Spontaneous iTunes actions

For the last week, the iMac seems possessed. iTunes would run spontaneously and play whatever is the first item under music (ABBA). Sometimes, it is triggered by connecting a device such as iPhone or iPad. I reloaded the latest iTunes for Mac to erase the previous one. IT still happens. ANy device connected will somehow synch more than once on its own. I ran the antivirus several time and as expected no virus. I am using Norton AV 11.
Any thoughts?

whatever bugs your Mac, it certainly is no virus - there currently aren't any that affect a Mac. more likely NAV is causing the problem(s) on your machine.
my recommendation is to get rid of NAV as soon as you can.
as for your issue, more often than not 3rd party plug ins or dashboard widget are causing iTunes to do +such things+. did you recently install any of those ?
you might want to try launching iTunes in _*Safe Mode*_ (which would disable 3rd party plug ins etc.).
another option would be *removing iTunes completely* (click here and follow the instructions), then reinstall it using the standalone installer from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
note this will not touch your media files, playlists, ratings, etc.
please post back with results !

  • Automator 2.1.1 iTunes Actions Set Info

I have several Automator programs that I've created and have been using successfully for several years. All of a sudden, two Automator Actions stopped working. They are "Set Info of  iTunes Songs" and "Set Options of iTunes Songs".
I found a discussion thread in MacWorld's website from over a year ago... something to do with iTunes 10 and version 4.6. You had to find the specified Action in the System Library, show package contents, open the info.plist and remove the version check.
Is there an Apple fix for this? Or, do you think something else has happened?

I had the problem where I got an unknown error when upgading from 3.1.3 to 4.0.1 last night. It put my phone into recovery & said that I had to restore it. Tried to twice but I still kept getting the unknown error message. Wasn't until I restarted my computer that it let me restore.
All of my music, videos, contacts, etc are fine. But I found that none of my apps were restored to the phone. So I had to go back through & manually drag each one back onto the iPhone in iTunes and then re-sync it. But now none of the apps will load or open. I have tried switching the phone off & back on a number of times but it hasn't helped.
Next I am going to try to restore again & see if that helps. From what I understand, the apps should have also been restored from the previous backup. Am not sure what happened in my case though

  • ITunes 10 + Automator. Where's "Play action?

After I updated to iTunes 10, I lost the most iTunes actions in Automator (primarily "Play").
iTunes system gives me an error that those codes do not exist and I should update my iTunes to 4.6 or higher...
    Any solutions?
    Thank you

The bad news is, iTunes 10 is missing the following actions:
    Add Songs to iPod
    Add Songs to Playlist
    Ask for Songs
    Change Case of Song Names
    Get Selected iTunes Items
    Get the Current Song
    Import Audio Files
    Import Files into iTunes
    New iTunes Playlist
    Pause iTunes
    Play iTunes Playlist
    Remove Empty Playlists
    Set Info of iTunes Songs
    Set iTunes Equalizer
    Set iTunes Volume
    Set Options of iTunes Songs
    Start iTunes Playing
    Start iTunes Visuals
    Stop iTunes Visuals
    Update iPod
The good news is, iTunes' AppleScript dictionary appears to still contain the ability to script all of these items, which means that it should be easy for now to create AppleScript actions to replicate these, and that it should at least be possible for these actions to return. Will they? I certainly hope so!

  • Import Files into iTunes

I've tried creating 4 or 5 different workflows and can not get the "Import Files into iTunes" action to work. This is only part of a bigger workflow that I want to create, but it's one of the most important steps that I can't seem to make work.
There is no error in the Automator log, it shows the action completed. But nothing gets added.
Can someone confirm that this action does indeed work in Snow Leopard 10.6.2 ?

    Try automator forum http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1261

  • Can Automator do this? (Move folder and THEN import to iTunes)?

I want to drop a music folder on a droplet and have it automatically moved to my Music directory and then the files in that moved directory added to iTunes. I do not want to have iTunes manage my music files for a number of reasons.
I tried to do it in Automater using the "Move Files" action and then the "Import Files Into iTunes" action, but that didn't work, it only moved the files. I'm missing something, as I'm guessing after the move it doesn't pass the directory info to the next action, but I'm a total Automater/Apple Script noob.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you might be able to give me.

    That should be very doable.
I think part of the issue you're facing is that automator needs to know the new location of the folders you moved, so you need to add another Get Specified Finder Items action before the Import Audio Files.
Your Automator action would look like this:
    Get Specified Finder Items
    (Add your drop folder)
    Move Finder Items
    (Select your music folder location)
    Get Specified Finder Items
(Add your new folder location - see note below)
    Import Audio Files
    (use the MP3 encoder)
This works just fine for me on my system, but I let iTunes manage my music folders and have fixed file locations for the drop, and let the system delete after import.
Some caveats: The MP3 encoder will use what ever you have set in iTunes for the bitrate, etc, so make sure iTunes is set where you want it.
I think another issue you're going to run into is that the process can't be completely automated since you're not using fixed folder locations. To use changing locations, you would open the Options button on Get action, check Show this action when the workflow runs. Then when you drop your files or run the automator, it will pop up a box asking you to point to the folder your new music is in. Not quite automatic, but unless you're going to let iTunes manage, I'm not sure how to do that. I'm certainly not automator expert.
You could probably come up with a very sophisticated applescript to do this, but I'm just learning applescript, so you'll have to get help there from someone else.
To make the automator run on the drop, google for instructions there.
Hope this at least gets you going in the right direction.

  • Automator hangs on simple iTunes-related script

    Hi folks,
Automator (v2.0.2) seems to hang on some very simple scripts involving iTunes. For example:
Get Selected ITunes Items -> Copy Finder Items (to Desktop)
will hang in perpetuity on my system, even if a single, small mp3 file is the only selection in iTunes.
On the other hand, if I use "Ask For Songs" and manually select the same mp3 file, the script works properly.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Mike

If you look in the description for the action, the input that the action is expecting and the result (output) of the action are listed. The output for the Get Selected iTunes Items is iTunes Items (an object that other iTunes actions can use), while the output for Ask for Songs is Files/Folders (an object that file handling actions can use). Automator 2 is pretty good at converting different object types, but not everything has a conversion action - apparently this is one of them.

  • What happened to my actions

The Apple support guys had me do an install in place and it caused some problems with a number of applications - and I have been reinstalling them as the problems become evident.
I went to run some automator workflows tonight and discovered that a lot of the basic actions in my workflows (mostly involving iTunes) were gone! There are in fact no longer any iTunes actions visible - although the Photoshop ones are there (presumably since I had to reinstall Photoshop after the install in place).
I just reinstalled iTunes - but still not actions available for iTunes, so scripts that would formerly play a playlist now do nothing but complain.
How do I get the missing iTunes automator library back?
    Will

Yes, just a bit earlier, I found my original OSX CD for the laptop, opened up the install package to find the package specifically for Automator and then installed it "by hand".
This restored all the "default actions". Other actions required reinstalling the associated application.
Why the "install in place" wiped out these actions, I have no idea.
But thankfully, the problem is solved.
Thanks for your help. That was in fact the solution.
    Will.

  • Launch iTunes, play specific song in iTunes, and then quit iTunes

    Hi,
I'm new to Automator, and would like to figure out how to do the following by clicking on a single icon...
    1. launch iTunes
    2. play a specific MP3 in iTunes (fifteen minutes of silence sandwiched between two meditation chimes)
    2. quit iTunes
I opened Automator and browsed through the iTunes actions, but couldn't find an easy way to do this.
I assume once I have a usable workflow, I would save it as an application, the icon of which I could store in my dock for the one-click access.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
    --Chris

    Hi,
Create a playlist containing just the mp3 you want to play.  Then try this workflow:
    - Launch Application (iTunes)
    - Get Specified iTunes Items (add that playlist here)
    - Play iTunes Playlist
    - Pause (pause for 900+x seconds, where x is how long the chimes take, and 900 is how many seconds are in 15 minutes)
    - Run AppleScript (delete everything and type: tell application "iTunes" to quit)
Save the workflow as an application (Save As... > Application), and you should have your one-click access dock icon.
    Hope it helps!

  • Create iTunes Workflow to "Skip When Shuffling?"

I've been searching the forums, but haven't found a response yet. I'm a novice at Automator, as I've just switched from Panther to Tiger. Is it possible to create a workflow to mark a series of "songs" (in my case, the list of iTrip frequencies) to "Skip When Shuffling" so that they don't show up in the Party Shuffle or play when shuffling all songs? It's a lot of "songs" to go through manually. Thanks!
    Curt

    ibosket,
I was able to accomplish the turning off of the iTrip frequencies by doing the following:
    Automater Actions
    1) Find Songs in iTunes Action(Find: Songs; Whose: Playlist is Library and Whose: Album is equal to iTrip
    2) Run AppleScript Action with the following AppleScript copied from the Script Editor and replacing the complete text in the Automator "Run AppleScript" action and not just where it says (* Your script goes here *).
    click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "iTunes"
    repeat with aTrack in input
set enabled of aTrack to false
    end repeat
    end tell
    return input
    end run</pre>

  • Copy an iTunes song using the Finder ?

    Hi List !
Is it possible to copy an iTunes song in a given folder with Automator ? The iTunes action Get iTunes Item (not sure of the name, I use the french version of Tiger) return iTunes Items, not iTunes Songs !
And the Finder action Copy...only accepts Files/Folders (and iTunes Songs), not iTunes Items.
Is there a way to do this ?

OK, I suppose this is not possible. I've made an automator action that does that but I still find it strange that standard actions can't achieve this...

  • BPM Formatting Help

OK, so I successfully downloaded and used MixMeister BPM Analyzer via Darwine to calculate plausable BPM values for my 3400+ mp3s. Unfortunately, MixMeister apparently doesn't conform to the id3 standard of storing BPM as an integer, and instead has recorded float values. I can see these values when opening the mp3 files using a text editor, but iTunes doesn't know what do to with them. Any suggestions for converting all these decimal BPM values into iTunes-friendly integers?

me too! Mixmeister has done the heavy lifting of BPM analysis on my 4500 songs, but iTunes is only seeing maybe 40% of them. I just need to strip the decimal point and any numbers after that. I thought Automator would help but I can't find any iTunes actions that even reference the BPM field.

  • Simple (you would think) Automator workflow

    Hi all,
I have been using Mac for the last 3 years. I have a very good knowledge of computers in general, Unix/Linux in particular but I have never used Automator. I would like to create a very simple application in Automator: when I click on the application icon I want to see a form in which I type the name of a song and as a result I want to see a window that contains all the music files that match that name.
I have no problem in creating this as a unix shell script and I know I can use spotlight (the problem with spotlight is that everytime I have to type the search string, click on Show All, then refine the search by setting Kind=Music etc.)
So I thought it would be a piece of cake to do it in Automator.
I'm using the action "Find Finder Items" with "Name Contains" AND "Kind is Audio". If I run this in automator I get the results I want (if I click on the Results tab). However, when I save it as Application and then double click on it, I get the input window in which I can specify the name of the songs I'm looking for (so far so good) but then nothing appears, the application seems to terminate correctly but I am never presented with the results.
I have tried to add a "Reveal Finder Items" after the first action but that's not what I want as it opens one window for each file that matches my search and each window shows all files, with the one I'm looking for highlighted.
What I need is something similar to spotlight, I want a window to open, showing all files that match. I know I can add more actions and for example copy all files that match into a specific folder then open the folder, but that's a dirty way of solving my problem and a bit of an overkill. Aliases would be slightly better, but still not exactly what I want.
This is driving me crazy, you would think it should be a very easy thing to accomplish with Automator...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA
    /Pippo

thanks, but it still doesn't do what I want.
    1) not all my music is in iTunes, so I can't use the Find in iTunes action
    2) adding a Choose from List (as you suggested) after the Find Finder Items now shows me a list of all matches, so that is an improvement, thanks, but I stil can't do anything with that. What I need is a Finder window with the result of the search so that I can simply QuickView the song (or copy it or whatever)
    3) using the Finder search is similar to using spotlight, it doesn't do what I want, I don't want to have to type each time that I'm only looking for songs.
I just want an Automator workflow that:
    1) asks for a file name
    2) searches my computer for audio files that match the name
    3) shows the result in a window where I can then work with the files.
it really bugs me that I can't make Automator perform such a simple workflow, I'm sure I'm missing some obvious action.
    please help
    TIA

  • New apple keyboard Fn keys don't work

    Hi,
Posting this in PowerMac G5 and OSX Tiger as I am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue.
I just recently bought a new aluminium apple keyboard and am very very happy. EXCEPT:
When I first plugged it in, all the hotkeys/fn keys (the default ones such as play/pause/skip track/volume/brightness) all worked fine... but I had 3rd party SizzlingKeys installed... that sprang into life, and suddenly all the Apple default key functions stopped working.
I uninstalled Sizzling keys, trashed all relevent files, restarted... nothing.
Tried to reset them via SystemPreferences... didn't work.
How can I make these come back to life?
    Thanks

I've used SizzlingKeys in the past. It was novel for a few months but conflicted with keyboard commands I was used to in other applications. The iTunes library on that computer is no longer used. However, I see that SizzlingKeys 1.7.2 is still installed. Preferences depict only two SizzlingKey options enabled: Play/Pause and Almost Mute. The rest have their checkboxes clicked off. Here, at least, there is no conflict with the Apple keyboard functions on that G4 computer running Panther.
It seems awfully odd that a removed application could still be causing a conflict. If SizzlingKeys is the culprit and nothing else worked, I (perhaps not you) would be inclined to reinstall it. Whatever iTunes actions are mapped to F1 through F4 and F7 though F12 can be disabled or changed within the SizzlingKeys Preference Pane. There is even an option to disable SizzlingKeys altogether. Should you then decide to remove it again, do so after disabling everything in the Preference Pane. Between this and the Keyboard Shortcuts button labeled "Restore Defaults" (Keyboard & Mouse Preference) the problem should be resolved.
(FYI: If you were using a notebook computer, there would be another option to toggle that requires the extra Fn key to the right of the Control key to be pressed for access to special Apple functions. But since you posted this in the G5 forum, this apparently doesn't apply.)

  • AppleTV connected to Mac Pro by 802.11n,  G5 on Ethernet can't see AppleTV

I hope someone can answer this one... In my house, I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station set up and broadcasting an open 802.11n (b and g compatible) wireless network. Connected to that network is my Mac Pro, which can see my AppleTV, and is set as its main source. Just to be clear, the AppleTV is connecting to the Airport Extreme base station, and NOT directly to my Mac Pro, by some kind of ad-hoc network.
My wife has a Power Mac G5, which is connected to the same Airport Extreme base station, via Ethernet, and it cannot see the AppleTV. I have iTunes 7.1.1 and Quicktime 7.1.5 installed, and I have iTunes set to search for AppleTV units, but no Apple TV is ever displayed by her iTunes.
I have the firewall on the PowerMac shut off, and have even tried messing with the Ethernet connection speed settings in Network System Prefs.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this? Does anybody have any good advice on how to fix it? I have done everything short of reset my AppleTV and Airport Extreme, and I really don't want to have to do that, then set my network back up.
    Thanx!

Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Several other Macs, iPods, AppleTV

So, you're saying that the AppleTV will only ever appear in the list of available AppleTV devices on the initial host copy of iTunes?!Yes, once the "host" is selected. However, according to another poster, it should appear in the list of all LAN connected platforms when you initiate the "Connect to New Itunes" action and then disappear from non-selected iTunes lists once a selection is made.
If so, how do you add additional sources.Normally as explained previously. However, this assumes your wife's connection to the LAN was properly made. Can, for instance, the TV device see her computer as a "streaming" source?
I go through the 'Connect to New iTunes' option, and the authentication number appears on my TV screen, but nothing ever indicates that my wife's Power Mac has recognized the AppleTV, or vice versa. If the device doesn't show up in her iTunes at this point, I would likely try turning off the Airport card in your Mac Pro and see if this makes a difference. (I assume here that when you say the TV is connected to your mac Pro via the Airport Extreme, you mean wirelessly and not via an ether connection between extreme and TV since anything plugged into the TV ether connector would override any wireless connection attempts. (As a double check, you can look at your Settings > Network page on the TV.) Since I only have one computer/TV combination and it is such a pain switching back and forth between wired and wireless connections, I just leave mine connected by a Cat 6 cable I already had. Basically, everyone on your LAN needs to connect wirelessly or everyone nees to connect wired since you can't mix connections to the TV. In any case, if you cannot see/connect her computer with TV when yours is "disconnected," then would concentrate efforts here as it would appear she has a network problem.
