Split albums...

Hi,
I have an ipod classic with 8000+ songs on it.
When I search under 'albums', I find that some albums have been split into 2 with most songs listed in one album and then one or two songs then listed under a second heading of the same album.
The album title and artist are all exactly the same - the only difference I can see is that when I look at the track numbers on the info, itunes appears to list the songs out of order i.e - track 5 and 7 will appear at the top then the rest of the album will appear in order...it is the tracks that appear out of sequence that seem to be creating 2nd albums of the same title...any ideas on how to rectify this ?
Thanks

*HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
*Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
*One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
*One album, too many covers*
Sadly the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums which causes problems when some tracks list guest artists. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate this is not part of the actual song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
*One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
*One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • ITunes sometimes splits albums

This is an annoyance: iTunes seems to like to split albums - sometimes it makes a separate album for each track! It doesn't like the idea of trying to consolidate all the tracks into one album by dragging and dropping. The multiple copies of the albums all have the same name, as near as I can tell. This is for CDs I've ripped - also for albums I've made from cassette tapes using sound editing software.
I'm new to iTunes - just got an iPhone so I'm trying to like it. Mostly I used Windows Media Player before - seems much more forgiving and intuitive than iTunes, which strikes me as quirky and brittle.
    Anyone have suggestions? TIA...

nsimp08, Right-click > Get Info on all the songs. Look at these 3 fields, and if any of them are blank, then they are different from each other and that's why they are showing up as multiple albums.
    Album
    Artist
    Album Artist
It's OK if Artist is blank if it's one of those that has a guest artist on a track, but then the Album Artist MUST be filled in.
And sometimes, checking compilation = YES then saving, then checking compilation NO then saving, will fix it. Toggling compilation ON & OFF, in other words.

  • ITunes was splitting albums...workaround

I found that iTunes splits albums because the id tags may be slightly different for songs in an album. If you are like me I spent hours trying to make the tags identical within iTunes and to no avail. Here is the workaround that i found. Edit the tags in Foobar2000 and then reimport the album back into itunes. works perfectly for me. Too bad Apple have dropped the ball with regard to tag editing in iTunes.

    hi
i had this trouble when i switched to apple from pc.  As all my cd s were already ripped to media player i tried to just transfer the file or folder and all the 'various artists'  albums got split. I had to delete them all and rip the guilty folders direct from the cd again with my mac this cured it !
Your problem sounded a little like mine with some all split and others sorted - it was always the folders that i added that acted like this never a direct cd rip.
if for any reason you don t have the cd any more either make sure in the 'get info' option the 'album artist' reads the same for each track and that will batch them together.
    hope this is of help

  • How to fix split albums?

Lots of my albums in iTunes end up split. For instance, 8 songs will be listed in one album, the other two in their own individual albums.
I've done the fixes that I normally see:
    - choose PART OF A COMPILATION, save.
    - rename album name for all, save
    - make sure sort-by options are all the same (or uncheck them)
None of these issues seem to fix it. Most of the fixes I see are for iTunes 7 and 8. Are there any new fixes out there nowadays?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • Upload splits albums

I recently recieved and iPad so am now uploading my CD collection to iTunes (Windows 7 version).  I will then load some of the music into my iPad.
When I upload some music the single album appears as multiple albums in iTunes and the tracks are split between the slbums in a random fashion (e.g.Handels Messiah disc 1 is uploaded as four albums with trackes 1,7,12 in one album, 3,8,14 in another etc).
    Can I avoid this?
If not can I re-combine in iTunes into a single album and shuffle into the right order so it loads to iPad as a single album and plays straight through when I add the album to a playlist?

See Grouping tracks into albums. Usually there is some kind of inconsistency which needs to be eliminated.

  • 'Cover flow 'display splits albums

When I view my albums in 'grid' format all are shown individually & correctly, but when I switch to 'cover flow' the albums split showing many covers of the same album each carrying a track from that album.
Is this a 'bug' or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks cynic and DucMike, but that wouldn't explain why the display in 'cover flow & 'grid' are different in terms of slitting albums.
BUT!! Cynic, I think you may have hit on something here and a confession I have to make.
I tag all my albums as follows:- The artist in 'Album' tag and the name of the track or album in the tag 'Album artist'!
Why? Because this way I get the name of the artist displayed above the track/ album which is the way I want to view them. It wuld seem though that produces the splitting effect I refer to.
For example The Beatles Abbey Road. In grid format, one album cover displayed. In cover flow, about a dozen covers scattered around.
I will try to re-tag this album and see if this changes the display in cover flow. Suspect it may do!
    Thanks again cynic.
If anyone knows how to get the artist displayed above the album title and still enter the correct info' in the correct tags then please help!

  • TS1468 Albums split & Album Names Disappear

I'm sorry, but not only did songs from the same album now get split but all my CD imported album names disappeared and therefore my album art is missing! I know how to fix it, the question is why should I have to fix it in the first place? I have 1000's of songs from CD's, so fixing this for every album problem I have will take days!!! What's up Apple?!? Why do you always break what don't need fixin'?!?

Not sure what Apple means by "compilation," but just checking that with a grouped selection doesn't necessarily combine them into an album (for me). The artist seems to be a factor, too. I have several collections of tunes from the same CD (or two CDs together) that have different artists and are not recognized as the same album even when "Compilation" is checked for the selected group. Other similar CDs I've imported do become one album (naturally). Apparently, iTunes uses some additional factor to identify the members of an album, and I don't know what this is . . . yet. Examples of where I'm having problems are with "samplers."

  • ItUnes spontaneously splits albums when renaming

I renamed a couple of albums with a new band name, just to tidy up. But iTunes has spontaneously split each album between track-1 and track-2 to track-n, so now I have an entry of an album with only track one, and an entry of that same album with track 2 to track-n. How did this happen? More importantly: How can I correct it? I am certain that both entries have the exact info in artist name and album name (because I use copy paste, and unless a mac behaves like a windows PC, it should always paste the same thing in...)
    Any suggestions?

Just found a solution: It's dumb and definitely a bug in iTunes: rename one entry to a different name, say "x" and press enter. Then change the name back to the name it should be. This time iTunes merges the album as it should.
STupid isn't it? I hope iTunes is gonna fix this...

  • Split Albums - NOTHING works!

I have albums that have been split up into separate albums.  I have done EVERYTHING!
I have set the album artist
I have set the album title
    I have set the grouping
I have set the track numbering
I have set the sort album artist
I have set the sort album title
I have checked the "Part of compilation" box
NOTHING works, iTunes insists on displaying them as separate albums.  Sooooo frustrating! Why is something so simple and basic so difficult?!  If every album title is entered exactly the same, and all other information is correct, why is iTunes just totally incapable of recognising that the tracks are all part of the same album.
And why isn't there just an option in a right-click menu that just says "Combine albums" so you don't have to faff around with all the resetting of album titles and stuff in the first place?!

    IheartMacs
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to whereever that Library is (usually in your Pictures Folder)
If iPhoto sees a valid library there it will open it.
If it doesn't, then you've got a damaged database file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards

  • Itunes splitting albums!

Ill try 2 describe this problem as good as i can.. When i drag a music album/map into Itunes, it somtimes spilit the album into more albums.. I found that this was becores one ore more of the songs diddent have album information.. So I kind of solved that annoing thing.. But the problem i have now is that Itunes somtimes(I havent got a clue why) splits the albums that i have in Itunes into many albums.. often one album for every song!! So insted of having one album with all the, lets say 13 songs on it I now have 13 albums with one song on each.. This is driving me nuts Hope someone can explane me whats going on..

Actually I dont think its whats in the tag thats the problem. I checked, and its exactly the same information on all the songs.. And still suddently (for ex when adding a new album.. many of the albums already in Itunes are split up the way decribet....
Another problem I have is that the numbers on the albums(Those that are not part of the splitt problem) not always are in the right number ... ex not 1,2,3,4,5... but 6,2,12,1... Whats up with that?

  • Split Album Covers

All the album covers synced okay except for two albums. Both were separated into two albums with the same name but the info (name, album, album artist, etc.) are the same. I have already tried clearing all the music and re-syncing it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

NVM, I figured out the problem. The album names had an extra space to it.

  • Import is Splitting Albums into Multiple Albums?

For instance, Abbey Road is broken up into two albums. Songs are not duplicated, but are separated onto two albums. I have an album called Southern Sampler 2000 and each and every song has it's own album. Ditto for my Time/Life Rock n' Roll albums.
The one thing that they have in common is that iTunes couldn't find album art for each. I do have albums for which album art is not available that were correctly put into one album.
These albums consist of CDs that I own and had previously ripped to mp3's. They are all under one folder. The structure of the folders was E:\My Music\Artist\Album Name\ and all the mp3's for the album are in the Album Name folder.
I'd be interested in knowing why I'm not getting album art for many albums. Most of which are by major artists and not obscure released. I appreciate your assistance.
    BTW this is iTunes 9.1.0.79.

It's really nice of you to offer to help.
    A. Only 5 albums out of 100 or so have this problem.
    B. They're all albums I ripped from CDs.
    C. Yes, the "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library" box is checked.
What's even stranger about all this is that three of those five albums were fine this morning until I changed the spelling of the artist's name by way of a group change (selecting all the tracks in an album and changing a letter from lower case to upper).
Any advice you can give me would be very helpful (and enlightening). Otherwise, I may just try to delete the albums and import them again.

  • In the music library how can I split albums that have grown too big?

I have an album of 70 podcasts and there is not enough space on the page to display all the info of the title of the podcast particularly the date. I want to divide these titles among 4 or 5 subalbums to allow more space for display

The solutions is either of the following:
Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
Copy the photos back into the exact same folder and folder location that they were in before
I don't know what you actually did "when I pasted it back" ... but the bigger issue is that you shouldn't be working with these files in your operating system, period. Once you import them into Lightroom, you don't manage these files in your operating system.
