Spinning wheel, iMac, EtreCheck, AdAware, disk errors
I have been using Macs at home, PCs at work, for decades, but am not a techie. I am currently having a problem with my home iMac (bought in 2011). About 2 weeks ago I began to notice that I was getting the spinning colored wheel on occasion. I use Office for Macs and about a month ago started using a budgeting software called YNAB, everything else pretty standard, I think. Today the spinning wheel has gotten dramatically worse -- it happens with just about every click, on every application, lasting maybe 20 - 90 seconds and then the machine executes the command(s). I checked multiple user forums including this one. I checked the activity monitor and didn't see anything obviously wrong (nothing running > ~ 15% of CPU; when getting the spinning wheel the current application shows up in the monitor as "not responding,") but I am not sure what else to look for. I downloaded and ran EtreCheck after seeing it on multiple posts here. The report follows. The stuff in red looks suspicious but before I go any farther I thought I'd check with the big guns. Suggestions welcome, many thanks.

Help need my mac pro for school..it has Grey screen..spinning wheel...
I think I have mountain lion OS X....I have done I think almost every suggestion I've seen in discussion boards.
Boot in recovery repaired disk...ok...repair disk permission...all repaired but one warning...I've tried to reinstall lion (without losing data) and it Got all the way to one minute to be done and then the time change back two hours and kept doing this all night long. I haven't done a back up due to no external for time machine.
I hope someone can please help me I've been going crazy for a week now trying to figure this out. I use my computer for school and I'm currently very behind from in my school work thank you
Also I've checked my available space 424.91 free of 750 gigs....disk is verifiedWelcome to the Apple Support Communities
Try holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. Then, after starting in safe mode, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Library/StartupItems. Then, empty this folder and restart the Mac.
If your Mac starts after doing this, it was a problem with a third-party app that starts automatically when you turn on the computer. It won't start automatically anymore after doing that -
IMac keeps freezing, disk error?
While using my iMac G5, it keeps freezing for minutes at a time before letting me carry on. After each of these freezes, I see the following if I type dmesg in the terminal:
disk0s3: I/O timeout.
disk0s3: I/O timeout.
disk0s3: I/O timeout.
disk0s3: I/O timeout.
disk0s3: I/O timeout.
disk0s3: I/O error.
I've phoned support and used the online support several times, and they always insist I fix permissions, re-install the operating system, always to no avail. Any other ideas what might be wrong?
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)I have. It comes back clean on both permission and disk verify. I've also, at Apple's suggestion, reinstalled the operating system, both with and without a full disk erase. Nothing they have suggested helps.

Problems upgrading to Panther on imac getting startup disk error -2
Hello all, I recently got a used imac(400Mhz, CD, 10gb hdd, firewire, OS9.1) but unable to install Panther. It keeps giving me an error that Startup could not start from CD(-2). I've searched Apple support and Google but haven't found any good answers. I've made sure that firmware 4.1.9 is installed. Thanks in advance for any help.
Can you boot any other Mac from that CD?

Issue with Apple TV stopping have way through a movie purchased from iTunes. Says "unexpected error occurred" and will allow us to go back and view earlier parts of the movie but not to go forward from this point. Any suggestions?
Having a very similar problem here. Apple TV Rental movie 2/3 way through. Great movie, though we had major download speed probs initially. Trouble is it now keeps on saying "unexpected error, try again later" or somesuch, and has done for several hours. Rental period finishes tomorrow when we'll all be at work. Night-time here in Australia. Thought we might be able to finish it on my Mac at least. Nup. Can't play AppleTV rentals on your Mac! Family not happy! No, that is understating it. Family ^*&^ing furious. "Why did you waste money on that thing when we could have got it out on DVD, or Netflicks, or Easyflicks, or just pirated it, or.....". I guess you get the picture!

10.5.3 update on Mac Pro stuck on spinning wheel
Greetings,
Updated 10.5.3 yesterday on the Mac Pro, update failed, had to restart, restart is stuck on gray screen with spinning wheel. Did verify disk permission, repair disk permissions, reboot no luck, still the spinning wheel appears. Cannot boot in safe mode.
Any suggestions on what do do other than archive and reinstall?
Thanks for any suggestions!Did verify disk permission, repair disk permissions
Steffi, since you can not boot I will assume you did this from your install DVD under Disk Utility. Go back again and this time run the Disk Repair, if there are any error (red) message run the Repair again. Then check the SMART Status at the bottom of the window, it should say "Verified". Quit DU, reboot, then download the 10.5.3 Combo Update from the Apple site and try it again this time without any peripheral attached.

Hi guys,
since yesterday my Intel-Based iMac doesn't boot normally, its stuck in grey screen with a spinning wheel.
Its an Intel-based iMac 21.5'' purchased in 2011, and i recently (2 months ago) upgraded it to Mavericks.
-2 weeks ago, i installed smcFanControl app
-Tried start up in Safe Mode by holding Shift but its not working. i think i hear fans are working more than they were before the problem occurs.
-entered Single User Mode and i get an error
SMC ::smcReadKeyAction ERROR THOP kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff8029fa1000
-followed some instructions found online, but can execute the correct commands in SingleUserMode
tried to remove FanControl as explained here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/110667/errorr-kernel-smcsmcreadkeyactio n-in-console
any ideas what may caused this and how can i fix this?
Thanks in advanceTake each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, boot from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 10
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 11
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 12
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. -
I'm running OSX 10.9.1 (13B42)
My problem is that occasionally my Mac wont boot properly. It gets to the background picture where the dock should open but it freezes there. The little apple shows up top left but nothing else and the cursor shows as the little spinning wheel that wont do anything. I can't click on the apple to restart, I have to switch off in back and then start up again. It usally boots all the way after that but I'm worried there's something up since this seems to be happeneing more frequently. Also I'm worried that having to manually shut down like that will somehow damage the software in time?
I tried a disk verify but there were no repairs needed. I repaired disk permissions too just in case but it still seems to happen every once in a while.
I've noticed recently that it happens the next reboot after I've been streaming movies online if that helps. Is there any reason for this and anything i can do to stop it in the future? Thanks Paul, just ran the etrecheck you recommended and got this:

IMac Early 2008 - Spinning Wheel constantly also in Safe Mode
Hello Apple Support community!
Recently I've been having much trouble with my iMac Early 2008. In the last 5 years I have never had an issue with it until about 4 days ago and I have no idea how this problem came about.
I have 10.8.5 installed and know a bit about OS X.
Problem Description: On a recent Dropbox sync where there appeared to be a folder conflict the computer hung and was unresponsive. I had to hard shut down by using the power button. Every successive boot (and attempt for DB to sync) ended in a hang and the spinning wheel. I booted into Safemode, disabled Dropbox as a startup item, rebooted and everything worked for a few hours. Because I needed files from DB i decided to download the update and install. This added DB to the startup items again and history repeated itself. Spinning wheel on startup and a hard shut down again. This time safe mode couldn't save me. I was also getting the spinning wheel there too. I left it for a few days until today when I finally hads the time to troubleshoot.
From my iPad I unlinked the iMac from dropbox and booted it from the install disk to perform a hardward test. The standard test showed no errors so I rebooted. I immediately wanted to do a time machine backup and after 6GB were transferred, Time Machine stalled. The spinning wheel was back and I had to hard reset. So I started in safe mode and waited for Time Machine to do its thing. It began cleaning up and then managed only about 140MB before hanging.
Next I started the iMac in Firewire target disk mode and tried to transfer the files to my 15" Powerbook (OS 10.4.11) After only 700MB the Firewire logo on the iMac screen stopped moving and the file transfer stalled. I did a hard shut down again.
This time I ran OS 10.5.4 from the install disk and opened disk utility > verify disk to check for errors. None were found so I rebooted into SAFE MODE and wanted to run terminal to clear dyld cache. Since Finder is unusually sluggish and it seems any mouse-clicking causes the spinning wheel, I waited a bit and then hit command-space to bring up Spotlight into order to launch Terminal. There the iMac hung yet again, but quite strange is that the spotlight search window came up with the description about indexing taking a long time etc etc. I only know that the first time an HD has to be indexed and since this computer is quite old I find that curious.
A.t.m. I am running the extended hardware test from install disk and looking for suggestions about how I can reliably get my data off the HD in order to do a clean install, if I have to. Alternative suggestions to avoid that would be welcome, but I understand that this may be the only solution, if not also having to buy and install a new HD first.
thanks for your help in advance.
best regards,
DanAHT extended version reports the following error
4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0)
Google results show only people with SSD drives reporting that. Cause could be a loose cable??
two weeks ago I moved and had to pack the iMac in the original box. However I transported this myself and not the movers. -
IMac G5 failed 10.5 update - won't boot now, spinning wheel
Please help, I bought my mom an iPad because she broke both ankles and is gonna be bed ridden for several weeks, and needed some way to get email, etc.
She has an iMac g5 2ghz non iSight. The iPad needs to be plugged into iTunes to work the first time, but her iMac had 10.4 on it. Well, iTunes requires 10.5 or higher. So i upgraded it and somewhere in the middle the update failed (I suspect a bad DVD). The computer wanted to restart, and since then, it will not boot, just a gray screen with apple logo, and the forever spinning wheel of frustration. I ran through the 10.5 installer again (this time using a different disk and it seemed to complete, and when it restarted at the end, same thing - spinning wheel, not happy.
So I boot off the OS x install DVD, run disk utilities, repair disk finds no errors, repair permissions says one minute remaining but never finishes, it ran all night long and I finally just gave up and turned it off this morning.
I have come to the conclusion that I will be formatting the HD tonight after work. But I need to get all her pictures, emails, and contact list off that drive first. I figure I'll use my old G4 (10.4 I think?) and put her iMac into target disk mode, and hopefully mount the drive to the G4 with the FireWire cable (I pray this works otherwise... Cry)
My main question, please help me out in locating her address book / contact list. She uses the Mac mail app for email. What files and/or folders do I need to copy so that once I format, I can (hopefully) just copy those folders back to the freshly installed OS 10.5, and theoretically make it seem like nothing happened.
Also, any suggestions anyone can offer me that don't involve formatting would be appreciated... But mostly, just need to figure what I need to backup.
Thanks so much, it's been a very difficult few days, and the added stress of this computer is just no good for the entire situation.Copy her User (home) folder and Applications folder and you should have everything she needs.

Hi Everyone,
I tried to use my Imac G4 1.25Ghz today, after it had been stored for about a year.
It will only show the gray screen with the apple logo, but with no "spinning wheel"
I have tried "Command-Shift-P-R" immediately after pressing the power button, but nothing changes.
Searching on line leads me to believe it could be the internal battery. Is this likely?
If so, are all "half AA" Lithium batteries suitable? I have found the info for changing it on line, but would like some confirmation as to how to replace it.
If not, what else can I try? Please explain in laymans language if possible as I'm not a techy! (but have a friend who can help me if needed)
I can't remember what version of OSX it is running, other than it is Panther.
The install/restore discs say 10.3.2 (but I thought it was more recent).
Cheers
TimAlthough a dead internal backup battery could be the cause, you might first try reinstalling OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Imac intel won't restart, I get gray screen and spinning wheel then shut off
My imac intel only restart after running disk utility, otherwise I get a gray screen with apple logo and spinning wheel then after about 2min it shuts off. this all started after a power outage. I have tried everything that I have read online to fix this, it seems doing a clean install is last resort. Does anyone have any other options for me?

I have tried disconnecting the periperals, restarting in "safe boot", resetting the pram and I tried starting up in single user mode. It will only start up if I start up from the original gray 10.4 start up disk and run "repair disk"....I get errors including "The underlying task reported failure on exit". I then eject the disk and restart and it works fine but if I have to shut down or restart for any reason it's back to the gray screen.
Your system profile confirms you are using OS 10.5.8. Boot up from your OS 10.5.x install dvd. Use the "repair disk" setting. If you get the same error, then run Apple Hardware Test from your original system dvd. -
Imac hangs with apple logo and spinning wheel when warm
My imac seems to run just fine while it's up. However, after it's been on for a while and I reboot it (like when installing an update) it will get to a gray screen with the apple logo and a spinning wheel. After it has had time to sit awhile ( about 1/2 hour) it will start up just fine and run great until I have to do another reboot.
It will not even boot into safe mode until it cools down. I have reset the NVRAM, run the diagnostics on the hard drive (which showed no errors), swapped out the keyboard, disconnected evrything ( even tried without the keyboard), swapped memory and as a last resort wiped the disk and reinstalled the OS. None of this has helped.
At this point I am thinking that it is either a bad power supply or logic board. Is there a way to fully test each of these to determine which one is causing the problem. I do not have an extra of either that I can swap in temporarly to try and I do not want to spend the money buying something that I may not need. Neither one of those items are cheap.
Can anyone tell me how I can isolate which one it is? Is there a good program I can use to tell me this?
Any help and information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Ray CApple is pretty specific about trouble shooting this, please carefully read and then methodically follow all the steps in the following article:

Good luck, however I think you have a hardware issue that will require your taking it into an Apple Store or AASP to be professionaly diagnosed. -
My iMac locks up constantly in email. I click on one or two emails. Then when I click on another email, I get the spinning wheel and have to relaunch. Why does it get confused and lock up? Seems like it is stuck.
10.6.8 here, MacBook Pro. Comcast. Mail freeze ups. Occasional warnings to use "Log Out" under the Apple icon.
Disk Repair run several times. Shows lots of Java "remote" issues.
I run Disk Repair several times, shows a lot of Java, "remote" issues.
Restart don't know if it helps, I do it all the time. What's with quitting Mail but it doesn't quit, and why a separate maneuver to "Log Out".

IMac Freezes - spinning wheel - Heroku????
I'm having a couple of issues with my iMac desktop.
After it sits idle for a while it freezes. At first the mouse doesn't respond at all. Then, if I can get it moving, I get the spinning wheel that won't go away. I have to end up turning it off, then back on for it to work. I've had the computer for over 3 years and this just started happening about 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday I got an error message when using Safari -- "Heroku -- No app found". I have no idea what this means. Has something hijacked my computer? Strangely, I've been getting the same error message on my iPad lately! Could it have something to do with iCloud sharing information on both? Sorry for the broad questions, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Mac's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! From your description, it seems very likely that the machine is overheating.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
