Spontaneous shut down and possible kernel problems?

Hi,
So I was using my macbook pro today (running OSX 10.8.2, bought spring 2010) and the screen froze. The screen image changed- it looked like someone ran thier fingers through a wet painting. I force restarted the computer with the power button and about 10 minutes later the computer shut down on it's own with no warning (I was typing and the screen went black.) I attempted to start the computer again by pressing the power button. The computer eventually turned on when I held the power button down. A black grey screen appeared and the computer made a plusing, low toned beeping noise. Since I was in a class, I was not able to determine the frequencey of the beeps (just trying to get it to turn off). I held down the power button and it eventually stopped after about 3 minutes.
I was able to turn on my computer after class and it has been running fine (if a bit slow) for the past hour. I checked the console log and the report for the restart and both cite "kernel panics" (i.e.
Kernel stack memory corruption detected"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.18.24/libkern/stack_protector.c:37).
I've been reading about kernel panics on the support community but I'm not sure what to do next to solve this issue. I had similar problems at the exact same time last week with the screen and shutting off but I attributed the forced shut down to low battery (the computer just turned off and then ran slowly for the rest of the day once I got it plugged in).
Thanks!

Try a safe boot, hold the shift key and power up, this will take a little loner than normal, hold the shift till you see the progress bar. See if it works normal, if it does than it is more than likely some 3rd party software. Then restart normal and check your console for panics. That would be your isssue.  You can also start holding command R and restoring from utililities.  Back up before you do anything.

After logic board replacement and software update, MacBook Pro is spontaneously shutting down and preventing restart. Inconsistent ability to restart after multiple tries. What is going on?

Hard drive sensor or logic board failure.
Try a SMC Reset, only thing I can help.

My MBP (2007 intel) freezes or spontaneously shuts down and crackling comes from the speakers. Sometimes this happens together all at once? It happens with and without peripherals. Has this happened to anyone else?
It does not seem to be linked to a specific program or periferal use.
I would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.

Run the Apple Hardware Test and swee if any issues are discovered.  Also a SMC and PRAM resets may help.

  • Mini spontaneous shut-down and application shut-down problem

    Help!
    I've searched. I've read. I can't find the answer!
After I updated my firmware several weeks ago (to SMC 1.3f4), I've had problems with spontaneous shut-down of the computer, and a frustrating application shut-down issue (Safari, Mail, Word--you name it!).
I tried to find the other firmward update from last summer, which I read about in several posts from July/August, but the link is dead (Mac Mini Firmware update 1.0.1).
Coincidentally, after an office break-in two weeks ago, I FileVaulted my computer. I thought my problem must have to do with that, but all the posts I can find here are about this firmware thing.
Should I/can I reinstall the SMC 1.3f4 update? Is there some secret to the no-longer-available 1.0.1 update?
Can anyone help me? (I would certainly appreciate it!)

  • Rsd? shut down and mouse pointer problems

    hello there
So, last week I went to the Carrefour Laval apple store to go check out my macbook because it had shut down 3 times in a row for no reason. The genius checked everthing out, ran some tests, and said everything was a-okay, that I might have simply just xperienced a random, insignificant crash. But, yesterday my computer shut down again as I was surfing the internet. I waited about 1 minute and powered it up again. everything seemed fine. so, about 1 hour ago, im checking my emails, when i go up to the toolbar to select a different website, when my mouse pointer seems to start disappearing on and off constantly. so i close my internet window and this weird loud and quick clicking sound comes from my computer. I open up another safari window, and the sound stops. and this happens over and over again as i open and close safari windows. then 10 minutes later, i am watching a dvd when my computer shuts down again! what is going on? Im so tired of this. i would like to have some advice before i go see the genius again. the thing is i cant reproduce the problem for him, it just happens randomly....
    please help me!

Hi there I am having the same problem. I've been experiencing it often over the past month. First thing you should do is download the latest updates and make sure the firmware is updated which you can get from apple.ca/support. If that doesn't work then take it into a certified repari center that is authorized by Mac. In Toronto I go to CPUsed, Carbon or MacLibrary for repairs. My macbook is still under warranty so I am going to take it in. I am also going to extend my warranty for three years. These intels are great but it is the first year so expect problems.
    Cheers!

  • Shut down and wake up problem

    Frustrating problems with my T410i (2518) with Win7 64bit.
First I can't get it shut down propertly, when shuting down from  inside windows it starts to shut down but never finish.
It stays with processor fan active and some of the LED's, like WiFi and Batery also the fingerprint reader led is active in green. Only way to shut down is to press and hold the power button, or just take off the batery.
Secondly, and most probably some how related to above, if the PC goes in to Sleep/Hibernate there is no way I can wake it up. Just to shut down like abowe and start from begining.
And more stratnge is that it goes down even if the current power scheme is set to _never_ shut down anything.
I tried to follow old post in the forum regarding similar problems but still the same...
System drivers is ans long as I can updated to latest versions.
The only thing I havent been sucessful with is the patch KB981112 - refused by Windows with the message "Application refused on this PC".
Any one got a hint of how to proceed?
    PS
Lenovo support has noting to say, except > "just make sure every thing is updated..."

Did you download the right version of the patch? There is one for x86 and one for x64 os versions. This is the right one you should try: 408196_intl_x64_zip.exe

  • HT3964 What if  a mac pro spontaneously shuts down and won't restart

Mac pro 2012. Happily working then stops. All attached powered devices like hard drives remain on. Not due to dodgy ac power because it's behind a 2kv ups with constant sine wave output. The ups looks like its barely ticking over.
Reset the pmu according to instructions but it remains dead. Tried other house circuits, new ac adaptor lead etc. it's like a fuse has gone, though I doubt such a thing exists.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA
    Tim

Sudden power-down can be caused by processor overheating, but that generally shuts off the fans and drives all at once.
You may be describing a sudden graphics card failure, possibly due to overheating. Make sure some warm air is still coming out the fan port on the back of the card, if so equipped.
In most parts of the world, you can remove the side door with the Mac Pro 65 lb tower still running, and check whether fans are all running.
CAUTION: In the EU, the European commission has determined that you are too stupid not to put your finger in the fans, and the Mac Pro is so dangerous it cannot be sold in the EU until a new model is released. So this advice is not to be used in Europe.
Also, be certain that any bananas you buy are not too strongly curved -- those are illegal in Europe. Unfortunately, you will be forced to fend for yourself when using refillable Olive Oil bottles in restaurants -- they were unable to develop a consensus to ban them outright for the good of the public. So please, be extremely careful!

  • HT6147 I phone 5 spontaneously shuts down and re starts, does this at least 3 times a day

My I phone 5 always reboots itself how can I fix this, it happens around about 3 times every day. Mostly at night when it is on the charger.

A couple of quick points that might help.  You could try a restore.  Also think about deleting one or more of those apps that you are having problems with, but backup the device first.  A hard reset might help: hold the home and off buttons together and keep them pressed until the apple appears onscreen: then do it again.
As to the proximity of ports, have you thought of an extension cable for the broadband stick?

  • Random shut down and wonky touchpad/button

    Hello!
I've noticed that for the past few months, when I begin to type something, I often have problems with the text highlighting unexpectedly. Sometimes what I've been typing gets deleted, other times I'm taken back to a few pages prior. I have problems clicking on links at times. Either the button wants to click on 12 different things at once, or it doesn't seem to want to click at all, just highlighting. It's a constant struggle with the touchpad button.
About a week ago my mac also started to spontaneously shut down. Possibly when it gets too hot? I can't seem to find a pattern to it, and it's shut down on its own both plugged in and on battery power.
My hard drive is about 2 years old now, but the computer is 3. Is this the result of too much use or can something be done to troubleshoot?

I've had that random shut-down problem for a week now. It did it again a few minutes ago. I thought it might have been a heat-related problem, but I have the back of the computer propped up to increase the ventilation on the rear.
I've had that sticky mouse problem several months now, ever since the local shop replaced the trackpad-plate. I didn't ask the shop to replace; I took the computer in to replace the failed hard drive. But the plate had been chipping around the edges, and apparently Apple had a secret warranty on the plate, so the shop replaced the chipped cover for free. Shortly afterward the mouse started sticking and acting weird. I think I have found a work-around by not placing my thumbs on the mouse. The mouse seems to be elevated now; when I close the lid while the computer is on, the pressure on the mouse causes the computer to activate whatever the cursor is on.

I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I am trying to use the trial creative cloud software on a PC windows 8.1 - I've downloaded and removed Photoshop CC 2014 two times - every time I open the file it says there is a problem and it shuts down and closes. I can open indesign and maybe other apps but photoshop no. Any ideas?

I don't think I can access the crash report? Excuse the ignorant questions I'm about to make am a relative tech novice.
Soo - as mentioned every time I open photoshop it crashes - it just says there's an error and the program will shut down and if there's a solution windows will notify me. Then nothing...
I've tried to look in photoshop files for the detailed crash report & the system event viewer but cannot find a file with those names. I've also looked in the windows files for files with those names but cannot find them either - so I don't know where to look.
    Any guidance would be great.

  • Problems shutting down and starting up

my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.3) doesn't shut down when I want it to but goes into a coma periodically.
when I use "Shut Down" every once in a while via Apple menu, the machine doesn't appear to actually shut down. when I open it or got to it the next time, it's in a state of sleep and I can't awaken. when I finally get it to shut down manually and restart, a dialogue saying "you shut down due to a problem" arises next startup. this whole chain is odd to me. I'm a long-time Mac user (IIvx, iMac and iBook) and I don't recall the startup problems but maybe I've just forgotten.
moreover, and related, sometimes when I simply shut the screen to put MacBook Pro to sleep, it won't reawaken. clicking space bar or pushing mouse pad have no effect. so then I have to manually shut down by holding power button, and then restart.
in the old days, we would "zap the PRAM" when there were freezing or startup problems. (I don't even remember how to do that, as my iBook which I had for ten years never gave me these problems). do I zap the PRAM? how? any other ideas?
    Thank you!

    brutus775,
if you boot into Safe mode, does your MacBook Pro still go into periodic comas?
With MacBook Pros, one “zaps the NVRAM” (or “resets the SMC”) instead.

I stumbled upon the solution. In addition to downloading Creative Cloud, I needed to go back to the website and  download trials for the programs I want to use--Photoshop and Lightroom. Once I did that, I was in business. Would save trouble if that was made clear on the download site.
    Thanks
