Split Events Into Clips

I'm importing DV video into iMovie that is recovered from a reformatted drive, and all of the original camera info like dates and such are gone. The video is intact with sound; however, iMovie cannot tell when the camera goes on and off, and each file is imported into one big clip. Some parts of the video should be separated into separate events, as they are not related, and I cannot find a way to split the event.
Any suggestions? The files are .dv, and I don't really want to resort to Quicktime to separate the video to organize it.

I had the same "one big clip" issue when importing old 8mm/Hi8 via a Sony camcorder last weekend. I couldn't split events because there was only "one" clip to work with. Our local Apple store showed me another way that should work for you, too:
1. Locate where two scenes change using the little red vertical line.
2. Click in that area and shrink the yellow editing frame down to its minimum size (I was able to get it down to 0.1 seconds or about three frames worth).
3. Delete that short piece and the clip should be split there.
After I went through my imports doing that, it was easy to use the "Split events" function to rearrange everything.
Hope this is useful...

It sounds like whatever was put on disc was put on a DVD-R Intenso brand disc.
Probably the tape content was put on that DVD-R disc in DVD-VIDEO format. It gets more complicated if it gets put on the DVD-RAM type disc (which does not seem to be the case).
To verify the format of the material on your DVD disc, put the disc in the burn tray, go to computer, and Open the drive. You should see at least two folders, OpenDVD, VIDEO_TS, and maybe AUDIO_TS. Those folders are indicative of a DVD-VIDEO format.

Now back to Premiere Elements and the Video Importer. The video editor is not going to rip off clips from the DVD-VIDEO format. It is going to rip off VOB video files which contain a fixed number of files before it generates additional of its kind for additional video content.
Once you have the video VOB files (typically starting with VTS_01_1.VOB...spot the larger file size ones), in the Video Importer, you bring them into the project where you split them into clips that you want. You can do that in the Preview Window with the Set In Set Out point.

  • "Import" splits takes into clips and loses footage

When importing footage from both my Sony HDV camcorder (directly) and my Sony DVCAM camcorder (via a Sony DSR-11 deck) to my Mac Mini using firewire cables, FCPX breaks some takes into multiple shorter clips.
Whilst this could just be annoying, it's much worse than that as it loses footage as it does it, at the unwanted clip breaks.
FCP Studio used to give the option of auto splitting imports into clips, FCPX appears not to.
Any ideas for preventing the automatic splitting of takes?
    Thanks.
P.S. Most recently, my one minute of colour bars is now six separate clips!

I don't run iMovie 08, so am not entirely familiar with it's use. I think that you can export each iMovie 08 clip to a new iMovie 08 project, then export that new project (containing one clip) to Quicktime, and from there import into iM6 for editing.

  • "split event before clip" is not available

I have selected a section of my video in event library, however, the "split event before clip" is not available.  Anybody know why?

This command is only available if your Event has more than one clip. It will split the Event between two clips.
If you are not sure how many clips are in your Event, move the Thumbnail slider to the right  until you get a single thumbnail per clip.

  • Split up of events into clips, imported from VHS cassettes

I have been trying to split up events which I imported from different video cassettes, they import in one big clip into one event, but the thing is I need to split up this event into several independant events, I dont seem to be able to find a solution,
    Bye for now, Peter

I am assuming that once you have split up your Event you will create a Project for each of them in order to do your editing  etc.
What you could do is create several Projects from the one Event, thereby achieving, hopefully, the same thing.
    Try this.
From your Event create new Project ie File -- New Project. You could call this Project 1.
At top of screen select iMovie then down to Preferences.Select the Browser tab and click on "Clicking in Events Browser selects entire clip " Close the Imovie Preferences.
Click on your big clip in your Event and a yellow box will surround this whole clip .You should see that the left and right sides of this yellow box have what look like small loops or handles. Click and hold down on the handles and move the sides (left or right ) to the position where you want to start and finish a particular section. You can view these positions on your screen as you move left or right, let go of mouse when in wanted position.
You might want to expand your clip using the slider at bottom right of the Event before doing this to give you more visibility and control.
When you have positioned the left and right handles to your liking, ( covering say the first 20 minutes of your Event ) click in the yellow box, hold down and drag to your project.
Now create a new project---  Project 2  and repeat the above for the next section of your Event, and so on untill you have covered your entire Event.
If you wanted to break up your Event into say 5 sections, you have 1Event but 5 Projects.( Instead of 5 Events and 5 Projects)
Each Project can be edited as you wish.
Moving the handles left and right takes a bit of getting used to at first but you will get the hang of it quite quickly.
Hope this achieves what you were trying to get to.

  • Split event before clip?

    Hi gang,
I finally updated my iMovie library to v10.0.6.  I imported a bunch of video, and realized that it lumped all the different days into one new event.  Not sure where the different days = different events feature went.  In any case, I would like to split this large event that spans about a month worth of video into smaller events.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to find that function.  In previous versions there used to be a "Split Event before Selected Clip" option.  I can't find a similar function in the new iMovie.  Is this feature gone, or has it been replaced by a different workflow?
    Cheers!

    Hi Phil McFarlane,
From what I understand, it sounds like you would like to split your iMovie event. To complete this task, please use the information in the attached link. Please let me know if I have misunderstood your situation.

  • IPhoto splitting events into individual files with long numbers as names?

Okay so technical first.  I am running Mavericks with iPhoto version 9.5.1 on both my MacBook and iMac.  I have had minor problems/irritations with iphoto for awhile but recently upgraded to Mavericks and the problems increase.  I mainly use iPhoto for organization, I like to do any editing in Photoshop.  My problem is that it is splitting most of my events into individual files, so there's one photo in an event, but there will be several pics from that day.  They are given names that are just numbers, like 20120219-153730.  They have the same date, you an see it below the Title which is the numbers.  I checked preferences, it is set to one event per day.  I have no idea what is going on.  There are still some folders though, so I don't know why it is still affecting some of them.  And the Photostreams for the month are still there.  I tried switching to Picasa but the way the Mac (or is it iPhoto?) organizes the files on the actual computer is a pain too.  They've switched from all the files being in a folder named the date they were taken to a numbered folder within another folder, maybe even in another numbered folder.   And there will be one pic in there even if I took 10 that day.  That is where the number on the Events is coming from.  If anyone could help me I would appreciate it.  It is doing this on both of my computers.

    Do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
    Next continue with:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1.

  • Split event before clip is greyed out

I can't split event before a clip and I can't merge because it is greyed out. I am highlighting in the events pane. I am completely updated. I have rebooted. I am using imovie8. I am new to this and thought having a mac was going to be so easy. So far, I have had to troubleshoot just above everything I do before getting ahead. It's getting a little old. Can anyone help?

Oops sorry - I'm new to iMovie, except for a short one I did a couple years back from stills.  I only take the occasional one with my p&s camera - so it's mp4's - but now I've got a project I want to do for my son and his band.  So, another learning curve
Yes I've been trying to split clips in the events browser.  And sometimes the "split event" option come up black, but most times it's greyed out.  Sometimes I even get the black and greyed-out in different places within the same event.  I can't find any logic behind it, it appears to be random.
I haven't come across anything called "the timeline" - so don't know what that is.  I searched it just now in iMovie but nothing came up.

  • Splitting event into its own library

My main iPhoto library is growing to the point where it will barely fit on a DVD.
I'd like to split out the larger of the two events in this library into its own library.
I do have iPhoto Library Manager...
I'd like to know how to do this as I really should get around to making my periodic DVD backups.

Yeah, I did just that - but as for the actual move, I was momentarily stumped until I realized I just had to click and drag the event in question into the new library.
Done and done, now am "starting over" by moving all the pics previously tagged with keywords into new events.
I said it before and I'll say it again - I simply do not know why I was so hesitant to use iPhoto in the first place! It's far better than my old "folder tree" system.
    Thanks for the big hint.

  • Unable to "Split Event before selected clip"

First... I've read the other two threads that I could find by searching these forums and the recommendations there didn't help.
I have several large DV (avi) files that I imported previously from a camera. I imported them (one at a time) into iMovie 08 - each tape/avi file as a separate "event". As you can probably guess, the tapes/event were all imported as a single large clip each. I then split the large clips into separate clips by removing/rejecting a small amount of video between clips that I wanted to separate.
So far so good. Now I have 1 event for each 'tape' still and a bunch of separate clips within each 'event'. Now what I want to do is separate out each of the individual clips into separate events.
I've selected many different clips (the first, the last, several in between...) by right-clicking and selecting "select entire clip" (which it does) but the File>Split Event Before Selected Clip menu item is ALWAYS grayed out and will not let me do it.
    Why?
I imported some new video (AVCHD) from a new canon hf10 and it allowed me to use this functionality just fine.
Is there something about the avi/dv file format that won't allow you to split events into multiple events?
From everything I've read, this appears to be a bug in iMovie 08 as everything seems to point to this supposedly working when doing what I've done here...
    HELP!
    TIA.

Believe the problem is caused by you trying to split a single clip into two events, all work done in imovie is non destructive.
I suspect the easiest workaround would be to split the event clip in QT.

  • How do I transfer video WITHOUT it automatically splitting into clips?

I would like to transfer some home DV movies into digital and put them online, but iMovie keeps splitting them into clips with every cut. I can't figure out how to get the entirety of those movies as a whole without having to re-connect them like a puzzle. Is there any way to do this?

Is there any way to do this?
Are you mixing content? If not, try manual capture. Use the camcorder as if it were a manual video cassette player and iMovie '08 (or a dedicated capture application like Vidi) was a manual recording device.

  • Speedgrade crashes every time I use split into clips function as part of scene detection.

Speedgrade CC (latest version) crashes every time I use split into clips function as part of scene detection.
I can use the keyframe function fine, but if i split it into clips it crashes 9 out of 10 times... so to get the job done i simply keep reopening the project, cliping and praying it works, then it crashes.... and i repeat this until it doesnt crash!
File format im using is a 22min long Prores422 HQ 1080 25P file.
Any ideas?.... im guessing im going to get the old "reinstall the software" one first... anything else?
also have issues with Speedgrade just crashing for no good reason at random times while im grading too but ive come to expect that from the buggy software.

I've got several 1080p mov's that have multiple sequences with 20 to 40 minutes a sequence I've regularly run over to Sg from PrPro. Granted, they're pretty straight forward, mostly simple cuts with a few transitions/wipes, no more than 3 video layers a sequence. Only one has any Ae stuff on it, and again, pretty simple.
But as noted, there are those who do programs for broadcast with it ... I'm wishing one would chime in. Maybe shooternz ... I think he does b-cast work. Vastly more experienced than I am, PrPro, Ae, Sg, Audition ... the "suite". There's several others around here, though they tend to 'hang' in the PrPro forum more than here.

  • Can you turn off optimization while splitting events?

I want to move all my many thousands of iPhoto clips down to intermix with my other clips stored on an external drive. All seemed well, I drug them down like the apple tech told me to, but they appeared in a single event, which is bad enough, and the sound is missing, which also *****, but I've found that if I split the EVENTS back into their original date periods the sound comes back. (And I have to do that anyway so they will sort/intermix properly in the event area anyway which was my original goal.)
The PROBLEM is that every time I choose "split event before clip", it takes a minute or so for imovie to OPTIMIZE MOVIES after splitting the event.  Since I'm really not planning on doing anything other than splitting these **** events for the next month or so, is there any way to turn that feature off for a while?
For that matter is there any way to speed this process up? Any way at all?  All the movies are still in iPhoto, if there was a better way to do it I would.  I would just export them and import them directly, but then I lose all the original dates (Though I'm starting to wonder if that would be faster.)  I would be willing to buy external software if that would help.
And yes, I realize I could just drag them all down event by event, but that would take longer, because I believe I have to first create an event to drag them into. If that is incorrect let me know.  But at least on my computer, creating the event takes just as long as splitting the event, so this method saves me half the time.
It seems like there has got to be a better way to do this.
Or is there any way to split at multiple points?

    Flip the mute switch.

  • Splitting One Large clip in Event Library

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to digital. I found some Christmas' that were taken when I was a kid. This segment was on 11 minute stream of multiple Christmas' together. When I imported the AVI that I received back, it naturally was on long clip. What I would like to do is split these into multiple events (I think I can remember when each year was, getting old you know )
Everything I have read seems that it should work, like:
Place the scan to where I want to split, then press Command-Shift-S, but all I get is a beep.
I select the clip I want to make into one event and tried copying, but no paste. Tried moving, but it wants to move the whole clip.
I tried selecting the next year and do the File | Split Event before Selected Clip, but it is grayed out.
I'm at a loss for what to do, so if anyone knows the "tricks" to do this, please help.
    Larry

I use MPEG Streamclip for this, and it is free. QuickTime Pro also works great.
    Instructions for MPEG Streamclip
    1) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Drag your 11 minute clip into the MPEG Streamclip window.
(If you don't know where it is, right-click on the clip in iMovie and select "Reveal in Finder"
    5) If you want to split a long clip into smaller clips, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 5 and 6 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    6) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    7) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
    8) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    9) Open iMovie.
    10) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 5,6,7. You can import several clips at once if you want.
    11) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.
