'split' or multiple album seen in coverflow or grid view

Looked through previous posts, didn't see this, sorry if old news. I have latest itunes running on dell laptop.
In Itunes library, it somehow 'split' an album, creating 2 identical entries, one with 9 tracks, one with 1 track. In 'get info', all the entries appear correct, i.e. no reason for the split to exist that I can see, everything spelled correctly, etc.
Have been completely unsuccessful figuring out how to "combine" or copy/paste, or move the orphan track into the bigger album file.
Any ideas? Thanks...

I frequently get this problem... I like to sort by "Album by Artist" and sometimes as was stated before, the artist has a "Guest" or "featured" artist and iTunes will think this is a seperate album. Try Highlighting all the tracks at once, click on "Get Info" and then retype the album name and the artists name. When done, if that doesn't re-group the album, you may have to just suck it up and click on "Compilation" on the last "Get Info" page. This is a sort of last ditch effort to keep the tracks together.
Most of the time I find there was a mispelling on the one track that is not grouped compared to the others. Also if one track has a capital letter where the other tracks do not: "The White Album" as opposed to "the White Album", iTunes will see that as a seperate album.
Sometimes, even closing iTunes and then reopening it will fix the sort after I've made edits. Other times I retype every single field and still can't find the error!

  • Songs from a single album STILL split up (multiple albums in cover flow)

I performed the steps listed in the FAQ to consolidate files of this sort (select all files in the Album, do a "Get Info", and make sure all Album/Album Artist/Artist entries are the same), but the multiple albums I see in cover flow are still there. Has anyone had this problem?

One other place it might cause them to break up are the disc _ of _ fields and the Track _ of _ fields.
If they are different from track to track, that might do it. Select all the tracks again, do a Get Info on the bunch. disc _ of _ fields should all be blank, but just in case one or more does have that filled in, but not all of them, go ahead and check the little check marks next to those two fields to reset them ALL to blanks.
Then for the Track _ of _ fields fields, if the second one is not filled in, that could be a problem. It should show the total number of tracks in the CD. So 10, 12, etc. whatever the total number is, if it is NOT there, then fill it in.
OK out of the album. Any better? If not, then next check the track numbers. Go to the first track, select, Get Info, and make sure it is set for Track 1 of X fields (where X is of course the total number of tracks. If it is OK use the NEXT button on the bottom of that window to advance to the next track and go through each one in turn making sure they are all set correctly (1, 2, 3, etc.).

  • Movie thumbnail previews in Coverflow and Grid view...not there

I'm using Snow Leopard and have both QT-X and QT 7 Pro on my MacBook Pro.
In Finder, I have a folder containing several movie types including mpeg, avi, mov, qt, m4v, mp4, flv and wmv
I've noticed that I don't see thumbnail previews for any of these movies and wondered if anybody else can see their thumbnails, either in Grid View or Coverflow
In 3-column view, the thumbail appears once the file is highlighted.
In iTunes, the thumbnail also appears (for those that can be added to the Library)
I also have the latest Perian and Flip4Mac apps installed.
I've tried re-launching Finder after deleting the com.apple.quicklook.plist file
    Thanks

I also tried this (deleting the Quicklook cache) and no luck, still the same issue.
I did a clean installation and this works
However, I did again the installation and imported my USER profile in FULL via the assistant when you first configured Snow Leopard (using an FULL BACKUP copy and/or Time Machine Backup) and then problem reappears
I have reinstalled DivX, Desinstalled RealPlayer deinstalled Perian and still the same issue. I cannot see the Thumbnails or the Cover Flow of the video/movie file such MPG, MPG, AVI, WMV but it works for MP4 I have for my IPod
I finally gave up and left this last installation and I did not have the energy to migrate my data, emails, settngs, etc manually.
By the way, the upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8 towards Snow Leopard 10.6 was smooth but the performance was awful specially after installing 10.6.1. With the upgrade I had the same issue with my USER account or with any, NO THUMBSNAILs for most of my videos enough though they are played correctly in Quicktime and Quicklook....

  • Multiple entries for a genre in Grid View by Genre

The title says it. I have dozens of "Pop" icons in the Grid view by Genre. And for Rock. And for some others. I actually went through and changed the "Pop" ones to another genre, got them all into one entry in Grid view, then I changed them back to Pop and stupid iTunes put back in all those separate Pop entries. What the ****? It's been doing this for a while. On multiple computers. Why?
I wish I could attach a screen shot of this, that would be much easier to comprehend.

I spoke with Apple Support today and they provided a workaround:
    I had 7 entries for a person.
Find untagged photo with person in it. Select Entry 1
Find untagged photo with person in it. Select Entry 2
Repeat until you have at least 1 photo tagged with each of the 7 entries
Now go back to Faces and you'll see 7 polaroids listed.
Select each of them and merge them.
    Problem solved.

  • Uploaded CD split into multiple albums by artist

Hello - I'm new to itunes, so please forgive me if this very basic - When I upload a cd into itunes if there are multiple artists on the album, it may appear in itunes as multiple cd's. For example, I just uploaded LeeAnn Womack's Christmas album, "The Season for Romance." There are 10 tracks, one of which features Harry Connick Jr. in itunes, it shows up as two albums - one of them contains 9 tracks with just Leann Womack and the other one contains the one song with Harry Connick Jr. I've tried to use the feature "consolidate tracks" but that doesn't seem to do anything. I'v also tried to change the artist name to just LeeAnn Womack on the song with Harry Connick Jr so it would be sorted with the others. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Select multiple groups of contiguous images in Grid view

In Windows, the following conventions should be followed when selecting images in the Library module or Filmstrip.
    1. select an image by left mouse click
    2. extend the contiguous selection by Shift+left mouse click on the last image in group
    3. add to the selection by Ctrl+left mouse click on an image
    4. add another contiguous selection by Shift+Ctrl+left mouse click on the last image in group.
In LR V1 on Windows XP Pro, only 1,2, and 3 work; but adding a second contiguous selection (point 4) does not work and behaves like point 3. More images can only be added to a selection by Ctrl+left mouse clicking each individual image (which quickly gets tiresome.)
Note that these conventions work in both Bridge CS2 and beta CS3.

    Second that!
Shift+Page Down to select next page down as well Ctl+Shift+End to select everything to the end of the grid would also be useful

  • ITunes 9.2 blurry album art in Coverflow

I've noticed that performance when using both Coverflow and grid view has improved, however this is at the expense of blurry album art.
Normally art downloaded from the iTunes store is high quality. When you are in cover-flow it is difficult to discern the quality, however go to full screen and you can clearly see the detail in the artwork. However now, when going full screen in cover-flow, all the album artwork has a blurry look.
To compare how full screen album art should look, view the "album art viewer" in the lower left hand corner of iTunes. Click the artwork and it will display at it's original size, compare this image to the artworked viewed in Coverflow Full-Screen. There is a noticible difference in sharpness.
Normally this "blurry effect" only occurs for artwork applied manually via drag and drop and viewed full screen in coverflow mode. It has now been applied to all artwork.
What is the point of high quality album art if it can't be viewed as originally intended? Performance increases are nice, but I preferred the previous coverflow experience even at the expense of a little performance.

I haven't had this issue. I'd download a program such as Media Monkey to see what the resolution of artwork is. Generally an image that is 600X600 will be of excellent quality in iTunes. Other than that, it could be a rare bug.
Have you tried removing the artwork from one song/audiobook and right clicking on it and choose "Get album artwork" to see if that resolves the issue?

  • How do I keep iTuunes from splitting up 1 album into multiple albums

I have a number of albums where the main artist is perfroming with other muscians listed with the title of the song.  When I import these albums into iTunes, it takes one album and splits it up into 10-12 different albums; 1 album for each song.  How do I keep iTumnes from segregating songs that are really all part of one album?  I don't want to to edit each song to remove the second artist, in order to re-integrate the songs back into one album.  What a pain.  Help.
    Thanks,
    Olyduck
PS:  I never did encounter this issue when using Windows Media Player.

The sort fields control where in a sorted list a given value appears, e.g. you can ensure that David Bowie is sorted under B instead of D by setting the sort artist, sort album artist and sort composer to "Bowie" or "Bowie, David" where relevant. Experience suggests however that you shouldn't try to fix multiple album listings by giving different values the same sort value. It may sometimes work in iTunes, only to fail when you put those tracks on a portable device or add another album by the same artist.

  • During import, how to auto split one project into multiple albums based on date?

I believe I've done enough aperture reserach to get all my terminology right, so here goes...
I've created a file structure within the aperture inspector the the tune of:
Year [folder], Type of event (Occasion, special occasion, holiday, vacation) [folder], Project (Wedding), Album (i.e. Day 1, Day 2 or Pre wedding week, event, honeymoon).
I also have entire months with 7 or 8 pictures each day, that are of the same type/project (random dog pictures) but are distinctly different days (albums - day in park, in bed at night, watching movie).
My question is, can I import one project with multiple albums already created based on the date they're taken.  As I can see it, all I can do is split individual projects automatically by date.  But what if one project is over one month, but has multiple distinct days that would be ideal for albums?  One more example.  We did a trip to San Fran.  One day was touring the city, one day was a concert, another day was touring the city.  All one project, but 3 different albums (in my mind).  I had to import as one project, then separately go in and make albums.  I would like that done automatically.
My suspicion is that I can not natively do this within aperture, and that I would need something called an "applescript."  I haven't done any reserach into that area, so if that's the case and you know where I can find a script that would do this, I'd appreciate the help.
Sorry for the wordiness, just wanted to be clear.  Thanks for any and all help!

  • How can i prevent itunes from splitting individual albums into multiple albums?

How do prevent itunes from splitting albums with various artists into multiple albums?
    Thanks for your help!

It's probably better to put Various Artists into the Album Artist box rather than just "various". Make sure it's the Album Artist field though. In addition, you need to mark the album as a compilation. When setting the complete album, the Part of a compilation is on a drop-down menu on the File/Get Info/Options tab:
but if changing just one song, it's a tick-box on the Info tab:
and needless to say, the album name must be exactly the same for each track.

  • Album view split into multiples

I have a particular album that seems to be always split as though it's multiple albums, containing only one song.
I've tried all the tricks that I know of, including the Get Info trick, and even ticking the compilation option.  I've even re-named all the song titles, and even manually deleted & re-imported songs.
For some reason, I haven't been able to solve this one, and I've put this little problem aside for the last week or two, but now I'm starting to wonder if I ran into another iTunes bug here.  Using the latest version.

ALL of the tag data has to match for the songs belonging to any given album (except of courser for track number and title). Just select ALL tracks on the album and re-enter the information. If you still have problems, go to View > View Options and enable (temporarily) a wider variety of columns to view in the iTunes window. You should then see where the discrepancy is.
FWIW, on the album you're having trouble with, there are some tracks with different artists, so you may need to populate the Album Artist field with 50 Cent in order to keep things grouped together properly.

  • Cover flow albums show songs from multiple albums

I love my iPod classic. the only issue I'm having is that when reviewing some albums via the coverflow feature, about 5 albums shows songs from multiple albums. they play correctly. It appears just the listing is messed up. I've tried deleting, adding the albums back to the library and resyncing, but it's still happening. Anybody seen this?

Try *One cover, too many tracks* below:
    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Show or view multiple album art for one song on iPhone 4?

Is it possible to show or view multiple album artwork for one song on an iPhone 4, especially on the now playing screen? I figured since iTunes has this feature then the iPhone should too. Can I download an app that does this? I've searched but couldn't find any, maybe I'm using other keywords. Could anyone point me in the right direction with this?

Darn. I hope an app is designed to be able to do this soon. From what I've seen this feature isn't really in demand so it could take a while. Thanks for replying.

Albums that feature a mixture of artists cause the sorting/grouping in iTunes to split an album even if it is marked as a compilation. A particularly good example of such an Album is Queen's Greatest Hits III which features 'guest' artists like David Bowie. This album would still be considered to be a Queen album but the artist of some tracks would not be Queen.
Microsoft of all people, came up with a solution for this which was to add an additional meta tag for albums called "Album Artist" as opposed to the normal "Artist" tag (which is used to indicate the Artist of a particular track).
Apple after receiving requests from people (including myself) added support for this Album Artist tag in iTunes 7 but unfortunately only did half the job. With iTunes 7 you can now see and edit this tag but you cannot browse or sort by this tag. Therefore when you browse or sort by Artist, iTunes is using the "Artist" tag and not the "Album Artist" tag and hence your tracks are not sorted as you expected and albums like Queen's Greatest Hits III still get split up.
The ONLY way to get iTunes to display albums properly grouped is to sort by the Album name, if you do this then Cover Flow will only display each album once (as you would expect).
Windows Media Player (unlike iTunes) does let you browse by Album Artist.
Note: If you have more than one Album with the same name e.g. "Great Hits" things may once again get interesting, I work around that by adding a space character at the end of the name so "Great Hits" and "Great Hits " are considered different.
