Spool with rman script

Hi,
I have this backup script below on a windows 2003 server.
Works fine except my spool doesn't work. I have always a file with 0Kb created.
I don't understand why because the echo commmand is on.
What can be the problem ?
spool log to g:\backup_full_spool.log
set echo on
connect target rman/rman@mybase
backup database plus archivelog delete input;
delete noprompt obsolete;
spool log off
set echo off

Another way to do this would be to have the output of the rman command redirected to a log file.

    You can use the dbconsole to schedule your backup script. It is quite easy and you can have it show you the sql used to create the job.

    my plan is the following:
    - at night i would like to make a backup of the database, archivelogs, control file and spfile. then delete the archivelogs on disk.
    - during the day i would like to make every hour, a backup level 1, archivelogs and crontrol file.
    my questions are:

    Hi Alanm,
    Right now the DB is generating many archives, that doesn't mean that we cant adapt the script in the future if less archives are generated.
    By saying "You don't have to make the archive log script an incremental 1 backup" you mean that, since we are already making a backup at night to the archives, theres no need to make them also during the incremental 1?
    and for the rest, do you thing the script is ok?

    Hello Guru's,
    I have been having soem trouble running a successful hot full rman backup nightly.
    We max our CPU load whenever our RMAN takes too long and conflicts with a Legato tape backup. I have a development server that I attempted to get a consistent backup time duration that is rock solid as to not conflict with the Legato backup time.
    I just found out about duration with RMAN scripts here is my code:

    It completes the backup, but does not use the 1 hour allocated- it only uses 15 minutes on average and creates many files instead of normally three backup files.
    Here is the results from querying the v$rman_status table for operation,status,start_time:

    RMAN appears to have only taken 15 minutes to create the files, why do I have a completed timestamp from v$rman_status of 1513???
    Please advise and comment, I am just learning RMAN.

    Try to remove the DURATION option in your script.

    Hello,
    there is no controlfile autobackup in 8i RMAN. You must copy controlfile on your own, e.g. SQL 'ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO file_name' or use eqiv. rman command - please check documentation.

  • RMAN script errors out for some DB's

    I have a single RMAN script that uses env variables to execute RMAN for two databases. It runs fine. I cloned the two DB's (changed DBID's), all four are on the same host. Now I try to use same script for all four. I receive an error when trying to run against the cloned databases. Here is script:

    Can to be explicitly or with 'export sid' in your script.

  • Standby db in R/W mode with RMAN

    Hello,
    I have a test environment that I have a physical non-managed standby database created in a virtual machine. I would like to use a physical standby database for read/write testing and reporting. I've been implementing the Data Guard Scenarios and tried to see if I can revert the activated database back to a physical standby database. However, I keep receiving the following error when I try to open the standby in read only mode:
    ORA-16004: backup database requires recovery
    ORA-01194: file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent
    ORA-01110: data file 1: 'C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\ORCL\SYSTEM01.DBF'
    Note: The standby db starts up as follows:
    startup nomount pfile=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_2\database\initORCLstdby.ora;
    alter database mount standby database;
    Once every x minutes, a batch job ships the logs from the primary to the secondary and runs the following:
    connect / as sysdba
    spool c:\scripts\logapply.log
    alter database recover automatic standby database until cancel;
    alter database recover cancel;
    Here's the steps I've done:
    1. On the standby database, query the V$DATABASE view and record the current SCN of the standby database:
    SQL> SELECT CURRENT_SCN FROM V$DATABASE;
    CURRENT_SCN
    1804721
    2. This step didn't work/isn't necessary:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-16136: Managed Standby Recovery not active
    3. Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target and create an incremental backup from the current SCN of the standby database that was recorded in step 1:
    RMAN> connect target "system/password"

    RMAN> BACKUP INCREMENTAL FROM SCN 1804721 DATABASE FORMAT 'C:\tmp\ForStandby_%U' tag 'FOR STANDBY';
    4. Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target, and catalog all incremental backup pieces:
    RMAN> CATALOG START WITH 'c:\tmp\ForStandby_';
    5. On the primary database, switch logs so the SCN of the restore point (created in step 1) will be archived on the physical standby database and ship it to the standby database:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
    6. Activate the physical standby database:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ACTIVATE STANDBY DATABASE;
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT FORCE;
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
    Make any write changes on the activated standby database.
    7. Revert the activated database back to a physical standby database.
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT FORCE;
    Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target and apply incremental backups
    Open another session for RMAN:
    RMAN> RECOVER DATABASE NOREDO;
    Back to SQL session
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE CONVERT TO PHYSICAL STANDBY;
    SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    I then run a batch file that automatically start the standby database and recover from the shipped archive logs:
    startup nomount pfile=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_2\database\initORCLstdby.ora;
    alter database mount standby database;
    SQL> alter database recover automatic standby database until cancel;
    alter database recover automatic standby database until cancel

    And how do you think you will conserve disk space with RMAN ?
    Stop and think about it : How can you revert a database AFTER you have Opened
    it Read/Write ? You need to flashback it OR restore it from a backup taken before
    the OPEN.
    So, you could have taken a backup to Tape or to alternate disk before OPENing the
    database. The backup to alternate disk can be via Flashback Recovery area or
    a regular RMAN (compressed, you want ?) backup. In the second case, you wouldn't
    be using a Flashback mechanism but a simple backup and restore method.

  • How to store the value into variable and access it in RMAN script

    We have been getting this type of request and it is not possible via RMAN to do that.
    BUT--You could write a sql/plus script to query your variable and produce the RMAN script with the new value.

  • RMAN Script

    Hi all,
    I'm a complete novice at Oracle and scripting, so please go easy. I've tried searching for the answer to this, but to completely honest I probably wouldn't recognise the answer if it was staring me in the face.
    Here's the dilemma:
    I've recently taken on some oracle servers from a user who has moved on. I know nothing about Oracle, and to be honest until something goes wrong (touch wood) the only real maintainance I'm involved in is clearing the archivelogs.
    I've played around with batch files, but to no avail. The commands we currently run each week in the cmd window are:
    RMAN
    connect target system/manager@database
    delete archivelog until time 'sysdate-2';
    Y
    exit
    And that's it. It's a bit of a tedious task as we have around 30 databases, and their must be an easier way of doing this with scheduled scripts.
    Any guidance for dummies would be hugely appreciated.

  • RMAN Script is not allocating channels

    I have a customer who is running a Solaris Server with Oracle 9i and is trying to backup using an RMAN script to define the channels to back up to through Networker.
    The script is as follows:

    allocate channel t2 type "sbt_tape";
    send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER=XXXX,NSR_DATA_VOLUME_POOL=Default)';
    sql 'alter system archive log current';

    backup
    filesperset 20
    archivelog all
    delete input;
    release channel t1;
    release channel t2;
    Normally there are 3 channel allocations, but for some reason this does not work. He can only get 1 channel to work at a time which is impacting Backup Performance.
    There are no errors logged in the log files which is also odd. The device parallelism is 4 under Networker
    The version of Networker is 7.1
    Anyone else had any similar issues - I have been scratching my head on this for a while, or if anyone has any ideas on how to troubleshoot this I would appreciate any help

    Thanks for the help.
    The command has finished now and I didn't get a chance to check the ps -ef command.
    As you see in my original post, I am using nohup to run the script in the background and its sending its output to nohup.out file. But in the content of nohup.out file, there is no mention of report generated by RMAN regarding how many blocks it found. Output is as follows:

    We have decided to abandon user managed hot backups and go with RMAN. Could you critizize the following approach and see if we are missing anything? I am making whole database backup and controlfile and archivelogs. I am using RMAN catalog.

    5. Is it customary to delete archive logs via RMAN script if, say, my policy is to keep it on the file system for 7 days?

    You didnot mention the db version, assumed it's 10g.
    If you planned to schedule this job at os level, you might use crontab (unix). The snapshot controlfile config can set with catalog once, so it's not needed to include in your backup script. Like wise your retention can set as "recovery window of 7 days".

    set log to '/home/oracle/rmanbkp.log';

    ==> you might check in the logfile for ORA- and RMAN- errors.

    I use to schedule this job either by OEM or crontab using rman script file.

    RMAN will do auto sync with controlfile.
    5. Is it customary to delete archive logs via RMAN script if, say, my policy is to keep it on the file system for 7 days?
    Upon successful backup you may delete the archivelogs or you might decide to keep it for 7 days and then delete by applying "delete obsolete" command.
