Spinning Beach Ball on New Macbook

Hi All,
I recently purchased the new Macbook Pro 15" with 2.6Ghz Interl Core i7 Haswell, 16GB Memory and 1TB hard drive.
I downloaded the latest copy of FCPX and I am working with 1080p Footage shot on my Canon DSLR. I have a 2009 Mac Pro which lets me do that just fine
without the need to create optimized media however this Macbook is really struggling.
If I select a clip from a timeline I have to wait for about a minute before the ball stops spinning before I can press copy. I have seen much cheaper laptops
using premier pro with the same quality files and them play smoothly. I have no idea what to do here as I don't really want to start converting all much footage
when a machine this powerful should surely be able to handle this.
I have also cleared my preferences and tried other events and projects with the same result.
Is there anything else I can do? I simply want to edit with the raw 1080p footage which is h264 anyway around 50mbps.
Many Thanks

Hi,
Tried that still no difference. I started a new event and project today and when I zoom in and out of the time line FCPX crashes. If I select a set of clips from the timline I see a beach ball, I have to then wait for the beach ball to stop before I can do anything else. I can't work like this, I have the most powerful mac laptop ever built yet its so slow that I can not even work on simple things.
Any other ideas?

  • Constant spinning beach ball with New Macbook no upgrades

I recently purchase a new macbook worked fine first week then it started. Just upon opening Safari I get a "beach ball" I scroll down "beach ball" Open a new page "Beach ball" everything I do in all programs including Itunes garage band the finder Its frustrating. I Reinstalled the OS still the same problem slow crap performance I've owned over 4 macs now and have NEVER been so frustrated any answers would be great

welcome, I have the same, two macbooks sitting here (I am a mac veteran with 20 years experience and 20+ macs bought and used for myself).
But my new white MacBook is a horror. I changed RAMs, installed 10.4 and 10.5 now half a dozen times fresh from scratch and only Apples updates and the machines dances the spinning beachball dance of death and frustration. I will not replicate all the nonworking behaviour what others have described. Just one thing: Each and every problem people have here, my MacBook has also. There is a fault in this series of MacBooks from the hardware side and from Apple! period!
(Beside this Mac I have a 3 month older more expensive black MacBook sitting on my desk and this is working like a charm, no beachball at all!!!)

  • Spinning beach ball on new iMac

Hey, after googling this problem it seems a lot of people have this problem. I have a new (several months old) iMac that will get the spinning beach ball when the computer is not even being pushed. I'm talking about it doing this for 30 or so seconds when only Safari is open. Doesn't seem quite right considering it's a 3.06 GHz 4GB Intel iMac. Is this a software problem? Or did I get a lemon?

    HI,
I'm talking about it doing this for 30 or so seconds when only Safari is open.
Most likely not a lemon but a problem with Safari. Did you install any third party Safari plugins or input managers since you've had your iMac?
If Safari has actually crashed, you can copy/paste a crash report in your reply so we can get an idea of what's causing the problem.
Open a Finder window. From the Menu Bar click Go/Go to Folder
Copy and paste this path into the Finder dialog:

    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/
    Click the Go button.
Finder opens the folder containing the crash log. Look for a the crash file with a date field that looks like the *most recent.* Copy and paste the entire report in your reply.

  • Spinning beach ball suddenly? MacBook Pro slowed to a *crawl*

Was updated to 10.6.2 - All of a sudden last night, I started getting the spinning beach ball for like minutes at a time. No better today after multiple reboots - when the system starts up the ball spins and it takes over 10 minutes for my desktop to fully load up and look normal. Then...if I try and open Finder, Mail, Safari, 8-10 minutes of spinning ball, ultimately it WILL respond, but on the next mouse click back to 8-10 minutes of spinning ball and no work getting done When Safari opens after the 10 minutes or so, it works somewhat OK.
Nothing in the system monitor is an obvious probelm - and the CPU usage graphics completely stop working when the ball is spinning a long time.
    Here's what I've tried:
verify disk - both from install disk and desktop
verify/repair permissions - same as above - one warning keeps popping up "SUID File.....ARDAGENT has been modified and will not be repaired"??
(verify/repair log at bottom of message)
    Reinstalled 10.6 from DVD
    Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    Reset SMC
Used Font Book to resolve duplicates (only a few)
Still no go - everything runs SO SLOW, ten minutes to reboot and ten minutes if I click on finder at a time of the spinning ball? I have not tried software update yet - frankly haven't had time to wait out the spinning ball!! Time machine seems to still be backing up, mail comes in (mail takes ten minutes to open as well), etc.
Some things done in the last few days - uninstalled some old printers a few days ago - and installed a Lexmark pro905 with 10.6 drivers - all of that has been working fine for a few days. Yesterday one thing I did was relocate a VmFusion "Virtual Machines" folder from "Documents" up to my \Users\tomscal\Virtual Machines. Again, that didn't seem at the time to cause any troubles, I worked late into the afternoon after making that change.
    Any suggestions??
    Tom

Well, I tried most of the tips suggested above, and tip/tricks found elsewhere. Nothing worked, I continued to have 10-15 minute hangs with the beach ball spinning. If I clicked on a folder in like Finder, ten minutes would go by then the folder would open. Rebooting took 10-15 minutes.
Finally out of frustration I erased the hard disk using the Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard 10.6 disc, and used migration assistant to restore.
Much to my surprise it worked - the clean install/restore is working OK at the moment.
Hard/long way to fix the problem though.....

  • New (8/14) Macbook Pro Retina - Premiere Pro CC 2014 spinning beach ball

Help! Seems my shiny new wiz-bang 4-core Macbook Pro with 16 GB of Ram and a 512 solid state drive works just fine with Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 until my project reaches a certain size, then it won't open the project and immediately gives me the deadly spinning beach ball. The only way to exit is to force quit whereupon I get the "Sorry, a serious error has occurred...". Aggravating beyond words.
Saw one forum comment where it was recommended to update to the 6.0 CUDA driver, but not even sure I have a CUDA driver. Plenty of space left on hard drive. In Premiere Pro preferences under the "Memory Tab" it doesn't seem to matter if it's set to "Optimize rendering for.... Memory or Performance." I've reinstalled the Premiere Pro App twice. Doesn't help.
    Some specs:
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris Pro
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M GPU PCie
    Intel Iris Pro GPU Built-in
    8 GB DDR# 1600 MHz (x2) = 16 GB RAM
350 GB of 499 GB left on drive
Of the 16 GB of RAM I have 11 available for Premiere Pro and the other 5 GB allocated for other apps.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • New MacBook and The Infinitely Spinning Beach Ball: Anybody Else?

I wonder if I'm the only MacBook owner having this experience, or if there might be some company in my misery?
I purchased a new Aluminum MacBook on Nov.14. This one is the high-end, 2.4GHz model with 4GB of RAM and currently running OSX 10.5.5.
I have in the past few days (or week, or so) encountered what appears to be an intermittent performance failure. I will, for example, be in Apple Mail: Open a new message to compose, and as soon as I click on the open window, the beach balls starts spinning... and continues to spin for a minute or two. Typically, when this starts happening, when I get the cursor back I click again, and the beachball resumes spinning.
This will also happen in Firefox, or, as it did yesterday, even accessing items in the upper-right menu bar. Suspecting an impending hard-drive failure, I clicked the Time Capsule icon in the menu to see when I got my last backup, and instead of getting Time Capsule, I got... the spinning beach ball of death.
The most difficult thing about this dilemma is that it appears to be intermittent. I took the MacBook to the dealer that sold it to me yesterday, was unable to replicate the issues. Everything worked fine in the store. Came home, problem returned for about 10 or 15 minutes, then it went away and the computer performed normally until I closed the lid to go out for the evening.
Then this morning I opened the lid again and.... spinning beach balls for a total of about 17 minutes. And now, again, it appears to be working fine.
While I was at the store, we ran a disc verify in disk utility, and it returned the message "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK."
This is the worst kind of problem -- the intermittent one. I suspect something in the computer itself, in the believe that hardware issues are more likely to be intermittent than software issues; I could be wrong about that, I dunno.
All I do know is that I can have maddening periods when I can't do anything with the computer, and then, just as suddenly, everything goes back to normal.
So I wonder if there might be anything in the circuitry in these new MacBooks that might be causing a similar problem for others. Or is this my unique cross to bear until the thing goes completely south?
    Thanks,
    --PS

Have you tried running the diagnostics from the Leopard disc? If not, give it a go to see what it finds. To run it, boot while holding the "d" key (with Leopard disc in ofcourse).
Haven't tried that, I did not know that was on the disk. I'll run it, how long might it take? What sort of tests does it run, what sort of results should I expect?
Another thing to try is reset the SMC.
Following the link you provided suggests there might be some things in the SMC that could be causing my problems. Should I do that before or after I run the diagnostics? Would the diagnostics tell me if that's something I need to do?
If still nothing... perhaps a reinstall of Leopard.
I call that the "Vietnam Solution" -- destroying the village in order to save it. I thought was done with that sort of thing when I abandoned PCs and Windows. Not a desirable outcome.
As a last resort, you might consider trying a new hard drive. A failing drive can cause theses intermittent delays.
That was my initial thought, too. Are there any diagnostics I can run besides dick utility to determine the integrity of the hard drive? Do the diagnostics on the Leopard install disk do that?
    Thanks,
    --PS

  • Spinning beach ball and black screen on my new macbook pro

After great anticipation, I just updgraded to a new macbook pro from an ibook G4. For the most part, I am thrilled and applications open and web pages load quickly. Occassionally, though, I get spinning beach balls...with more frequency than I did with my ibook and in OS X native apps...such as Safari.
Another problem I am having is in Front Row playing movie trailers: the screen goes black before the end of the trailer, but the audio continues.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    macbook pro 2Ghz, ibook G4, imac G4, power mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

That is the automatic ambient light sensor doing it's thing.
Depending on what machine you have, try turning the screen brightness all the way up. It will buttons on the top row, usually the F-1 for dimmer, F-2 for brighter
Also you can go to sytem preferences>display and un check the automatically adjust brightness for ambient light.
    Hope this helps

  • My Macbook pro started running incredibly slow and I am getting the spinning beach ball of death across all applications.

I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

  • Spinning Beach Ball / frozen finder / SugarSync / MacBook

I'm putting this up with this title to help hopefully many who encounter this:
Just got a 2012 MacBook Air, Refurbished, 8 MB RAM, 256 GB.  It's refurbished by Apple.  I run SugarSync.  On my third day, the finder beach ball started spinning almost every time I clicked on the Apple menu or the Finder icon in the dock or any folder on the desktop. I couldn't get down to force-quit finder without first clicking on a program's open window and then on the Apple menu.  Restarting doesn't solve it, either.  The other thing that was occurring was that my Air was running very hot, the fan was running hard, and the battery was racing to be at 10%.
Thanks to macjack, I seem to have a solution.  I've just retitled the information so others can find it better.  Here it is:
    1.  Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete SugarSync ( - ) as a login item (don't worry, this doesn't delete the program and you can always add it back as a login item with the ( + ) after all the steps below to solve the problem.
    2.  Quit the SugarSync program (to do this, click on its icon on your top menu bar and select Quit).
    3.  Go to Username/Library/Preferences folder, and trash the SugarSync "plist" file, which is:  com.sharpcast.SugarSync.plist  (this is the corrupted file that's causing your finder problem;  and, don't worry, a new, clean plist file for SugarSync with all your information left untouched will be created the next time you open SugarSync).
    4.  Empty your trash; then restart your computer.
    5.  Upon restart, open the SugarSync program and you should now have no Finder, spinning-beach-ball problems.  The fan should be off now and battery power creeping slowly down instead of racing to 10%.
    6.  Finally, put SugarSync back on your Startup at Login list by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items, hitting the ( + ), and navigating to choose it.
You should be beach-ball free now, with no intense battery drain, heat, and fan.
    Hope that helps.

  • MacBook Pro - incessant spinning beach ball

My MacBook Pro is running really slow. The spinning beach ball keeps coming up for almost everything I try to do.
For instance I can't type more than about 4 words in MS word before it stalls out and the beach ball pops up. It's almost like there's some big program running in the background sucking up processing power.
I ran disk utility repair from the OSX Recovery and it didn't show any problems.
Is it possible I caught some kind of virus? Anyone have any thoughts on how to remedy this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Here's the system overview...

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).

  • My MacBook is very slow and constantly has the spinning beach ball of death!!!

In the last couple if weeks my MacBook has suddenly slowed down a LOT. Sometimes it takes ages for it to boot up when I turn it on and at other times not as long. Then once I log in, as soon as I click on something, the spinning beach ball appears and won't go away so I have to force it to restart.
It runs a little bit faster in safe mode and if I log in as a guest user, but it's still relatively slow.
So far I have tried the following:
    - starting in safe mode
    - resetting PRAM
    - turning off then pressing ctrl, option, left shift and the power button for 10 seconds then turn it back on
    - repairing disk permissions
I've been told that it might be best to reformat my mac, but in order to do this I need to back up. I bought a Seagate Back Up Plus 1TB and tried to use time machine. After a while a message popped up saying "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.". There is something on my hard drive, but I cant tell if my mac has fully backed up or not.
    Any suggestions?
