Splitter/small switch for allow for 2 wired devices

I have a Mac Mini downstairs, and have just bought an Xbox 360. I don't want the 360 wireless adpater, so I've hard-wired my 360 and put the Mac Mini in wireless mode.
Problem is I transfer a lot of huge files (HD movies) onto the Mac Mini from my (hard wired) iMac over the network, so I could really do with the 360 AND the Mac Mini being wired.
I don't want to trail another cable right through/up the house, so I thought of maybe a small splitter. I seen some on eBay for 99p, but I have doubts - I think they're just dumb bits of hardware, and surely if both devices end up going back to the same port on the router, there will be problems with having the same IP, etc?
Do I really need a switch rather than just a splitter/adapter? If so, can someone recommend a very small one? I'm also short on power sockets and I presume a switch would need to be powered.
Thanks

I've never heard of a splitter for ethernet. If it works by switching the port that is active, not leave both active, then if might work ok.
I've used a D-Link 100baseT switch (DES-1105) that worked fine. It does require power, though.

• Error Pay scale grpg for allowances for 02002162 is not defined on 20110408

Hi,
I do get the above error Pay scale grpg for allowances for &1 is not defined on &2 when running program RHECM_UPD_0008_FROM_1005 for Indian employees. I know that we have indirect evaluation for our Indian employees in it0008. And we do not have 'Define Pay scale grouping for allowances' (V_T7INA1) and 'Pay scale grouping for allowances' (V_T7INA3) configured for India. But then we are also not using payroll for India.
Most strange is, that the program runs just fine in the development system for a India test employee record, whereas it fails to run in the test system for a real live India employee.
The error message code is HRPADIN01 084 and is thrown by function module HR_ECM_INSERT_INFOTYPE. But since it;s code is all object oriented I'm getting terribly lost when trying to observe in debug mode what the actual problem is. When running the program I use planned comp. type 'S' (Salary Structure)
Employees in all other countries update just fine, and the planned compensation infotype on the employee's job code look fine also.
Would appreciate your help please as for what could be causing this error!
Thanks,
Philipp

P.S. I have now maintained some test entries in V_T7INA1 and V_T7INA3 that match my employee's infotype 0008 entry. This does not make a difference unfortunately though. During debugging I found the message is raised in method CL_HRPA_INFOTYPE_0008_IN/CHECK_WAGETYPES_IN and within that method GET_ALGRP and then cl_hrin_services=>read_algrp.
In the method that reads t7ina3 the code is:
method READ .
IF NOT ( a_is_buffered = true  AND
               a_t7ina3-molga  = molga AND

               a_t7ina3-trfkz  = trfkz AND
               a_t7ina3-trfgr  = trfgr AND
               a_t7ina3-trfst  = trfst ).
        CLEAR a_t7ina3.
        a_t7ina3-molga = molga.
        a_t7ina3-trfgb = trfgb.
        a_t7ina3-trfar = trfar.
        a_t7ina3-trfkz = trfkz.
        a_t7ina3-trfgr = trfgr.
        a_t7ina3-trfst = trfst.
        SELECT SINGLE * FROM t7ina3 INTO a_t7ina3
          WHERE
            molga = molga AND
            trfgb = trfgb AND
                  trfar = trfar AND
                  trfkz = trfkz AND
                  trfgr = trfgr AND
                  trfst = trfst.
              a_subrc = sy-subrc.
              a_is_buffered = true.
            ENDIF.
IF a_subrc IS INITIAL.
              t7ina3 = a_t7ina3.
            ELSE.
              CLEAR t7ina3.
            ENDIF.
endmethod.
In there a_t7ina3 is filled initially (but interestingly field algrp is the only one that is blank). But since it is filled and matches the if not condition it does not go and select from the DB but clears t7ina3 and thus runs into the error afterwards.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks,
Philipp

Some Internet providers that limit access to a single device at a time do so by the device's hardware MAC address. If your ISP is one of those, you may be able to substitute the MAC address of your AirPort Express base station for the computer. I would suggest that you contact them to find out if this is allowable.

• Does an audio splitter allow for power and audio out on the shuffle? (yet?)

(I saw there was a post about this from 2009, but checking again since it's 6 years later)
I want to use a shuffle to play music through an art piece in an exhibit for several months but realized I would need power AND audio. Would an audio splitter do the trick? I see the shuffle USB cable has three white bands and a splitter like the Belkin only has two:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA828ZM/A/belkin-audio-splitter-35mm-m2x35mm-f ?fnode=63582f9cd24290de2d1749b7e75ef4d31…
And if a splitter doesn't work, is there any other way to allow for audio and power now?
thx,
Sarah

Hi JamilMereck,
first of: you can edit previous posts in a time-frame of some minutes (haven't measured it ...).
After that they become non-editable.
I admit I have used microphones some years back with and without PCs (have switched to Macs 2.5 years ago).
But I always had the mics connected to a mixing desk, which provided Phantom Power.
Since I gave up my 'Singing Career' (wasn't good enough) I also abandoned the use of microphones.
To your questions:
It might be that PCs with specified Microphone-In ports are also providing power to them or the microphones themselves do not need any power.
And the 'compatible with...' refers to the usage on computers in general.
The iMic from Griffin works with OSX 10.5 (scroll down on the webpage to 'Product Compatibility' the left icon symbolizes OSX 10.5).
As said above, I am no longer up-to-date in usage of microphones, but when you want to use a microphone with the standard connector you have to get either a microphone preamp or a mixer.
If you use the mic only (really only) with your Mac Pro, you might wanna look for USB-connected mics from Samson or Audio Technica for example.
And don't get upset, I understand you fully and any kind of 'insult' is for the manufacturers and not for me

Gosh I am already tired of trying to retrieve this photo album and it seems like a waste of time and money spent on an apple IMac.
No disrespect intended but until you learn how iPhoto and Macs work you will continue to be confused and frustrated.
You say you want to create a book in iPhoto and have it printed by Apple, right.  Have you finished creating  the book in iPhoto? If so the Control (right) - click in the View all pages window background and select Save Book as  PDF in the contextual menu?
Open the the PDF file with Preview and check for any errors or problems.  If there are none you can order the book by clicking oin the Buy Book button at the bottom. Save the pdf file to compare with the printed book when it arrives in you feel there's a problem with it.  That's all you need to do.  There's no use of the Finder required.

• HT1535 Does iTunes 11 allow for the "dragging" and "dropping" of music from a library onto a manually managed device?

It appears that iTunes 11 does not allow for the "dragging" and "dropping" of music from a library onto a manually managed device.. is that true? I am trying to drag a playlist onto my iPhone. I've done it many times before on previous versions of iTunes but now that the menu is up in the heading, I can't drag the playlist onto the icon for my iPhone.

Zmaj3 wrote:

No.
Sync you are not syncing, the ONLY way to get items onto a manually managed device is to drag and drop.
However, I feel a much simpler way is to create a playlist and add/remove songs from this playlist and autosync this playlist (or multiple playlists). I use about 6 or 7 playlists
You can still also drag & drop songs while autosycning.

• How can i disable iphone 4s apple email, and substitute gmail app, which allows for replies, compose, send

iphone4s built-in email is frustrating because it does not allow for replies to incoming mail; deletions and archiving, composing new mail, et al., as gmail does.. is it possible to disable or eliminate iphone email app and sub for gmail app, which i use regulary, just as i do on my laptop?
if not, what alternative solutions exist?
thanks very much.,

In the native iOS app, if you set the default behavior to send a deleted message to Trash, you can still Archive it by moving it to "All Mail" in the same way you can move a message to any other folder.
As for the GMail app, I don't see a need for it but I suppose it depends on what you want.  You can have multiple GMail accounts set up on your device with the iOS Mail app, but if you want a quick way to switch between accounts you can use the GMail app for a particular account and iOS Mail for another.  Beyond that I don't see any advantage to the GMail app, other than maybe a priority Inbox.  The iOS Mail app can do push notifications for GMail if you set it up as an Exchange account (see below), so they're equivalent in that regard.
Since you're a GMail user, you might want to delete your GMail account in iOS settings and re-create it as an Exchange account.  That way you get push notifications, and your GMail contacts automatically remain synced between GMail and your device (over the air, no need to re-sync to iTunes).  To do this, read the article below:
http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?l=en&topic=14252&answer=138740
One caveat though:  When you set GMail up as an Exchange account, the default behavior of deleting a message is Archive (even though the button will say Delete).  To change this default, the only way is to use your iPhone's Safari to navigate to m.google.com/sync after you set up your Exchange account on your iPhone.  There you can change the behavior to actually delete a message when you tap Delete. Other than that little task (a one-time thing) you'll be set.

• Best setting for my set of devices

I would like to know what would be the best settings to get the maximum throughput for my set of devices.
Last night both Airport Extreme and Airport Express were updated with firmware to 7.5.2
1) Upstairs I have an Airport Extreme. Newer version with 2.4gz and 5ghz bands. This is connected to my AT&T Uverse router/modem. My iMac is ethernet connected to the Airport. Running speed tests I get almost the expected speeds of 12mbs download and 1.5mbs upload.
I had setup a 2.4ghz network and a 5ghz network but may not have used the best settings for my environment.
2) Downstairs is an Airport Express. I is a "n" version
3) Connected to the Airport Express via ethernet is a small ethernet hub and connected to that are 2 Dishnetwork 722 DVRs. Each 722 has a Sling Adapter to allow viewing the contents over the internet via iPhone, iPad or web browser. This was the goal for the Express, to supply that info.
Getting max speed out of this Express is important to get the DVRs output out of my house and to my iPad or iPhone.
4) These are the following devices that are connecting at the house via wifi:
a) iPhone 4
b) iPhone 3g
c) Apple TV newest model and is downstairs next to the Airport Express
d) iPad
e) Macbook Air first generation and this is used downstairs in the same room as the Airport Express
Using Airport Utility it appears that all devices show 80211.n and 5ghz except the iphone 3G, which shows 802.11 b/g AND shows it attached to the Airport Express even when I'm next to the Extreme.
From the Airport Utility, I've seen the values fluctuate but here is what shows Signal, Rate and Noise for each device as a snapshot on the Airport Extreme
iPhone 4 -44, -96, 65
Airport Express -59, -96, 144
Apple TV -70, -96, 52
iPad -50, -96, 65
Macbook Air -24, -96, 216
Using the Airport Utility, the Airport express show these values
iPhone 3G -66, -85, 54
Airport Extreme -54, -86 104
Let me know if you need any other details.

Any advice on the best Airport Utility settings for the Extreme and the Express?
The default settings work very well, so unless you have a specific reason to change them, I would stay with those settings
Should the Express extend a network or join a network?
"Extend" provides more wireless coverage in the area where the Express is located. "Join" provides better bandwidth if you are using only for iTunes, etc. Most users want more wireless coverage.
If I were to extend at network, should the Express extend to the 5ghz or the 2.4ghz
If you have good signal strength at the location of the Express, 5 GHz will support up to 270 Mbps bandwidth. 2.4 GHz will support up to 130 Mbps. You want as much bandwidth as you can get for high definition video performance if you are using wireless. If you have an option to connect the DVRs using ethernet, that will provide the best performance.
The iPhone would have to connect back to your main router if you set the Express up for 5 GHz. It is not easy to extend 5 GHz. You literally have to have very close to a line of sight situation between the main router and the Express for this to work.
If I were to get another Extreme, should it join or extend the network on the Extreme upstairs.
The Extreme does not really do anything if you set it up to "join". The ethernet ports are not active. All you would be able to do with the device in this setting is attach a printer or hard drive to the USB port.
Any documents that would explain the best choices for linking 2 Extremes together?
Apple AirPort Networks is a very good guide.
If you are linking two routers together, an ethernet connection is always the "best" way to do this because it provides maximum bandwidth performance. Up to 1000Mbps with ethernet. "Extending" using wireless only can work well if the "extending" AirPort receives a very strong wireless signal. Ideally, there would be a line-of-sight situation between the devices or close to that ideal.

• How do I change the icloud account on my iphone? I want to use the same account for all my apple devices (macbook air and imac and iphone). I can't see where I can amend the iphone account because it is in grey?

I want to use the same account for all my apple devices (macbook air, imac and iphone). I can't see how I can amend the iphone account because it is in grey? I also can't remember the password for this account so i can't even delete it and start again?
Help!
Thanks

Deleting an iCloud account only deletes it from the Device, not from iCloud.  In iOS 8, the name of this setting changed to "Sign Out" as that is a better reflection of what actually happens.  Your iCloud data remains on the server, available to devices still signed into the account, but the device you sign out of the account on is disconnected from the account, and as a result, the iCloud data from that account is removed from the device.  It will redownload to the device should you sign back into the account.
The only issue you'll run into when you switch between accounts is with my photo stream photos older than 30 days.  When you delete (or sign out of) and account, your photo stream photos are deleted along with the other data from the account in question.  However, unlike other data which remains on the server and can redownload to your device when you sign back in, my photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days.  When you sign back in, you will only get back my photo stream photos added in the last 30 days (as older photos are no longer in iCloud to redownload).  Like other account data, any my photo stream photos on your other devices signed into the account are unaffected by this.  If you want to keep older my photo stream photos on your device as you change iCloud accounts, save them to your camera roll before deleting (signing out of) the account.

• Looking for an iPad(iPad/Mac) app that allows for playlists to migrate to iPad

I am specifially and exclusively looking for recommendations for an iPad(iPad/Mac) app that allows for my playlists to be migrated to iPad intact and playable.
iTunes -> Podcast/Music/Videos does not support mixed (music/video/podcast) playlits or video playlist at all. The app(s) should be able to easily create these playlist on the Mac (and manage content) much like iTunes (10).
On the phone with tech support today and they agree this is missing functionality from Apple. They suggested I reach out on to other users that may have a thrid party solution.

Requires each device/user have an unique Apple ID(verifiable email address):
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8
Otherwise you can use Find My Phone, but requires logging in for each separate user. Find My Friends(built by Apple) will show everyone's location on one device.

• Cisco e3200 can't have more than 4 wired devices on switch

I have recently set up the internet at my house. It was complicated because we can't get the cables to the house, so we had to use a wireless p2p bridge to get the internet to us. So we have the ISP cable, and modem in one house, and the LAN and all users in another.
The ISP connection is fiber optics, into a box which is a modem and a router. The ISP modem/router connects to the internet, and than through eth port1 sends 100mbs connection to a wireless PTP bridge set up using mikrotik SXT Lite5.
On the other end of the wireless bridge is a Cisco E3200 router, running the latest official firmware. The cisco router connects to the internet using Automatic configuration - DHCP. So the ISP modem/router assigns the cisco an IP. Which is 192.168.1.3.
Up to here it all works. The internet works flawlessly, and I've tested it by plugging the bridge ethernet cable directly into a computer, and the computer got it's IP 192.168.1.x assigned instantly, and without an issue. So the ISP modem/router, and PTP bridge work perfectly.
The cisco than has its own DHCP for the LAN, which is on 192.168.2.1.
From the cisco e3200 goes a single 1GB cat5e eth cable to the TP-link 16-Port Gigabit Switch TL-SG1016 unmanaged switch.
From the switch go 6 connections currently:
Samsung TV, ETA Central heating, PC1, PC2, PC3, Wireless AP (onto which connect numerous smartphones, laptops, and tablets, mac and android)
When it works, it works flawlessy. All the PC's are on 1gbps connections, can ping eachother, can transfer files, DLNA works the internet is smooth etc. etc., so in short it works.
But there are huge problems! The router behaviour is very erratic. Sometimes everything works, sometimes it doesn't. The problems mostly occur on the PC's. The problem is basically that the PC gets an IP assigned by the cisco router DHCP (in the 192.168.2.100/50 range), and can see other PC's and devices on the network, and can ping other devices, and can transfer files from other devices, HOWEVER CAN NOT ping the router. So it gets IP from dhcp, but can not ping. There's no internet connectivity, and the PC can't connect to the cisco web setup (192.168.2.1)
So I've started troubleshooting. And there is only one common point. Whenever there are only 4 ETHERNET devices connected to the Cisco router it works fine.
So for example: I can connect 1 cable from the cisco to the tplink switch, and in the switch I can connect 3 PC's and 1 wireless AP, and it will work. Onto that AP I can connect a lot of devices and it will work.
HOWEVER, as soon as I connect additional devices to the switch/or router, for example the central heating unit, the PC's loose connectivity. However this also is erratic. The PC's loose connectivity BUT ONLY AFTER RESTART. The wireless AP still works, but only sometimes.
So the whole thing is weird and very very very hard to troubleshoot.
I have tried so many things, that I might have missed something, so if you have ANY ideas, everything's appreciated.

What are the best dimensions to allow for iPad 3 Retina for full-page landscape images?
I read an article and cannot find it that said something about trying to make it 2million pixels and JPG to keep it small, but what exactly should the dimensions be that I ultimately import?  Is there some kind of a "density" setting I have to use, as well, when exporting from Photoshop, for example?

See Optimizing performance in your iBooks Author books
Density is discussed by Apple in this context as 'dpi'...

Hi everyone, I was thinking of buying a new Macbook Pro Retina 15 Inch with the discrete nvidia graphics card inbuilt with it.
I love windows and I am planning on running windows 7/8 on the macbook pro as my primary OS (because of advantages of gaming and being familarized with windows os), however I have heard the issue of running windows on bootcamp severally drains battery life as apple does not allow you to switch the nvidia graphics to the integrated graphics. Is this true? I have heard that running windows 7/8 on bootcamp allows for only around 3:30 hours of battery life, whilst OSX allows for 8+ since it uses the integrated graphics primarily when not running GPU demanding applications.
I am wondering if you can install windows 7 without bootcamp which will wipe apple OS from the laptop completely. Will this allow for the laptop to do switable graphics without problems allowing the laptop to save much needed battery life?
Thanks in advance.

      Sorry it seems to have taken so long for you to get an answer on this question!
      Your last post was mostly right... It IS a bad idea to go that route!
      While it's technically POSSIBLE to get Windows in place without OSX, it's a MAJOR technical hassle and you need to jump through several hoops to get to that point.
      In addition to the hassle required, having an OSX partition can be incredibly useful at times - I've had my Windows system break several times in the past where the automated (and even manual) startup-repair process failed to get Windows booting again, but a short boot into OSX later, I have the problem resolved (via OSX) and am able to get back into Windows.
      Finally, you need to be aware that the graphics card situation isn't because of the presence of OSX. Just because you get rid of MacOS doesn't mean you suddenly will be able to use either graphics card! The limitation comes into play with the hardware drivers necessary to get all your hardware working in Windows - they just don't have the facility to switch graphics cards built into them.
      I'm afraid you're stuck with the NVidia card when using Windows, one way or another!
      Bootcamp is a prerequisite BTW. Without it you won't be able to get Windows installed at all (at least not without MAJOR stumbling block, again!), and again, the graphics card limitation isn't due to OSX or Bootcamp.
      Also, battery life... Yes. You'll have significantly less in Windows, and this isn't entirely because of the graphics card situation either. MacOS is just built so well, with the limited hardware used by Apple in mind, that power-management when using OSX os significantly better! The legendary battery life of Apple systems is actually primarily due to the operating system, not the batteries themselves!
      As a helpful indication: On my 2009 17" MBP I get about 7 hours on the integrated chip in OSX (8 is pusing it, but is possible sometimes); about 5 hours in OSX when using the NVidia; and about 3 and a half when I'm in Windows.
      Hope this all helps you. If you have any further questions feel free!
      Apologies for the scattered approach to answering your posts - it's LATE where I am and I"m kinda rushing through things... :-)
