Spinning Beachball on many applications

I am running 10.7.2 on a client computer (iMac Quad Core, 8GB RAM) with the network home directory on a 10.6.7 server.  Since upgrading to lion, many applications stall when performing simple tasks (copy, paste, open, etc.).  I've have numerous issues with Preview, Mail, iCal, Address Book.  I'll open a file, the application will stall for about 30-60 secondsm, and then complete the task.  I've repaired permissions, repaired the disk, monitored Activity Monitor, but cannot figure out the root cause.  Any advice on what I can check?  Are there known issues with 10.6.8 server w/ 10.7.2 client?
Please help!  I have had nothing but bad luck with lion.  BTW, I'm running the 10.7.2 at home with the same computer, but w/o network home directories and have many of the same problems.
Thanks,
Bill

Okay Guys & Dolls,
New development - I think this may have worked!  I took the advice of Stanley Horwitz, and opened the Console App; I read through the strings of data that happened in the last 8 hours or so, and there were many instances of errors with the DIV X Plugin...
So, I checked in on my System Preferences, and it turned out that it was built on the 32-Bit Architecture, because when I clicked on its icon, the pane tells me that it will need to quit and close out first to reenter the 32-Bit world.  So, of course, I uninstalled* that, and I also did the same with all the other old-old-old plugins in my System Preferences.  Then I restarted, and it seems to (at least) be doing much better than it was...
Hopefully this will be the solution.
Give it a try, MISC_IT!
*I recommend the free program AppCleaner to do all my dirty work...

  • Spinning Beach Ball - Many applications

I thought I was having trouble with iCal because after launching it, I couldn't do anything without the program decide to stop responding. The more I try to do other things, I'm finding the same is happening with other applications. I don't have a ton of my iBook but I can't do anything on it besides launch applications at the moment. Once an application opens, it becomes hosed. Can anyone please help?

Thanks for the link. I read it but don't feel as though it really fits my situation. I am trying to run only one application at a time (and had no trouble doing so in the past). No other changes have been made to the system, other than the addition of the software "Missing Sync" so that I could sync my Palm to my .mac account, etc. I have no problem uninstalling that if that would help. Does anyone have any thoughts?

  • Nothing but a spinning beachball!

Everything I attempt to do is met with a spinning beachball!
After running automatic software update for Aluminium Keyboard Update + Quicktime Compatibility Update and iTunes 7.4.2 in one session I'm met with the spinning beachball with every application I try to use.
The mac boots up OK, start up safari OK for instance click a link and it gets halfway and hangs, same as with mail - starts up then hangs - then if it happens with Finder.
Safe boot works OK, I've archived and installed off the disk and that seemed to work OK until I attempt to update to OS 10.4.10! That goes through the process OK, privileges are fine, disk repair came back positive. So now I'm well and truely stumped.
I had noticed that the Date and Time display in the menu bar tends to disappear! - Coincidence?
I've searched the forums has best I can but to no avail.
    Anyone with any ideas?
    Thanks!

Except for the keyboard & mouse disconnect all devices from your computer.
Repair disk/permissions directly from your System Install Tiger DVD. See what turns up if anything.
Use Preferential Treatment which is a FREE utility that does all the work for you in checking for corrupted preferences.
    *To check corrupted fonts:*
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    ======================
Font book can examine your fonts for problems.
    Applications>Font Book
Select your main main font library.
    Then go to:
    Edit>Validate Fonts
After selecting the above, any problematic/corrupted fonts will appear with a check mark, a yellow exclamation point or a red X icon.
Check the box for any font you want to remove and click Remove Checked.
TIP: Errors & warnings can be hard to find in the master list. Use the pull-down menu to find them. It's much easier this way anyways.

  • Spinning beachball of death won't go away, iTunes always crashing

I've been having problems with my MacBook since updating to iTunes 8.2.1 a couple of weeks ago. After updating iTunes would hang on the spinning beachball and crash constantly- the application was totally unusable. I removed iTunes, reinstalled it and rebuilt my library. After that iTunes worked most of the time, but occasionally would get hung up on the beachball.
Over the past couple of days it's gotten much worse. I'm unable to have both iTunes and Firefox (or iTunes and any other application) open at the same time- I get the spinning beachball and have to force quit everything. It usually takes several minutes for the force quit command to actually work. Today I downloaded a show from the iTunes store and iTunes crashed halfway through. I was able to re-open iTunes and get the show downloaded, but when I tried to open iTunes again several hours later I got a message saying something about how there was a problem and that my iTunes library has been renamed as damaged.
I removed and reinstalled iTunes again and now iTunes won't open at all. I don't know how to move forward at this point. I ran disk utility to check the permissions and there were a number of problems, but no matter how many times I click repair permissions they reappear. (Permissions differ on "System/Library/Components/AudioCodecs.component/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .) It's the same permissions issue over and over. I don't know how to fix this.
Does anyone have suggestions on what steps I can take? Right now my computer is very frustrating to use because I'm not able to use more than one application at once, and I'm not sure if this is because of the problems I've been having with iTunes, or if it's something else altogether. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve their issues with iTunes?

  • Spinning beachball on login/authentication, but only when connected

Since installing a new router (Linksys WRTP54G) and Airport Express (in WDS mode), I get the spinning beachball of death when logging in after sleep, switching users, or authenticating on a wireless iBook G4 (OS X.3.9). I've waited for many minutes, but the beachball doesn't go away. If I turn off Airport, everything works fine. I don't have this problem on my other wireless laptop (Powerbook G4).
Below is an excerpt from the iBook system log in case it's helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    iBook/Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Linksys WRTP54G router, Airport Express

You might have to update your Airports Firmware and
    your OSX.
Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't updated my OS, but I did update the Airport Express firmware (to v6.3). Unfortunately, I still get the spinning beach ball.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Beachball when switching applications

Almost every time I'm working in Motion, and I switch to another application, then come back to Motion, I get the spinning beachball for about a minute. I've tried the QuickTime re-installation thing with no luck. Any idea of what might be causing this? I'm using Motion 3 with 3GB of RAM and plenty of hard drive space (it happens with Motion 2, as well).

Perhaps you have too many windows open. When you are browsing, a lot of desktop memory is used to switch between windows and links, and the toolbar memory. If you are done on the web, close the window. Also try the yellow button to minimise the window to the dock.Open the windows on your screen by using the dock icon. I'm new to Tiger, but have noticed that on my G3, it seems to take a moment to park the window, before opening the next when clicked to activate.Stickies got under my skin on OS 9, so I kept them turned off. Check your preferences. Perhaps they may be set to pop up periodically, or daily if you have worked past midnight. For the Finder window, If you have first opened the finder and left the window open, remember that the Mac Finder operates the desktop. Because of the 'hot zone' around your curser, you may be clicking on the hairline of desktop around the window, actvating the desktop, will give priority to the finder window, and the stickie window. If your Mac is new, call apple (during the workday ). Your Mac has a full year of Apple care included.

  • My G4 keeps giving me a spinning beachball

I have a G4 tower running 10.4 something.  I can't get in to see which 10.4 because everytime I do anything the spinning beachball kicks in.  When it times out, the very next time I do anything it kicks in again.  I am attempting to install the OS again, but for some reason my external DVD drive isn't showing on the desktop.  I have tried ejecting the system disc several times and putting it back in again, but the computer won't recognize it.  I attempted to restart from the external drive, and a file with a ? on it was on the screen rather than the regular icon.
Is there any other way to get the system re-installed, or is there something else I can do to get rid of the spinning beachball?  I am using this computer as a back up to my laptop, and recently when my video card went bad on my laptop I discovered that my desktop G4 didn't work either.  I hated being without a computer for any length of time and I need to get the G4 up and running as a true backup.
FYI, I also have a smallish extra internal drive that does not have a system on it.  As I recall, I couldn't get them daisy-chained when I installed the extra internal drive.  I just use it as backup for my data.
Any ideas, besides dumping this computer and getting another (I have NO money)!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Carole

    >Apparently there are quite a few issues with this "slave" srive.  Could that be what is causing my apparently intermittant issues?
Indeed it can. Open Console in Applications>Utilities, any repeating errors?
    >Any ideas on how to get it to boot from (or restart from) the iPod?
Is this a USB or Firewire iPod? G4s cannot normally boot OSX from USB, only FW.
    >OOPS!!  I marked the wrong one "Correct Answer"!!
I like getting points here, (only about 1 in a 100 do so at times), but I hate undeserved points!
    >When I rebooted my G4 normally, it still didn't "see" the DVD external drive.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)

  • HT2506 I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any Preview updates in the works. I find there is a problem with Preview crashing, or taking a very long time to "catch up" (spinning beachball of death) while I'm editing.

I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any updates to this program in the works. It seems Apple is constantly updating its software, except for Preview. I find it crashes all too often, and also takes forever to "catch up" with me (as in spinning beachball of death) when I'm editing a lrge amount of photos. Yes, I know I should be using Photoshop or somesuch, but it's just too **** confusing, and I don't have the time to figure it out. Thanks!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Since upgrade to 10.5.8, frequent temporary hangs (spinning beachball)

    Good day!
Since updating to 10.8.5 on my MacBook Pro (15" unibody design), I'm encountering frequent visits (every 5 to 10 minutes) by the spinning beachball which last for 30 seconds or so.
At first I thought something might be slurping up all the processor power, but Activity Monitor isn't showing anything. The one thing I haven't checked yet is whether it still happens if I'm not connected via AirPort. The incidents do not appear to be limited to apps using the Internet.
    Any great ideas? Thanks!

Been having the same issues happening on the same machine as you. I did this yesterday, and so far so good.
    1. Restart in safe mode (Hold down shift key when you hear the chime)
    2. Under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities, select your hard drive on the left column, and click "Repair Permissions"
    3. Once done, restart
It's been a day since I've done this, and no beachballs yet (fingers crossed)

  • Spinning Beachball of Death . . . why did I have to Force Quit ???

    Folks:
Last week I had an episode of multiple recurring "application not
responding" errors while trying to select and scroll down through a couple
hundred pages of text in a manuscript of approx. 1.8 MB in size in my word processor, Mellel. As I scrolled down about half way the spinning beachball started spinning and the scrolling process became slow, sluggish, and then unresponsive . . . . I force quit and repeated another 2x to no different response. Finally did "select all" to whole doc and then had to go in to the few pages that I had originally not wanted to select and change them to back to what I wanted . . . a little bit "bassakwards" but I got it done the old fashioned way. Now, when I attempt to "save edits" as I'm going thru my doc the beachball will spin for different periods of time. This is mostly an all text doc with just two (2) photos that have been "inserted" into the doc--seems like the photo's are smaller files than the original, and about 250 pp.
So, the question is is mr Mel (Mellel) trying to tell me something about my system; is this perchance a sign that Macinto II (the 2nd HD in the iBook) is coming close to its ultimate demise? A few years back I began having "issues" with mr Mel that eventually were shown to be signs of the end of Macinto I (named after the famous Seminole Indian chief who fought the US Army to a draw in the Everglades). I had just run the Apple Hardware test just a few days before this
recent episode all happened and it seemed to be OK. But it has been mentioned
here that mr Mel is "processor intensive" and could be just testing the limits
of my 2nd HD??? OR is the test over and all that is left is the funeral pyre for
    Macinto II??
Would essentially a 2MB Mellel file be too large for my 933 MHz G4 iBook
    with 640 MB DDR SDRAM running Mellel 2.2.7 (build b9) on 10.4.11 . . . to handle
even if it was totally in fighting condition?? Or is the probably 3 year old HD
being brought to expiration by having to deal with running the features that are
brought to the table by mr Mel??
    Thanks for any thoughts,
    eep

Word processors typically load a large portion of a file into RAM for editing. When more of the document is needed it pages out the unneeded portion and reads more of the document into RAM. So in practice no document is too large. None of your "surmises" would seem to make sense.
A more likely scenario is disk corruption or file corruption assuming the hard drive isn't failing. Continued forced shutdown of the computer is a sure fire way to corrupt a hard drive if not cause it fatal damage.
    I suggest reading the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Spinning beachball of death issues

I have 2,250+ cards in my address book along with 9 groups - I'm starting to notice the spinning beachball of death occurring for a second or so at a time every time I edit an entry, search or move entries into groups.
It occurs no matter how many other apps are running. Am I reaching som ekind of threshold or is there another issue I need to investigating?
Thanks in advance for your time.
    DK

Another user with a similar problem has tried some things that indicates this could be a system-wide issue that has nothing to do with the actual contents of the Address Book database. You may want to try some of the things I’ve suggested there in case any of them work for you:
Address Book "not responding" when editing

  • Can't open a new Pages document - spinning beachball of death.

I have an early 2008 imac, running mavericks.
I can open an existing document in Pages, but if I try to open a new document, I get the spinning beachball of death.
I deleted and reload Pages, also reloaded Mavericks. it didn't help.

The truth? That's it, I've exhausted the possibilities.
    Simply don't use Pages 5.
I don't enjoy all the hand holding and crying on shoulders of the users frustrated with all the lost features and ultimately lost work.
I've said it before and will say it again Pages 5 is an unannounced beta, and still is at v5.2.2.
If Apple had any regard for its users and their valuable work it would have built in real compatibility with prior versions and the mainstream MsOffice world and released this when it actually worked.
If you have an older Mac, surely you also used earlier versions of iWork which should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • I have been having the perpetual "spinning beachball" problem.

I get the perpetually "spinning beachball" when doing simple tasks in FCP X. It will happen when I try to place play, or move to a different part of the timeline. I tried many things, like resetting the preferences file, and reinstalling. After reinstalling, everything seemed to be working fine, but I was working on a different file. When I went back to the file that was originally having the problems, the problems manifested again. This led me to believe that the problem was that particular file. I looked into the file and it is a whopping 26GB! This leads me to believe I am having problems because the file is so large. Is there a way to compress it but stil have it usable? Please let me know! This has taken up a lot of my time trying to figure out. Thanks!

Where did the file come from?
When you select it in the Event browser, and use the inspector (command-4), what does it say in the "Info" panel? That should tell you the codec/format.
To optimize the media, select it in the Event browser, and in the "File" menu select "Transcode Media..." On the next screen you have options for "optimized media" and "proxy media." Note that you might have already created these when you first imported.
Finally, what kind of computer are you using; be as specific as possible with regards to type, year you bought it, amount of RAM. you can get some of this info from using "About this Mac..." from the apple menu.

  • Spinning Beachball: what's going on?

Hello everyone. I keep getting the spinning beachball with even the simplest of actions. What do I mean? Allow me to elaborate. This is happening so often that I've ran several virus scans, I've done the permissions things, run daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts, deleted plists, etc. Here are a few of the scenarios. I use the mouse to use the scrolling bar: I get the spinning beach ball
I click to open a new tab: spinning beach ball
I drag a file from the Pictures folder to the desktop: spiining beachball and the  message Moving to desktop (I timed this and it literally spinned for four minutes before the file showed up on the desktop.
I get an application dialog window prompt. I click Ok, Next, whatever: spinning beachball.
I click a link: spinning beachball
It doesn't always happen but it does very often. Out of frustration I restart the machine. That seems to help for a short time. Any ideas?
Okay, my puter is a Macbook 7.2 and they don't even make them anymore but gee whiz. Sorry, I'm frustrated and don't understand what is going on here.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped during that interval. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Spinning Beachball when Preview in Browser is selected

I've spent several hours looking at the threads for slow
Dreamweaver, and have yet to find anything that works for me.
Whenever I choose, Preview in Browser, I get a spinning beachball,
and the page finally loads after 30-60 seconds.
I'm using an Intel Mac on a localhost server. Everything was
OK until recently. Now it's just too time consuming to wait to see
previews. Any original thoughts from the forum or anyone at
    Adobe?

I'm sorry that I don't know the solution to what you
    describe. But I wanted
to mention that I have barely, if at all, used the Preview
    feature in the
past year or two (and many web sites built).
Dreamweaver's Design View is pretty accurate in the later
    versions, so I
tend to use it to get a general idea of the layout I'm
    producing, uploading
the files to the server to check them in real browsers.
