Spinning beachball in finder after upgrading to 10.5.5?

I installed a new intel iMac at a clients site some two weeks ago.
The machine came with 10.5.4 and there is a second monitor connected to it
I installed Adobe CS 3 and Parallels along with all available upgrades from Apple.
For two weeks the machine functioned fine and then suddenly the beachball appeared and the Finders Menus got all garbled.
I threw out some of the regulars. Finder prefs etc.
I then restarted and the machine worked again.
I then reattached all external devices and the machine still worked.
I restarted the machine and it still worked.
I worked on it for a while and it froze.
I removed the plist files again, disconnected all external devices and restarted.
Beachball still there just after restart.
Waited five minutes - beachball still there.
Reinstalled 10.5.4 (Archive and install)
Machine worked fine for an hour.
Upgraded to 10.5.5
Beachball came back instantly just after startup.
During all this I repaired permissions, checked for DivX stuff, removed CS 3 startup stuff, cleared all caches, etc. Also I searched for this problem on the net but have so far not found
I really would like to know if anyone has an idea what is going.
Anyone???
Kind regards
Hans

Excuse me...
but doesn't the subject title include 10.5.5???
I didn't think I needed to be that redundant
since I had specifically chosen that entry to reply to.
Please explain what it means to update your profile.
You are not the original poster (OP), who has a profile posted.
If you look at the bottom of most of these posts you will see the poster's profile.
It tells us what computer(s) and OS(s) you are using and it is necessary in order to answer a question properly. Without knowing what hardware or software you are running, there is little help that can be offered. You may have just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard or from 10.5.0 to 10.5.5.
Your profile is selected on the right of the screen and updating it would be very helpful to anyone trying to assist you.

  • Can't open Finder after Upgrade to Yosemite 10.10

After the Upgrade to Yosemite 10.10 on my MacBook Pro with Retina Display i can't open the Finder and it says it's not reacting. The bar on top when i'm at the Desktop is also gone.
    Can somebody help me ?

I had this exact same issue, and I was just able to fix it (at least for now).  I'm not an expert by any means, so I can't tell you why my solution worked, but if you follow it and it helps, then great.
First, you'll have to restart your computer and open in Safe Mode.  Restart the computer and as soon as you hear the startup noise, press and hold the Shift key.  Release it when you see the Apple icon.  It will take a little longer to start up.
Then download and install the free software called OnyX.
Once installed, open OnyX and click on the Verifying tab, then click on the Preferences tab. Run the Check button at the bottom.  If it tells you that you have any damaged files, double click them on the list, one at a time, and then delete those files.
Then I clicked the Scripts tab, and Executed all three scripts.
Finally, under the Cleaning tab, I clicked on System and executed everything except "CUPS jobs".
I then restarted my computer like it suggested (without opening Safe Mode) and everything was back to normal!
    Hope this helps.

  • Mkv,avi vlc icon issue in Finder after upgrade Yosemite

After Yosemite upgrade I have a problem with vlc icon in Finder.
mkv file don't have vlc icon and show white icon:
some avi file show this icon:
and other avi file show this icon:
I uninstalled and reinstalled vlc but I have not solved the problem......

I used to be able to use Quick Look to view MKV files, and then it stopped. I've been playing around with this the last few days, and now it works again.
I have Perian 1.2.3 already installed like yourself. On a hunch, I re-installed MPlayerX 1.0.17, and Quick Look worked again for MKV files. This seemed to work on my Mac Pro (10.6.8).
However, on my MacBook Pro (10.6.8), I don't have MPlayerX installed, but Quick Look works on MKV files anyway. I don't know what components Quick Look needs for MKVs, but you can try this method to see if it works for you.

  • Lost "Shared" in Finder after upgrade of 10.5.2

I have 2 Window computers that are networked as well as my MacBook Pro.
Prior to my 10.5.2 upgrade I could see and access those other machines and their files.
Since the upgrade the "shared" folder does not display in the Finder sidebar.
I have checked Finder preferences and all the appropriate boxes are checked.
    Any suggestions out there?
Also, after doing a Archive and Install, is it OK to delete the "Previous System" folders that are created?
    Thanks in Advance

Hi, I found Terminal commands within this section of the forum, on page 3 or 4. I don't give them out because I am not familiar, nor comfortable working this deep in the system. You can reset Finder, New Finder window, and try commands.

  • Problems in Finder after upgrade to SL

After up upgrade to 10.6.0 (and also system update to 10.6.1) I can't see HD icon or any other icon on my desktop. Course it's set on Finder Pref to show icons on desktop but selecting or de-selecting has no effect.
Secondary click/tap also doesn't work on desktop.
Also, I used U.S. International Keyboard layout with 10.5.8 and now this option is grayed out and just Brazilian Portuguese is available (it was my second keyboard layout).
    Does anybody has a clue?

Try re-starting Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your Finder functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Why can't I see my applications in finder after upgrading to Yosemite?

I upgraded to Yosemite and now my applications do not appear in finder. How do I fix this?

Well, first of all, Safari is located on the dock. That's how I got Safari open. Although I am a new user of Yosemite I've been using mac computers for over 7 years. So, I'm not a complete moron. Yosemite seems to be a bit inconsistent on my computers. In Finder on my mac desktop computer there is, on the left side, the heading "Devices", in which my mac and my macbook pro are listed. Here the macbook is called "Remote Disc". On the macbook the heading "Devices" is not present. Instead there is the heading "Shared". Here I can see the mac listed but, not the macbook. So, the hard drive for the macbook is not listed in Finder, on the macbook. On the macbook I did attempt to locate the applications folder under my user name, which is listed under Favorites. There I find a folder named Applications but, it appears to be empty. When I click on it nothing appears. I have discovered a work-around though. I can locate my Applications folder by clicking on the hard drive icon on the right side of the desk top of the macbook. So, since I have been able to locate the Applications folder there I have decided not to worry about trying to locate it in Finder. If I were still worried about it, would that be enough information for you? Is that precise enough? I was trying to keep it brief. I didn't want to write a novel.

  • My imac cant regconise the finder after upgrading the itunes7!!!!!!

after restart, the computer seems to run slower, only the top right icon shows up but the others run slowly. also there's no icons (all the folders & files) on my desktop!!!!!!! when i click the tool bar's finder icon, it doesn't work!!!! only safari survives!!!!
what's wrong with my imac????? is it the itunes issue or the hardware problem (something crashing?)
    please help!!!

"Is it run under disk ultility?"
    Yes.
"so what should i do after doing that?"
    Restart. See below.
Save and/or quit your applications & doucuments
    Go to Applications>Utilities Folder
    Click Disk Utility
Click the Volumn (HD) that you want to check.
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (Don't worry about verifying)
When the repairs have finished, you will see the “most important thing”:
    Permission Repairs Complete
The previliges have been repaired or completed on the selected volumn.
    Restart your computer.
See Knowlege Base Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 Using Disk Utility and fsck to resolve startup issues or perform disk maintenance
It is recommened that you should Repair Permissions:
After installing and/or updating an OS
    After installing software
    ===================
Regarding the "Norton AntiVirus Error", apparently you need to update your Anti Virus program and/or should have disabled it when updating iTunes if the downloading instructions stated so.
If you still receive the error after repairing permissions, you will need to run LiveUpdate to update Nortons per their procedures.

You can delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled extensions that are not compatible on the next start in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button to do a compatibility check.
You may also need to "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.

  • Can't see NAS in Finder after upgrade to Yosemite

That's it - before, in Mavericks, my NAS always was visible on the left pane in Finder.  Now, it's gone and I can't find a way to access it at all from my MacBook.

I have a Synology NAS, and have exactly the same problem.
At the moment, I have to use Finder's "Connect to Server" option and put in "smb://DiskStation".
Apple needs to fix this one! There is also a thread on this in the Synology Forums:

  • After Upgrade to Yosemite, all apps are slow.

I upgraded to Yosemite  and all applications are slow.  ( as e.g.. starting to type in this box give me beachball for 2 seconds initially) A big difference in speed from Mavericks to Yosemite. Opening system preferences takes 3 seconds to load, and clicking on Users & Groups takes 25 seconds to open.
    I do not have fire vault enabled.  I did a safe boot and some apps did appear to open faster. Also did a repair disk and rebooted.  No change. When Safari is open it takes 5 seconds to open a new window.   I ran EtreCheck and the report is as follows;
Thanks for any help;( After pasting the EtreCheck text file, I clicked on this box to add the Thanks... , it took 2-3 seconds for the beach ball to stop spinning.)

You could do that, but when setting up your new iMac it is a much better idea to transfer only your existing User Accounts. In other words when Setup Assistant appears, de-select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" and "Other files and folders". That way you will eliminate the possibility of reinstalling potentially incompatible software from your existing Mac or its TM backup. It's best to create new printer queues and preferences anyway.
Your venerable HP 1012 will probably work without any difficulty but if you need its driver download it here. If it gives you trouble try OS X's generic PostScript driver.
After configuring your user account, install original versions of your essential software from their original sources. In other words if you installed them via download from the developer's website, download them again. You might need license keys so gather them. Obviously the Mac App Store makes things easy since anything you obtain from there is already linked to your Apple ID and is easily reinstalled by going to your Purchases page.
Don't reinstall things like AppCleaner, CleanMyMac, Western Digital "Smartware" or any of that junk. You don't need it. MacFUSE is outdated. Research Prolific Technology for potential updates for their serial controller. The one you have may work, or not, but you should re-download its driver.
Consider abandoning Microsoft altogether and migrating to better solutions such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. They are all free with a purchase of a new Mac and are far more integrated with OS X than anything Microsoft will ever be able to accomplish.
The Burr-Brown USB device is unknown to me, so research TI's website for support if you need it.
If your essential software was distributed on optical media, you can use OS X's "DVD or CD sharing" feature to remotely mount the older iMac's optical drive so that you can install its software. It will work as though that drive were physically installed on your new Mac. Having said that, anything that was distributed on optical media is highly likely to have been outdated a long time ago.
If your essential software is old, orphaned, no longer supported, or is no longer available, meaning you have the only viable copy, the only option is to transfer it from the TM backup or older Mac. In that case be very cognizant of the likelihood for incompatibility, and have a plan for uninstalling it should it cause adverse effects. Creating a new TM backup is the way to do that. A new external HD dedicated to the new Mac is a cheap investment. When you are certain you no longer require the older Mac's TM backup, you can erase it and use it as an additional, redundant TM backup or "clone" repository – whichever you decide is best for your backup needs.

  • A Bouncing Safari Icon - at startup (after upgrade fron 1.2)

A bouncing Safari icon with a spinning pinwheel at startup (after upgrade fron 1.2) and finding that safari just will not open - then forced to reboot bact into 1.2 - I wouldf like to find out what 1.3 is all about. by the way I.m also have issues with a "localized string not found" issue.
    Any one have any ideas?

Have you looked at the locked thread at the top of the Safari help list? This I think should help you with the localised string issue you are having. Or if you are lazy....

  • IDisk won't mount after upgrade to 10.5.3

I can't access my iDisk after upgrading to 10.5.3. I can sync calendar, address book, etc., but cannot access the iDisk.
The error I get tells me that my *"Member name or password maybe invalid"* and also "*An unexpected error occurred (error code -8056)"*
My member name and password are valid because I can sync and access iDisk via the web. I just can't get the iDisk to mount in the Finder after upgrading to 10.5.3.
    Any clues??

I think I have identified the problem, and have a work-around:
With 10.5.3 the System Preferences have changed for the .Mac settings. In order to get the iDisk to mount, you need to disable the automatic login for .Mac in System Preferences. Once you have "Singed Out" of .Mac in the System Preferences you will then be able to go the menu bar under "Go" and mount the iDisk. The iDisk will not mount in the Finder icon called "iDisk" but will mount as an icon with your .Mac username.
    Here's how to do it:
    Open System Preferences
    Click .Mac
    Click "Account" tab
Click "Sign Out" button and acknowledge
Go to Apple Menu Bar: Go>iDisk>My iDisk and sign-in as usual
+Finder will launch but iDisk will mount under your .Mac username NOT under iDisk icon+

  • Spinning Beachball after downloading latest version

Ever since downloading the latest version of iPhoto last week, after I'm editing a photo in full screen and I click on the "X" to exit full screen, instead of exiting I get a never-ending spinning beachball. All I can do at this point is force quit. After reopening iPhoto, I find that my editing changes were somehow saved to the thumbnail of the photo I was editing, but when I click on the thumbnail to expand it, the previous non-edited photo appears. What could be going on?

    First to the spinning beachball:
Try delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    As to the other issue:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • After upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the virtual memory while using external HD

after upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the "virtual memory size" while using external HD. I check it using Activity Monitor and found that "Finder" wll increase the "Virtual Memory Size" and "Private Memory Size". and then after a while. the system told me my HD is full and hanging there.
My External HD is 1TB. and I have installed new version Paragon NTFS for Mac V.9.01. I am not sure it is related or not.
but I attached my external HD. the "Finder" will start to increase the "Virtual Memory Size".
please help out this case and solve this issue.
    thank you !!!

The one has nothing to do with the other. Virtual memory size and Private memory size are used by developers to analyze their software. it has nothing to do with anything related to the user.
