Sporadic Disconnect to AppleTV

Just wondering if anyone is having a similar issue with AirPlay and AppleTV. Once in a while, I'll lose connectivity from my iPad to my AppleTV via AirPlay. In other words, I lose the AirPlay icon so I cannot stream any media to AppleTV. However, I still have WiFi connectivity so I can access the rest of my network and also the Internet.
The only way to resolve this issue is to disable WiFi and re-enable. Shortly thereafter, I regain the ability to stream to AppleTV. I haven't ruled out my network just yet, but it just seems connectivity is lost temporarily between the AppleTV and iPad.

I'm seeing the same thing on my iPad2 with iOS 5 and fully updated Apple tv
My apple tv is connected via Ethernet and I don't experience the same sporadic disconnects when I use my MacBook air with wireless to the same apple tv
Did you ever figure out what was going on?
Thanks

  • Mac Mail, sporadic disconnect

    iMac Intel (21.5-inc, Late 2012)
    8GB RAM
    1TB HDD
    Intel Core i5 2.70GHz
    Mac OS X (10.8.5, Build 12F45)
Mac Mail sporadically disconnects from Office 365 Exchange Server. User also has Gmail account setup in Mac Mail, but does not see the issue with this account. When Mail does disconnect from Office 365, it will reconnect on its own when user tries to send an email. This happens on user's iMac (details above) AND his MacBook Air. These two systems are used in two different locations (laptop at home, iMac on site). This leads me to believe it is not a network connectivity issue. I have rebuilt the prefs, Mail folder (~/Library/Containers/com.mail.apple); by rebuilt I mean, completely trashed all the Mail folder and reset everything up from scratch. I also reset the sync services, and I THOUGHT that worked, but the issue ended up coming back.
I realize is this is *likely* an exchange issue, BUT this it the only person experiencing this issue on our campus. If necessary, I will be submitting a ticket to Apple and Microsoft about this, but wanted to see if anyone here has any ideas.
    Thanks!

    Was this ever solved?

  • Error: Got minus one from a read call, sporadic disconnections...

    Hello,
I am running JSP apps on Tomcat hitting against Oracle 10g DB. They have been working great. However, recently I am experience some bazzare events. Sporadically, webpages are only displaying partial result or even nothing from DB calls. When I checked the Tomcat log, I saw a bunch of the following error messages.
java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Got minus one from a read call
I've checked network connection (by ping and tnsping) between the webserver and the DB server, and everything looked good.
Someone said running TOAD on the client machine can cause such sporadic disconnections. Indeed turning off TOAD did reduce the number of errors. However, when I tried to load up a same page from two different web brower instances, I still get the partial results on both pages.
Does anyone know what is going on? It looks like my app is not waiting enough to get the entire data back. Is there anyway I can do that?
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Sporadic disconnects with E4200v2 router

I just bought a linksys 4200v2 router and I still get disconnects every so often.... usually disconnects for about 30 secs then comes back online.  When it disconnects, it disconnects all devices on the wireless network router... laptops, iphones, etc..
I have tried adjusting some settings in the router but I simply don't know enough to know what I'm doing
Network mode: Mixed (same as 5ghz)
    SSID: different from 5ghz
Security Mode: WPA2/ WPA Mixed Mode (same as 5ghz)
Channel Width: 20 mhz only (40 for 5ghz)
    Channel: 1 (auto for 5ghz)
SSID Broadcast: yes (same for 5ghz)
How can I stop being disconnected from the internet?  It's really frustrating.
I have inssider and I checked to see what channel my neighbors are using and all of them are using 6 or 11 so I decided to use channel 1 for 2.4 ghz.
I have a ~3000 sq ft home with 3 levels (basement, first, second). We do some work in the basement and second floor... most is done on the first.
I don't know how I can solve this issue..... my modem and router are next to the computer.

The placement of the router plays a great part when it comes to wireless signal. It is best to place the router in the central part of your house as well as in an open and well-ventilated area. Try not to place the router too close the modem or any wireless devices since the 18 inch radius around the router is considered as dead zone. Try to isolate further as well by connecting your computer directly to the modem as what sabretooth advised. Observe the connection and check if there will be dropouts. If there is then you might have to call your internet service provider and check the connection from their end. If behind modem the connection is You may also try changing the wireless settings on the router. You may try the following on 2.4Ghz network: channel width: 20MHz only; channel: use the best channel as per inSSIDer; security: wpa2 personal.

  • OS X Yosemite WiFi Still Sporadically Disconnecting Even After Update

I have a late-2013 MacBook Pro Retina. I've had Yosemite on it for a while now, and am now only facing this.
I know a lot of other people in the community have had this issue, and I know there was a recent update that fixes it, but it's just not letting up.
There are moments when I find myself turning the wifi off then back on again, only for it to work for a few seconds. Sometimes it just doesn't want to connect at all. I updated it recently, but the problem still occurs.
I've tried everything from SMC/PRAM resets, verifying/repairing my HD, deleting the system configuration files to no avail.
Is there anything I can do before I take it into the Apple store?

  • AppleTV frustrations

I am fairly close to becoming a strong negative voice about AppleTV. In theory, it is a great idea, but the implementation is starting to make it no more useful than a doorstop.
Right now, ordering HD TV shows or movies is so slow that I actually do not find it very useful. I now have a 52 minute HD TV show that's been downloading for about 24 hours. I'd rather get my $2.99 back than worry about it. I've tried everything, including hard resetting, unplugging my AirPort Extreme (newest version), and doing a dance around the unit.
Sometimes this product works well. But for the past six months give or take, the amount of time that it works is far surpassed by the amount of time that it doesn't. Just to see if it's my system, my TiVo downloads movies and TV shows from netflix in a little more than an instant. My Playstation 3 downloads movies and TV shows from the Sony store in approximately the same amount of time. Yes, neither can sync with my MBP, but right now, I could care less.
There is a network problem, and as best as I can tell, it's the Apple TV, not downstream servers. In fact, when I disconnect my AppleTV from the AirPort network, the speed of my whole network skyrockets. It's messing with my network. It doesn't provide me with any useful content, given it takes forever to download shows.
I am beyond frustrated. Can someone suggest something, because right now tin cans and string are a more useful technology than AppleTV.

I have had my Apple TV since they came out over 2 years ago.
Over the last month it has been a nightmare. I have the Airport Extreme router the same set up I have had on 5GHZ for ages. It drops off the network, it freezes, I have to constantly reboot. I have reset it back to factory settings and started again at least 3 times, still no better.
The frustrating thing is that I then even used ethernet and it still played up!(though not as bad as wireless)
All our media is streamed through the Apple TV and its difficult because every time my daughter wants to watch anything there's every chance that I will have to allocate 15 minutes to reboot the Apple TV, My iMac/and or router.
I am really dedicated to Apple but this thing needs a big update and a newer model with faster processer etc, its a fantatsic thing when it works properly, this is very disapointing:(

  • AppleTV 1st Gen and new computer

How do I connect AppleTV 1st Gen to different computer than the original laptop that I synced with? The laptop has very little space left and I want to synch with larger desktop. Do I have to disconnect it from laptop some how? The desktop has seen AppleTV, but it won't let me sync anything.

Thanks for the reply! I copied the iTunes Music folder to a removeable drive so I don't lose any of the info before disconnecting with AppleTV.
It is always wise to have a backup of your itunes library media on external drive etc - you never know when you might have a hardware failure on a computer/AppleTV etc.
Disconnecting AppleTV from the laptop itunes will not delete the content in iTunes on the laptop, but will wipe media synced to AppleTV from iTunes.
The big thing to ensure is that any purchases of music/video etc you made directly on AppleTV have synced back to the sync (laptop) library - right click on the AppleTV in iTunes on the laptop and choose Transfer Purchases to check if unsure.  In theory, things that haven't synced back should remain while stuff synced from the computer to AppleTV will go, but I don't fully trust it and best to ensure direct purchases are safe before disconnecting AppleTV.
The important point to get across is that AppleTV 1 does not operate like a backup of media - there is no simple or official way to recover media from it say your laptop iTunes hard drive failed.
    kellyfromnew york wrote:
need to put it on the desktop, can I just copy this into the iTunes Music folder on the desktop and it will now have all the appleTV stuff?
Don't do that (just copy into new itunes folder) as iTunes won't recognise the stuff you've copied in this way.
Either import to iTunes using iTunes' File>Add to Library and navigating to the iTunes media folder on the external or drag and drop this folder onto itunes to copy it over.
Another way to do this you might want to try is via Home Sharing - enable in iTunes on the laptop and desktop and this will allow the desktop iTunes to copy stuff over from the laptop - either all or selected content you choose form the Home Shared library icon - this will probably be slower than using the copy on the external drive, but is a good way to copy content from one machine to another across the network.
After adding your media to iTunes you need to go through the steps Winston and I outlined to change the sync computer entry on AppleTV under Settings>Computers.

  • PhotoStream: Multiple Devices and Performance Issues

Had a bad night last night with PhotoStream. I have an iPhone 4S (AT&T), my wife has an iPhone 4 (VZW), we have an iPad 1 (Wi-Fi), Apple TV 2 (Ethernet), and a 2011 Mac Mini (Wi-Fi)... all in the same house that has a Time Capsule and is connected to AT&T DSL service, 3.0Mbps service (average speed test results are 2.65Mbps down, 315kbps up). Oh yeah, there's a micro-cell in there too but anytime there's trouble that gets shut off first so its irrelevant for this discussion.
So yesterday was Halloween and we both took alot of photos away from the house with the iPhones. Got home, started using the internet, noticed the performance was HORRIBLE. Speed test showed over 1,000 ms ping latency (I still can't believe I actually waited for it to finish the ping test) and nothing was getting through for the download / upload test. I have never (believe it or not) with AT&T DSL seen it get this bad. Its been bad before, don't get me wrong, but this was surprising even to me.
How did I come to the conclusion that PhotoStream was my issue you may ask? Well, its sort of a long story, but bear with me... The other day, we started having trouble with the Apple TV 2, which for the most part is pretty solid. My wife was streaming Netflix movies and it was stopping every 30 seconds. It was looking at this issue that had me first raise suspicions about PhotoStream. Just days before this problem started, I had enabled PhotoStream on the Apple TV 2. SO I did the first most logical thing anyone could do, I took a step back and disabled it. Problem solved. Thought nothing of it, yeah I was a little discouraged that I couldn't use it on the Apple TV 2, but not a big deal, my favorite part of PhotoStream is using it to get the photos into iPhoto without having to plug the iPhones in so I said to myself "I'll just keep putting the photos into Events and Albums until they work out the kinks on the AppleTV 2" thinking perhaps the Apple TV 2 needs to not update PhotoStream while videos are being played. They can fix that at some point, right? Sure they can.
Now, back to this other issue. My bandwidth last night was completely crapped out, and I was determined to prestige on Black Ops one last time so this had to change STAT! I mean, come on! I was at Level 47 and I was ready to GO! My internet connection just wasn't having it. I powered off the router, rebooted the modem, and powered on the rotuer again. Everything came up beautifully. I jumped into some Nuketown 24/7, 4 green bars next to my name and I was happy. After we lost Bravo, which on Nuketown takes about a minute and a half if both teams are fighting over it, I'm lagging like crazy and I have that little red bar that no one likes to see next to my name. Sure enough, speedtest results are all whacked out again.
So I'm sitting there thinking to myself, what could this be? My wife was watching cable TV, my son was asleep... essentially the Xbox 360 was the only thing trying to use the internet... I thought... until I remembered our iPhones and the photos we had just taken and all the devices that would be simultaneously trying to update PhotoStream. Let's list them again, shall we?
iPhone 4S - Upload to Stream and Download from Stream
iPhone 4 - Upload to Stream and Download from Stream
iPad 1 - Download from Stream
Mac Mini - Download from Stream
So how can I prove this crazy theory of mine that the great and wonderful PhotoStream was choking my internet connection? Simple.
    iPhone 4S - PhotoStream OFF
    iPhone 4 - PhotoStream OFF
    iPad 1 - PhotoStream OFF
    Mac Mini - PhotoStream OFF
Speed test results immediately after doing this?
2.73Mbps down / .31Mbps up with 26ms ping time (used the Speedtest.NET app on the 4S).
Sadly, this means that for now, I cannot use PhotoStream, however I did manage to Prestige on Black Ops which made me happy, and the iPhone 4S can still be plugged into the Mac Mini to download my wonderful looking photos.
That's right, I didn't throw away the charger cables just yet and if you want to start talking about iTunes Wireless Synching with multiple devices in the same house, I can gladly take up some more of your time. Thats right, its OFF as well!

I just wanted to report that this is still an open and particularly nefarious bug.  I've got a fairly idealized Apple household with 2 iPhone 4's, a 'new' iPad, a 13" Macbook Pro, Airport Express and our most recent addition this weekend... an Apple TV.
While I had no particular interest in enabling Photo Stream, I turned it on while messing with the screen saver settings and didn't think anything about it.  As I began to play with my new toy I was immediately disappointed with all the long spinners and timeouts in Netflix.  Later that day I noticed my computer and iPad were having similar connection issues.  My first thought was 'oh, Comcast must be acting up, that's why my new Apple TV isn't working so well'.
Fast forward 3 days to today and our network issues were still occuring and I decided I needed to figure out what was going on.  After mucking around in network settings for a couple hours I half-jokingly decided to disconnect the AppleTV on the whim that the issues started at the same time I hooked it up.  Sure enough my network issues disappeared.  I even went so far as to run continuous pings to various IP's outside my home network and watch the timeouts come & go as i plugged/unplugged my ATV.  Now knowing the ATV was the problem I set out to figure out what in particular was causing it.  As soon as I signed out of Photo Stream everything was working perfect again.  Netflix on the ATV is quick & responsive, no more spinners or timeouts.  My other devices aren't plagued with random disconnects, dns failures or slow downloads.
Long story short, something is bugged in AppleTV's Photo Stream support.  Mine didn't appear to be downloading any new photos, it had stopped with 255 photos downloaded.  Not sure if that was all I had in iCloud or maybe AppleTV can only pull down 255 max?  Maybe 255 is the magic number where it hits the bug that causes this behavior?  Either way, it appeared to be only affecting the outgoing internet connection, when I had a continous ping going to another machine on my internal LAN it didn't appear to get affected.
Hope this helps someone at Apple track down the bug.  While someone technical can probably troubleshoot these issues I could see someone like my mom never putting the 2 + 2 together that her internet problems started around the time she enabled Photo Stream on her AppleTV and instead blaming it on 'the internet acting up again' and of course calling me months later to look into it for her.

  • The BT Vision Saga

    Hi guys,
Over the last several months I have been experiencing problems with both BT Broadband and BT Vision. Every day between 19:00hrs and 22:00hrs (approximation) my broadband connection would become sporadic, disconnecting and reconnecting, not to mention the incredible slowdown even when just browsing the internet. The BT Vission service would act in a similar way although this would normally go on from about 19:00hrs until sometime between 23:00 and 06:00hrs.
With BT Vission the main problem would be that access to On Demand content would be spotty and, like the broadband service, would cut off at random during the said time frame. Some days would be worse than others and some days there would be no problem at all. Another issue I have with BT Vission is the inferrior quality of the Freview reciever built into the BT Box. Quite often many of the freeview channels would stutter and stall. The picture would become pixilated and the sound jittery. Despite the fact that I live less than a mile from the neareat transmitter (I am actually looking at it from my livingroom window as I am typing this) and despite the fact that I have had no problem recieving any and all of the Freeview channels flawlessly with even the cheapest of boxes BT still insist that the problem is not with the hardware in the Vision Box.
I have the old grey Vision Box and eventhough I have been a loyal BT customer for the last five years I have never been offered a hardware upgrade. It is the same with the BT Homehub, but that is another story altogether.
After numerous calls to the India based call center and after spending countless hours on the phone with different representatives, each claiming that the cause of the problem is something different and each assuring me that whatever little scripted ritual they have performed has cured my system of whatever demons have been haunting it the problem still persists. Every time I have called the call center the person I have spoken too has promissed me that I would get a followup call in seven days to make sure the problem has indeed been fixed. As I said earlier the problem started several months back and that is when I placed the first of many calls and I am yet to get a followup call from anyone at BT.
Since none of the people charged with diagnosing the problem have seemed terribly helpful, or indeed able to fix the problem I have decided to cancel my BT Services and move to Sky. When I called to cancel my BT Vision account the person I spoke to in the retentions department offered to replace my box and hub, something that I had requested for months, and to send out an engineer to do an inhouse check. If this had been BT's initial response rather than turning me off by having me go through months of frustration getting nowhere with the scripted call center fixes I would have been more than happy to stay with BT. However, since this only became an option when I called to cancel it makes me think that the company doesn't really care about fixing the problems that its customers are experiencing unless it absolutely has to.
After the gentleman from the retentions department had gone through various things that he was prepared to offer me to stay with BT I told him that I still wanted my BT Vision cancelled and asked that the service be disconnected the day before the new billing period starts (this was still two weeks away), to which he reluctantly agreed. However, five minutes after getting off the phone to him I find that he has cancelled my BT Vision effective immediately. I even got an email confirming that I had agreed to this, which I had not.
I like the idea of BT Vision and it is a great product at a great price, but in my experience, when it seizes to function correctly you are left to suffer with no actual support from BT. Not to mention the vindictive nature of the company when I chose to cancel my account after five years of loyal subscription.
    Never again,
    Jinks

Just to clarify. I wonder why someone who has left BT would come suddenly to this forum and tell us why.
Secondly he seems to describe the cancellation process for Sky not BT who do not do deals on Vision or anything else for that matter except BB prices.
Thirdly his problems were easily solvable and if he had known of this forum surely he would have asked for help?
His Freeview reception was down entirely to aerial problems and nothing else. His BB problems would have been easily sorted by BT and would probably be down to congestion on the exchange which a lift and shift would have solved.
Lastly this is a peer to peer help group for folk needing help with BTVision the OP did not request help or add anything worthwhile to the forum.
Lastly he joined solely to make this post.

  • SMB share drops intermittently

I have a directory on my OS X (Lion) Mac Pro set up to be shared via SMB. I can mount this directory fine as a network drive from various Windows machines, but the share sporadically disconnects for a few seconds at a time, which makes it rather hard for programs that are trying to write to the disk at the time... I've noticed this from two separate Windows machines connected to the same Mac, so I'm pretty sure it's OS X, not the Windows side, that's having problems.
Does anyone know how to fix this (or how to get more information to help Apple fix this)?
    Thanks.
    Richard Stanton

thank you very much for your answer.
But my problem is not the listing of available shares of an serving system.
My exactly problem is to find out which PCs are offering SMB services. After I know which PCs are offering SMB services, I could find out with you command what exactly shares this PCs are offering.
    Any ideas?!?
    Thank You.

  • Devices not in itunes

2.5 hours of trying every single thing listed in the support area has not fixed my problem. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and trying to use pita software iTunes 10.5. I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled 3 times. (I checked, it is the 64 bit version).  I lost count of how many times I've restarted the computer and the iPod Touch itself.
No matter what I do, iTunes is not displaying the devices menu, let alone the device. It did not ask me to name the iPod or any set up related questions the first time I logged in. The iPod is showing in My Computer. Funny how my Windows laptop can identify my iPod but your proprietary software cannot.
Also, do NOT link me to the trouble shooting assistant. Been through every step twice, including the MSconfig stuff. New suggestions please.

Just to pile onto the thread with my own tale of woe ...
Basically, same problem as described above. On Saturday, my AppleTV vanished from iTunes despite no changes to the software, settings, network, etc. I (perhaps foolishly) upgraded to iTunes 9.2. No luck.
I tried all the usual tricks -- resetting, rebooting both the Mac and the AppleTV. I disconnected the AppleTV from the iTunes library. Nothing.
Then I did a Factory Restore (ugh). After upgrading to the current AppleTV software ... there it was! It showed up again back in the Devices list in iTunes! Hurray!!
    This lasted for ONE DAY.
Now, it's gone again. I did the Factory Restore / software upgrade again, but this time no luck. Sigh ...
All internet-related functionality on the AppleTV (trailer, YouTube, etc.) works great, which leads me to believe the problem is in iTunes, not on the AppleTV itself. Really, really frustrating. I freakin' LOVE my AppleTV when it works, but honestly, I have never owned a flakier, more problematic piece of Apple gear in 20 years of owning Apple gear.

  • BT Home Hub 5 replacement?

BT Engineers installed Infinity2 and wired speeds are good (70Mbps+). However wireless is pretty appalling with the HH5. I have just moved in so I have no experience of other routers wireless speed in this home. I have changed the 2.4GHz and 5GHz to unique names and tried connections to both and I have selected the least busy channels in my area, and every combination thereof to no avail. The biggest complaint is from my wife who cannot use Apple Facetime without continual buffering, and broken audio.
Most devices are wired directly to the router and through a homeplug network, that has acceptable speeds to stream HD video to the TV. (I know I could get a WiFi hotspot homeplug but I don’t want to lose anymore plugs) The tablets and laptops and smartphones in the home (there are 8) have very poor speed and also sporadic disconnects, one laptop even has inbuilt ac wireless with similar issues.
The HH5 is near to a radiator but no other sources of interference that I am aware of (cordless phones, baby monitors, (the room where you cook food) appliances, fluorescent lights etc.)
I am resigned to replacing the HH5 with another more powerful router that also supports ac, preferably one that also supports DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. Currently the master socket connects to the HH5 via a standard telephone cable (this is from memory as I am at work) i.e. there is no separate modem.
Do I need to buy an open reach modem to run a different wireless router?
    Will other brand modems work?
What technology should I be looking out for in a non BT modem?
What cables connect the modem to the master Socket and to the router?
Is there a significant overhead for connecting an extra appliance? (modem)
I am aware of an Asus router that has an inbuilt VDSL modem, negating the need for an extra modem but it doesn't support AC Wireless.
My current proposal to the wife goes something like this:
Master Socket ---- Open Reach Modem ---- ASUS AC68U >>>> iPad
    Is this going to work?
Unrelated question: When I have been looking into this I have seen several classes of AC wireless routers, AC2300, AC1900, AC1750, AC1600 etc. What does the HH5 claim to be?

The problem with the HH5, is that it only has internal wireless aerials, which are quite inefficient at transmitting the very tiny amount of power output (1/10th Watt), that all wireless routers are limited to by law.
If you buy a wireless access point with two or more external aerials, the ERP (Effective Radiated Power) will be much greater, and the range will be much greater.
Range is also determined by the sensitivity of the receive part of the wireless access point. On the HH5, this is swamped by internal electrical noise, due to the proximity of the internal aerials, to the internal circuitry. Having multiple aerials also means greater signal diversity, and better isolation between the transmit and receive sections of the wireless module.
You can turn off the wireless on the HH5, and just use the access point.

  • Netflix unable to connect

I have an Apple TV, and for the last week, we've been unable to get Netflix on it.  I've had the AppleTV for over 18 mos now.  While periodically, there will be some issues getting Netflix, or some episodes on Netflix, this has been constant for the last week. I'm able to get Netflix on my other devices.  We've tried hard restarts of AppleTV and the TV, we've tried disconnected the AppleTV and reconnecting.  AppleTV says the software is up to date. I've signed out of Netflix, and signed back in again.  Any other ideas?

    This may help.

  • Soundcloud airplay problem on iOS

    Hi,
I have a problem with soundcloud when using airplay with my appleTV.
When I set the audio source to appleTV, soundcloud continues playing for ca. 2 seconds, then it stops playing.
Pressing pause and play again doesn't solve the problem, it still hangs.
Only when I disconnect from AppleTV, soundcloud starts playing again. Connecting back to AppleTv, same thing as before, music stops after 2 seconds.
I don't have this problem with any other app, only soundcloud.
Also, streaming soundcloud music from my macbook to appleTV works just fine.
Any help is much appreciated as soundcloud has come to be my no.1 source for mixes and I hate having to switch on my macbook right away when I get home just to get some tunes.
    regards
    Andreas

If anybody else is suffering from this problem, I actually found a post about this on soundcloudcommunity, which might work.

  • Losing usb connection

Since I installed Yosemite I have experienced a sporadic disconnection of my USB devices attached to the system. I have to restart the system using PRAM method in order to get the devices back online. This occurs at least every 2nd or 3rd time that I'm using my Mac Book Pro "15 (spring "11) model. Again this began only after installing Yosemite. I have installed all of the subsequent updates with no change.  HELP!!!!!

Is it all devices?  Is it on all USB ports?  An appointement at an Apple store genius bar may be the best option.  the evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.
