Split clip with iMovie 09

Importing from a Mini DV Camera,I would like to split my mowie in different event, for instance one for each day. After selecting a part of a clip in my event browser I go in < Menu File <Split clip. But this selection is not active. How to do ?

You need to Delete a single frame, and then trash rejected clips. Note that this will turn .dv files into .mov files, and there will be some quality loss. Use mpegstreamclip (see other postings in this forum) to maintain quality by converting interlaced video to progressive.

  • Emailing half of a split clip in iMovie

I recorded a video about 8 minutes long. I need to send the video as an attachment to my professor, but it says the file is too large; even being compressed. I learned how to split the clip in half, but now I can't figure out how to send each half separately. Anyone know how to do this?

Yes, I realize I can do that, but I really honestly want to use iMovie the way I think it was meant to be used, and if I'm passing off a partially resolved (transcoded) movie, and I want to take it through another editing revision, I have to re-garage band it too. Seems like a bad workflow.
Funny thing, I think there might be a bug. I just did the exact same thing (split a clip, and adjusted the audio on 1/2 of the clip) and it works fine in another iMovie08 project. The clip is clearly "split" (e.g. it has round corners on one side and flat corners on another), both parts of the split are next to each other. The only difference between the projects is that one is using background music, and the other is using pinned music (music starts 5 minutes into the project, so I use pinned music for background music throughout). I suspect there's an interaction there.
Again, thanks for the Garage Band workaround.

  • Splitting Video with iMovie

I've had iMovie on my iPhone 4 forever and I just decided to try using it, but I'm really struggling with it.  I've figured out how to split videos, but what I'm having trouble with is saving these split videos as individual videos.   What I'm asking is, once a video has been split multiple times, does the app have the ability to save each portion of the split video as a different movie?  If so, how?

  • When replacing a split clip with a photo...

I can't figure out how to make it the exact same time.  I click replace clip and it does.... But for a second shorter and then the audio gets out of sync.  I know there has to be a way.  I want photographs to act as a B-Roll and all I'm getting is angry.  This is the most annoying problem to have! Someone help me please!

Just for reference, I change the times on the clips, and it then changes them to a different time.  Like 3.6 becomes 3.4.  4.6 becomes 4.

  • Serious Issues with iMovie 08

I just installed iMovie and imported an HD movie tonight from my Sony HDR-HC3 camera and am not having much success...
The import started fine, but then after it completed I hit Done and it didn't show up anywhere...had to close and then reopen iMovie before the imported event finally showed up...then iMovie is stuck with a spinning beach ball for hours...the video clip is only 20 minutes long. I imported in 'Large' mode...920x540.
Any ideas? I rebooted, restarted iMovie several times...(had to kill it).
it is now in an infinite hanging state...never loads up and won't let me click on anything...
I reimported the clip with iMovie 06 and am in business using that, but would really like to be able to use 08...any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

How do I get iMovie to see a picture added to iPhoto?
The basic answer is to get them "thumbnailed" for previewing in the "Photo Browser." Unfortunately, there is no obvious switch or button to force a "refresh" of your content. It happened to me early on and I believe I simply created a separate album in iPhoto and moved/copied the "unseen" photos from their main Event or Photo area to the newly created album. This seemed to force them to be seen in iMovie '08 but that was several "upgrades" ago. It may or may not still work for you. On the other hand, you can manually drag and drop the photos from the Finder desktop, folder, or iPhoto application directly to your iMovie '08 project if you wish.

iMovie '08 is basically a non-destructive, by-reference editor. It is not necessary to physically split or delete portions of your files. The "Split" Edit option is only available when an event clips is placed in the project window. Easiest way to delete a selection from within a clip would be to
    1) Move the clip to the Project window
    2) Select/highlight the frame segment to be removed
    3) Use the "cut" or "delete select" option (or "split clip) and delete key) to remove the unwanted content from your project

  • How do I split a clip in iMovie 09?

When I'm in a clip within an event, there is no option to SPLIT CLIP if I right click, and CMD-Shift-S does nothing.
What am I missing? I have imported clips that imported as one long clip, so I need to split up the clip and then split up the event.

No need to use Toast. Just find the EyeTV file in the finder (right-click/reveal in Finder).
Then, right-click on Finder file and select "Show Package Contents".
Drag the .mpg file into MPEG Streamclip
From Streamclip, I usually export as Apple Intermediate Codec. It is slightly smaller than a DV file, and iMovie seems to work better with AIC than DV. But DV is OK too if you prefer DV.
Note: I usually deinterlace as I export from Streamclip into AIC.
Also, in MPEG Streamclip, when you export the clip, give it a name like clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext (where ext is the extension such as MOV or DV or MP4 - streamclip should apply the extension automatically based on your export codec.)
iMovie will automatically place it in an event in the correct month and year, and the date metadata will work.

  • Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!

Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project in iMovie? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. Whenever I add audio or song it covers the whole project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!

Thank you for your reply Karsten but unfortunately this didn't help me so far. Or maybe I'm missing something?
First the link is a tutorial for iMovie on a Mac. I'm using iMovie on iPad so the steps are inapplicable.
Second it is only possible for me to manipulate the end part of the sound clip to whichever duration I want. But I can't do the same with the 'beginning' of the sound clip.
I simply want to place some photos in the beginning of my video with no sound in the background then after like 2 secs I want to start the music clip. For some reason that is not possible! Cause every time I drop the music clip unto my project timeline it automatically place it self along with the first frame in the project! And consequently the photos and music are forced to start together.
    Hope I'm making sense...

  • HELP!!!! Problems with saving/exporting split clips in Premiere Elements 13

I have Premiere Elements 13.  I have a 2 hr mp4 file I have set up into 8 split clips and want to save each split clip as it's own mp4 file so I can import it into Adobe Presenter as video for each particular slide.  I need very specific steps as how to accurately select each split clip and save it or export it as it's own mp4 file.  I was given instructions that instructed me to add these gray bars around the clip I wanted to save/export but I am unable to identify how to get those gray bars to activate around the clip.  When I save/export it is saving the entire 2 hr mp4 vs the individual clip.

Please do not duplicate thread since it becomes confusing to the person asking the question as well as for those trying to respond.
I have already replied to your latest request for further details on setting the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar.
Please refer to your original thread and continue the discussion there.
Elements 13 - How do you save clips
Again, there are two requirements for selectively exporting a portion of the Timeline content
    a. setting the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar
    and
    b. having a check mark next to the Share Work Area Bar Only option in the export area.
Details are in the original thread (with screenshot).

  • How do you split clips in the event viewer in iMovie '11?

I'm using iMovie '11 and have imported a very long movie (over an hour from VCR Tape) that I want to split into multiple events, however the "Split Clip" option is grayed out. How can I split a large event into smaller events?

I have discovered a round-about way to split large events from comments in this forum, so apologies, and or thanks to other posters.
You can split events by deleting (and discarding) a single frame at the point where you want to split the two clips. It's processor intensive (takes a while to do), but it works.
1.) In the Event Viewer, click to select where you want to split the event.
2.) Drag the yellow handles to make the selection as small as possible (1 frame?). If you drag the thumbnail display slider to the left to show only 1/2 second intervals, it helps when selecting a single frame.
3.) Right click and select "Reject Selection". The clip is now split.
4.) When you've completed all of your clip splitting, select "Show: Rejected Only" at the bottom of the Event Viewer to show all of the rejected frames.
5.) Click on "Move Rejected to Trash". This operation could take a while.
    That should be it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why is a video clip from iphoto not compatible with imovie?

i have a video clip in iphoto and when i try to add it by dragging it into the videos in imovie, it says "the file will not be imported. it is not compatible with imovie". this video clip was taken with my friend's point and shoot type camera, then put on her computer, then put on a flash drive, then put on my computer. thank you so much for any help!

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Some "..point and shoot.." cameras create movies in an iMovie-compatible ".mov" format, but others create .avi files, or they record in the MPEG-1 format which iMovie can't unscramble.
Not all point and shoot movies are compatible with iMovie, even if they play using Apple's QuickTime movie player which iPhoto relies on.
These non-compatible movies need to be converted to .mov format, or some other compatible format such as DV or AIC, before trying to import them into iMovie. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can just open the movie clips and then use 'Export' to save them in the .mov format.
..More details from me - or others - later; I'm dashing out right now for a bite to eat..

  • I have a MacAir with iMovie 10.0 and have lost several Facetime Clips that were imported through iMovie. Can anyone help me find them?

I have been recording through import > Facetime days of painting a seascape.  I have been recording then working with short clips (5-30 minutes) that I then fast forward 200x... This is a big project with hours of video that have been condensed into about 5 minutes. When I went to review the playback, I discovered a missing few days worth of video clips in the middle of the project. the only thing that I did was show the project (just as a playback) to a friend (which I had done before but I had already drug down all the imported clips). I have searched the boards and not found a similar situation. Can anyone help me find them or are they lost forever?

OK.... I just lost another several hours worth of clips.  iMovie "Quit unexpectedly". I believe this is when I lose my imported clips. Are they stored anywhere else?
