Can't get large sound file to work

Hi all,
I just upgraded to LR 3, and now can't get a large MP3 (8MB) to work with my slide show. Is there some new limitation on size? Something I am doing wrong. My plan is to just use a single slide to hitch a 1-hour "radio" show, create an MP4 to upload to youtube. I will embed this on my client's website -- so that I have a streaming thing. Get it?

The sound file is an MP3, and the little alert dealie shows, saying the file is not a valid music file -- even though it worked in LR1. (I just couldn't save the slide show as an MP4, that's why I upgraded.)

How to split large video files into multiple individual clips by date

Hello. I'm looking for a freeware/shareware program (if one exists, or willing to pay for one if it does this well) that will:
1) Analyze a large AVI file identifying the start/start points of each segment of video and the dates the video segments were shot.
2) Then allow me to organize (for example, join 2 or more segments together if it's a video with a lot of start/stop points during the same shot) the segments identified in step 1 into logical clips that could be split apart from the 1 large AVI file.
3) Lastly, it would split my one large AVI file into the multiple clips or files that I identified in step 2.
A piece of software called FootTrack does a great job analyzing AVI files as I describe in steps 1 & 2, but it doesn't allow you to split or export the one avi file into multiple avi files.
I really don't want to have to do this one clip at a time, I've got to believe there's a program out there that will automate this process for me.

I don't know of a way to automate it. I just did about 15 years worth. It wasn't too hard. I use an application called mpegstreamclip. Its very easy and free to download either from the apple site or direct from its site.

Best way to send a large sound file via e-mail?

I created a sound file in Sound Studio that is 75.5 MB large. I want to e-mail it to a friend through my Hotmail account. (I have a cable connection. I do not have AOL. And I just discovered that I can play it on my computer using QuickTime.)
What is the best way to do this? Do I need to compress it? I have heard of compressing large files to make it easy to e-mail, but I don't know how to do it. If so, will he be able to hear it when he opens up the e-mail on his end?
If anyone could give me step-by-step instructions on how to send this, I'd be most grateful. Thank you.

If you have Stuffit Expander check inside the folder for Drop Stuff.
Drop the movie file onto Drop Stuff.
This will compress the music file.

You can send large music files through You Send It which is FREE!
There are others but, You Send It is the easiest.

Since you have a High-speed connection, the easiest & fastest way is through AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). You do not need to be a member of AOL.
I send all my music & movie files this way instead of using email.
iChat has the same ability of transferring large files as AIM.

Splitting large video files into small chunks and combining them

Thank you for viewing my thread. I have searched for hours but cannot find any information on this topic.
I need to upload very large video files. The files can be something like 10GB in size, currently .mpeg format but they may be .mp4 format later on too.
Since the files will be uploaded remotely using using internet from the clients mobile device (3G or 4G in UK) I need to split the files into smaller chunks. This way if there is a connection issue (very likely as the files are large) I can resume the upload without doing the whole 10gb again.
My question is, what can I use to split a large file like 10Gb into smaller chunks like 200mb, upload the files and then combine them again? Is there a jar file that I can use. i cant install stuff like ffmpeg or JMF on the clients laptops.

There is a Unix command called split that does just that splits a file into chunks of a size you specify. When you want to put the bits bact together you use the command cat.
If you are comfortable in the terminal you can look at the man page for split for more information.
Both commands are data blind and work on binary as well as text files so I would think this should work for video but of course check it out to see if the restored file still works as video.

Splitting Large Video Files

I have just finished crafting my sisters wedding video and the resultant M2T file generated by PE9 is 10GB - and looks great on the computer. However,the file size has presented a problem, how on earth do I get it onto a PS3? For my home PS3, I can transfer it over wireless. But my plan to ship it on a USB stick for my sister to put in her PS3 has come undone thanks to the FAT file size limitations.
So apart from reducing the video quality or buying a bluray burner (neither option attractive), how can I do it? If I could split it the file up into smaller parts I could create a playlist on the PS3 to join the parts together but I'm not exactly keen on rendering lots of small parts with PE9. I guess I'm looking for some 3rd party tool to split the M2t file?
Any ideas?

The splitting will certainly work, with a bit of effort and downloading two copies (one for you and one for her) of the free utility - great utility, BTW.
You could also pick up an external with USB connections, Convert it to NTSF, and then the file size limitation goes away. Now, whether a PS3 will read NTSF is beyond my knowledge. Also, I do not know if a memory stick can be Converted. Just in case, this ARTICLE will give you tips.
Were it me, I'd opt for the BD burner route, but even with the prices falling, I understand why one might not run that out instantly.

What is the best program for splitting large video files (for archiving)?

I have just finished a project and I want to back up everything to DVD-R discs, including all my capture files and completed movies exported from Final Cut. Some of the files are 5 or 6 Gb, too large for one DVD-R disc.
I tried downloading a program called MacHacha, and did a test on one file, splitting it into 3 segments and then joining it back together with the same program. The resulting file should have been a duplicate of the original, but it was not. It was not even recognized by QuickTime Player as a .mov file.
What program do you use for this purpose? What program is reliable for this and produces a joined file that is identical to the original?

Thank you for your help and suggestions. I tried a couple of experiments with a video file that has chapter markers. This was created in FCE using the "Export - QuickTime Movie" command.
One experiment was to bring the file into a new, blank sequence in FCE. Then export it right back out as a QuickTime movie. The resulting movie appears to be identical to the original, except that there are no chapter markers any more.
The second experiment was to make a duplicate of the original sequence which I used to make the movie in the first place. In this duplicate, I deleted everything except the chapter markers. I then brought in the video file into that sequence and exported it. The resulting file appears to be identical, and this one does have the chapter markers.
The only problem with doing it that way is that I lose all my edits. What if I wanted to edit something or adjust one of my original edits? I can't go back to that stage, with all my original edits, if I don't have all the original source files.
In addition, it's not clear to me exactly how I would use FCE as the "splitting program." How do you split a sequence into smaller parts?
All I really want to do is take a "snapshot" of the entire project, including all the source files, capture scratch files, etc. I don't need to back up the render files because those can easily be re-rendered. The entire project is taking up about 72 Gb on my hard drive, and I want to offload the whole thing. Even if it takes me 20 DVD-R discs to do it, that's no problem. Someone must have come up with a program or solution to do this.

Splitting large dv file

I captured footage into a final cut project using a tape deck. now i captured everything as a whole. someone is asking me to burn my raw dv files onto a dvd to use the footage. i have one dv file in my capture scratch folder that is 5.43 gb, too large to burn onto a dvd. how in the world do i get that file onto a dvd? do i need to compress it? if so will i lose quality? can i split it somehow?

put the file in a sequence. add an in point at the head and halfway down or so, put an outpoint at a cut or somewhere that makes sense. Add a second to that outpoint so you have some overlap. file>export qt movie make self contained.
Do the same with the second half, backing up the in point again so you have overlap. burn each one to a dvd-rom.
(you are doing the overlaps so that you can put it all back together at the other end with no loss of frames.

Splitting Large iMovie File into two

I have a recording of a HD video of a play of two acts that I have already loaded into iMovie 6. The total length is about 2 hrs and 20 minutes. I don't think that I can put all of this on a single disk, even with my new MacBook Pro. I haven't encountered any of these double sided disk blanks that I hear about.
So, I planned to put Act one on one DVD disk and Act two on a second one. I have done this previously with no problem (for a non HD video recording using iMovie version 5) , but I don't recall exactly my procedure.
I tried to simply create two new iMovie projects, one for Act I, the other for Act II and import to the respective new files. However, when it starts importing the first act, iMovie says that it will take some 720 minutes! That's a long time, and then there is Act two to import.
Surely, there is a more efficient method of accomplishing this task? Does anyone know?

My total file for the play was about 206 GB. This did not give me much room to duplicate, even on my new 500GB external hard drive. When I tried to drag clips to another project, the times ran very long. Maybe I wasn't doing something right, but don't know. In any case, there was a way around all of this.
It finally occured to me to simply lift Act II from the time line and put it carefull in order on the clip shelves. I then completed the editing of Act I and the DVD part, encoded & burned a DVD to see how it looked on our TV, made a sequence of corrections, and finally got to the task of burning the 50+ copies I needed for the full cast.
With Act I completed, I went back into iMovie and moved the clips in Act I from the time line to the clip shelf, all carefully in order. I moved Act II onto the time line, did all of the editing needed, made a new DVD for Act II (several times) and then ran off the needed 50+ copies of Act II. Surprisingly, even the chapter markers already assigned carried over fine, but appropriately renumbered.
The technique turned out to be pretty simple. But, the large (for me) project involved a large number of hours of careful work
In any case, it's all finally accomplished and I gave the copies to my grand daughter this evening. They had put on a magnificant performance and now have something to study for further improvement - and to just save for looking at in future years.
What we do for grand children!!

Split large AVCHD file

Hi,
A friend used my Handycam to record another friends gig. It was recorded in one shot, lasting about 50mins, and is about 19gbs in size when imported into Final Cut Express. I'm now trying to chop it up into the 6 individual songs, but I think the large file size is making processing very slow.
Is there anyway I can 'chop' the video up during log and transfer, so that I am working with smaller chunks (or another way of doing it), without having to import it all, slice it up, export each clip as a movie, and then open it seperately?

The format is Apple intermediate codec, 1440 x 1080. 16-bit stereo, 48,000 kHz. FPS 25.
I have created independent clips for each of the songs, but my lack of knowledge on FCE means I don't know if that is the same thing as a subclip.
You may already have answered my question:

Your 11MB file is well within the file-size limits for ExportPDF, but depending on the number of pages, complexity of the file (and yours doesn't sound complex), and your connection speed, it is possible that the service is simply timing out before it can finish processing. These steps can help:
If the file already contains editable text (that is, it isn't a scanned document), try disabling OCR as outlined in this this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when converting PDF to Word or Excel.
Clear the browser cache and try again.
Try a different browser.
Let's start there. If you still can't export the file to Word, let me know and we'll take it from there.

The amount of memory used for data is a lot larger than the saved file size why is this and can I get the memory usage down without splitting up the file?

I end up having to take a lot of high sample rate data for relativily long periods of time. When I save the data it is usually over 100 MB. When I load the data for post-processing though the amount of memory used is excessively higher than the file size. This causes my computer to crash because 1.5 GB is not enough. Is there a way to stop this from happening withoput splitting up the file into smaller files.

LabVIEW can efficiently handle large files, far beyond 100Mb, provided that care is taken in the coding of the loading/processing routines. Here are several suggestions:
1) Check out the resources National Instruments has put together (NI Developer Zone > Development Library > Measurement and Automation Software > LabVIEW > Development System > Optimizing Applications > Managing Memory), specifically the article entitled "Managing Large Data Sets in LabVIEW".
2) Load and process the data in chunks if possible.
3) Avoid sending the data to front panel indicators, using local/global variables for data storage, or changing data types unless absolutely necessary.
4) If using LabVIEW 7.1, use the "show buffer" tool to determine when LabVIEW is creating extra
copies of data in memory.

How to Split Large Files?

I've got a large 4GB+ file that I want to transfer onto my USB stick, but because it's a FAT32 format, it won't allow transferring over 4GBs.
How can I split the file into two 2GB files then reattach them after unzipping?

Good observations but maybe I miss the part where the OP says imovie is involved.
I used Split&Concat when I was transferring files from a PC to a Mac when I had .mov files that were larger than the flash drive capacity. The flash drive was FAT format so this post specifically rang a bell. I am trying to remember what I used on the PC side but Split&Concat used the same file splitting format which was cross-platform.

How to split Large mp4 and AVI video files to smaller scenes

I’ve been looking into how to cut-up large files ready for import into CS4. So far all I can find are the usual suspects that only lets you cut a section from a file. Dose anyone use any software that enables you to split a large video file (MP4, AVI and so on) into say 20 sections all in one hit?
I do a lot of HD onboard cams, so the video is set to fire and only shut off when the run has finished. I then end up with about 60 percent of the file (in diferent parts) I need to trash.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated indeed!
