Splitting clips in FCE?

i feel stupid asking this - how do you split clips?

Do a search for subclips in the Final Cut Express User Manual, which can be found in the Help menu in Final Cut Express.

  • Splitting a large video file into smaller segments/clips using FCE

Is there a way to split a large FCE / iMovie Captured event into smaller segments/clips.
Am attempting to convert my home videos ( Analog: 8mm) into iMovie clips.
Used a ADS Pyro that converts my composite signal ( RCA: Yellow+Red/White) to a digital signal via Firewire using the iMovie capture. However, this creates a single 2 hour file that takes approx 26Gb because there is now DV information.
I would like to (a) Break this into smaller segments/clips then (b) Change the date on these.

What I want to do is to break up my 2 hours video into smaller chunks then burn the good chunks as raw footage ( AVI/MOV) onto backup data DVDs. Then export all the chunks into compresssed files (MPEG-4?) and save these on another data DVD.
Avoid to compress. Save as quicktime movie.

  • Spliting clips in FCE.

    Dear members:
How can a clip be split in two or more clips using FCE ?
I have just recently moved to FCE from iMovie and this was a rather simple procedure to accomplish in iMovie. I have searched but haven't been able to find instructions on how to do it.
    Thank you in advance,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi, Piero:
Thank for the many pointers and helpful tips you shared. I have found them extremely helpful. I do have some other questions:
I understand your point about the lack of ability to free up unused disk
space in FCE, while in iMovie it is standard and easy practice. I think this is
the result of the FCE design approach: a cut down version of FCP where the
FCP Media Manager (that to my knowledge addresses this issue) is
completely removed... while a simpler iMovie-like subset of its functions
should have been left in FCE.
I would be willing to consider an upgrade to FCP if this will address the limitations I have found in FCE. However, it would be important for me to be able to import all the footage I have already captured in FCE into FCP. Is it possible for FCP to import projects directly from FCE in a simple manner ? Do you know if Apple offers an upgrade path for FCE owners to move up to FCP or Final Cut Studio ?
Anyway, the answer to your question: would it be possible to capture the
footage in iMovie and then transfer it to FCE ? is yes, as long as you accept
some limits and take some precautions.
    Limits:
    - no time code is recorded by iMovie; as a result FCE won't be able to
    recapture project in the future, if this is a point for you;
    - if you simply import iMovie clips into FCE, in FCE you are forced to render
    all audio before any editing.
In order to avoid audio rendering you must first convert the .dv clips (as
imported from iMovie) into the .mov format that is native to FCE: you can
do it with QuickTime Pro, MPEG Streamclip or iMovie itself using the
Export/Movie to QuickTime Movie (NOT DV stream) and applying the
correct compression (DV-PAL or DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), frame rate (25 or
29,97) and audio options (uncompressed/linear PCM, stereo, 48 kHz, 16
    bit).
    Piero
The solution above sounds very time consuming and I would prefer to maintain the timecode in the captured footage. From your explanation it seems FCP with its media manager would be the perfect solution to address my individual needs.
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

  • Is there a way to split clips in the Event browser? (audio-synch related)

It seems there is no way to split an event-clip (a clip that appears in the Event browser). You can split Events--but only if they consist of more than one clip. And then you can only split them between two clips. People who have transferred analog video tapes (e.g., Video8) to their computers with the help of iMovie end up with Events that are the same length as their video tapes. So this usually means 2-hour events (consisting of one clip). But iMovie has a synchronization problem for such DV files. This problem would be mitigated by having shorter events. Hence the desire to split events. I thought a read somewhere a workaround for splitting event-clips, but if was a few months ago. I wouldn't think there is any reason we cannot split event clips, other than a preference for non-destructive editing. But a bit of destruction may be worthwhile if it improves synchronization. Does anyone know a way to split clips in the Event browser?

    Hello Apple Community,
I would really appreciate the help.  I am half way through editing a wedding video and my split clip function just stopped working.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?  Thank you for the help!

This is happening to me as well, Keith.
Airport Utility can not discover the Airport Express. I've reinstalled AU, as well as pulling the Airport Express from power and plugging it back in. I have not "reset" it yet, as I'm hoping there is a solution without having to lose all my Wifi settings.

  • HELP!!!! Problems with saving/exporting split clips in Premiere Elements 13

I have Premiere Elements 13.  I have a 2 hr mp4 file I have set up into 8 split clips and want to save each split clip as it's own mp4 file so I can import it into Adobe Presenter as video for each particular slide.  I need very specific steps as how to accurately select each split clip and save it or export it as it's own mp4 file.  I was given instructions that instructed me to add these gray bars around the clip I wanted to save/export but I am unable to identify how to get those gray bars to activate around the clip.  When I save/export it is saving the entire 2 hr mp4 vs the individual clip.

I have already replied to your latest request for further details on setting the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar.

    a. setting the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar

  • Splitting clips problem. Corrupt project?

I have a 3 hour 15 minute project that I finished editing (down from 6+ hours of footage).  Aside from iMovie starting to run quite slow by the time I was adding chapters and titles, everything went well.  After 11 hours of exporting to Quicktime, I split the movie file in half and burned two DVDs.  Everything looks good, except I noticed a section that I accidentally placed the sound off from the video.  An easy fix for just that section, or so I thought.
Back in iMovie, I get the spinning color wheel everytime I move or click anywhere.  But the real problem is that I no longer split clips ... at least not where I intend to.  I stop the playhead where I want to split the clip, and instead of splitting it there, iMovie is splitting the clip anywhere from a half second to 3 seconds after the point I choose.
I'm guessing the project is corrupt since I can create a new project, drag in a clip and it splits just fine.  And if I pull in clips from other events into the corrupt project, the splitting gets screwed up again.
I'm hoping there's a solution rather than having to create a new project.  I used a lot of transitions, and I want to keep the timing exact so I can easily replace the affected portions of the movie file rather than waiting another 11 hours for everything to export.
And yes, I tried all the usual deleting of preferences, moving the project out of the movies folder, etc., etc. and it's still an issue.

    Hi Flagmaker82,
If you are having difficulties splitting a clip as you describe, you may want to try placing the playhead where you want the split, control clicking the clip and select Split Clip from the shortcut menu. The process is similar to what is described for trimming a clip in this article -

  • Splitting Clips within an Event

I have searched everywhere for how to do this but come up short. I have old camera clips in .avi format that I have imported. I want to split portions of a single clip into new and separate events but the split clip and split clip before commands are greyed out. Can I do this or do I really have to create a separate project for each clip segment in order to separate these video segments. Final Cut Express wont seem to import these .avi clips at all, so I can't try doing it there either.

If you highlight the clip and drag the sliders to the middle (or wherever) and 'remove selection', does that work?

  • How do you split clips in the event viewer in iMovie '11?

I'm using iMovie '11 and have imported a very long movie (over an hour from VCR Tape) that I want to split into multiple events, however the "Split Clip" option is grayed out. How can I split a large event into smaller events?

I have discovered a round-about way to split large events from comments in this forum, so apologies, and or thanks to other posters.
You can split events by deleting (and discarding) a single frame at the point where you want to split the two clips. It's processor intensive (takes a while to do), but it works.
1.) In the Event Viewer, click to select where you want to split the event.
2.) Drag the yellow handles to make the selection as small as possible (1 frame?). If you drag the thumbnail display slider to the left to show only 1/2 second intervals, it helps when selecting a single frame.
3.) Right click and select "Reject Selection". The clip is now split.
4.) When you've completed all of your clip splitting, select "Show: Rejected Only" at the bottom of the Event Viewer to show all of the rejected frames.
5.) Click on "Move Rejected to Trash". This operation could take a while.
    That should be it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Splitting clips for copying

I'm trying to create a smaller project (about 3 minutes) from a larger clip (45 minutes). I use the "split clip at playhead" command at the beginning and end to trim a smaller clip, but find that "get info" for the new, supposedly smaller clip is still showing a size of 9 gigs (the full size of the original clip). When I try to copy and paste the "smaller" clip into the new project the program freezes, apparently because it's still registering the size of the longer clip, maybe not even recognizing the smaller clip. I've tried renaming the smaller clip, which hasn't worked. I may have to re-download from my camera only the footage that I want in the smaller project, but I'd like to avoid that.
    Thanks!

You just have to live with that (or re-import). iMovie is a non-destructive editor, which means you should be able to go back to your full length clip at any time.

  • Splitting Clips

I just can't figure this out. I have a project that currently is made up of 6-8 clips. One clip is rather long, 10 minutes or so. I want to shorten this clip by taking out some dead space in a few sections. Just chopping seconds out of the clip. I can trim to my hearts desire and that's cool. But the Split Clip never becomes an option in my edit menu and I cannot find anything anywhere on how to do this.
Imagine a long clip and you don't want to trim in/out. You simply want to take a razor blade (ala FCP) and make a couple cuts, then delete the offending clip and throw in a transition. Should be easy enough but I'm pulling my hair out????

I have a similar situation. This is designed for new footage from digital sources that has a nice start/stop point to break up clips every time you start and stop the camera.
I am converting about 100 hours of 5-10 year old Hi 8mm analog footage that is in 1-2 hour chunks. The borrowed digital camcorder I am using as a bridge (my newer minDV camera does not have an analog input) breaks the footage into 30 minute clips.
On a newer camera, this footage would end up being 10-30 manageable clips. I can't figure out how to split the clips (actually events I guess) in the events library either. One of the 30 minute "clips" could cross 5 "events," so it would be very handy to have the events separated in my events library rather than only being able to do so in the project library.
    Any Ideas?

  • Split Clip is not accurate.

I've been adding a Freeze Frame to sports video in order to highlight (via PhotoShop) a specific player. Sometimes, not always, the freeze frame is correct but the split created around the freeze frame is about a half second later. In other words the freeze does not match-up with the split. Other times this all works just fine. When it's wrong I try to just do a split clip to the correct time thinking that I can drag the modified freeze frame back to the split I just made, but iMove won't perform a split there at all. Any ideas?

This command is only available if your Event has more than one clip. It will split the Event between two clips.
If you are not sure how many clips are in your Event, move the Thumbnail slider to the right  until you get a single thumbnail per clip.

  • Split clip of a picture in picture

    Question,
When using picture and picture or a cutaway, I would like to split the top part into sections. Using the split clip command on it splits the lower main video, but not the one on top.
I am attempting to edit video from 2 cameras of the same event into one movie. I also would like to keep the sync intact through the entire thing and not have to resync each camera change by hand. I know Final Cut Express and pro can do this sort of thing, but everything costs money...
There is a neat trick with a cutaway or picture in picture- you can open the clip editor and adjust the opacity from 0% (invisible so you see what is underneath) to 100% (so you see only the top video). So the idea is to use the cutaway to paste the camera 2 ontop of camera 1, sync them once, then split the top video and delete sections or it (or reduce it opacity to 0%), thereby showing the video underneath...
    any ideas?

Provide the full path to the picture file. Or if you're going to use a relative path, make sure it's relative to your current working directory.
I don't know what you mean by a "local" file or by "my workspace".

  • Transitions between split clips don't work properly

If I split a clip in the project area, then put a transition between the two new clips, the transition doesn't work properly. It is most obvious with the Cross Dissolve, which doesn't work at all. Some of the others sort of look like they are working, but if you look closely, they are not working correctly- i.e. not in the same way that transitions between two clips dragged separately to the project area from the events area work.
Any one else notice this, or better yet, have a fix?

    OK- I discovered a work-around.
In the project area if you select the split part following the transition, Cut it (Command x) then Paste it (Command v) back in the proper place, the transition works properly. Usually cutting and pasting the following half of a split clip fixes the transition, but sometimes I have to cut and paste both the part before the transition and the part after it to get things to work right.

  • Split clip with iMovie 09

Importing from a Mini DV Camera,I would like to split my mowie in different event, for instance one for each day. After selecting a part of a clip in my event browser I go in < Menu File <Split clip. But this selection is not active. How to do ?

You need to Delete a single frame, and then trash rejected clips. Note that this will turn .dv files into .mov files, and there will be some quality loss. Use mpegstreamclip (see other postings in this forum) to maintain quality by converting interlaced video to progressive.
