Splitting analog events

I understand how to easily split events from my digital source. But how can i split out clips from video imported from older analog tape?

1) Download MPEG Streamclip, which is free.
2) Drag your file into MPEG Streamclip.
3) <----Start of Event----->
4) Position cursor at the frame where you want the event to start. Click i to set the "in point".
5) Position cursor at the frame where you want the event to end. Click o to set the "out point".
6) Click File/Export Using QuickTime. Choose a codec. If your event is DV, you may want to simply pass the clip through streamclip as DV. If it is MPEG2 or something highly compressed, convert it to Apple Intermediate Codec. (NOTE: for MPEG2 you also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, available online from Apple $20)
7) Optional: You can deinterlace in this step, if you need to. Depends on your target media. Do a test.
8) Give your new event a name. I suggest that you name your clip as follows, because this will provide metadata that allows iMovie to automatically put the event in the right year and month, and allows you to see the time codes while skimming the event withe your cursor (VIEW/DISPLAY TIME CODES)
9) Here is the format for the name:
clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss (let MPEG Streamclip provide the extension, it will be DV or MOV)
where yyyy=year
mm=month in 2 digits
dd=day
remember a space between dd and hh
hh=hour in 24 hour time
mm = minutes
ss = seconds.
10) Additional splits needed on this clip? Go back to step 3.
11) In iMovie, select FILE/IMPORT from file.

  • Splitting an event takes more than 3 min

    Hi,
    I have about 8.000 photos in my library and 2.500 photos in a single event. Now I want to extract a set of pictures from this event and move it in a new event. Is there a faster way doing this than splitting the event before and after the set of pictures? This created 3 events and then I have to move the 3rd event back into the first, the 2nd event is what I want to keep.
    BTW, with over 8.000 pictures in the library, is it normal that splitting an event takes more than 3 minutes?

    Danielle
    Flag the pics you want to move to the new Event and the go Events -> Create Event from Flagged Photos. That will probably be faster.
    BTW, with over 8.000 pictures in the library, is it normal that splitting an event takes more than 3 minutes?
    I wouldn't have thought so, but it might take a while with an Event that has more that 2,500 pics in it. Remember, Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents). So splitting an event literally means creating a folder and moving files to it and so on.

  • Splitting an event with only only clip

    Is it possible to split an event that contains only one clip into two events?
    Documentation indicates that in an event with at least two clips it is possible, but with only one clip selecting a thumbnail where the split is desired leaves the 'split at clip' option under the file menu grayed out.

    If you can find a single frame or group of frames that can be rejected (and are near the point where you want to split), reject them and move to trash. Now you will have two clips, and it can be split into two events.
    If you don't want to lose any frames, best option is Quicktime Pro.

  • Splitting an event

    I have researched this, read the iMovie help, and still cannot figure this out.
    I want to split an event. When I follow the instructions all it does is duplicate the entire event. I am selecting the portion I want split...I go to File>Split event before selected clip. Then all it does it duplicate the complete event.....OR sometimes it will not let me click the "Split event before selected clip" SOmetimes that option is grey and cannot be selected.
    WHat am I doing wrong?

    I am trying to split an event and when I select the clip , the split event selection under file menu is greyed out. Can anyone help me out?
    Are the frames you have selected in this clip located in the "Event" window or the "Project" window? You can only "split" a clip (i.e., a range of frames in a clip) in the "Project" window using this Edit menu option.

  • How do I split Imovie events?  I find the option in File menu and have selected the part of the event that I want to split before, but the option to split is not bolded (allowed) in the File menu.

    I have imported video to iMovie and want to split the event.  I have selected part of the event and when I go to File> Split the event before the selected clip it is not bolded in the menu and it is not an allowed selection.  I had imported directly to an external HD so moved the event to the Mac HD and tried it again. This did not work either.  Any ideas why this option is not available to me???

    Use iMovie to move the events to your Movies folder, otherwise you're can't.

  • Accidentally split 2 events, now "source clip missing" in my project, HELP!

    Ok, so I've been working for weeks on a project, and I accidentally split an event into 2 events. Dumb I know, but I was trying to split a single clip. Anyway, it split the event and made 2 new events. I tried to "undo" but for some reason it didn't work. Now alot of the clips say "source clip missing". I looked in the trash and found my missing original event folder, but it's empty cos all the videos are still in the event, but under the 2 new events. I tried to put the folder back into imovie, I re-merged the 2 split events and renamed it the original name (after someone on a forum suggested this) and nothing works. I am freaking out! It is crazy cos all the video is still there (at least I think it is). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!!

    Thank You Sameer. It worked. Now I can close this issue.

  • Splitting an Event in iPhoto 2011?

    Until just today, I had been using iPhoto 2009 since it first came out.
    I regularly used the "Split" and "Merge" feature to organize batches of photos as Events.
    I was shocked to find the "Split" and "Merge" icons had vanished in iPhoto 2011. What happened to them? Is there any way to get them back?
    If not, how does splitting and merging work now?

    iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
    And you can create keyboard shortcuts for these commands for yourself too...

  • Splitting an Event into two

    I am trying to do exactly what the title says, and searched for it in the user manual. It says you simply select a clip in an event, then choose file > "Split Event Before Selected Clip." I've tried this so many times, by selecting an entire clip, or just clicking between to clips. Nothing works The choice is always greyed out. I am using normal DV footage.
    I am so frustrated, I'm just going to go sleep it off. Hopefully someone can enlighten me of what I'm doing wrong when I get up.
    Thanks

    iMovie 08 may be the worst piece of software ever released by Apple. I have the latest Mac Pro, with 3 gb of RAM, plenty of hard drive space, and I've been using iLife for years. This complete re-write of a great program has produced a non-intuitive piece of crap. I've watched the promotional video several times now to try to understand the rationale for this new software and how to use it. As they basically state in the introduction, "one of our employees shot some video and couldn't produce a 5 minute video in 20 minutes so he re-wrote the application... isn't this great!
    You mean to tell me that because one of their own employees couldn't figure out how to do what most of us do on a daily basis, they re-wrote a great application to fit his needs and perplexed the rest of us????
    Every time I open iMovie 08, a different set of my videos shows up in the project panel. I can't figure out how to split video, delete commercials or other unwanted footage, or add transitions. I'm no dummy, I have several graduate level degrees and I've been using Apple products, as well as all the iterations of iLife for years.
    iMovie 08 is the worst, most non-intuitive application ever to be issued by Apple. Was this produced in Redmond?

  • ICal splits one event into two, how do I fix this?

    I have one weekly repeating event entered.  For the first two weeks it shows up like normal, as one event.  But two weeks later it splits that one event into two different side-by-side bubbles.  I did not alter the event.  Does any one else have this problem?  How can I fix this?

    That is because you are sharing an Apple ID.
    On both phones go to:
    Settings > Facetime > turn off iPhone Cellular Calls
    I would also suggest you check here to make sure your husbands number is not checked on your phone or yours on his:
    Settings > Messages > Send & Receive
    Settings > Facetime
    Otherwise you will get each others Messages and FaceTime calls.
    I recommend that you each get your own Apple IDs if for nothing else than iCloud, iMessage & FaceTime.

  • Split an event into mini-events by date?

    I recently went on a trip to Mexico with a large group, and afterwards I received a DVD with all of the pictures from the trip. Unfortunately the pictures were not split up by date. I would like to do this by the day the pictures were taken. Is there any way iPhoto can split all of the pictures into separate events by the imbedded data in the pictures?

    Select the event and go to the event menu ==> autosplit event
    or open the event and scan up from the bottom until you find a spot where you want to split - select the photo that you want to end the new event and click on the split button - continue up and splitting until you have it like you want
    in the future you can use the iPhoto preferences to do this on import (check the "split items imported from the finder into events" option

  • Anyone know how to split an event?

    I tried the method outlined by Appleman but I receive an alert message that says " Unable to delete rejected clips" So I cannot use his method.
    There has to be a way..?
    or just iMovieHD?

    Select the frames in the Project (Not the Event) where you want the title. There will be a Yellow Border around them. Then select Edit/Split Clip. Drag your title onto the clip. This way the footage is still moving.
    If you prefer not to have the footage moving on your title, drag the yellow border in your Project, (not Event) from the beginning of the clip to the point where you want the Title, and select EDIT/SPLIT CLIP.
    Now, move your cursor to the last frame of the first clip and select EDIT/ADD FREEZE FRAME. You will have a still image there and you can drop a title on it.

  • Multiple analog events counted and recorded to file

    I have this VI that I created where Ch 5 is attached to a reed switch on a door and counts how many times the door is opened and writes a date and time stamp to file each time and also updates the numeric counter on the front panel.  I would like to add 4 more switches with the same functionality and have them all write to the same file in different columns.  I have tried a number of different approaches to make this happen but can figure out what I’m missing.  Any thought on how I could add the same function with more switches?  Eventually I would like to be able to not only record when the door is open but for how long it stays open for.  Thank you.

    It is true that local variables are not the most efficient communication method and they are not recomended to pass information among loops, mainly because they can create horrible reace condition errors. However, in this case I only read information from the local variables (except from the stop button, which should not be a problem either), so race conditions will not be a problem. Still, that's why a "more elegant solution" probably exists.
    Also, I used a flat sequence structure to initialize the controls before execution and to force the initialization to happen before enything else. I guess you can use is to initialize the 0 constant outside the top while loop (even though I doubt there will be a rece condition there, it might e the only possible source for any).
    About how to display only the total time, you should be able to do that by playing a littile with the shift registers and the select function. For example, what I did was to show the Elapsed Time.vi output if the boolean controls are on, and show the shift register value if they are off. Instead, you can simply add a second Select function on each elapsed time "circuit" so that the indicators will show the shift register value only when the boolean controls are off.

  • Is there a way to split clips in the Event browser? (audio-synch related)

    It seems there is no way to split an event-clip (a clip that appears in the Event browser). You can split Events--but only if they consist of more than one clip. And then you can only split them between two clips. People who have transferred analog video tapes (e.g., Video8) to their computers with the help of iMovie end up with Events that are the same length as their video tapes. So this usually means 2-hour events (consisting of one clip). But iMovie has a synchronization problem for such DV files. This problem would be mitigated by having shorter events. Hence the desire to split events. I thought a read somewhere a workaround for splitting event-clips, but if was a few months ago. I wouldn't think there is any reason we cannot split event clips, other than a preference for non-destructive editing. But a bit of destruction may be worthwhile if it improves synchronization. Does anyone know a way to split clips in the Event browser?
