Sporadic kernel panics

I've now had my 3rd kernel panic in the last 2 weeks. I don't know why they happen, or more importantly how I got past the first two?? Did lots of forum searching and reading, and tried various things but nothing I did obviously 'fixed' anything. The computer just started working correctly again before--but not now, at least yet!
I ordered a firewire cable and have used it to boot the Power Mac from a G4 Power Book. When I run disk utility repairs on the HD this is what I get:

Checking Extents Overflow file.

Does that tell those of you in the know what's going on, and what I might do to fix it?
Many thanks!

Do I have other options than $100 for DiskWarrior?
I had thought I might be able to get around this problem by loading 10.3 onto a second 40G HD on the Power Mac, and using that HD for start up. However each time I tried it, it hung up about 2/3 of the way through 'Optimizing System Performance'. Don't know if this is a HD problem or a CD problem (there are a few scratches on the CD and I've never had to use it before).
One thing that intrigues me is why the system started working again after the first 2 kernel panics? That doesn't make sense to me, but if I did something to cause it, sure wish I could do it again.
Thanks again.

  • Kernel Panic with AirDisk via Ethernet

Still conducting testing ... but I am getting sporadic Kernel Panics when my iMac is connected via ethernet. Seems to occur most with big files or multiple files. Seems ok with wireless, not sure if it could also be cable .. but anybody who is using AEBs should look out for this.

I think your issue is in the low percentage category.

  • Disappearing shared device causes kernel panic

My wife and I trade a lot of files between our MacBooks over our wifi net (airport). If she puts hers to sleep while I am connected to her hard drive (i.e. it appears as an external drive under shared devices), mine goes into the beachball of death mode, from which it never recovers unless I do a forced reboot. Any way to avoid this?

    Hello,
I cannot help directly but I have a similar problem which may be related to yours. This makes me think that OSXs USB driver or at least the networking via USB functionality is broken. I have sporadic kernel panics whenever I connect a windows mobile device (that theoretically supports this kind of virtual ethernet connections). Even if the device is just connected to be charged and there is no syncing going on etc. it happens. I have found some other discussions here that seem to be related too. (E.g. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2485144&tstart=0)
The backtrace always roots to com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily
I had this since Leopard. It is the same with Snow Leopard. I know it is not too helpful, but at least you see that you are not alone here.

  • Kernel panics in 10.7.4 and 10.8

    I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro.
It is completely stable running 10.7.3. When I upgraded to 10.7.4, it would Kernel Panic a couple times a day. I tried a straight upgrade to an actual full install as 10.7.4 (extracting DMG from Installer and making bootable USB). Still same issue. I ended up going back to a 10.7.3 install and waited for 10.8 to come out.
I did a clean reformat and installed 10.8 and am getting sporadic kernel panics, about two a day at random moments. Last night, I left my laptop on and nothing was running except iTunes and when I woke up this morning, the computer had restarted because of a KP
I can't imagine that Apple has some sort of introduced bug in 10.7.4 that is an issue, but it seems like it. I'm almost pondering dropping back down to 10.7.3 on this machine.

I revisted this issue after doing a lot of experimenting and Google research.
I isolated it to the OCZ Agility 3 SSD I was using in my mid-2009 13" MBP and replacing that drive resolved my Kernel Panics. I have been running Mountain Lion for 72 hours without a Kernel Panic.
I documented it all here: http://www.ocabj.net/kernel-panics-in-mac-os-x-10-7-4-and-10-8-solved/

  • MBP 13" - sporadic gray screen of death/kernel panic?

    Hi all,
I've had my MacBook Pro 13" for about a month, and for three of those four weeks, it's been crashing sporadically every few days. It's typically the same. The gray kernel panic screen will wipe down for no apparent reason, and I have to hard restart. I ran the Apple Hardware Test (both quick and extended) and it found no problems. I'm at a loss, especially as I bought the computer in a different country to where I'm now living. If I post one of the error logs, would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?
    Cheers
    Sam

    Thanks for the help guys.
It didn't happen from day one. As far as I can remember, things started going awry when I closed the lid and put it to sleep with about 40 min to an hour of battery life left. When I tried to wake it a few hours later, the battery was completely dead. I haven't had that problem with the battery again, but the kernel panics started around the same time and have been sporadically occurring ever since.
I uninstalled nearly every piece of third party software at the time, and have been ditching other essentials as they've kept occurring. Right now the only third party app I still have installed is Firefox, and I'm only using that because the one constant I can see across the crashes is that Safari is running every time.
I ran the disk utility a couple of times, getting the OK each time on Verify Disk, and some permissions fixed both times I ran Repair Disk Permissions. I've had a couple of kernel panics since I did this.
Here's the latest log from the console. In the mean time, I'll try erasing and reinstalling like you suggest.
    Many thanks ahead of time.

  • Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac

Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning  of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro.
I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5  days
However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
Most commonly the computer would freeze,  briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different,  work loads, ect.
I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
    Things I have done:
    -Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    -Reset SMC
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Ran apple diagnostics
-Stress tested processor using "yes" command

  • Sporadic Boot Kernel Panic

    Hi all,
Looking for some advice, as I've tried searching for this specific problem but can only find 'similar' and nothing exactly like what I'm experiencing.
About a week ago, I booted up my Mac, and it gave me the startup sound and the Apple logo came on, then I got the 'You need to restart your computer...' message (which through a later search I learned was a "kernel panic" message). So I did as instructed and the second time it booted fine.
Next day, I had the same issue, only this time it took me about five or six goes before it got to the loading page, but eventually it came on.
Since then, it's been doing this every time on boot, and only ever on boot. Once it loads up, everything is fine, it doesn't crash or anything.
From reading other kernal panic messages, it seems to be suggesting that it is a problem with the RAM? I haven't touched anything to do with the system itself (I know better than to mess around with hardware =p) so before I take this to a repair shop, I was wondering if there is anything else that could be causing this?
    Many thanks.

Although it certainly could be a problem with RAM, it could also be a software problem. Unfortunately, startup panics such as yours frequently are caused by corrupted system files required during startup. However, it's possible that it's a corrupted cache file causing the problem. There are some things you can do that may fix it.
First is to do the following:
Delete caches to resolve some startup problems:
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following commands pressing return at the end of each:
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed.
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices*
Quit the Terminal application and immediately restart your computer.
Second, download a utility such as TinkerTool System - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it to clean all browser, user, system, and font caches; clear temp and log files. Do an immediate Restart.

  • Kernel panics on new MBP 2.66 I7 - mostly bluetooth

    Hi -
I've been through the forums and can't seem to find this problem anywhere else; if I've missed it and it's solved - please redirect me. tx!
I received a 15" 2.66 i7 from Apple at the end of November 2010 as an applecare replacement for my mid-2008 2.6 MBP.
Since then I've been getting kernel panics related to bluetooth(first one 3 days after I got it) which are fairly random but increasing in frequency (4 in the last 3 weeks), and had abysmal wifi performance. It holds a connection while busy streaming or downloading just fine, but if I'm using sporadically (ie surfing) it drops, and the range is very poor(about half what my old MBP had). As I recently discovered this generation of MBP now combines the bluetooth and airport cards (4 senior techs I spoke with over the last 2 months at apple didn't know that).
I have Applecare and I've been making a nuisance of myself to apple, but we're getting nowhere. It passes all hardware tests, and since I can't make it panic on command they haven't been willing to see a problem. But the continuing panics indicate otherwise.
This is what has been done so far:
    SMC reset
    PRam Zap
    Safe start
Apple hardware tests - short and long - too many to count - all passed
Verify/Repair permissions - just the get usual java nonsense.
    Disk Verify - no problems
(3x) System wipe (w/zero pass to be sure) & reinstall system & all software cleanly from original disk. 3rd party software is Adobe CS, Microsoft office and Skype ONLY (has panic'd with only Adobe).
Capture data & all panic errors (I keep them) sent to apple engineering - also 3 times. The only suggestion they've come back with is possibly 3rd party hardware. I don't have any. My bluetooth are an apple wireless mighty mouse & wireless keyboard.
I've taken it to an ASP for diagnosis, and after days of testing they couldn't find a hardware problem. I finally had a bit of a tantrum with apple (not something I'm proud of, but after 2 months something had to be done) and they agreed to replace the bluetooth card. It wasn't until the asp ordered the part that anyone realized it was now combined w/airport.
The bluetooth/airport card replacement was done 7 days ago. To ensure there would be no left over effects from previous panics, I wiped my drive and reloaded my system & all software to give everything a clean start, hoping it would now all be rainbows and sunshine. (note - I copy all data files off manually to an external drive rather than backup/restore so I know exactly what is on my machine & where it is).
Two days ago, after powering the machine on and getting as far as loading safari, it seemed to stall for a few seconds, flashed a blue screen and went instantly dead. It powered back on just fine (no incorrect shutdown message) and seemed to work normally. I called applecare and pretty much got "it happens." After extended use and a load of 3rd party software it does, but right after a clean install....
A few hours later, another bluetooth kernel panic. The system is 'flakey'.... I have random things that I can't reproduce (yesterday it 'restarted' part way through startup....?)...
I'll post the most recent panic log. They all seem to be about the same( panic(cpu # varies ) and occur when I'm using safari although not necessarily loading anything (one happened when I wasn't even in the room).
*I did also have a graphics-related kernel panic after a clean install, but only one. Unless it happens again I won't worry about it.
*When this problem started in December it was with 10.6.5, and has continued with 10.6.6
Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated....
    sorry to be so wordy-
    cheers!
    J
Adobe CS & Microsoft Office only software loaded, apple wireless mighty mouse & wireless keyboard only extra hardware (though not in use at the time).

Thanks for you time and help!
I am confident it's not OSx corruption at any rate; it's just been reinstalled too many times for it to have garbled the same way each time. If it's just coded badly or incompatible there's nothing I can do about it. The only 3rd party software on this machine is Adobe and MSOffice, and they certainly shouldn't cause problems.
I took my mouse & keyboard with me to the ASP when it went for testing as that is a logical place to look, but they declined the need and didn't try them. When it panics I'm usually on the edge of the range of the mouse/keyboard and I will often see sporadic connect/disconnect messages. However, this happens quite a bit in relation to how often I get panics so could easily be unrelated. I mentioned this to the ASP but they didn't consider it relevant.
RAM's a likely culprit on new machines and test are notorious for not finding it (I ran Rember a while back -passed), but again the ASP pointed to bluetooth and said it was unlikely.
I think at this point I have to just dig in with apple and insist they diagnose and fix (with a timeline), or replace. Even if they don't replace it, if it motivates them and it gets fixed we'll have a solution.
    Thanks again for your help-

  • Kernel panics and storms of them by startup

I am experiencing wierd problems with my iMac G5 that slowly drive me mad. My problems started around time I installed patch 10.4.6 but I am not sure if it is directly connected to it as I did not find any report of similar problems. Last adds campaign about PC getting restarts while Mac no made me laugh sarcasticly...
There are basicaly two scenarios. My iMac gets kernel panic immediately after wake-up (very often; 4 times from 6 wake-ups) or receives kernel panic while running in various applications (very sporadic) in the first phase. I am forced to power it down and start again. However this leads to second phase, where I am experiencing a lot of kernel panics during bootstrap process to--from 1 to 10, mostly around 4. Many of kernal panics in boostrap process occur already in gray screen with apple in the middle.
The first ideas I stepped over as checking/repairing file system and its rights, reseting NVRAM/PRAM, disconnecting all periferies are not helping at all. Having such random occurence of these kernel panics I personaly strongly suspect my RAM modules at the moment.
However I am missing some memory testings software for Mac/PowerPC. Found just "memtest", but I have no trust in it. It runs moreless in userspace, allocates rest of free memory and tests only this area. I am looking for something like "memtest86" that makes complete tests starting with L1 cache till last byte of memory chip. I read something about "Apple Hardware Test" but I cannot locate it somehow. At least I did not found it on installation DVD with Mac OS X Tiger... Any recommendations?

Kernel panics during startup are most frequently due to a hardware problem such as bad RAM or a corrupted hard drive. The Apple Hardware Test should be included with one of the distribution DVDs that came with the computer. Your User Guide should provide information on its use. For more on diagnosing kernel panics visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on kernel panics.
If you have more than one RAM module in the machine you might remove one and see if the kernel panics cease. If they continue, then swap modules.
Run Disk Utility and select your hard drive entry (the one with the mfgr.'s ID and drive size), then check the DU status bar for the SMART status report. If the SMART status does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing.
I assume from your statement that you checked/repaired the filesystem meant you repaired the hard drive and permissions. If not, then boot from the Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions.
Booting in safe mode will help determine if the problem could be due to third-party extensions or startupitems. Creating a new user account and logging out of the normal account and logging into the new account will test whether the problem is caused by an incompatible login item.

    Hi everyone!
I have this exact problem too!
Installed upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion as soon as it came out. Everything was ok until I installed my Kingston SSDNow 128gb SSD and 2 Kingston 4GB DDR3 RAM sticks (8gigs total), I cloned my HDD onto my brand new SSD, everything worked great.... until I got my first kernel panic...
After lots of times of having to force-reboot my mac because of those kernel panics, I finally decided to do a clean install of lion. I did, and everything worked fine until, guess what?, kernel panic.
I'm starting to think that it may be my SSD or my RAM sticks that are defective but I can't actually believe that cause they are both brand new (bought them toghether 2 months ago).
So... today my mac got completely fu@#*ed up... it wouldn't even recognize my external HDD. I had to backup to a network shared drive and did a clean install (again...).
That was 6 hs ago, and now I'm posting this after a kernel panic.
I dont know what to do... did any one found a solution for this?
I'd apreciate your help very much.
    Best regards,
    Santiago

Hi.  I've been having occasional kernal panics and also using the soundflower kext.  It was the only kext running that wasn't Apple's, so I found this thread investigating the issue.  I have removed it, but it is too soon to know if it worked.  I will report back if I still get KPs.
You should keep in mind that non-apple kexts will be the most likely not to support Lion yet.

  • Kernel panics, airport on

Seeing strange kernel panics with an emac and PB G4 1.33. PM G5 Late '05 also having KP's and mouse lockup sporadic movements with Airport on. Turn off Airport, works fine. Did clean install x.4.6 and x.4.x1 combo update on the PB and the same occurs. PM G5 failed at the shop here and at his home. KP's at the shop and gives him sporadic mouse movement/lockups at his house. He has 3rd party wireless router and we have the lated AE Extreme at the shop. Anyone seeing similar? No issues with airport off and using ethernet for internet access. Thanks in advance.

I can confirm a definite conflict w/ Tiger 10.4.11 and the Dual-Band Airport Extremes....
I work in an Authorized Apple Repair Center in GA; I recently brought my Powerbook G4 15" 1.67ghz machine for the young'uns who have never seen anything older than a unibody(!) to gawk at...
I connected it to the network (new Dual Band Extreme Router) )at the shop -- worked fine for a few minutes then got a KP, with the Black Box of No Return(!)....
Started it up again, almost as soon as it arrived at the desktop, KP again.  Logs stated a bunch googly-gook about some error on the USB bus...
Took it home, embarrassed and disgusted (ha!); no KPs.
Took it back to the shop?  KPs again!
I turned on my pocket Mifi router, which my laptop is set to connect to before anything else it sees... and no more KPs.  Connected manually to the shop router again... KP.
Well, I won't be getting a Airport Extreme anytime soon(!) -- I have alot of machine I use (and in my "museum" that are pre-Leopard.  Hello Netgear!

  • Kernel panics when in sleep mode

I bought a macbook pro about a month ago. It first came with Mountain Lion installed on it. I began having kernel panics when I put the laptop into sleep mode by closing the lid. After some time I would open the lid to find that the laptop had rebooted with a kernel panic. This continued to sporadically happen. I called apple and went to the apple store. The mbp passed their hardware tests so they did a clean Yosemite installation. I am still having the kernel panics. They all look nearly identical. I'm not sure what could be causing this. Any ideas are appreciated.

Apparently the forum software here is preventing my from posting my entire log.

After doing a clean install of Yosemite this same kernel panic continued to happen and I started getting gpuRestarts as well. Finally they replaced my logic board at the apple store and so far no more panics. My google results lead me to believe this was a failing GPU.

  • Mid 2010 13-inch MBP kernel panics

I started having kernel panics maybe about a year ago.  It used to be very sporadically but now it's happening more often (the last three within a week of each other I think).  The computer is also fairly slow nowadays.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test and everything was okay and also downloaded and ran MemTest and it was fine.  The Kernel Panic errors seem to always have this mutex/spinlock error as seen below.  I'm not doing anything particular or intensive when they happen.  One time it happened when it was idle.  The Genuis said I multitask too much but I don't think so and I normally don't run too many things that should stress the memory.  Usually have Thunderbird, Firefox, Chrome, iTunes, Preview, Adobe Reader open and some non-intensive program.

Kernel panics are usually caused by hardware issues.  Make sure all of your hardware peripherals (drivers) are up to date if applicable.
Try the suggestions in articles - Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
    Kernel Panics? Don't panic too!
"You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)

  • Predictable pattern of kernel panics - can you interpret a panic report?

Hi. Long time listener, first time caller.
I installed 10.5 on my PB as soon as it became available and have had an issue with kernel panics ever since. The panics arrive in waves of ~12-15 at a time over the two to three days (~36-48 hours of uptime) immediately subsequent to my having booted from a volume other than the 10.5.2 system on my PB's internal HD. When the panics have run their course, everything returns to normal, and no problems of any kind arise until after I've temporarily booted into another volume.
I have experienced these waves of kps after booting from a 10.5.2 volume on an external drive; two different 10.4.11 volumes on two different external drives; the 10.5 retail install disc; a brand new DiskWarrior 4.1 CD, and the AHT volume on the (replacement) Install and Restore disc that came with my computer. (None of the utilities I've used to attempt diagnose my issue have returned any errors or warnings about the state of my hardware \[incl. RAM and AEBS] or my main boot volume.)
I've attached the latest panic report below. It is identical to all of my PanicReporter entries for the past 6 months. I can see that this may be AirPort (driver) related, but if you can offer a more incisive reading of the report than that, I'm definitely interested in what you have to say.

    Thank you.

Because this post contains information that may be useful to others later on, I will not ask that it be removed as I have some of your previous posts in this topic.
    Notes:
Panics do indeed occur in various situations, but as you suggest, I cannot at every moment account for the status of background processes. As I've said, however, the data in the panic reports I have amassed over the past six months are (virtually) identical. And as I pointed out more than once, these spates of panics occur in predictable, repeatable cycles.
AHT in Extended, loop mode over 24 hours has not detected a RAM issue, though I am aware that this does not necessarily rule a RAM issue out.
As mentioned above, neither DU's Disk Repair nor DiskWarrior have solved this issue.
No data was transferred to this present installation via TDM or Migration Assistant. It was an E&I onto a freshly formatted volume. There is very little third-party software installed (BBEdit; CSSEdit; an FTP client and various browsers). Other major third-party software exists on 10.4.11 volumes because I am too cheap to upgrade many of these products when older versions still work well in the previous OS.
There is no third-party hardware attached to this machine beyond a variety of HDs (all OWC; Hitachi), and there is no firmware to update for any other peripherals being used, however sporadically.
This problem has presented itself through a variety of installation options, including a simple upgrade from 10.4.10; an A&I over a 10.4.10 volume; E&Is both using and not using Migration Assistant (with A&Is following both), and cloning an E&I on an external volume back to a newly formatted volume on my PB.
Could be the RAM, but the symptoms (and the log files) tell me that more likely it's an I/O issue having something to do with AirPort, which brings you and I full circle, I guess.
    Thanks again!
