Spinning wheel even after format

Hello,
My macbook pro became very slow and about everything I do causes a sinning wheel to appear. I formatted and still have the same problem. Ran a memtest and nothing was wrong. I'm keeping an eye on Activity monitor and CPU is never at 100% when the spinning happens, neither before, nor after.
Hard drive doesn't seem to fail. Let me know how we can double check it.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you running any A-V? If it's an iMac 21.5, I don't think you're running Leopard, 10.5. Probably at least Snow Leopard, 10.6. This is the Leopard forum.
This article says meant for 10.3.9 and eariler, but contains some still useful suggestions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411
Try a Safe Boot. Shift at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot. This will bring you to a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
    Look at this as well.

  • Mac Book Pro on boot up, the apple sign will appear with the spinning wheel.  After some time, a grey screen wil appear with a movable mouse, but will not boot up.  Help!

Mac Book Pro on boot up, the apple sign will appear with the spinning wheel.  After a period of time the screen will turn grey, but the mouse will still operate, but not boot up.

If it was purchased brand new then it's running a version of Lion, so to reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011") and which version of OS X are you running?
You may want to try resetting your SMC -> Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 Spinning Wheel (even on a new album)

I'm stuck! I'm on a 2006 iMac with OS X 10.6.8. After updating to iPhoto 9.2.1 through Software Update, iPhoto refuses to run properly. After much finagling (repair disk partitions, rebuild iPhoto library, etc.), I was able to get it to open my existing library, but as soon as I connected my camera, I got the spinning wheel of death. Now, if I just *open* iPhoto, I get the spinning wheel of death before I can do anything at all. As suggested in another thread, I tried holding option and opening iPhoto and creating a new album - that too gives me the spinning wheel! (My camera is *not* still connected.) Any suggestions?

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7)  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Touchpad does not work even after format - x220t

    Hi there,
I've had my X220 tablet for about 10 months and it has been great.  For the last month however, the touchpad and touchpoint have become flaky.  When rebooted or coming out of standby, the touchpoint/touchpad often did not work; after resetting a few times, i would work, but then stop working again when the system when into standby mode.
I thought this was a driver issue, but uninstalling and reinstalling to the newest drivers did nothing.  I have also updated/reset the BIOS.
I have more recently have not been able to get the touchpad working at all now and relying on just the touchscreen for input is very frustrating.
When Windows 8 CP came out this week, I decided to give the computer a fresh format and reinstall Windows --- maybe that would resolve the issue. No luck.  The touchpoint/touchpad did not work even in Windows 8.
I read around a bit and have tried disabling JUST the touchpad in the BIOS, and amazingly, the touchpoint will work fine when I do that.  When I disable just the touchpoint or leaving both enabled, neither the touchpad or touchpoint will work.
As far as I can tell from what I have been able to diagnose, the touchpad is damaged and is causing a conflict with the touchpoint when enabled.  I am not sure of this, but it is my belief now.
Are there solutions out there for me?  I do have 2 months left on my warranty, but I hope to keep mailing my notebook in for support as a last resort.
    thank you,
    steve

If you are ready to reinstall Windows, try this method:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/My-X220t-Clean-Install-Method/td-p/6612...
If after that your trackpoint/touchpad still don't work, I think one of them (or both) is defective.

  • My Macbook Pro running slow even after format

Hello guys, I've had this problem with my 2009 unibody 13" Macbook Pro for at least a month. Last month I tried to reinstall OSX Lion which i previously had, but the install failed for saveral attemps (probably for my slow internet). I finally managed to get OSX Lion on and it was increadibly slow even no programs are installed so I reinstalled it again and again but the same problem still comes up. So i went to an Apple Store (Thailand) and the apple guy assisted me by trying harddisk permission repair, reinstalling the os again, none worked, i still get a super slow computer. So I went home and downgraded the os to snow leopard, it seemed to work just fine at first but after i install several (4-5) basic applications, it started to get slow again (still faster than when it was lion). Whenever i open two or three applications at once or even browsing a webpage alone i get the spinning rainbow cursor. Somebody told me its probably the harddrive, who do u think? please help - thanks.

Yes it is your hard drive.
Backup your files off the machine and before you reinstall OS X again, this time use the 10.6 disk > Disk Utility > Erase with Security Option > Zero All Data, make sure your ENTIRE hard drive is slected on the left.
Let that complete and install 10.6, then update to 10.6.8, that should be the fastest OS X version for that machine.
If you go to 10.7, it's going to slow down a little bit again.
If you can't complete the Zero erase (it takes some time to finish) after trying 2x and or still having problems after that, then the drive is causing the defective sectors and needs to be replaced.
Keep your boot drive below 50% filled for maximum performance, but never more than 80% filled.

  • Satellite 1410 - slow even after formating

My computer became really slow (I cannot watch videos), so I thought I had a virus and I scanned my pc.
He found a virus called "fast.exe", I deleted this file but I still had some problems, so I decided to format the pc using the recovery disks but my pc is still slow.
Does the formating made by the recovery disks delete everything or just crush the system ?
Some people adviced me to make a low level formating but I don't know how to do it and I have always thought it was quite dangerous.
    What should I do ?

    Hi,
As far as I know if you reinstall your OS with Recovery CD, there is no low level formatting. All your data will be deleted. Every time before you want to reinstall OS back-up your data. If you have second partition you can save it there.
Dont worry. Install your OS again. Also try to install SP2 to be sure that your Notebook is up to date.
Lot of factors can be responsible when your Notebook works slowly. You can also disable all processes that you do not need. You can find them in System Configuration Utility (Start>Run>enter msconfig and OK). Under Startup you can disable all programs that you do not need.
I have also bad experience with speed of my machine. After installation of Antivirus Software, my Notebook was very slowly. Without this Software machine was fast again.
Back-up your data and try to find out what is problem with your Satellite.
    Bye

  • MacBook Pro won't reboot.  Get spinning circle even after hard drive replaced at Apple Store

MacBook Pro won't reboot.  Have to reinstall OSX each time I shut down in order to get it to start up.  What could be wrong?  I had the hard drive replaced already.

You shouldn't be using the disc at all. I thought I had made that clear. Boot from your recovery partition and run Disc Utility. If you get the same result -- the internal drive can't be repaired -- then you should consider replacing it. No storage device can be trusted, in my opinion, after throwing an error like that. But whether you choose to replace it or erase it, you have to get the data out first.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Imac hangs with apple logo and spinning wheel when warm

My imac seems to run just fine while it's up. However, after it's been on for a while and I reboot it (like when installing an update) it will get to a gray screen with the apple logo and a spinning wheel. After it has had time to sit awhile ( about 1/2 hour) it will start up just fine and run great until I have to do another reboot.
It will not even boot into safe mode until it cools down. I have reset the NVRAM, run the diagnostics on the hard drive (which showed no errors), swapped out the keyboard, disconnected evrything ( even tried without the keyboard), swapped memory and as a last resort wiped the disk and reinstalled the OS. None of this has helped.
At this point I am thinking that it is either a bad power supply or logic board. Is there a way to fully test each of these to determine which one is causing the problem. I do not have an extra of either that I can swap in temporarly to try and I do not want to spend the money buying something that I may not need. Neither one of those items are cheap.
Can anyone tell me how I can isolate which one it is? Is there a good program I can use to tell me this?
Any help and information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Ray C

Apple is pretty specific about trouble shooting this, please carefully read and then methodically follow all the steps in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Good luck, however I think you have a hardware issue that will require your taking it into an Apple Store or AASP to be professionaly diagnosed.

  • My macbook air (2 years old) runs very slow with "spinning wheel" operating very often

When I start up as well as operate my outlook for mac, the spinning wheel labors after startup and to search for various things.  Is there a way to clean up the air to allow for faster operation.  I have gone into History and cleared previous search sites, but this does not solve the problem.  Thanks

Some people say that repairing disk permissions makes things better. In my experience I've noticed no difference after doing it, but just in case here is a detailed tutorial on how to do it:

  • IMac starts in the background but all I see is a stalled spinning wheel

    Hi All,
I'm hoping you can help me track down the problem with my Intel iMac (running Snow Leopard).
Basically, when I try to start it up, the spinning wheel freezes after a few seconds AND then I hear the sound of Skype starting up in the background. However, I don't see anything except for the gray screen with the stalled spinning wheel and the Apple logo.
It looks like the OS has started running in the background, however, it's not showing it on screen.
I've tried to reinstall the OS, run it in Safe Mode, reset PRAM, HOWEVER, nothing works - i never get passed the gray screen and the stalled spinning wheel.
Someone mentioned this might be due to corrupted/dead RAM chips...
    Hope you can help me!
    Thank you!!!
    e

If you think there may be a hardware problem, run the Apple hardware test. Choose the extended test when prompted. You'll need your original OS X disks, and the test will take awhile to complete.
You may have seen this Apple note on a gray screen at startup, as you've done some of the steps.

  • White screen, apple logo and spinning wheel on startup

I Have a MacBook Pro mid-2012 and suddenly it froze, so I tried shutting it down, but when I turned it on there was this grey screen at first with the apple logo and a spinning wheel. After a few times I shut it down and turned it on, the screen turned white, but the apple logo and the spinning wheel remained. I tried Safe Boot, reseting the NVRAM/PRAM and Internet Recovery.  None of them worked. On internet recovery, the bar is stuck at the beginning and after an hour there is an error that says apple.com/support -5010f. Why is there an error on Internet Recovery and what can I do to fix my MacBook?

I hope you have a backup (preferably a bootable one).
Here’s a reference, read this first: Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
You don’t mention booting to your recovery partition, you can try that.
There is also single user mode:  (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If you have a bootable backup (like a clone that you made with Carbon Copy Cloner) you could try to boot from that and then use it to either
    repair your usual boot drive
erase your usual boot drive and restore from the backup
If you have a bootable installer (like a thumb drive that you made with Diskmaker X (DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) then you could boot from that and see if you can repair your HD or erase and reinstall.
If you have a third party utility like Techtool Pro (Techtool Pro 7) that is on another partition of your drive or on a separate disk you could try to boot from that and see if you can repair your HD.
If none of that works then maybe your HD has a mechanical failure and needs to be replaced.

  • Find my mac after format

    Hi,
Need to know whether "find my mac" after format works or not. I read it should not work, but in our office environment a user who already used that laptop is able to erase the laptop, even after format. Is that possible ? Is yes, how to restrict that.
How to stop a laptop being erased by old employee after that laptop is given another employee ?
    Regards,
    Kamal

Links to the information I have already read, that is not useful for me.
You did not mention this in your original post.  Otherwise, I would not have posted the links.  As far as I know, none of the users here are mind readers.
A recommendation to “not post the serial number” that the thefts already have, I don’t know if this is useful or not because I get no information explaining why is bad to share a serial number.
Due to security reason, it is not wise to post serial numbers or any other personal information on a public message board.
A request to correct my system info, there is something called common sense; I have a brand new MacBook Pro Retina Display, tell me, do you think that it could have OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion?
Correct profile information will proved possible correct troubleshooting suggestions and solutions.

Your stolen Mac is still under warranty.  Call Apple Care.
You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
You still have the standard one year Apple warranty.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.
