Spontaneous Shut-off problem (power supply?)

Hi-- I have a first generation G5 iMac.
Last year, there was about a week in which it would spontaneously shut off. I read there were possibly some power supply issues with the early units, so I took it in to an Apple Store hoping they would diagnose such a problem and fix it; they ran it for a couple hours, said there were no problems, and sent me home. Over the last month, it has started happening again, and has happened at least seven times. I do regular backups and I've been lucky, but I know one of these days it's going to happen while I'm doing something important. I wouldn't mind taking it back to the Apple Store, but it's not an easy trek, and it happens so unpredictably that I think the odds of getting it to do it at an appointed time is slim, in which case I'm afraid they're just going to send me home again.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has dealt with such a problem, what the fix was, and how I might convince the tech guys to delve a little deeper even when they don't actually witness the event.
Thanks,
dave

Dave, if, in fact,as Charlie suggests, the cause of
your shutdowns is a variable power supply, it should
easily be cured by the addition of a Universal Power
Supply
While an excellent idea (I wouldn't have a computer without connecting it to a UPS any more), a UPS won't necessarily solve the problem of the unexpected shutdowns. My iMac was on a UPS and it still would shut down.
There are two kinds of UPSs. The most common is a battery backup. Most of the time, the computer is actually getting power from the mains. If the UPS detects a failure of the mains, it'll switch to providing the computer with battery power. But there will be a very small fraction of a second where there will be not power at all supplied to the computer. If the computer's power supply is healthy, it should be able to bridge that tiny interruption until it starts getting power from the UPS. But if it's not healthy enough, the computer will shut down.
The second kind of UPS is what you are describing, where the UPS provides power to the computer at all times. These aren't as common, though, and are more expensive. I'm not sure if APC even sells this kind. At least, I couldn't find any at their web site that I could be sure were this kind.
When I had the shutdown problems with my iMac, I initially thought it might be a problem with the UPS, since the iMac would shut off if the power was interrupted long enough for the UPS to notice. I could easily test it by just pulling the plug going to the UPS. Earlier, I had been able to do that without problems in order to test a script I was writing to shut down the computer in case the of a power failure (for some reason, the software built into OS X to do this wasn't working right).
But when I was having the shutdowns, the iMac would shut off right away as soon as I pulled the plug on the UPS. Luckily, I was able to test my UPS at work on another computer and try a UPS from work on my computer and rule out the UPS. Now that my power supply unit has been replaced, the iMac will once again survive the switch from the mains to the UPS's battery.

  • Shut Off problem / Zen Nano P

    Hi.
After I bought my Zen Nano Plus it doesn?t work right anymore. It allways shut off after a while. Unfortunately it sometimes even won?t restart. So often I have to wait for hours before I can restart the player. I discovered that it works if I connect the player via USB-cable to pc. after diconnecting the cable, the player starts without any problems. I use alsmann-accus. And I haven?t any wma?s on the player. Just mp3?s!
Tried the newest firmware-update .2.03e. But nothing is better now!
I?ve heard about users with the .03.02 firmware, which havn?t any shut off-problems. I tried to flash my player with these fw, but its seems to be impossible. Is there any solution for flashing Zen with older firmware?
Thanks in advance for any comments or solutions!

lol you sound like you have decent tech knowledge by the description in your post but I have to ask anyway. You say it keeps turning off after a while, and only works once you plug it into your comp. Is the battery dead =P? I mean that would explain why it works when you plug it in... other than that, when it shuts down does it do it like you were turning it off, or just go blank.

  • MSI GT70 2PE Pro Shuts off after power up and sleep mode, then works

I got this laptop less than a year ago and I am kinda getting upset about my decision buying it. It is the GT70 Dominator Pro with the GTX880M graphics card.
Only thing I did was install a SSD drive for my main drive and use the 1TB drive that it came with as a storage drive. Everything was working perfectly for about 4 months without any issues.
My problem started with the laptop shutting off in the middle of playing Watch dogs and wouldnt boot to windows, so i went to the BIOS and found out for some reason it changed my primary drive to the storage so i changed it back and all was good. After about a month it similar thing happened but this time I couldnt even get to the BIOS, after pressing the F10 or whatever it is for BIOS the computer freezes in a black screen.
I contacted MSI and sent it out for warranty, they had to change the whole motherboard as it was not serviceable (Issue was a faulty MB).
Last week the laptop started acting up again, here is my issue. When powering it on the fan and light comes on but after couple of seconds it turns off, then powering it on for 2nd time it works. This happens 80% of the time, i have to turn it on twice before it works.  Even more frustrating thing is when it is at Sleep mod, I press the power to wake it up, so it does but before getting to windows screen it shuts off.
I was wondering if anyone have similar issue like mine or know what could cause this. My tower PC that i built have a MSI board and graphic card thats why I went with their laptop but I had pretty bad experience with it so far and its not a cheap laptop either. I might have to go through another warranty work if it keeps giving me the issue.

    Try update IRST driver.

  • Pavilion dv7-3165dx Notebook shuts off @30% power

I purchased this laptop that I love and runs amazingly but started having a problem when the power isn't plugged in and running on battery. If the power goes down to 30% it just shuts off as if I had been pressing the power button! I checked the corresponding power options and is set to "Do nothing" when power level reaches critical and critical is set to 7%. For some reason the computer just overrides my settings and powers off at 30% charge level. I have left power management to hp recommended settings (Original) and have not tempered with anything else. Any ideas on how to resolve what appears to be a software issue as it is too much of a coincidence that it is precisely at 30% that it powers off and I'm afraid it will shorten the life of my HDD!!!

Now it's happening at 50%!!! It just shuts off at exactly 50% power and am just frustrated out of my mind. I have restored to HP recommended and made sure the pc does nothing if power is under 7%. I am out of iddeas please help

  • System Boot problems / Power supply? Antec Neopower.

I've had this system for around 2 weeks now and as I've posted in other threads I have a occasional problem getting past the windows splash screen, if I don't get in the first time if I reset I usually boot in no problem.
It's a very odd problem that is really stumping me..  I kind of think it's raid related? but could if possibly be my power supply? I have a Antec NeoPower 480w which I carried over from my intel system and figured it would be fine?!
But since I've been reading these forums it seems as though the AMD64 systems are quite picky when it comes to the amps issue.  Would it be a good idea to replace this power supply or could it possibly be something else?  Thanks for any help..

Most likely it is the board.
I have to boot up twice to get a POST everytime my system is cold.
I thought it's my PSU too and went for one of the best: OCZ Powerstream 520W
Still the same problem. My problem isn't that bad since i just have to power on, off on to get it running but it's still showing how bad/bug-ridden  this board is.

  • Satellite A200 won't shut down when power supply is connected

The Satellite A200 just shuts down, if the power cable is disconnected before shutting down. Otherwise the notebook shuts down and restarts immediately (max 5 seconds between shut down and restart).
Does anybody got the same strange problem?

    Hi Thomas
You should definitely contact the ASP in your country. Maybe its something wrong with the power supply electronic on the notebooks motherboard.
As John said the replacement should be done for free because the A200 is a new series and the warranty should be valid.
    Good luck

  • MacBook shuts off when power cord is disconnected

2007 White MacBook shuts off (not shutdown) when power cord is removed. Battery shows 98% charge. Any ideas? I plug AC power back in and it reboots when start button pushed. This problem just started tonight.
    HELP!

Ronan... in your case, it looks like it's just time for a new battery. Your battery should hold a full charge for up to about 300 cycles. At that point, you should expect a decline in the charge capacity. As your battery has over 600 cycles, it sounds like it's had a good life. As you've had your MacBook for less than two years, it sounds like you are possibly using more cycles than necessary. You should try to use your MacBook while plugged in the majority of the time... but occasionally use it on battery (going through one or two cycles a week). A full cycle is a full charge and discharge. For example, if your battery is at 100% and you let it discharge to 90% and then you charge it back up to 100%, that is 1/10th of a cycle. You would need to do that 10 times to equal one cycle. If you started at 100% and let your battery discharge to 50% and then charged it up to full, that would be 1/2 cycle... doing this twice would equal one cycle. The number of cycles is the primary indicator of the life of your battery. It sounds like you are using your MacBook mostly on battery (with over 600 cycles in less than two years). After you replace your battery, try to run it plugged in for the majority of the time if possible. Many people are mistakenly under the impression that they should fully discharge their battery before charging it. This is not the case with Lithium Ion/Polymer batteries. This was the case with Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (much older rechargeable battery technologies). It seems many people still feel that the memory effect of the older battery technologies applies to newer battery technologies. Just the opposite is true.

  • Can I make 3GS shut off when power removed?

I'm using my retired 3GS as an iPod in my car, it's being powered by an outlet that shuts off when the car is turned off.  I ran my original iPhone the same way but when I turned the car off, the power to the iPhone turned off and the iPhone would shut off.  My 3GS won't do this and I'm wondering if there's some setting to make this happen.  I surely can't find it.
    Thanks

Actually, I think I understand what was happening.  For my original iPhone connection, I had some old Belkin device that plugged into the cigarette lighter of my car but the AUX jack also plugged into that housing.  I'm betting somehow that old unit would make the iPhone think the connector had been completely removed, sense that and shut off.  Just like when you unplug it.
That old Belkin unit wouldn't work with my iPhone 3GS so I swapped it out for a different cabling set up and it's only the power that's switched off.
    Thanks,
    bo

  • MacBook shuts off without power cord, even when battery is charged

I bought my MacBook in October. I've been treating it really delicately. But for some reason, it will not run without the power cord plugged in (as of yesterday morning).
If I pull it out, it shuts down. If I try to start it up without the cord, it shuts down. It gets about 2-3 seconds before it just shuts off. (It will run in sleep mode without the cord plugged in.)
And for a brief time yesterday evening, it worked without the cord plugged in.
This is my first Mac and I have no idea what is going on.

This is a recently common issue with Macbook Lith-ion batteries.
You have a defective battery, although AppleTech defines defective as a battery below 350 cycle counts. That's the lifetime of your $130 battery, which may average between 6-13 months depending on how you use it.
Some customers have had to buy 3 batteries in the past 2 years because AppleCare doesn't cover consumable items, eg. batteries.
check consumer comments at http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?fnode=h ome/shopmac/macaccessories/power&revw=MA561LL/A
I'm hoping Apple will realize that a $130 macbook battery with a 350 cycle count lifetime, doesn't live up to "Apple" standards. Lith-ion batteries are known to have a 2-3 year lifetime not 6-13 months.
Customers shouldn't have to purchase AppleCare only to realize they have to continuously purchase new batteries every 6-13 months.
This is truly a manufacturer defect in my personal opinion.

  • My computer has been freezing and then emitting a consistent beeping until I shut off the power. It has been getting really hot and the fan gets really loud. This has been going on for months. What's going on?

I just had my macbook pro checked out and all of it's systems restarted to solve its beeping and freezing problem. However, it is still shutting itself down when I close the lid and becoming very hot.  When I open the lid again the screen is black and I have to continually hold down the power button in order to turn it back on. Does anyone know why this is happening?

  • G5 2Ghz Powermac shuts off at power on, unless I hold the button

    G5 Dual 2 Ghz, 4 GB RAM ATI X 800 Xt.
Have had it for almost one year, no problems.
Now when I hit the power button to turn it on, it immediately powers off after chime.
However, IF I hold the power button, it will boot to some firmware prompt wherein I must type "mac-boot" and it boots and runs fine.

Many boot-up issues like that can be solved by resetting the SMU. Follow the instructions on this page for resetting the SMU on your Mac:
