Splitting 5.1 audio in logic

Is there any way to take an ac3 file from a dvd and import it into logic as 5+1 seperate channels? The purpose is to take something from a movie and isolate the dialogue from the center speaker, so in essense, splitting up a 5.1 and removin all but the center

I know but it would be easier to isolate the voices - I want less music

  • Latency, Recording incoming Audio into Logic,... I don't understand

I'm trying to clear up my understanding (or misunderstanding) of latency of incoming audio into Logic.
    As a test, here's what I did.
    Set-Up
    1. In Preferences/Audio/General, I set Plug-In delay Compensation to off.
    2. In Preferences/Audio/Core I set the I/O Buffer Size to 32 (is this necessary?, to go that low?)
    3. In Preferences/Audio/General I turn on the Low Latency Mode On, set Limit to 0ms (Zero Milliseconds)
    4. Created a 1/4 note click track with Klopfgeist.
    5. Just for reference, I converted to audio. Opened in the sample editor and it is indeed, exactly on the beat.
    6. Set up my Roland Fantom as a Midi instrument. Channel 10 to trigger a Side Stick sound.
    7. Create another 1/4 note click track.
    8. Recorded the Rolands Output into my MOTU 2408 interface into Logic.
9 Opened up the waveform up in the sample editor, zoom in and notice it is obviously late.
    10. Move the Anchor point 6 ticks to line it up,
Therefore, the incoming audio is off by 6 ticks.
Is it not possible to get 0 latency? I read the chapter in the manual but I believe this wasn't made clear, i could be wrong.
I have a guitarist coming over to record on my record in a week, I don't know how to deal with this except to move his entire track
    by 6 ticks. ?

That is not really the type of latency that's affected by your audio I/O buffer setting. A DAW system has different types of latency, MIDI latency, latency caused by some plugins, AD/DA converter latency..etc. The six tics will probably remain the same or close to it if you're buffer is set to 64, 126, 256...etc.
Why do you have "Low Latency" mode selected, do you know what it's function is?
The I/O buffer setting affects two main aspects.
The response of the system when you play a virtual instrument, and...
...real-time monitoring of an audio input track. (this is an audio signal that passes through Logics audio engine and can use live effects)
The example using the Fantom requires MIDI sent to the keyboard and the audio into the MOTU passes through the AD converter.
What you want to set is the Record Delay so that your audio records in time, however... it needs to be set using a loopback test.
Use a 1/4 note recorded audio click (side stick) that you've adjusted to be perfectly on the beat copy it a few times. Use a cable from the MOTU's output to an open channel's input, record the click, compare.. now adjust the "Recording Delay" until the recorded click matches the first click.
Recording delay is on the Preferences/Audio tab.

  • Duet makes noise after switching between finder audio and Logic

    Hi
My Duet makes noise after switching between "finder audio" and "Logic", In other words i would play a mp3 in the finder and when returning to Logic all my audio sounds like the "lo-fi" RTAS free plug digidesign gives away now.
This is happening on a White *iMac 24"*
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz

    Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
    SMC Version (system): 1.10f3
    MacOsx 10,5,7

Does this happen every single time? The same thing happens to me every once in a while. I just close Logic and Maestro and unplug the Duet. Then, in this order, plug in the Duet, wait for it to click, load Maestro, load Logic. Works every time.
Edit: It does only seem to happen when I switch from Logic and the audio output from the Duet to internal and then come back quickly. I don't think it's an issue with the Duet hardware itself.

  • Recording audio into logic?

hello, how can you record audio straight into logic express 7,i have an audio interface, just dont know how to control logic to do this.i know how to record it onto my hard drive, but just thought you might be able to record it into logic ,like you would recording midi, into a track etc..thats if you can do it at all ?
    hope this makes sense.
    thanx

When you record the track segment you are creating is saved on your hard drive. It is not data that is saved as part the song file itself. It is more like a link. Each segment is separate so you are going to create a new one each time you record a part of your song. Logic wants to place them into a common folder.
Logic needs to have a path to those files so it can access them for playback. It is best to have them in the song file folder rather than somewhere else on your hard drive. When you follow through with setting the audio path Logic will create the necessary folders for the different types of files it will need to access.
When you create a new song file it does not have that audio path. So, you either set up the link/path after you create a new song file, or when you try to record your first track segment, Logic will ask you to set that path before recording.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is there a way to get my FCPX audio to Logic Pro?

There was the automatic duck option but that no longer works with FCPX 10.03
Is there a way yet for me to get my audio to Logic Pro for mixing?

Roles are very powerful and smart. I just exported my project to Logic pro. In FCP X, select menu: modify/edit roles... select a category like dialog and in the right window, click the "+" and make some sub roles. I made one for each person in the film. You can create subs for other categories: under music, I aded thre roles named for the three music cues.
Then in the time line, turn on "view roles" in the popup where you adjust timeline sizes. Open the info (window cmd-4), and you can assign roles in the info panel of the clip. I selected all the dialog clips for the narator and assigned them to my subrole for him - all clips assigned at once - very easy.
Then after this tidying up, open menu: share/export media, select export audio roles as separte files, you can ad your new custom roles (at the bottom) and delete the default roles (there is a minus in the right column) then export the set of stems.
In logic, make the project 48k, set sync to match your timecode to the proper frame rate, import your stems, drag them all to the begining and let Logic make a new track for each - YEAH Baby... now you have everything in sync, and all the tracks you like.
There is no automation info transfered yet, but it works nicely.
As a bonus, open the timeline index in FCPx and all your subroles now have switches to turn them on or off, or highlight them. Click on one to see evey clip in your project with that role light up. Smart stuff.
Hopefuly, Logic will be able to open FCP X XML files soon. That would be SO nice.

  • How to record video or use screen capture WHILE capturing audio from Logic??

    Hi,
I want to record my self playing guitar and singing using my mac book pro built in camera. I want the audio to come from Logic so I can add whatever effects I want to the vocals. When I say audio from Logic I don't mean recording in Logic and adding it in post. I want it to be on the fly.
What I used to do was use the screen capturing program Snapz Pro. I would screen capture a box around photobooth for the video, and then record while having Logic's audio in the background. It screen captures my entire computers audio. So for example if I get an aim message the bleep would show up in the recording. Or if I raise the volume or lower it the little click sound fx would be in it as well.
Capturing the audio this way let me get Logic's audio effects in my video on the fly. It worked out great....until now! :/
I just got the audio interface "Duet 2". And am using a microphone instead of my mbp's built in one. When ever I tried to record and capture my systems audio - my entire computer would crash. Snapz Pro won't work with the system audio with the interface. It works fine without it though.
I then tried to use Quicktime's new movie recording feature. I see it only gives an option for microphone and now system audio. So I got soundflower to re route the audio but that doesn't help either. This is because when you capture this way you can't hear anything while your capturing. So if I were to record a video and wanted Logics audio in it, I would have to set the output to Soundflower first. So when I record I cant hear myself which defeats the purpose.
So my final question is, how can I record video while having Logic's audio? I don't need to record with the mic, because in Logic the mic audio is going thru the system audio with everything else.
I would like to use a process more similiar to Quicktimes straight movie recording instead of doing an odd way like I used to screen capturing a box around the photobooth screen.
    Thanks

  • Streaming audio from Logic 7.2

Has anyone found a good way to stream audio from Logic to another computer via the web? I'm tweaking a sound design mix for a client in another city and would love to be able to get them on the phone and have them be able to participate in real time. Where's the Rocket Network when you need it? : )Thanks.

    2 solutions:
    1. Old school: get a telephone coupler and send the mix down the phone line.
    2. iChat: feed your mix into a small mixer, open a mic when you want to talk, and feed the mix into your "line input" on iChat (make sure it's selected in preferences) and do an audio chat.

  • Is it possible to split an added audio clip (like you can with the video clips)?

I'm working in iMovie 9.   I've recorded a audio voiceover that I added to my video clips.
I want to be able to split the voiceover audio so I can separate the different sentences and move them to where they are appropriate relative to the video.
With video, this is easily done with shift+command+S.
I tried selecting the audio track and doing shift+command+S but it doesn't work.
I can't figure out how to do this.  Is it possible?

Thanks for the tip.  Tried it, no go.  Guess 9 is primitive that way.
I now remember a few years ago having the same problem, and I contacted Apple and suggested they make this possible in future versions of iMovie.   Guess they listened to me!

  • FCP Audio to Logic Pro

I've used Soundtrack Pro to edit my audio from FCP, sending it straight there, and the functionality is great--but I've had so many problems with Soundtrack Pro that I want to edit this next video's audio in Logic.  Is there a way to similarly send all the audio (on the same tracks, chopped up the same way, and so forth) from FCP to Logic Pro 9?
P.S.--I apologize if this topic has been covered before...I've had a very difficult time figuring out the new layout of the "support communities" here on Apple's site.  How do I search through the FCP forums?
    Thanks!

Yes, I hate the new forummunity as well. It lumps all the FCS apps into one hopper and it stinks.
    Enough kvetching -
re doing sound editing for video in Logic -
I just played around with this work flow and think this is how you can get it to work.
    1. Export your movie as video only- (self contained).
    2. Export your FCP sequence as an XML5 file
    3. Open Logic and create a new empty project.
    4. Import the XML. Your tracks should show up in the proper place and alignment
    5. Under Global Tracks, select Video>open movie. Then click on the your self-contained video file.
I make no warranty that this actually works.

  • Editing FCP project audio in another audio application (Logic, PT or DP)

Many thanks in advance for any help - I am wrapping up a score for a friend's documentary and just don't have time or video knowledge to figure this out on my own.
I need to edit sound in his Final Cut Pro project in another application. Pro Tools, Logic or Digital Performer. I can't just get AIF bounces because in many cases I need to access his edits, requiring much of the raw audio immediately preceding and following his cuts.
What is the quickest way to do this? Do OMF files preserve raw audio? XML?
Again, many thanks for your input.

I found the XML approach to be the most reliable, but you need access to the full FCP project and all the assets for Logic to load it, which can be a pain due to project sizes.
OMF works, but doesn't preserve some of the audio mix settings, despite including them in the file. Sometimes this is important, sometimes less so. Not sure if recent versions of Logic have improved this behaviour.
Either will get the audio into Logic at the right places and preserves edits, and OMF is the simpler way of doing it. I can't remember offhand if the OMF export allows you to add handles on the audio - in the main what OMF does is repackage out the audio into new audio files inside the OMF bundle, so you get everything in the timeline but not audio either side of the cuts.
Edit: Yes, OMF export does give you the option of adding handles on the audio files.
If you need everything, the using XML and the original assets is the way to go imo.
Otherwise, OMF will get you the audio in a more convenient package (one file with all the embedded audio reexported inside it.)

  • Sending audio from logic to external hardware effects, and back into Logic

    Hi,
I am currently trying to send audio from Logic to external hardware effects and then record this back into Logic.
My audio interface is a Edirol UA-25 which has only two outputs '1 and 2'.
I understand that I could create an 'aggregate device' which would create two more ins + outs being '3 & 4'.
I also understand that would need to use the Logic I/O plug in configuring this routing.
When treating the audio via the external hardware I particularly only want to hear the audio being processed and not the original 'uneffected' signal.
Can someone please explain if I am able to do all of this with just the UA-25, and if so, then how.
    Cheers,
    Mr Rock

You connect output 1 of your interface to your active speaker.
You connect output 2 of your interface to the input of your external effect.
You connect the output of your external effect to input 2 of your interface.
You route your track in Logic to output 2.
    You create a new track.
You route this new track to output 1 and output 1 only.
You choose input 2 as the source for this track.
    You arm the track.
    You hit Record.
You hit Stop some time later.

  • Why do voice-overs split up my audio stereo pairs?

    I'm using FCP 5.1 in OS 10.5.8.
Sometimes after I do voice-overs, I discover that all the stereo pairs on the audio tracks are split apart, and often widely separated vertically. To get them back together on adjacent tracks, I have to un-pair them in the Modify menu, push them back together on the audio tracks, and then re-pair them.
This unwanted splitting-up of audio stereo-pairs is a nuisance. How can I make them stay together?
    Tom

Thanks Meg! From now on, I'll do as you suggest and set the target audio track for voiceovers to be a blank one beneath all audio tracks that have anything on them. The project I'm working on has scads of stacked-up sound effects, so I have to aim voiceovers clear down to track A17, which is the first blank one I have! But that way they won't split up any stereopairs on the tracks above them.
I still don't see why the voiceover clips have to split up the stereo pairs to the right and left of them, when they're going onto a blank space on an audio track, but I guess that's just a peculiarity of the program. You've shown me that to prevent such trouble, a voiceover clip needs to appear on a completely blank track of its own, clear of all other audio clips. Then it can be moved up to wherever you want it to go on other tracks.
I was stymied at first when I couldn't get the A1 and A2 patches to appear in the patch panel, so that I could set the target track for voiceovers. They just weren't there. I finally figured out that to get the patches to appear, I have to double-click on any video clip in the Browser. That makes them show up.
    Thanks again,
    Tom

  • Exporting Audio into Logic has altered the audio

Ok, what step am I missing? When exporting the audio From STP (Sound FX, Foley, ect) to Logic, for some reason when I play the audio in logic, it is no longer synced with the movie and the pitch sounds deeper.

hey thanks, yeah, i figured it out like right after I posted the topic. I was like "hmmm i wonder if the bit resolution and sample rate is it..."...and sure enough it was... But thanks anyways.
