consider the software to be working properly.
Im wondering has something gottten corrupted in the System Library when firefox installs or if there is a compatability problem with versions of Firefox, my OS10.6.8, Java, Flash?
I can only look at one tab at a time - I WOULD LOVE IF THERE WAS AN OPTION TO
"NOT GIVE ANY RESOURCES TO OTHER TABS WHICH ARENT BEING VIEWED"
I used to use a plug in called Pause All Tabs which was brilliant and gave me back control of my computer. I cant get it for FF21
So what can I do? Use Chrome instead?

  • Spinning Beach Ball at first click on any button

Started out as spinning beach ball on the desk top but pointer was visible and moving on bars but not functional, would drop down but would not force quit. Shut down the hard way and now the SBB is on with the first click of any button and stays on everywhere. Have plenty of RAM and warranty just passed. Please give me suggestions. Thanks rohnjon
    MacOSXpanther   Mac OS X (10.3)

    Repair Permissions.
Go to Mac HD and open it and then choose Applications and open it then scroll down to Utilities and Open it then go to Disk Utility and when you open it click and highlight Mac HD and at the bottom choose Verify Permissions, after it completes this then click on Repair Permissions.
If you can't do this and are unable to retrieve your system.
I am afraid you might have to use the Disc's and do one or the other options Either Archive Install or Erase Install.
I Know this is a pain, but not knowing exactly what all you have done I suggest a complete Erase Install.
This will wipe everything off your hard drive and will reInstall your operating system. I f you had any other 3rd party programs you will have to Install them again.
    Cheers Don

  • No more spinning beach ball when you click on get mail?

    Hi
I just bought a new iMac.
I did not have M/L on my old machine. In the mail program in it (it had Lion) when you clicked on the Get Mail button, a beach ball would spin to let you know that it was looking for mail. There is no spinning beach ball in the M/L mail program. So, how do I know that it is working? Other then when an email shows up in the in box?
    Thanks
    rlmslo

    OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Mail 6.2
The "spinning gear"  activity indicator is no more available in Mountain Lion.
    Apple removed it.
There is a "MAIL ACTIVITY" progress bar available in the left sidebar.
    Best.
