Spontaneous black screen with Zen V Plus. / Where do I send it
Dear Creative,
I purchased a 2GB Zen V Plus roughly four months ago. It was a present to myself and a tool to accompany me on my long flight. (You see, I was about to spend 9 hours on a plane as I moved to the United Kingdom.) Before I purchased this lovely device, I did extensi've research. I had planned on buying an MP3 player that exhibited the features I wanted AND would last quite a while. Everything I read about the Zen V Plus was perfect. Not a complaint in sight.
Until today.
Over these past few months, I haven't actually used my Zen V very often. I can count on one hand the amount that I actually have used it. Once on a short walk to post office. Once on a walk to ASDA. Once whilst I was hoovering and waiting for my laptop to come in the post. Plus, the flight across the Atlantic -- about 2 hours continuous use. The rest of these four months, my little Zen V has been nestled away in its case, in my nightstand drawer, next to my bed.
Now that you know all this, I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when I pulled it out of its case this afternoon and discovered my screen was drastically faded. My initial thought was that it may be a problem with the contrast. So I inserted a thin object into the reset slot and powered my Zen V back on. This is when I discovered, well, nothing. A plain black screen. No lines, no text, no glow -- nothing. My buttons still glow with the blue color they always have when my Zen is powered on. Plus, when I push 'play' music happily sounds through my earbuds.
After I discovered that my precious Zen was broken, I quickly took to the Internet to find a solution. But what do I find? Several cases like mine strewn across message board after message board. Even a search for 'black screen' on the forum I'm currently posting this to returns with ten results.
Is this a problem with 'firmware' or is this a problem with design? Did you acti'vely know about this problem when these devices were tested and 'OK'd to ship? A better question is, do you care? Why is there no recall and why is there no repair time faster than two months?
Furthermore, I'm well under my warranty expiration date. It comes with a year from the date of purchase, no? The downside of this is that every bit of my Zen V paperwork is back in a box, within a box, within my storage unit in the USA.
So now that you know my problem, please help with a solution. How do I pursue repairs on my Zen V Plus? Where would I send it within the UK? Is my warranty still valid now that I've moved? If not, what will the price be to repair? Etc etc.
Don't get this letter wrong. The times that I've used my Zen V, I've absolutely loved it. It's a very nicely packaged mp3 player with some equally nice features. Trouble is, I expected it to hold out a bit longer than /3 of a year.
Love,
Vrai
Yep. Tried that. A few of times, actually. I tried to 'update the firmware' also. I did this blindly (more or less) as I couldn't actually see the screen. I just followed the physical instructions and tried each possible thing you could. I'm not actually sure if I ended up repeating myself. Did it about eight to be sure. I think there are only four options on the menu where you can access the firmware.

Boot camp black screen with blip
So i was installing windows 7using boot camp, everything was going well intell i got to pick which drive to install. it stated installing the files then said files cant be loaded. I tryed to repeat the process but got the same message. So i restarted my mac, now its just sitting at a black screen with a blip in the upper left cornor of the screen like if i was to type something. Iv restarted serveral times, and its the same screen. I cant get back to the windows start screen or my mac screen. i read one a post with a similar problem but it says to take out the windows disk in the drive, i wont let me force eject it or even eject normaly. What can i do?
And you don't know how to get back to OSX? Did you read the Boot Camp directions (they are on the first screen in Boot Camp Assistant)
Reboot, as soon as you hear the startup chime press and hold the option key, when the startup manager appears select OSX.
Then read the instructions.
And tell me how you installed the Support Software, plus where you got it from? -
Xorg-server 1.6 - black screen with mouse cursor
Hi
First of all: I'm really new to Arch, so maybe there is a real easy fix for this problem
Since upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 (and today to 1.6.1) I'm not able to get a running Desktop Environment.
Usually I am using gnome with compiz-fusion on my Geforce 4 (nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 driver).
When I boot my machine i see gdm and I am able to login. I can hear my login sound but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
I added a new test user to my system without compiz and get the same.
I tried my old xorg.conf from 1.5, generated a new one with X -configure and tried without xorg.conf but everytime the same
Actually I'm not sure if the xorg update is responsible for this, because i did not watch the upgrade-process....
I googled this problem and was searching similar things in this froum, but I wasn't able to find something
Here are some files
xorg.conf (i know there are some bullshit things in it, but it was workig )

Last edited by MueLLe (2009-04-15 21:35:42)I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

Recently I've been getting this weird problem where my macbook air will show a black screen with only the cursor visible that I can move around but nothing else can be done to get to the desktop. The only way is to close the lid and wait for around 10 or more seconds and then open the lid again to bring the laptop back from sleep and hope that the laptop goes to the lock screen and then to the desktop. This works often but sometimes the only solution seems to be to restart the laptop. This also happens when I tilt the lid to the point where it is almost closed and when I tilt it back the screen presents the above state. Theis has been happening often now and it is almost impossible for the above not to happen atleast 2 to 3 times a day. iThis is a relatively new problem that has been occuring since the past two weeks or so and never happened to me on my Macbook Pro 15 2011. My current system is a Macbook Air 11" 2013 Haswell 1.3 Ghz 4GB RAM 256 GB SSD. Now I dont want to have to send in my laptop if I dont have to if there is a way I can solve this myself. Anybody else have this problem?
Hello tseten,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air was not waking from sleep appropriately. For an issue like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

I bought and downloaded the windows 7 ultimate edition 64 bit iso, then proceeded to perform a correct burn to a DVD one at the slowest speed and one at the fastest. all went well. so I open Boot Camp assistant and follow the instructions to the letter, downloaded the driver support to the flash drive. partitioned my drive with more than enough room 150 gb. its starts its install. I get through everything seamlessly where I put in my info all with the exception of my activation code. yet it still continues to finalize the install and does another restart. boots back up to either A. black screen saying press any key to boot to my install disk. B. if I take it out just a white curser. also I read it may be because I had the flash drive in while I was trying to boot so I removed it as well, same result. any input would be much appreciated.
Boot Camp- Windows installation boots to black screen with blinking cursor.

Lenovo think pad S230u Black screen with mouse pointer after log in
Hello I dont know if i am on the right board for this but this is the first time i am posting on here. I have a Lenovo think pad S230u. Recently it will load up to the screen where you put in your password and let you put it in your password but then just loads to a all black screen with just a mouse pointer on it thats it. I read on line that some other thinkpads had this issue with a display driver but i couldnt find anything on the one i have. The one i have is running windows 8. Any help is greatly appericated.
Hi Lsaacw,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing an issue with No Boot to Windows 8 on your ThinkPad S230u.
Please check if the system is able to boot to ‘safe mode’.
Please click here to know the procedure on how to boot the system into ‘safe mode’.
Perform clean boot in safe mode and restart the system to check.
Hope this helps!

IPhone crashing to black screen with apple, apps as well.
My iPhone 5, which i have had for a couple of weeks now, continuously crashes in a weird way. It will, while im using random applications but mostly imessage, and maps, and when i am on the home screen go to a black screen with the apple logo, as if i had done a home button + power button restart, and then come back to the lock screen within a few seconds. As well, iMessages, Maps, Chrome and other apps crash frequently while i am using them. At random times, and not when i do a certain thing. i cannot replicate either crashing issue by doing anything other than just use of my phone.
I have had my iPhone replaced twice, i am on the third iPhone 5 in the past 2 weeks, each one i've had i have done a restart, reset, restore both from the backup and "fresh", where i have manually loaded the applications, logged into icloud, and started a new sync. I still get the problem. I think it may have somethign to do with my iCloud account, i have a legacy @me account that is connected with my iCloud account, but turning off icloud on my phone does nothing. It isn't time related, and doesn't happen on regular intervals (I thought it might have been mail fetching new data, turned it off and the problem still persists). Below are some crash reports (found in settings, general, about, Diagnostics & Usage Data), i've taken a some from the springboard, imessage, maps, and some others. I have more than 120 crash reports since 5 PM on the 16th (When i last tried to restart, reset, restore), until this morning the 18th. This is the most frustrating issue i've had with an apple product, ever.
Thank you so much for your help.

Hi,
Recently my dad's Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) on his Mac Pro has stopped working. It gets stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've waited at least five minutes and it doesn't do anything, I have to power it off.
However it starts up perfectly fine and intact in Parallels desktop. If I insert the original installation DVD and boot from the Disc that says 'Windows' it will boot into the partition and work fine, unless I press a key to boot from the DVD.
I find both these things to be strange. The partition is backed up, which is fine, but I'd rather not have to re-install it if possible.
I have booted from the DVD and tried to repair the disk. It said it found a problem with something related to startup and that it needed to restart to repair it. I clicked yes, and then held alt/opt and (I think wrongly) booted back into the disc rather than the Windows partition. However it now says that it can't detect any problems.
In the repair my computer section when booting from the DVD, it detects the OS as Windows Vista Business. I followed these steps I found online:
Fixed! Peroblem was I think using OEM, which Bootcamp advise against using... they advise to use retail only. Fixed like this:
1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start your computer.
2. Hold down Option key till all available disks are displayed and select DVD. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then 4. click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
7.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type (these commands are safe)
Code: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Code: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
Code: Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
*Press ENTER after each command.*
*Restart your computer.*
Done. Rockin'
FixMbr was successful, as was FixBoot. However RebuildBcd reported that it found no Windows installations.
Does anyone know what could be wrong here? I should note that recently I removed the drive Windows 7 is installed on and put it back in. Also Windows Updates probably have been done by my dad. Not sure if they could be the problem.Cult, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like you have a failing power supply unit (PSU). This will cause the symptoms that you describe. If the computer isn't getting enough power, it can cause numerous problems. You can try disconnecting any unnecessary components to see if it will boot. Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the problem.

Black Screen with curser When Installing Windows 7 on Mavericks
I have been trying to install windows on my macbook pro via bootcamp all day today, i have put about 7 hours into it and i am very frustrated. I have followed the guides. I have updated my mac, installed the windows support drivers, i have the most recent bootcamp, I have windows 7 on a DVD with a usb optical drive.
So my problem comes when I get to installing windows. after i make the partion on bootcamp it trys to reboot to windows but instead goes to a black screen with curser. i have gone online and read through tons of forums that talk about this exact problem. i have attempted what they suggest such as booting while the usb with the windows support drivers is connected and boot to the windows disk using the option at boot. (Still black screen with curser) I have tried booting to the windows disk with no other external usbs attached but the optical drive. (still black screen). i have tried booting to another disk part of the DVD callled " EFI Boot" that pops up when holding option at boot up. When doing this windows 7 actually does start up and starts the install process but when choosing the bootcamp disk to install to, it says it is the wrong format. so i tried to format it in the windows install as people have said but that did work. But people have also said on other forums that you cant boot windows using the EFi Boot or what ever its called so i dont think that is an option. I have repeatedly deleted the bootcamp partion and tried to partition it again but still get the black screen when booting up.
My mac is a Macbook pro mid 2012. It also is a mavericks whitch i have seen caused many others problems with bootcamp. so i have seen many answers to the black curser screen but none have worked with me. Do you guys have any suggestions or questions for me that would help me get this figured out? Thanks for the Help!Simple fact is IF you have replaced the original built in DVD drive with a second HDD you will never be able to install Windows on your Mac, or at least not easily.
Apple has restricted Mac computers that originally come with a built in DVD drive to only install Windows from that built in drive When It Is Installed Inside the System.
These Mac's will not boot from the Windows installer from any other source, not USB stick or USB connected DVD drive no matter what make or model DVD drive it is.
So there are only three option.
1) Reinstall the original DVD Super drive in the Optical bay and whatever drive you want Windows install on to the main bay, install OS X on that drive in the main bay then use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows. Once that has completed you can then switch around the drives to your liking.
2) Reinstall the Super drive to the Optical bay and whatever drive you want Windows install on to the Main bay. Do not install OS X and install Windows natively on the drive in the Main bay. The Windows 7 (and maybe a Win 8) DVD will boot the Mac computer from the DVD drive and you should be able to run the Windows installer, Partition and Format the drive for Windows only, MBR partition table, and complete the install of Windows on that drive. Then load the Apple Supplied Windows Support files you downloaded once Windows has finished the install.
Then move your drives around where you want them and install OS X on the other drive.
3) There are reports of being able to copy the Windows install files to a partition on one of the drives you will be using and then run the Windows setup, installer, from that partition. I have no information on exactly how to do that. -
Recently, whenever I click on almost any of my pictures, in any album, in order to enlarge that photo, it starts to enlarge but then,
very quickly I get a black screen with a large white exclamation mark in the middle. And no full sized photo. Boo!
What did I do to my iPhoto program, and how can I fix it?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Mike H.I'm sorry. Too old to understand this stuff. I'm sure this seems real stupid to you. But I have no idea how one
would "right click on the Original iPhoto Library" (I know, I know, 'as stated").
Do I right click on the symbol in the dock?? Or open it first and then, . . I can't find a way to right click on the word iPhoto in the top bar.
Or should I open the program you had me download. There I can find something called "original iPhoto library".
When I "right click" on that I get some options. None of them are "original folders". There's "reveal library in finder", and "dupilicate library and "sort libraries". I have no idea if any of these are what you want, or if any of these might change something.
When I clicked on "reveal library in finder" earlier on it showed me the copy of the photo library that I made a while ago, sitting right where I know it is on my desktop. And if I click on that symbol it shows me all the pictures again. Just like in my regular iPhoto files - all the thumbs are there, but most can't be opened to full sized.
Are we making progress here? I'm sure this is frustrating to you. This is just pictures of family. Even the thumbs are nice to look at. But this is nothing critical - like work related or anything.
Thanks.
Mike

Unable to restore iTouch, stuck on black screen with white apple
Hello to any and all that can offer me assistance:
I have an iPod Touch. I have restored it more than once. It will show the screen with the USB cord and the iTunes logo. After the restoration process the computer screen will say that the restoration was completed and my iTouch will turn back on to be recognized by iTunes in 10 seconds. That never happens. Instead I get the black screen with the white apple. It will stay on then flick off after about 20 seconds repeatedly.
I have tried uninstalling all Apple files and re-downlading them. I have tried letting it die then charging it. I was getting error 1611 so I disabled my security software and did the restore again. I have deleted and readded the file in the folder for iPod software updates. I have held the shift key when pressing restore in iTunes and selected the newly downloaded iOS/firmware. I unplugged it from the front USB port on my tower to a slot on the back. I unplugged and restarted my pc with nothing plugged into the USB ports other than the iTouch cord, my mouse and keyboard.
All have failed. Once - out of no where - I thought that I had gotten lucky because it was back to factory defaults. I added my apps and music to it. Once I unplugged it from my PC within minutes it died and started doing the flicker on and off again.
What else can I try? I am frustrated and running out of ways to google and review other discussions on the Apple site on how to repair it. I don't know what generation it is. I've owned it for maybe 2 years. It's a 32g iTouch.
Please help if you can! :-)
Thx,
HunyBAre you referring to when i hold down the circle button until it restarts? I've tried that. I always get back to the screen with the USB cord pointing toward the iTunes logo. While still holding the button i plug it in to the USB cord. I do the restoration....it shows a little icon that are small lines like sunrays that light up like it;s about to restart.....then it gots back to the flickering. ;-(

Stuck with black screen with Apple and download bar approx 1 quarter done. Downloading Yosemite. It has completely stopped. I can't access anything. Please help
You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore. When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer. -
GS70 - Does not boot - black screen with solid white dash
Sorry for the long post - I've been beating my head against this problem all day, filed a report ticket and really need help from anyone who has ideas.
Yesterday evening after finally relenting and allowing the patch Tuesday updates to install on my GS70 Stealth I tried to power on my computer and it remained stuck at the MSI logo. I waited 3 hours with no success before powering it off and attempting to access the bios by hitting the delete button. The screen turned black except for one non-blinking white dash near the center of the screen. This screen also remains indefinitely and requires a hardware power off to work. I've tried all of the function key presses and recovery shortcuts to no avail.
Eventually I tried to boot into linux via a live USB. I still could not access the bios but, to my surprise, so long as this USB is in my system, Windows happily boots. After this I tried to revert to a system restore point before the updates but that did not resolve the problem. I also tried to update the BIOS but there is no way to install BIOS updates that I know of that doesn't require accessing the old BIOS first (which I cannot do because the black screen with a white dash is still all that shows up). I tried forcing the UEFI bios to load through windows recovery settings with no luck either.
I've sent in an RMA/Support request and hopefully MSI will repair or replace my device but I sent it in for an RMA literally less than two months ago and to be having to do it again so soon is starting to turn me off of the product. For me to insure and ship my device to MSI costs a little over $100 each time which is rapidly turning this $1600 product into an $1800 one and turning me from an MSI brand loyalist to a 'one-star-review everywhere' evangelist. Is it possible that something MSI did during the last RMA screwed up my motherboard (they replaced the disfunctional steel series keyboard with a new marginally more functional steel series keyboard)? Does MSI ever cover the shipping costs for an RMA if the RMA is a result of damage that they caused to the device? Is there anything I should do to try to avoid burning more money trying to get a luxury-priced product I've already paid for to function?i had similar problem myself on my first GS70 it has some sort of bios problem that it random hangs itself :/ causes OS not to boot and bios refuses to load but i managed to get my recovery USB to boot but not bios yet so i sent laptop off for repair they replaced the motherboard so i got it back then i had an faulty gpu :/ so i took it back and got money back so i bought new one some where else since than i havent had problem so this sort of problem sounds like bios firmware isnt booting propertly :/ so have you tried removing msata and HDD from laptop and then power laptop on? to see if bios gets forced on if so power it off put msata back on and so then power laptop back on and bios shall work again
