Spolight does not search old Microsoft Word files

Hi,
I have a large number of Microsoft Word files in in the Word 5 format, which Spotlight fails to find. Is there a way of getting Spotlight to index and find these? Or is there a program that can convert the old Word files to a new format? Doing so one by one would take far too long.
I appreciate your help.
Michel

Most versions of Word® can update the files, and Neo-Office can, but you'd need a script to load then save them.
And MacLinkPlus used to have a Drag and Drop Document converter.
Or you could get EasyFind...

  • Converting ALL my old microsoft word files to pages files?

i am a switchover user from a mac. all my documents that were from my PC are now on my mac, but they are all just regular files, and not the Pages type of file. incidentally, when i try to open one of these files, TextEdit is the default program. Is there any way that i can do one mass conversion of all my files to make them all Pages files? thanks

    Hullo Bozz_2006:
With regard to your first question - you are, in fact, duplicating files when you save in this way. I don't know how many .doc files you have, but short of a mammoth folder, it could well be simpler to make a practice of deleting each one as you save it to Pages; or a project of going through the lot and then deleting the folder you had your .doc files in - given that you're satisfied the transition has been successful. And this way you'd be checking them as you go.
Keeping your converted Pages documents in their own folder is also easy if taken one at a time. "Save As ..." in the File menu will give you the option of doing this; and also creating a new folder at the same time. The keyboard shortcut to this is Shift/Command/S. The dialogue box it presents will show you this.
With this done, you can then drag and drop the Pages docs already on your desktop into your new folder, and if need be (Say you'd called your Word docs folder "Documents" and would like to stick with this), use File/Get Info in Finder to rename it from, say "Pages Docs" once you've deleted the former Word folder. You can also use the Finder File menu to put it in the Sidebar.
Mine's a "penny plain" answer. But I find the odd repetitive cleaning up more relaxing and probably as quick, when you get down to it, as messing about with scripts for what is, after all, a one-off project.
On the other hand, it would be smart of Apple to produce a script for just what you're doing. You might like to suggest it via "Provide Pages Feedback" in the Pages main menu. But don't hold your breath: I suspect that Apple / MS politics oblige Steve to tread lightly on winning converts too easily! And neither would any feasible script afford you the opportunity to inspect each example before committing to the conversion.
    Cheers.

  • Keyboard does not work in Microsoft Word

i am having probelm to use ms word on mac. keybord is not working i only can copy and paste but i cant type anything.

Closing down Word and re-opening it only worked temporarily for me.  Since I couldn't stand to keep closing and re-opening Word every few minutes, I went searching Apple forums for a better solution. (Unfortunately, I lost track of where I found this solution, so I can't direct you to the original post/instructions - sorry!)  Apparently, hitting the Option key 5 times will turn off your keyboard -- and hitting it another 5 times will turn it back on.  So, even though I don't remember hitting the Option key a bunch of times, apparently I must have since hitting it 5 times turned my keyboard back on!  Magic!
The original poster also suggested turning off that toggle feature so that you don't inadvertently turn off the keyboard again.  (Disable the toggle feature AFTER you have turned your keyboard back on.)  Here's how:  System Preferences > Accessibility >  Mouse & Trackpad > Options > Press the Option key five times to toggle Mouse Keys > OK.
    Hope that helps!

  • Does Lion support the old microsoft word for MAC files?

Does Lion support the old microsoft word for MAC  files? I have heard that if i down load  Lion then my Word files for Mac will not function or work. Is this true?? I don't want to download Lion if this happens.

The file type does not matter, the program you use to open the file does.
You need a newer version of word (or a third party program).
You can use openoffice as well.

Why Acrobat x professional is changing the text formatting specifically the font family  and the font size of the text in my pdf on exporting it to Microsoft word file format ?How should i stop Acrobat x professional from doing that so that i get an exactly same word file on exporting it from its pdf counterpart?

I was testing the preciseness & efficiency of Adobe acrobat x professional's doc conversion capabilities. As i have to take a document editing project in future which is going to need lot of pdf to word and vice versa conversions . What I did was I created a test word document converted into a pdf using a pdf maker in my word 2007 , Acrobat did convert the document from word to pdf keeping everything in the source file intact , However when i tried the other way round and attempted to convert the same pdf to word 2007 file format I lost my formatting ?So the font that I used to create the pdf are the ones taken from word 2007 which i believe is using the fonts that are installed in my computer. Any suggestions on how to preserve the formatting of the document after converting it from pdf to word file format?

  • I updated to Yosemite, now my laptop keyboard does not work in MS Word for Mac. Help!

I updated to Yosemite, now my laptop keyboard does not work in MS Word for Mac. Help! Any suggestions for fixing this?

Did you ever get a solution to your problem? Because I am having the same problem. I was actually in the middle of using Word when the keyboard stopped working. But it works in other apps, including in Excel.
Thing is that my laptop just got back from Apple for repairs and they replaced everything but the display - including the hard drive.
So not only do I have plenty of hard drive space, but it should be virus and error free otherwise.
I have only installed a few programs and redownloaded some of my files from places like Dropbox, but otherwise is essentially a new system.
Oh - and it came with Yosemite, so I did not upgrade to Yosemite and still Word doesn't work.
I've always had trouble getting Word to play nice with my Mac but that was also with the old, full hard drive.
This is a fresh install. And since I lost all my files, I only had like 1 old file I have downloaded from email and accessed and was in the process of
creating a new file when it crashed. I got no error, the keyboard just stopped working (to type). I also cannot even get Word > Preferences to even open,
    so it is completely unresponsive.
I did a Google search and under the Microsoft communities two suggestions to that person were that there may be multiple copies installed -
I have only the one - and that one is in the wrong place - again, I only have the one and it installed to the Hard drive (visible in Launchpad / Apps).
Another suggestion was that there was some problem with the updates. I ran updates and they installed fine. That helper suggested that the user
may have had different updates that worked for the other Office apps (Excel, PPT etc.) but not Word and that was at least part, if not all of his problem,
but all my Office apps show the same update version 12.3.6, so that cannot be the issue with me.
I've not yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but as I got no errors on the original install or updates, I'm not sure if that would fix it.
I've found that Mac just doesn't play nice with some programs at all.
And even though I have a factory installed version of Yosemite on a new, fresh hard drive, even when I booted up, my iPhoto app (which is empty) crashed. I am not sure if my iPhone or iPad was charging at the time, but I don't think so. iPhoto that I still have not even used has crashed several more times since, most notably when plugging in my iPhone / iPad to charge, namely when I declined to upload photos (by default) to DropBox. That may not be related at all, but thus far seems the only other problem I have encountered until this Word problem.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, Sept. 2009, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 factory installed from Apple repairs running Office: 2008 for Mac (Home and Student edition).
Please advise if you found a resolution and what it was.
    Thanks

  • Is there a free way to convert a pdf file to a microsoft word file?

Is there a free way to convert a pdf file to a microsoft word file?

Adobe does not offer a free PDF to Word conversion. You may want to check out our ExportPDF service though. It's quite inexpensive: https://www.acrobat.com/exportpdf/en/pricing.html

  • How to recover a microsoft word file?

hi, i have a microsoft word file saved at an usb memory device. after i worked on it, instead of clicking the eject icon, i just unpluged it my mistake! then, when i plug it and tried to open the file, the file is still there but what i've saved inside is all gone! could anybody help me to recovered the file, thanks alot!

Try this: In the top right corner of the menubar there's there's a spyglass icon which opens the Spotlight search. Since you lost a Word document it should end in .docx so type that in and press the Return key. A window will open and under its grey toolbar you should see Search: and after that at least one item: This Mac and perhaps several others. Select This Mac so Spotlight searches the entire hard drive for files ending in docx.
The list will probably be sorted by filename and if you know the name of your missing file that's great. If not, look just above the first file listed for Name. Now look over to the right for the column labeled Date Modified. You may need to scroll toward the right to find it. When you do, click on Date Modified to sort the list by date. Now find the most recently saved files for your missing document.
Note: You may need to search for .doc rather than .docx depending on how you save your documents.

  • Read content in Microsoft Word file.

My new project is to read content in Microsoft Word. But,
blah blah blah code are appeared when I read microsoft word file
with cffile tag, and display included content in textarea. Here is
my coding. Anything wrong in my coding and how can I read ms.word
file and display included content in this file??
    all answers will be appreciated.

I have figured out how to use Object in Word to embed the SWF file and use the Control Box to activate it, however, like you when I convert to Acrobat PDF from the Word Add-in it does not embed the SWF in a playable format, although the object is there.  I can't seem to get any relevant properties using the Touch Up Object tool either.  I hope someone else has a clue.  Otherwise I recommend creating your word document with "empty" text boxes that the text will wrap around and then converting to PDF and once in Acrobat embed a Flash object using the Multimedia button.

  • When I click on a .docx document Firefox thinks it is binary and saves but does not open with MS Word - but it knows .doc is MS Word and opens it automatically

When I click on a .docx document Firefox thinks it is binary and saves it but does not open with MS Word. But it knows .doc is MS Word and opens it automatically (this is the behavior I would like with .docx docs.) In preferences -- applications - it is just says "content type" is "microsoft word document" but doesn't give a way to choose .docx specifically. Is there another way to do this?
Iam running Mac OS X 10.6.4 and Firefox 3.6.8 with MS Word Mac 2008

    Hi ,
According to your description, my understanding is that you could not edit documents with Office client application in SharePoint 2010.
Let’s do a troubleshooting about this issue:
    1. Make sure that you have installed Office application on your machine.
    2. Which explorer did you use for your SharePoint. Please test it with IE 10 32-bit, compare the result.
    3. Please try to reset IE, compare the result.
    4. Add your SharePoint site into Trusted site on your IE options.
    5. Make sure all add-ons related to SharePoint are enable, special for SharePoint OpenDocument Class and SharePointOpenXMLDocuments.
    6. Since you used OWA for your SharePoint site, please try to disable OWA, then open documents with client application, compare the result.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks,

  • PDF file and Microsoft Word files

I love all the big improvements apple is making to their product lines. But I am a practical person who needs to open pdf. files and Microsoft Word files on the go. That is why I will still pick a Treo, Dash, and any other pda over the Iphone. When is apple going to make a real war against PDA's and produce these kinds of software? This would make the Iphone the ultimate phone.

Actually you CAN store them on your phone -- you need to download the free program FileMarkMaker (Its in versiontracker for mac, don't know if it is available for PC users)
It allows you to attach any PDF within a URL address and save it as a bookmark, and sync it to your iPhone. You can then read it anytime (you don't need an internet connection) by going to the name of the link you created for the file in Safari. Works perfectly -- I have everything from Maps of the subway stations for the cities I visit to manuals and documents on it.
Just one caveat -- you can't search or use other features from within that Safari page - it will just crash the safari application -- you need to change to a blank safari page before you can use google or other safari features.

  • Acrobat 8 doesn't list Microsoft Word files as supported file types

I have Acrobat 8.1.2 Professional running on Vista SP1 with Office 2007.
When I try to convert files to PDF from within Acrobat, no Microsoft Word files (neither .doc nor .docx) are recognized, and Word isn't an option in the list of file types.
HOWEVER, Excel and PowerPoint are listed, and the PDFMaker toolbar in Word works perfectly. So I can convert to PDF from within Word with the toolbar, just not in Acrobat from the Create PDF... button.
This is a critical problem for me, because I need to make PDFs of dozens or hundreds of files, and it will take me a long time to do each one manually from the PDFMaker toolbar.
Any thoughts? I hope someone's already encountered this and knows how to fix it!
    Thanks,
    Ben

I believe this is all normal.
