Splitting events to speed things up

I followed the simple instructions of marking a clip as the first clip in a new event folder. But under File.....the clip split function is gray...nothing. I tried it every way, including removing audio from the clip, still nothing.

This option is only available when any clip OTHER THAN THE FIRST is selected in an EVENT WINDOW. If the first clip or no clip at all is selected in the event window, then the option will remain grayed out.

  • Captivate 4 is now working very slowly - how can I speed things up?

    Hi,
My elearning course is now 13,641 KB and is starting to work very slowly. I have deleted all unused items from the library. Is there anything else I can do to speed things up? I don't want to split the project up at this stage.
    Thanks.

Did the slowness begin when you moved your Captivate project files onto another drive?
You need to be aware that you should always ONLY work on Captivate project files that are sitting on your own local hard drives, never those stored on a LAN or other drive.  Too many issues arise from working on non-local project files.

  • Merge Events / Split Events buttons missing

The new iPhoto has removed two buttons I use frequently: Merge events and Split events. When I go for a weekend trip, I want all of the photos to be in the same event.
The Merge option and the Auto Split option is in the menu. But it'd be nice to have it on the control bar at the bottom again, as it was before.
How about an option in the Preferences to put things in the control bar?
Please send feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

I also missed the buttons to Merge and Split events which I do frequently. I did find a keyboard shortcut for Splitting Events is the S key. Simply select the photos you want to split off into an event and then press S. So, I thought they must have made M a shortcut for merge, but no, they didn't. I will also send feedback to Apple regarding this. We should have a way to customize the bar with these options.

  • How do i split events when Split Events Before Selected Clips is not even highlighted

iMovie question - how do i split events when Split Events Before Selected Clips is not even highlighted?  I just puchased this new iMac yesterday and i am still trying to figure things out!

You should start by having a read of the online manuals and correct forums.
This forum is for iOS (iPads and iPhones).
There are plenty of great resources on the Apple website,
but try to search for iMovie Mac.

  • Can you turn off optimization while splitting events?

I want to move all my many thousands of iPhoto clips down to intermix with my other clips stored on an external drive. All seemed well, I drug them down like the apple tech told me to, but they appeared in a single event, which is bad enough, and the sound is missing, which also *****, but I've found that if I split the EVENTS back into their original date periods the sound comes back. (And I have to do that anyway so they will sort/intermix properly in the event area anyway which was my original goal.)
The PROBLEM is that every time I choose "split event before clip", it takes a minute or so for imovie to OPTIMIZE MOVIES after splitting the event.  Since I'm really not planning on doing anything other than splitting these **** events for the next month or so, is there any way to turn that feature off for a while?
For that matter is there any way to speed this process up? Any way at all?  All the movies are still in iPhoto, if there was a better way to do it I would.  I would just export them and import them directly, but then I lose all the original dates (Though I'm starting to wonder if that would be faster.)  I would be willing to buy external software if that would help.
And yes, I realize I could just drag them all down event by event, but that would take longer, because I believe I have to first create an event to drag them into. If that is incorrect let me know.  But at least on my computer, creating the event takes just as long as splitting the event, so this method saves me half the time.
It seems like there has got to be a better way to do this.
Or is there any way to split at multiple points?

    Flip the mute switch.

  • Split Event Problems

I would be very grateful if I could get some help. I am trying to split an event. I followed the help videos and selected a frame, went to file and tried to select "Split Event Before Selected Clip". However, it is always grayed out and thus I can't select. can anyway give some guidance on what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks

    Two things to try.
    1) Make sure the event is selected in the Event Source List (I think it will be in blue if it is selected.) Sometimes the Project will have the focus, not the event.
    2) Right click on the clip after the split point and Select the Entire Clip.
Now try to split before the selected clip.

  • Trying to speed things up...

    Hi
I have a Macbook pro which was bought around Nov 2009 (Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3).
I have recenlty upgraded to Lion.
I am working as a professional photographer and I spend a long time editing photos in Aperture 3 which I recently ugraded from Aperture 2.
I am having real issues with Aperture 3's speed. It works ok for about 10 minutes and then every change that I try to make causes the dreaded wheel to whirl and I have to wait for 20-30 seconds before it becomes operational again. Obviously I cannot work like this or editing will take me twice as long.
I know that Aperture has always been a 'hungry' programme that takes up a lot of the computer's capability and so I always try to shut down all other programmes whilst using Aperture.
In terms of Aperture Libraries I am working with two:
    1) an archive and is kept on an external hard drive
    2) The 'Live Library' which contains only the images I am currently working on - this is on the computer's hard drive but contacin only about 500-1000 images at any one time.
    So, my questions are:
    - how can I speed things up?
    - should I be looking to upgrade my computer and if so what to? (iMac? Mac Pro?) (will a desktop make life easier?)
Your help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Tom,
Your first problem is not enough RAM to run Lion and Aperture. Lion needs more RAM than Snow Leopard.
I would upgrade to 8GB from your current 4GB, you should see immediate improvements in speed.
I agree SSD is the way to go for your startup drive. The cost per GB, however, may limit your storage options.
If you don't use the optical drive, you can install the SSD in the optical bay, using an optibay enclosure or datadoubler.
The HD stays in the hard drive bay and is used for your data files.
Go to OWC and look over their upgrade options for your model MBP. Watch the install videos and see if you are up for doing the install yourself.

  • Splitting events

  • My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • IPhoto '11 v. 9.2.3 bug when splitting events containing flagged and duplicate versions of same photo in Event.

    UPDATE:
Okay, I don't know how to delete this - so I'm just saying that after sending this, I found Terrance's reply to a similar post (3/3/12).  I didn't realize iPhoto had been changed so that the "master" controls duplicates.  I do understand how to export, et cetera .... and I do use albums also!  I just really want the duplicate photos to NOT be in the general Events.  Trust me, I have a good reason!
Thank you for your (previous) help!
    ~h
Okay, when I created this User Name, I didn't foresee this situation.  I'm pretty sure this is a real bug - and maybe someone can let the appropriate programmer know....
Essentially, I'm organizing my 2012 iPhoto library and am trying to get around the rule that a photo can only be in one Event.  I flagged the photos I want to keep where they are - AND - be grouped separately.
Then in Flagged, I duplicated all.  Then I unflag the orginal files.
Then I modified the duplicated (version 2 or version 3) files.
So, in the original events, there are the two versions of some photos.
Opening one of the events, I select a couple of photos and "split".
Split event does get created, but it has no photos.
Photos and duplicated photos remain in original event.
I'm quitting now - before I lose everything.....!
(I'll back up the library and try again later.........!)
and jsut for the fn of it, I'm adding that I find it strange that I'd have to manually click "abc-check" -- that spellcheck doesn't run automatically.   --I guess it annoys others?

    First Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that doesn't help apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Leopard install says it will take 24+ hours... how can I speed things up?

I encountered some issues with my previous installation of Leopard, so I decided to format, and re-install it.
I start the installation using "Erase and Install" and after the disk verifies, I start the installation. Only problem is, the installation's giving me an estimated time remaining of 26 hours.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
That first estimate can be very erroneous. It should quickly settle down to a more reasonable number.

  • Will a clean install speed things up?

My iMac G5 is running slow, yes its older, but I'm wondering if the real problem is the massive amount of crap installed on it? So I'm considering a clean install.
The catch is the user accounts. I want to keep my media and documents, but I don't want to bring all the program baggage back with it. (The list of installed apps in the system profiler is endless! I thought I threw a lot of that stuff away ages ago but its still there).
    2 Questions:
    1. Is my assumption that doing a clean install will speed things up?
    2. If so, what's the easiest way to go about it and keep the accounts' important info? (I can easliy reinstall programs.)
    Thanks

    Hi jsunem;
Probably not. I take it by a "clean" install you are referring to what Apple calls the Erase & Install. If you are willing to forego restoring anything that is currently on your system then maybe. If you bring back anything odds are it will run exactly like it is now.

  • Would this speed things up even more?

I recently upgraded to the ATI video card on my Mac Pro, and as indicated by many others on this forum it REALLY helped. In fact, it's made a huge difference and now I think I'll purchase Aperture.
Now, I've got the original stock graphics card left-over. Question: can that card be installed as a second video card, to exclusively power a second monitor? Sorry for the ignorance; prior to Aperture, nothing I did on my various Macs ever really taxed the GPU, so I was always contented with the stock card and therefore am behind the times on the subject.
Right now, I've got a 24" Dell as my primary and a 23" Apple cinema display as my second. I like using the 23" Apple monitor to show images full-screen in Aperture, keeping my library/grid view on the primary 24" monitor.
Would plugging in the second monitor into the second video card, and working in a one-monitor setup in Aperture speed things up? Then Aperture would only only have to power that one display, but I'd still have the second running decently enough for Finder folders, itunes, IM, etc.

while not this exactly, i did try to install a 2nd video card in my G5 and run 3 monitors ...
this works in everything except aperture ... i think i remember reading here somewhere that aperture CANNOT utilize multiple vid cards (???) ...
so what you want is to use 2 cards to power 2 monitors but only have aperture run on one ??? interesting proposition ... i tried to just have aperture on one display - that is i disabled my second one to see if it made a dramatic difference - i must say i DID NOT notice any difference between the x800 running 1 or 2 screens under aperture ... this was with canon 5D RAW files ~ 12MP ... so, i have removed my 2nd vid card and run 2x23" on just the x800 and am PERFECTLY content with the performance ...
i guess that the answer to your question will be only determined by trying it out ... as the definition of "decently enough" can only be made by you as the user ...

  • Split Events

so- splitting events is supposed to be as easy as clicking a clip in the event, and selecting "split clip" from the edit menu. this option is grayed out. what am i missing?

To split Events that you brought in from tape:
    1) In iMovie/Preferences, make sure there is a check mark next to Display Time as HH:MM:SS:Frames
    2) It helps to move the Thumbnail Slider at the bottom of the Event pand all the way to the left (1/2 second per thumbnail)
    3) Select 1 Frame that is at the point where you want to split the events. Select the 1 frame so that the yellow border is around it. Right-click (or control click) and select Reject Selection.
    4) At the bottom of the event pane, select the View that says "Rejected Clips only". You should see your 1 frame. Press the button at the top right of the Event Pane that says "Move Rejected Clips to Trash" and let it percolate.
    5) Now, you have two clips. Select the second clip. Now choose FILE/SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP
