Splitting events

When i attempt to split an event, (split event before selected clip) it seems work and a new event is listed for a moment then disappears, leaving me with an apparently unsplit event where i started

Yours must be broken.
Mine works fine.

  • IPhoto '11 v. 9.2.3 bug when splitting events containing flagged and duplicate versions of same photo in Event.

    UPDATE:
Okay, I don't know how to delete this - so I'm just saying that after sending this, I found Terrance's reply to a similar post (3/3/12).  I didn't realize iPhoto had been changed so that the "master" controls duplicates.  I do understand how to export, et cetera .... and I do use albums also!  I just really want the duplicate photos to NOT be in the general Events.  Trust me, I have a good reason!
Thank you for your (previous) help!

Okay, when I created this User Name, I didn't foresee this situation.  I'm pretty sure this is a real bug - and maybe someone can let the appropriate programmer know....
Essentially, I'm organizing my 2012 iPhoto library and am trying to get around the rule that a photo can only be in one Event.  I flagged the photos I want to keep where they are - AND - be grouped separately.
Then in Flagged, I duplicated all.  Then I unflag the orginal files.
Then I modified the duplicated (version 2 or version 3) files.
So, in the original events, there are the two versions of some photos.
Opening one of the events, I select a couple of photos and "split".
Split event does get created, but it has no photos.
Photos and duplicated photos remain in original event.
I'm quitting now - before I lose everything.....!
(I'll back up the library and try again later.........!)
and jsut for the fn of it, I'm adding that I find it strange that I'd have to manually click "abc-check" -- that spellcheck doesn't run automatically.   --I guess it annoys others?

    First Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that doesn't help apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Split Events

so- splitting events is supposed to be as easy as clicking a clip in the event, and selecting "split clip" from the edit menu. this option is grayed out. what am i missing?

To split Events that you brought in from tape:
    1) In iMovie/Preferences, make sure there is a check mark next to Display Time as HH:MM:SS:Frames
    2) It helps to move the Thumbnail Slider at the bottom of the Event pand all the way to the left (1/2 second per thumbnail)
    3) Select 1 Frame that is at the point where you want to split the events. Select the 1 frame so that the yellow border is around it. Right-click (or control click) and select Reject Selection.
    4) At the bottom of the event pane, select the View that says "Rejected Clips only". You should see your 1 frame. Press the button at the top right of the Event Pane that says "Move Rejected Clips to Trash" and let it percolate.
    5) Now, you have two clips. Select the second clip. Now choose FILE/SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP

  • IMovie 11 Splitting Events!!

How could this software not allow me to split EVENTS!! I want an event to be split not the project.. Any advice???

Use the Edit/Split Clip command to split events. Events can be split between two clips.
If you need to split in the middle of a long clip, I recommend using MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 to split the clip.
It is possible to split a long clip in iMovie, but it takes longer and is prone to system crashes.

  • Splitting event in imovie

I am attempting to split an event as per the imovie help menu. However, when I choose file after clicking on the clip that I want to become the first clip of the new event, "Split event before selected clip" is greyed out - not an option. What am I missing?

I am attempting to split an event as per the imovie help menu. However, when I choose file after clicking on the clip that I want to become the first clip of the new event, "Split event before selected clip" is greyed out - not an option. What am I missing?
Are you selecting the first clip in the Event window? If so, that is why the menu option is grayed out. Try selecting any other clip and see if the option becomes active. If so, then the application is working properly and your work flow is at fault (i.e., need to know what you are really trying to do here). If not, then you may have a problem in your installation of iMovie '08 or some sort of corruption in clips or clip references.

  • Merge Events / Split Events buttons missing

The new iPhoto has removed two buttons I use frequently: Merge events and Split events. When I go for a weekend trip, I want all of the photos to be in the same event.
The Merge option and the Auto Split option is in the menu. But it'd be nice to have it on the control bar at the bottom again, as it was before.
How about an option in the Preferences to put things in the control bar?
Please send feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

I also missed the buttons to Merge and Split events which I do frequently. I did find a keyboard shortcut for Splitting Events is the S key. Simply select the photos you want to split off into an event and then press S. So, I thought they must have made M a shortcut for merge, but no, they didn't. I will also send feedback to Apple regarding this. We should have a way to customize the bar with these options.

  • Split event before selected clip grayed out

When editing movies, the option "split event before selected clip" is always grayed out...can anyone help???

The reason to split an event is to make the footage easier to find when you start making projects. For example, if you shot a birthday party on the afternoon and a football game at night, they might import into the same Event (based on date). You could select the first clip of football and right-click/Split Event Before Selected Clip. Now you have two Events...a birthday party event and a football event.
This has nothing to do with sharing and projects.
A single project can use clips from many events.
And you can make many projects from the clips in a single event.
The project does not duplicate the footage that is stored in the Event, it just references it.
A project is really a text file that is a recipe for building a movie. The recipe is executed when you "Share" or render your movie.
For example the Project file might say
"Look in Event XYZ and grab frames 1 through 200 from the third clip.
Add an audio track from iTunes, and mute the audio track from the Event.
Add a title that says this or that.
Apply some color correction in these parameters.
Now look at Event QPR and grab the second and third clips, but trim off the last 10 frames."
    Etc.
    Hope this helps.
If you want to share multiple movies from an Event, you just create multiple projects that reference the event. Choose the frames you need by dragging and dropping. And then share the projects.
No need to get QuickTime Pro involved.

  • Split event is grayed out

I have followed the iMovie '08 Help on how to Split an Event into two and each time I've highlighted the clip that I want to be first and go to FILE, the Split Event before Selected clip is grayed out! What am I doing wrong?
I wanted to show screen shots of the problem but can't add attachments.

I am having the same problem, have you figured out the solution? My movie got too big and keeps shutting down the program so I really need to split the event but don't want to lose all of my hard work! Please anyone help!

  • Why won't "Split events before selected clip"  work?

In IMovie'11, when I select a clip from an event and want to split it, I go to File, and the option "Split events before selected clip" is not highlighted, so I cannot do that task! Has anyone else had that problem? In fact if I select a clip in an event and go to Edit, and to the option "Split event" it also is not hightlighted so I cannot do that either! This is very frustrating as I am trying to organize my videos in order to burn them to a DVD.

Oops sorry - I'm new to iMovie, except for a short one I did a couple years back from stills.  I only take the occasional one with my p&s camera - so it's mp4's - but now I've got a project I want to do for my son and his band.  So, another learning curve
Yes I've been trying to split clips in the events browser.  And sometimes the "split event" option come up black, but most times it's greyed out.  Sometimes I even get the black and greyed-out in different places within the same event.  I can't find any logic behind it, it appears to be random.
I haven't come across anything called "the timeline" - so don't know what that is.  I searched it just now in iMovie but nothing came up.

  • When I plug my Ipad2 to my Imac, it does not sync all my photos from my Itunes library. It also splits events and picks what it wants to sync. How do I get all my photos to sync with Ipad2?

When I sync my Ipad2 with my Imac, it does not sync all the photos. It seems to pick & choose what it wants to sync and also splits events. How can I set it to sync all photos so both libraries are the same?

Can't help you with the sync problem but the splitting of events was supposedly fixed with the iPhoto 9.1.3 updater.
This is from the download page:
This update fixes a problem that could cause some events merged in iPhoto to be split back into multiple events on iOS devices after being synced.
So update iPhoto to 9.1.3 and re-sync.  If you already have updated to that version then I'm at a loss.

  • Unable to split event in iMovie 08

    1. I highlighted the Event in the Event Library
    2. Then I clicked on a clip within that event.
    3. A yellow adjustable frame appeared or about the clip
    4. I went to File & found the "Split Event Before Selected Clip" faded - not available.
    5. I tried clicking on "Edit" & clicked on "Select entire Clip which resulted in all clips within Event selected
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thx

I tried this and still not working. I have selected the clip and put it in a project. then in the event library view I have selected the clip, I go to file and the "split Event before selected clip" is still not an available option.
It is not necessary to place a clip in the "Project" window to split an event. This is only required if you want to "split" a clip into two or more parts for editing purposes. The "Split Event Before Selected Clip" option works from the "Events" window, creates a secondary event automatically using the same name with a numeric suffix, moves the proper files to the new event area, and reset the "Event" window to the new event. However, am not sure if this is an "Advanced Tool" option or not since I leave mine set "dual function" at all times.

  • Can't Split Events

I've noticed several post about the inability to split events in iMovie '08. I've yet to find a proper solution. Several users have posted work-a-rounds but that doesn't seem right. If the feature is there why can't we use it? I'm importing multiple different events from a single VHS tape and it would be extremely beneficial to have a simple way to split the imported video. Any ideas?

    wohoooo.. a Terminal guy, a Unix-man!
Absolutely a Unix man! I dabbled in Solaris and Linux before (at school), and was a huge fan of NeXT before it did a reverse-takeover of Apple , which made me an Apple fan by default. Don't get me wrong, I adore the UI, but having the Terminal with the UNIX standard command makes my old Unix knowledge still very useful..
I NEVER touch the Terminal, I'm an Apple User since '86, I prefer GUI ... and use a context-menu add-on to create symLinks by a mouse-click .. using that for the 'trick' to use ext. drives as location for iM Project library.. (discribed on my site. http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/im08tricks ) ... but cross-account-linking.. ? hmmm, isn't that a 'bit' beyond concept of a multiuser OS...? ok, that's a philosophical question..
You might get thrown by the owner of that symlink - the owner of /Accounts is admin, so I did the hacking from the admin account. /Volumes/Accounts/jgatica is still owned and writable by the jgatica account, that's where it matters. I do this so I could blow away the boot partition and still have my entire account after rebuilding the boot partition (I used to fool around with prerelease OSes when I had an Apple ADC account). I am not worried that the jgatica account cannot delete the symlink, it's probably better that way anyway. In any event, this has worked for me for ages, so I left it like it is.
Thanks for your iMovie link! Nice to have some power-user tips for iMovie.
to tell Apple (they don't read here...), tell direct:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html
Thanks for the feedback link, I'll give them a note. So, in your case, you just transplanted the project directory /Accounts/{account}/Movies/iMovie Projects, and pointing to an external drive with a symlink? OK, that sounds like much the same scenario that I have... other than the symlink problem, it sure would be nice if iMovie had a preference to where to put its database..

  • Unable to "Split Event before selected clip"

First... I've read the other two threads that I could find by searching these forums and the recommendations there didn't help.
I have several large DV (avi) files that I imported previously from a camera. I imported them (one at a time) into iMovie 08 - each tape/avi file as a separate "event". As you can probably guess, the tapes/event were all imported as a single large clip each. I then split the large clips into separate clips by removing/rejecting a small amount of video between clips that I wanted to separate.
So far so good. Now I have 1 event for each 'tape' still and a bunch of separate clips within each 'event'. Now what I want to do is separate out each of the individual clips into separate events.
I've selected many different clips (the first, the last, several in between...) by right-clicking and selecting "select entire clip" (which it does) but the File>Split Event Before Selected Clip menu item is ALWAYS grayed out and will not let me do it.
    Why?
I imported some new video (AVCHD) from a new canon hf10 and it allowed me to use this functionality just fine.
Is there something about the avi/dv file format that won't allow you to split events into multiple events?
From everything I've read, this appears to be a bug in iMovie 08 as everything seems to point to this supposedly working when doing what I've done here...
    HELP!
    TIA.

Believe the problem is caused by you trying to split a single clip into two events, all work done in imovie is non destructive.
I suspect the easiest workaround would be to split the event clip in QT.

  • Split Events Into Clips

I'm importing DV video into iMovie that is recovered from a reformatted drive, and all of the original camera info like dates and such are gone. The video is intact with sound; however, iMovie cannot tell when the camera goes on and off, and each file is imported into one big clip. Some parts of the video should be separated into separate events, as they are not related, and I cannot find a way to split the event.
Any suggestions? The files are .dv, and I don't really want to resort to Quicktime to separate the video to organize it.

I had the same "one big clip" issue when importing old 8mm/Hi8 via a Sony camcorder last weekend. I couldn't split events because there was only "one" clip to work with. Our local Apple store showed me another way that should work for you, too:
    1. Locate where two scenes change using the little red vertical line.
    2. Click in that area and shrink the yellow editing frame down to its minimum size (I was able to get it down to 0.1 seconds or about three frames worth).
    3. Delete that short piece and the clip should be split there.
After I went through my imports doing that, it was easy to use the "Split events" function to rearrange everything.
    Hope this is useful...

  • IMovie 08: Split Event Before Selected Clip

    Hi,
I select the clip that I want to split at but when I go to the File menu "Split Event Before Selected Clip" remains disabled, what else am I missing?
    Thank you...

No experience with 08, but with 09, the "Split event ..." item is not available if the event is comprised of only a single clip. You must first (1) select a single frame where you want the clip to be split, then second (2) throw the rejected clips into the trash (which can be slow, depending upon event length). Only then can you split the event clips. Silly.
If you have multiple splits in an event, perform step (1) at all desired locations first, then do step (2).
