Spinning pinwheel brings Mail to a temporary but regular halt after Yosemite upgrade

I updated to Yosemite on October 19 and didn't encounter any major problems. But beginning four or five days ago, I'm now getting frequent, regular appearances of the spinning pinwheel when viewing or typing Mail messages. When this happens, Mail ceases to function until the pinwheel disappears. I cannot move, open, close, delete, type, or do anything in Mail for ten to fifteen seconds at a time. I'm trying to detect a pattern of when this occurs, but so far I haven't found one. I have made no other changes to my system in this time and I never experienced this before using Yosemite.
Needless to say, this makes doing anything in Mail extremely tedious. I have an iCloud account, several Earthlink (POP) accounts, and one Exchange account. This seems to mostly affect messages on the Exchange account (which also, coincidentally or not, now take a very long time to load, especially if they include attachments of any size). I have quit and restarted Mail multiple times and shut down and restarted the computer multiple times but the problem persists. I have a 500 GM hard drive with more than 180 GB free and 16 GB of RAM, so why the Mac needs to be search so often and so long for something is a puzzle..
Has anyone else run into this phenomena and is there a way to make it stop?

I would first do the following 3 items before anymore drastic things:
1. use disk utilities to repair permissions
2. Do SMC reset
3. Do PRAM reset
then if no change look at other possibilities that I'm sure someone in this discussion will suggest.

    Hi,
When I read these Threads in Yosemite I am filtered to show only the one listing Messages (the App) as the App involved.
This form of tagging a Thread no longer shows up in the current software used to run the Discussions.
Did you use the Mail and the Messages tags ?
It is difficult as many Mail help items refer to emails and "messages".
With me posting to the thread it should raise it to near the top again and maybe someone who knows about Mail will post.

  • Mail does not work after yosemite upgrade

I have two iMac desktops, one iMac 27" bought this year and another iMac 24" bought four years ago. I applied the Yosemite upgrade for both they were both running the Maverick with no problem at all), the new one works flawlessly but the old one has one problem with Mail, it won't send emails, it does receive them alright though. I tried using the service provider (Swisscom) repair tool and it says that all emails parameters are correct.
One thing strikes me: Whereas the new iMac received a visible new graphical upgrade of the Mail software (meaning a translucent background and different colors in the left column), the old 24" still has its old looking black and grey background showing that Mail was not (fully?) upgraded. Very frankly I dont care about the graphical upgrade as long as I can use my Mail programme.
Would anyone please help me to recover from this situation please? I do insist on the fact that all parameters of the email accounts are correct and were not changed at all. Thank you.

For those of you having email password issues, I'd suggest:
    1) Close your mail client (i.e. Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc).
    2) Launch "Applications" > "Utilities" > "Keychain Access.app"
    3) Select "login" from the sidebar top left area, then select "Passwords" in lower left area
    4) Click into the Search box in the upper right and search for your ISPs server names.  For example, type "aol" or "google" or "comcast", etc.
    5) Look through the search results for password entries related to your SMTP (outgoing) or IMAP/POP (incoming) mail servers.  Select them and delete them.
    6) Open your email client and try to receive mail, and then to send mail.  You should be prompted to enter your mail username and/or password.
Hopefully this might fix issues for those of you using mail clients that use Keychain for credential storage.

  • Can't set up Outlook email in the Mail app. All fine on my phone but not after Yosemite upgrade

I've gone through every Microsoft screen saying how each account should be set up and nothing is working. I've managed to set up my business account which 1and1 Webmail without any issues at all. I have tried pretty much everything I have seen on here so any help would be brilliant as it's causing me a whole host of problems and this is after I had to reformat my HHD after a problem with the Yosemite install  and this is on both my MBP and iMac

Try this procedure to be sure of a proper restart.
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)
I would also try: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

  • Share via Mail not working after Yosemite upgrade

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded from Lion to Yosemite and now I cannot use the Send via Mail option in Pages (or Numbers for that matter).
I searched for this already in another tread but the answer (permission repair) did not work. The Exporting option still works, although it wants to save the file in a strange location, namely LIBRARY - CACHES - CLEANUP AT STARTUP - COM.APPLE.IWORK.PAGES.8572.TEMP.XXXXXXX    instead in DOCUMENTS or DESKTOP.
Any and all advice on this small but annoying inconvenience is welcome :-)
    Thanks
    Ray

Pages '09 v4.3 has lost this capability on Yosemite. Export to desired document format, and then drag/drop into Mail body.

  • Thunderbird SMTP (outgoing mail) doesn't work after Yosemite upgrade

I just upgraded to Yosemite on my Macbook Pro, and since I did that I am unable to send outgoing e-mails on Thunderbird from any one of the four accounts I have. I was able to find a fix that worked on the Apple Mail app, but I would much prefer to keep on using Thunderbird. Any ideas?

  • Mail will only send from iCloud after yosemite upgrade.

I cannot send mail from my original outgoing server. It shows under accounts but has a (offline) suffix. I can receive on all accounts. The password are there and have been checked.

    Hi Brett,
Thanks for your response. The outgoing mail server has been checked and double checked, it is the same as my iPhone and iPad which both work perfectly. In fact one test message did succeed but only after sitting in the outbox for several hours. Another did not after sitting in the outbox for more than a day. The server does show (offline) but there is no reason for this - the same server is on line on my iPhone etc.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Mac Mail is sluggish after Yosemite upgrade, does anyone know why or what to do?

Hi, I recently upgraded to Yosemite and have hated my mac mail ever since. I have noticed that my mac mail is extremely sluggish and I have had to re-start my mac multiple times.
It seems that everything else is working like usual, and I have read some similar forums and have tried re-indexing and re-building my mail boxes, but so far nothing has changed.
    Any thoughts?

You restart your Mac because Mail is sluggish, not for any other reason? And is it still sluggish after the restart?

  • Duplicate iCloud Accounts in Mail after Yosemite Upgrade

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I now have two iCloud accounts in Mail (but not in other applications like Notes or Contacts).
Both appear under Mail/Preferences/Accounts, but when I try to delete one I get the message: "The Mail Account [email protected] is shared by other applications on this Mac. You can remove this account in Internet Accounts". Yet when I click through to Internet Accounts, only one iCloud account exists.
I have tried logging out of my iCloud account and restarting as suggested in another post. The original iCloud mail account remains whether logged in or not, but doesn't show up at all in "Internet Accounts" so I am unable to delete it.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

Hi, sorry but I didn't keep track of exactly what I did. But I think it was:
While logged into iCloud, I opened Mail/Preferences/Accounts and adjusted the username in the newer iCloud account to make it the same as the username for the original iCloud account (this one was greyed out). A warning came up asking me if I wanted two iCloud accounts with the same name. I clicked yes.
I then logged out of iCloud, and restarted my computer. Going back to Mail/Preferences/Accounts I was now able to delete the original iCloud account.
Finally, I logged back in to iCloud and the new iCloud account showed up in Mail.
Hope that helps. And that I remembered correctly!

  • Mail smtp list lost after Yosemite upgrade

After updating to Yosemite 10.10.2 and the mail.app , now every email that I have to send doesn't have the SMTP list that i had. It lost everything and need to re-setup every account. What happens ? Really is the second time that I have a problem with Apple  mail app. I'm considering to move to my older mail software: Thunderbird. Never had a problem even changing machines.
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO recover that info with out resetting more than 25 emails accounts.....

I have reinstalled Yosemite with the help of Apple support, but the only account that will work is iCloud. Hotmail won't send or receive, Gmail will send but not receive. iPad mail working fine, so its not Hotmail or Gmail's fault.

  • Mail doesn't launch hidden anymore after Yosemite Upgrade

I have the Mail.app configured as a hidden startup item, so it would launch in the background, when I logged in to my system. Now, after upgrading to OS X Yosemite, the app launches visible, which is annoying. It is not the active app (the Finder is), but it's visible. I tried to remove it form the startup items and added it again, but it didn't help. All other apps launch hidden, I tried it with iTunes.app and it worked fine. Does anybody know a solution for this problem?

    this is sort of complicated.
Mail was working on my MacBook #1.
I then was migrating stuff from MacBook #2 over to #1./
after that is when Mail quit.
but I thinkI tried to open Mail on #2 before I migrated, and it didn't work.  and, it still doesn't work on #2.
Then I just put in the Everything Else disk (has finder, iChat and Mail) ... reloaded it on #1, and #1 still doesn't work.
I get the same message:  Mail failed to launch.
