Spoken Podcast compression problem

For the podcast I host I've always edited the audio in Soundtrack Pro and then imported the AIFF audio file into iTunes to compress using the AAC Spoken Podcast preset. This worked great for years but ever since iTunes 9 was released the audio sounds garbled after compression. The other AAC presets still produce excellent sounding audio it's just the Spoken Podcast preset that seems to be broken. I submitted a bug report but wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem or if they know of a fix.

Thank you Arun,
There was no selective deletion on the cube.Roll up is included before the compress process in the chain.
Please find the info below from the table we can understand that DM is going fine.
The latest request in the cube is 1109217 and last compressed req is 1094040
Please find the table result for the cube

  • File Compression Problem

    Hello all,
I'm having a strange file compression problem with CS5 on our new Mac Pro.  We purchased the Mac Pro to scan and process images, but the JPEGs and GIFs we create from this computer are much larger than they should be when closed (e.g. images that should be compressed to 6KB are reading as 60KB, and the file size is often smaller when opened than closed). Furthermore, anytime we use these image files in other programs (e.g. Filemaker Pro) the inflated file size will carry over.  What's even more puzzling is that the same files that are reading as 60KB on our Mac Pro will read correctly as 6KB from a PC.  Similarly, if we embed these images -- that were created on the Mac Pro -- into Filemaker from a PC, the image file size is correct.  We cannot use the compressed files we create on our Mac Pro because the inflated file size will be passed on to whatever application we use on the Mac Pro (except for Photoshop).
We have been processing images for years on a PC and haven't had any troubles with this.   We were thinking for a while that the problem was with the Mac operating system, but after many calls with expert Apple advisers it seems like Photoshop for Mac has to be the issue.  We have already tried reformatting and re-indexing the hard drive, and at this point there is nothing else that can be done from Apple's end.  The last expert I spoke with at Apple said that it sounds like the way Photoshop for Mac compresses files and how Mac reads file sizes is very different from the way Photoshop for PC compresses files and how Windows reads file sizes.  If he was correct, and there is no work-around, we'll have no other choice and will have to return our Mac.
Has anyone else experienced this before?  The experts at Apple were thoroughly confused by the problem and so are we.
    Thanks,
    Jenny

This has nothing to do with compression.
Macintosh saves more metadata, and more previews than Windows - that's one part.
Macintosh shows the size of the file on disk, including wasted space due to the disk block size - that's another part. (look at the byte count, not the size in K or MB).
When you upload the files to a server, or use them in most programs, that extra metadata is lost and the file sizes should be identical.
I can't believe that your advisors spent any time on such a trivial issue...

  • Podcast download problems - suddenly

I've been happily downloading podcasts through iTunes for some time
Now, suddenly (it seems), it no longer works
I can subscrive to podcasts, I can get an "episode list" of a podcast, but when I try to actually download the podcast episodes, I get an iTunes error message which says
"There was a problem downloading (podcast episode name. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
What on earth is it talking about??
I'd be very grateful for some suggestions to help track down why this is not working when it was only a few weeks ago
    Thanks
    Phil G

Maybe it's permissions on some parent folders.
When you get a podcast, what itunes does is create a temporary folder named Podcasts in a folder named Downloads. When the DL finishes, itunes does some rearranging by putting podcast in the final Podcast folder and deleting the temporary Podcast folder.
So look at permissions on the Download folder - read/write isn't enough, you need create/delete for that temporary "Podcast" folder, too. Full control over the entire music folder & subfolders should fix it.

  • ITunes podcast downloading problem.  "Authorization is required to access" error message.

I've been subsribing to a podcast through iTunes for years with no problems, but today I get the error message:
"There was a problem downloading (podcast name).  Authorization is required to access (url feed)"
Its a BBC podcast and I now get the same error message for all the other BBC podcasts that I subscribe to.  I also cant play or download any BBC podcasts from the iTunes Store.  All other podcasts by all other providers are fine.
Weirdly this problem seems to be limited to the Macbook Pro as the iMac on the same network can access the problem podcasts with no hassle.
A few web searches have turned up very little, any ideas in Apple Communities-land!

Hey Roger and thanks for your amazingly quick response.
I did a quick confirm: it doesn't seem to work on any Windows machines I can get my hands on, so it isn't something specific to me (whew!).  It definitely DOES work on any Mac I can get my hands on (which you also confirmed - thanks).
That link, the feedproxy.google.com one, works fine on Windows and Mac alike.  I very much imagine that someone else is using FeedBurner and while I'm not huge into podcasts, there are a lot of others who are.  This issue would've come up if it were something like that.  Either way: I can access that link (and thus the content) just fine on any machine I'm on.
So, what you're saying is to ditch FeedBurner entirely and just submit the raw feed to iTunes.  That sounds good (and, if I want more indepth statistics later, I'll cross that bridge then)...but I'm afraid I'm not sure how to do that.  I've already submitted the FeedBurner feed to iTunes and I'm not sure how I'd go about changing it.  Would I simply ask iTunes to delete the old feed and more or less resubmit?
Thanks for the help about the artwork.  The individual files may very well be missing the metadata, as when I asked the guy doing that if he had included the artwork, he indicated he was rather confused.  I'll test that out in a bit.  The feed artwork, however, I must admit ignorance about.  Where might I be able to change that?  I'm using WordPress and...PowerPress/BluBrry (or whatever it's referred to).
Thanks again for being so incredibly helpful with all this.  And so timely, too.

  • Solution to iPod Touch Podcast Sync Problem

Like many of you, I had problems syncing my podcasts to my iPod Touch. I have the newest model with 2.1.1, and I had the same problem where (in iTunes) I would drag and drop the podcasts onto my iTouch and nothing would happen. They would not be listed as a Genre, in the Podcast section, or anywhere - but my memory would be sucked up in a proverbial iTouch black hole!
*The intermediate solution:* Create a smart playlist on your iTouch called "Podcasts" where "Podcast is true." That's the only rule you need and in that new podcasts you will see all of your invisible podcasts you copied
*Why this happens:* The podcast section on the iTouch only will show UNPLAYED podcasts, once they are played, they "vanish" but really they are just invisible (unless you have that smart playlist). This is obviously a glitch to be fixed in either the next iTouch update or iTunes update. In order to delete unwanted Podcasts, you must go into the smart play list and delete them from there.
    I HOPE THIS HELPS!

I discovered that if you uncheck edit the Smart Playlist and uncheck the Live Update box, you get the option to delete podcasts. The bad news is that I could still not get the wanted podcast to load again into the regular podcast lists (and I made sure to mark it as new before I tried.)
This is a serious on-going issue for me, as podcasts seem to randomly become invisible. I downloaded three hours of a radio broadcast from this morning, each of which was a separate podcast. Hours 1 and 3 showed up just fine, but hour 2 only showed up in the smart list. I hadn't listened to any of them yet, as they were all brand new today.
What's seriously annoying is that this has clearly been an issue for some time on the Touch. My old 60 gig never had a problem with podcasts. It's enought to make me nostalgic.

  • ITunes 11 Podcasts downloading problem

I subscribe severall podcasts. There's one of them, I don't know why, at the office downloads very slowly. To get it to download quickly, I am always pausing and resming the download.
In iTunes 11 when I pause when resuming the status bar comes a little bit back (eg. when pause there's 660 kb's downloaded, when resuming it goes to 500 Kb's)!
The other strange thing is that it dowloads more than the size of the podcast file!
When listening This, it is always coming back and forward.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Please try to pause and resume a podcast download an see what happens.
    Thanks,
    Jorge

Similar problem with iTunes 11.0.1.12 on win7. The crash seems to occur during the "file processing" part of downloading. I've tried removing the download file from the iTunes folder - it doesn't help.  Really frustrating problem. It doesn't generate any error message beyond itunes need to stop and searching for a solution (the "solution" to update iTunes is the PROBLEM - not a solution).
I've installed VLC to play the files but it isn't iTunes and it won't sync with my ipod so... Apple people - - can't you do some simple software??? Do you really have to head towards bankruptcy again????
Geesh the Google maps flap was bad enough!

  • Any help appreciated - iTune compression problems

    Hi there,
Just bought a second hand iPhone 3g yesterday that has to last me out 5 months before my contract is up and I can hopefully get a 5 if it's out (touchwood).
Transferred some music from iTunes to my iPhone and on the phone speakers it sounds fine, however when I put my headphones into the jack it's incredibly distorted and sounds like it's suffered far too much compression.
I'm guessing this is possibly a headphone jack related problem as opposed to a compression issue? Tried converting files to AAC but made no difference
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks
    Dan

FYI - the iPhone includes a single external speaker. The opposite grill that appears the same is a microphone.
If this were a compression or format issue, the same would occur when playing the music via the speaker. Using earbuds has no affect on the compression or format. More than likely this is a headphone jack related problem or there could be a problem with the earbuds being used.

  • IOS 6 podcast app problems

Having problems with the podcast app not showing up podcasts.  If I slide the subscription button on it shows the newest one up in the list but after I click download it does nothing.  I upgraded to iOS 6 on release with the iPad I use for my video podcasts I watch.  I can download them on my iPhone 4 through iTunes with no problem. Any suggestions on what's wrong or how to fix it?
Ps. Using same Internet connection with the same Internet settings if that helps.

I am having similar issues. Several podcasts work fine, no problems. For others, I get persistent problems.
A few I can't download or stream at all. Some I can stream fine, but when I try to download, it stalls at "Preparing to download..." forever. Sometimes this eventually fails with a notice that the podcast couldn't be downloaded, other times, it just stays that way indefinitely. A few times by restarting the phone (not just the app, the whole phone), a podcast episode that was stalled before will start downloading. Its inconsistent and frustrating.  None of these issues seem to occur in iTunes on the Mac, also with the same internet connection.

  • Mp4/m4a podcast upload problems

I have a huge collection of AIFF files that I had exported via QT to mp4 files. As of recently, I have a group who's doing some EDU podcast related stuff who was hoping to post up my podcast list, but sent me an email letting me know that they couldn't use the mp4 files, as iTunes is interpreting them as video files, and I needed to use .m4a.
I heard from a few people on the boards that there's no fundemental difference and that renaming should be fine, although when trying to publish, we're getting this error:
"iTunes U could not update the content in this group because iTunes U encountered an unsupported enclosure extension in the specified RSS feed at iTunes Podcast Subscription. Until the issue is resolved, iTunes U continues to display the last downloadable version of the content. Verify that the RSS feed enclosures contain only approved content types (mpeg audio, mp4 video, quicktime video, PDF application, mp4a-latm audio) with the appropriate file extensions (mp4, mp4, mov, pdf, m4a) and then try again."
Does this mean we need to reencode all of our mp4 audio to m4a? If so, is there any way to avoid the recompression (to avoid the long hours of reencoding + potential loss in quality)?

    Henry,
Sorry, but this is a "me too" post. I've been podcasting since Oct. of 2004 and I noticed this same problem with our podcast since I changed to AAC/m4a. I've checked and rechecked the xml, and even use identical code for our vodcast/enhanced podcast and it updates fine. Interestingly, they both work great in NetNewsWire Lite, so i really think this may be some glitch with iTunes. I know this doesn't help you, but perhaps it will shed some additional light on things.

  • IWeb 08 Podcast/RSS problems

Yup, iWeb has shot my podcast...
I will post discoveries here as I learn them. Will be grateful for any help, of course!!!
Still coming to grips with new file names/locations. First thing is iWeb seems to be dealing with spaces differently now. Previously it did the old %20 thing in my podcast - Popology Podcast read Popology%20Podcast. Now, it's replaced that with an underscore - Popology_Podcast. However, it doesn't seem to have occured to the code monkeys to tell whatever generates the rss.xml file that! A manual edit of the rss.xml file doesn't help either.
I'm using feedburner, so I've changed it there, and it's starting to kick into gear, though it isn't seeing the podcast images...
More to come as I discover it.
Again - please - any advice most appreciated - and if I've gotten anything wrong so far, please put me straight! I'm just a Joe-Bloggs, not a super-web-guy...

My podcast's address, as seen in iTunes music store is:
    http://rss.mac.com/popology/iWeb/Popology/Popology%20Podcast/rss.xml
But according to iWeb's new way of dealing with spaces, this should now have an underscore instead of a %20.
    http://rss.mac.com/popology/iWeb/Popology/Popology_Podcast/rss.xml
I've tried avoiding the problem by entering my feedburner address into the rss.xml file...
    <itunes:new-feed-url>http://feeds.feedburner.com/popology</itunes:new-feed-url>
But that didn't work. I've pinged my podcast, and when I search for it in the music store, delete and resubscribe, it still doesn't pick up that it should go to the feedburner feed.
QUESTION: Am I editing the wrong file - rss.xml - in my podcast directory? This seems to be a new location - till I upgraded, the RSS files were in a seperate folder (up a few levels on my idisk) altogether, but there's nothing there now...?
I'm considering trying to remove the space in the original iWeb design on my comp and reuploading... 128k upstream... hmm - that will take a while...

  • JAI CCIT4 compression problem

I have experienced a problem when trying to write out a tiff image using the group4 compression method (CCIT4), the problem is that it inverts the colors of the ouput file, inverting the image before writing or going through the image and inverting manully is too slow. If anyone could please help?
    Thanks, Wesley.

The Java Twain package has been updated since, the name has changed to Morena. Now Morena is available at http://www.gnome.sk together with a tutorial and many examples.
    For illustration:
Using Morena, pictures from the scanner/camera are acquired in the same way as a file is opened from the disk:
    image=Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(TwainManager.getDefaultSource());
There are more than 100 methods available in the Morena to get and set scanner capabilities. Below is an example how to call some typical of them:
    TwainSource twainSource= TwainManager.getDefaultSource();
twainSource.setVisible(false);     // hiding the Twain user interface and manage scanning directly from the Java
    twainSource.setXResolution(100);     // setting DPI
    twainSource.setYResolution(100);     // setting DPI
twainSource.setPixelType(TwainSource.TWPT_ RGB);     // setting color model
    System.err.println("getPixelType=" + source.getPixelType()); //geting the actual color model
    twainSource.setContrast(300);     // setting contrast
    image=Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(twainSource);
To analyze an acquired image is a straightforward method. The developer needs to create his own class with a Java ImageConsumer interface and to start produce data from the scanner/camera directly to the new class. E.g. if his class has name "myImageConsumer", it receives data by the following code:
    TwainSource twainSource= TwainManager.getDefaultSource();
    twainSource.startProduction(myImageConsumer);
Data are sent via ImageConsumer interface and can be parsed in the byte/int array.

  • IPod classic podcast download problem

How can I redownload my podcasts which disappeared the last time I synced my iPod Classic 160gb?

I think i fixed the problem something i didn't want to do, but i tried unchecking each artist and removing them from the ipod and check them back and put them back on the ipod i also reset my ipod but none of that still didn't work so i decided to restore my ipod something i didn't want to do because i have so much music and put everything back on my ipod and that seem to work so just have to see how long it stay like that before the artwork get screwed up again which i hope not.
so if anyone else is having the same problem with the artwork messed up on your ipod just restore your ipod, it worked for me.

  • [Solved] Compression Problem with 7z + Peazip

I like to compress a file with 7zip, which doesn't succeed.
It has a size of 4.4GB and after compression it got about 3,8GB.
If I choose split the file to 1DVD size, it will succeed with a *.7z.001, this is why I know the compressed size. But if I choose single volume, it will give me this error:
              7-Zip [64] 9.20  Copyright (c) 1999-2010 Igor Pavlov  2010-11-18
              p7zip Version 9.20 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs)
              Scanning
              Creating archive /home/xxx/xxx/file.7z
              Compressing  file.iso
    System error:
    E_FAIL
    The command is:
    /usr/lib/peazip/res/7z/7z a -t7z -m0=LZMA -mmt=on -mx5 -md=16m -mfb=32 -ms=2g -w '/home/xxx/xxx/file.7z' '/home/xxx/xxx/file.iso'
The code which will succeed with split file is:
    /usr/lib/peazip/res/7z/7z a -t7z -m0=LZMA -mmt=on -mx5 -md=16m -mfb=32 -ms=2g -v4699324416 -w '/home/xxx/xxx/file.7z' '/home/xxx/xxx/file.iso'
Ark compressor also crashes when trying to compress this file, and so is fileroller. This is why I guess the problem lies in 7z, but I don't actually know for sure, because if I use peazip and try to compress the file to a single volume *.zip, it will also crash. But on the other hand I think zip compression is also done by 7z.
Compression ratio is not relevant, it will crash even of store.
It doesn't crash if I use compressor to create *.pea, which I don't want to use.
The compression will succeed with other files, but not with all. From 11 files I try to compress, it succeeded with 6, it didn't succeed with 5. All files are 4,4Gb before compression.
My file systen is ext4, I tried to copy the files to a different hdd also on ext4 and another one with ntfs, no change.
I am out of ideas what I should do, I only can guess the problem is with 7zip somewhere.
Last edited by alocacoc (2014-03-06 06:39:50)

OK, when I compress with peazip to *.7z, it will fill up the directory /tmp, which is 2GB, which is half of my RAM size I guess, till its full. But when I do a split file (to produce a *.7z.001 file with a split limit of 4,4GB (this will also produce one file only), it will not use /tmp.
So maybe the problem is that at *.7z time it wants to cache it to /tmp, and at the split file it will cache to the destenation directory.
This was guessable also the problem why ark and fileroller crashed before, since I kept the peazip error window open and it won't release its temp file in /tmp till its closed and the whole system reacted strangely in this time.
Maybe I have to wait for an update on Peazip or 7zip to see if the problem will be fixed.

  • Podcast Playlist Problems - 1st gen Shuffle

First off, I'm a casual user of iTunes & Shuffle - almost solely for podcasts and couldn't figure out how to make a playlist stick on the iPod; it would revert to file order, not playlist order. Couldn't reorder in the Library>Podcasts folder. Autofill wouldn't work. After much searching, and blundering about including restoring the Shuffle, I've made some progress.
    1. I understand that you cannot arbitrarily re-order the Library>Podcasts folder.
    2. For Autofill to work, all selected Podcasts must have the option 'Skip when shuffling' unchecked; updated podcasts seem to have this checked automatically so you have to redo the option after an update but you can do so globally for all items in Library>Podcasts or in a Playlist. Doing it in one seems to change that property for all lists.
    3. My problem with the playlist order being preserved in iPod seems to have been cured by the radical surgery of rebuilding the Library.
a)For my initial test, I simply relocated iTunes Library.itl to a safe folder; on the next start, iTunes built a new itl file and, of course, the library was empty. I subscribed to a few podcasts and was able to build dumb and 'Smart' playlists with which I could Autofill.
b)For my next test, I replaced the new library file with the original, exported the library to a XML file in a safe place, closed iTunes, relocated the itl file again and started afresh. Then imported the previously exported XML file which brought back all my playlists, etc, but the podcasts had re-subscribe buttons. This seemed to work fine until I subscribed to and downloaded another podcast. I then lost the ability to re-order in the Smart Playlist and the iPod playlist. Somehow I got it back; not sure if it was that 'Skip when shuffling' option again or it was because I did a global change of genre from Podcast to News & Political - maybe that diddled the file favorably.
    4. I'm not sure how to preserve my playlist order through podcast updates - my order not being one that matches a sort field. These are periodic podcasts (daily, weekly). If I set the subscription to auto-delete, the item disappears from my dumb playlists and drops to the bottom of the smart playlist when the podcast is updated. I'm not sure what happens if subscriptions are set to 'Do not auto delete' except that there is a growing sublist of prior items in the Library>Podcasts list and the Playlists still point to the one that was most recent when it was added to the Playlist. How do you keep a playlist sync'd to the latest podcast. I think the problem is that each regular podcast is a 'song' entity belonging to a common album, the name of the show. Each 'song' entity or podcast bears a unique id that the playlists use to point to it. What I want is for the playlist to point to the album and have only the latest 'song' playable. Any hints as to what I might do?
    Thanks,
    Tom

It looks improbable that an arbitrarily ordered playlist of podcasts can be automatically maintained in order through successive podcast updates. I've adopted the following procedure to manually maintain the order with a minimum (I hope) of steps. I'd welcome any suggestions for improvement.
I subscribe to podcasts that are updated hourly, twice daily, daily, and weekly. But I only do an iTunes update infrequently and rarely get to listen to the playlist on the Shuffle - maybe on a long drive or while painting a room.
    Build Playlist
    1. In Library>Podcasts I delete all of the prior podcast links keeping only the most recent. Select All, right-click and select the 'Do not autodelete' option. Select All, right-click>Get Info and in Multiple Item Information dialog window, Check and set Remember Position - Yes, Skip When Shuffling - No, Equalizer Preset - Loudness, OK.
    2. In Library>Podcasts I Select All (Ctrl-A), right-click and select the 'Do not autodelete' option. Select All, right-click>Get Info and in Multiple Item Information dialog window, Check and set Remember Position - Yes, Skip When Shuffling - No, Equalizer Preset - Loudness, OK.
    3. Create new Smart Playlist (CtrlAltN) with 'Match the following rule' set to 'Podcast is true' + other rules, e.g., 'Date Modified is in the last x days' and check 'Live Updating'. Now you have a playlist that has all (or whatever your rules allow) your podcast downloads in it and you can re-order the podcasts arbitrarily.
    Maintain Playlist in Order
    1. After updating Podcasts, repeat step 2 above because the updated podcasts don't inherit iTunes properties from the prior ones.
    2. Select your Smart Playlist. The updated podcasts will be automatically added to the bottom of the list. The ones they should replace should have remained in position provided the rules don't remove them and thus provide place markers for where the updated ones are to be dragged and dropped.
    3. Return to Library>Podcasts and delete the prior ones. They will also disappear from your Playlist.
    4. With iPod inserted and showing under Devices, select it and Autofill from the playlist created above.
I'd welcome any suggestions for improving the procedure.
    Tom
