Sporadic Preview Regeneration
I have had many instances where altering a photo, either cropping, straightening or altering exposure, definition, etc. will give me a totally white or partially white preview.
Unchecking my adjustments (i.e. enhancements) restores the preview, then I can recheck my adjustments and the preview remains. Deleting and forcing a regeneration of the preview has no effect.
This has been a problem in last two updates. Has this been identified as a bug and will it be fixed. It's a real pain.
Thanks,
Rob

I'm using CS4/10.5.6 but this would happen in CS3 too.
As I test I went through my image and turned off the first layer I came to in Overlay mode.
Saved and had the same preview result.
I then turned that back on but deleted every alpha channel. Bingo, the preview now shows the file in its entirety.
So as a further test I went back and just deleted the first alpha channel (1 of 7). Now the preview shows only in the areas of what is the new first alpha channel (previously #2).
I guess this is good to know that if for some reason a Finder preview of a PSD file is necessary deletion of all alpha channels needs to happen. Another tidbit of extraneous info to store away!

Bridge CC / Continous preview regeneration?
Hi!
I recognized several times, that Bridge is regenerate the preview images very often.
If I mark several images, the previews are regenerated. That is not so funny, as Bridge uses only one of my eight virtual CPUs (Intel Core i7 2600@3,4 GHz with four cores plus Hyperthreading) and it takes a while to build the previews of 300 or 400 images.
My RAW-Cache is limited to 100 GB. The Bridge Cache is limited to 500.000 images. That should be more than enough for my round about 1.200 pictures.
My Bridge provided by Photoshop CS 4 had no such issues.
Is there anything known, or has Adobe imrpoved their software really so much, that it fails more and more? Sorry, but I had really big performance issues with Lightroom 5. And now it looks like, also Bridge has decreased the performance.
Any idea, what I can do?
Thanks! This is not normal behavior, previews should only regenerate when altering settings in ACR or save after having changed them in PS.
There is a long thread about regenerating previews due to using the crop tool in ACR but that should be solved in ACR 8.2 or at least much improved and only affects files that have been cropped in ACR itself.
I don't know the architecture of the software but it seems to use as much as possible automatically and can be very processor demanding. But having 8 cores and 32 GB RAM in my Mac I seldom see more then about 40 % (often less) usage for Bridge.
For me using SSD and enough Resources Bridge seems still not fast enough but then again, I (like many others) only seem to be satisfied with real time behavior and that is still not realistic… , but seriously, I do think Bridge CC is very fast on my set up and using label or rating should not affect previews at all.
Then again, I also use DNG files that write data in the file itself, if you have Raw with XMP side car then it should even be a lot faster (if possible because rating is almost real time already)
Even if you have set to save ACR data to a central database instead of using this data in the side car xmp files then 100 GB is still way to much. I have the default setting with 1 GB and this contains data for about 1700 files, overwriting the oldest with newest. But as said, I don't need it at all because this data is already in the DNG file itself. When using xmp side car thes files contain the data also so there is no need to assign such large space for the Raw cache to my opinion.
Having the slider for cache halfway is also more then suitable for most common use. Even with 250K files Bridge will be unusable due to large cache and slow behavior. It just is not a DAM like a dedicated DAM while a dedicated DAM is not capable for the pre process tasks Bridge is very strong at
I would start checking ACR version (if you use crop tool very important to check) and restart Bridge holding down control key to both purge central cache and preferences.
Also check a problem folder on hidden cache files. If there are such cache and Cache.T files from previous versions they can cause problems and new ones can also get you in trouble, just not a good feature to use at all in my opinion. -
Many Sporadic Preview Related Issues
Not sure if this is where to post/report Lightroom 5 issues or not, but here are preview-related issues I am experiencing...
Preview panel "preview" freezes indefinitely.
App very slow to load while creating new previews. (previews take forever to create and update)
Wrong previews showing for wrong images when swapping between folders, etc. (ie: all photos, last import, custom collections)
This one is a little different...
Ratings lost when switching between folders, etc. (ie: all photos, last import, custom collections)
This was a clean install that ran beautifully at first. Started noticing this more and more after using the spot tool. (my last step in processing a job)
I use separate catalogs per job. Some as small as a few dozen images. (family stuff) Others, as large as 500-600. (engagement and wedding clients)
Hope you are working on this. It's making work a struggle. I'm not just a "consumer". ;-)This is a user to user forum so the responces you recieve here will mostly be from users like your self. I am sure someone will respond on how to help dealing with the problem you are experiencing.

Why do some multi-layer, multi channel PSD files preview in the Finder with only part of an image? It appears the file preview is being extracted through the contents of the first alpha channel in the file. http://tinyurl.com/d4gmuf

Hi,
Lately I am seeing a recovered files folder in the trash with a bunch of Preview folders titled "com.apple.Preview8909_2118585411 " and the like and also some titled "mf_refimg.29" and the like. All have pictures in them. The Preview folder has a bunch, if not all of the pics I've looked at with Preview lately (maybe yesterday's batch from the camera) and the mf_refimg folders have a graphic I used with Disc Cover, a CD/DVD cover app. Disc Cover is working fine as is Preview. No strange behavior noted in either app other than the OS thinking that Preview still has a pic open after I have closed that pic, which has been a sporadic Preview bug for awhile. All the pics appear to be copies of pics that are happily in the folders they started out in, elsewhere on my computer.
Why is it doing this? I have recently checked the drive using Disk Utility from my install CDs and nothing has been found to be wrong. I had a kernal panic a few days ago but Disk Utility has checked things since and found nothing wrong. (The kernal panic was due to my trying to startup from an external Firewire drive that had 10.4.8 on it. That disk has since been erased and reformatted with no system on it, just the driver so it will appear on my desktop when connected. I haven't used that drive since checking my Powerbook disk with Disk Utility.)
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,
John L
Message was edited by: John LippincottJust to add a bit to what Malcolm said--many programs keep temporary files. In Preview's case you'll notice that there is a "Revert" item in the File menu, so if you make changes and then change your mind it can recover the the original. The temp files for Preview are stored in this hidden directory:
"/private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems"
Programs are supposed to clean up after themselves when they quit, invisibly getting rid of their temp files, but some programs fail to do this. Preview USED to but no longer does (one of a number of things that got goofed up in Preview when they re-wrote it). When that happens the system itself will do the clean-up next time you restart, and place the temp files into the Recovered Items folder which it deposits in the Trash. Another Apple program that fails to delete its temp files when it quits is SoundTrack Pro (and its garbage can be very large files). Since programs are supposed to automatically get rid of this stuff, when they don't the system assumes the program crashed and that you might want the things back, so puts them in a folder in the Trash so you can sort through and decide if you need or can use them.

Master Previews disappear in Browser
Hi All
Recently when I import files (RAW) and then edit to create a new version, the new version Preview displays..but the Master preview is just a blank box. I can still view the master in Full Screen, and still edit it to create new versions...but no display of the preview in the browser.
If I view Browser AND Viewer, then the Master preview is visible again. I have only noticed this since the upgrade to 2.1.1 Have I toggled something...or is this an "undocumented feature" (cough).
TIA
Message was edited by: indecisve64If I understand the issue, I had a similar problem--sporadic previews in the browser (some thumbnails would show up, but others would not). Anyhow, if this is the problem, I read from another thread that you need to close out of Aperture and then reopen while holding the Option and Command keys... This brings up the dialogue box to "rebuild your library database". I chose the option for "consistency check" and it rebuilt my thumbnails perfectly (I didn't click on the "rebuild now" option, so I can't vouch for that).
Good luck. -
How to keep A3 library stored in different locations in sync.
Hello,
I use referenced files, however, even having relatively small previews stored within A3, one of my libraries is over 34GB.
Main library is stored on MP. However, to do images selection, sorting, key-wording, etc. whenever I have free time and no access to MP, I copy the A3 libraries to my MBP. To copy latest versions from one computer to another takes time as I copy entire libraries.
The question: is there are any way to copy only parts of a library that are modified or newly added?
Hopefully there are more A3 users that need the same functionality and there is an easy way implemented to A3 already.I did some research about information merging to A3 libraries.
Firstly, I copied A3 library from one computer to another and did some changes in one of libraries. Then I tried to import entire library from one computer to another selecting "merge" option. It failed right from the beginning bringing the "The library could not be imported because it is a duplicate of the library currently running" message.
Then on MBP I created an empty library and imported entire library from MP, did some meta data changes in one of libraries and tried to import entire library to unchanged one. My fault was that I played with my original relatively big library therefore it took some time. After an import process I realized that no changes were applied. I tried it another time selecting another library to resolve conflicts - same result.
I did more experiments, however the only way to get changes merged into a library was to export modified project and merge it to another library. Then, because the project is duplicated I had to remove an original one and relocate to correct place the one I just imported.
During these experiments I found that:
- if during an "Export a project as New Library…" to leave "Include previews in exported library" unchecked, visiting newly imported library for the first time it takes a few moments to regenerate thumbnails (smaller versions of preview) and some thumbnails are distorted. And it is a bug of generating thumbnails from the previews. If a thumbnail is generated but distorted, to fix it one can open a preview, wait until "Loading…" at the top of a image disappears and close the preview or by right mouse click, holding Opt/Alt and choosing "Generate previews" from menu. However, this works fine if the thumbnails of the images are already generated and if not, this "Generate previews" is useless. Which means it is necessary to go to "Photos" and wait until all the thumbnails are generated and then use this "Generate previews" option to heal broken thumbs.
I discovered this after I activated "Photos", but did not scrolled down to force A3 to generate thumbnails, hit Ctrl + A (select all) and "Generate previews". Previews regeneration took about 10 hours on my 24GB RAM 3.33GHz Mac Pro. When it is done, scrolling through images I found that thumbs are not created and some of ones that are appearing/generating during my scroll are distorted. The results of this quite long test were disappointing.
I have one more question: I found an option to export metatags from an A3 project, however, I did not find the way to import/apply the exported metadata to the pictures it belong to but located in another library. -
Lighroom 5.4 Develop View does not update when changing sliders
Just updated to Lightroom 5.4 (using Adobe CC) on Win8. After going to "develop view" on any photo and changing the exposure or any other slider does not update the main view of the photo. It does however update the thumbnail in the film strip and the second monitor window correctly. I've tried everything I can think of:
(1) downgrading to LR 5.3 (which used to work)
(2) forcing 1:1 and standard preview regeneration
(3) uninstalling the re-installing Lightroom (both 5.3 and 5.4)
(4) Optimizing catalogue
(5) Removing the Adobe AppData folder
(6) Creating a brand new catalogue with zero photos, importing a single photo and trying to change exposure/contrast on that
None of these result in the develop view of the picture changing when I change the sliders.
Do you guys have any experience with this? The chances of me suspecting monitor color profile causing bugs in LR was very slim. =)
So were mine, especially when only the view itself doesn't work, but all other stuff works fine. Well, I probably have really not good colour profile, luckly you can change it after the lr is launched - it won't cause the problem untill next restart (at least works for me). And hopefully once my calibrator arrives lr will work ok with its colour profiles.. -
Can import TIFF files but not see or work with images
I previously used Aperture 2 with no problems. I have scanned a large number (hundreds) of negatives using SilverFast current version 6.6.2r2 using a Plustek OpticFilm 7500i scanner. These files are saved as .tif and are all approx 55 MB in size. I was able to view, work with them with no problems in Aperture 2. I can see and work with them in Photoshop CS4, iPhoto, Preview on my iMac and in any program on my PC. However, I cannot view them or work with them in Aperture 3
When I updated to Aperture 3, the scanned files were visible in the preview mode but not otherwise viewable. Another image from a different project would appear or the image was corrupted. I have done everything in Aperture Library First Aid. I have deleted all of my projects, including my vault, uninstalled and reinstalled Aperture 3 and have the same problem. The image is viewable in Browser (preview mode) but either no image or another image shows up in Viewer or Inspector mode. When looking at the Metadata info, the file name is correct but a different version name is being assigned from a different project.
Any ideas are appreciated. I am about to give up on A3 as it has been nothing but problems and unusable since installed/reinstalled.
By the way, JPEGs from camera, cards, etc have been ok. But one of the major goals I have is to capture my old negatives. Unfortunately, the SilverFast JPEG option is not a viable option as not a viewable file by most programs. I have used the VueScan software but have not been happy with the image quality. Besides, I don't want to have to rescan all of these images.I wanted to give an update to my issue. The originals are 16-bit TIFFs using RGB color.
I spoke with Apple Support. After uninstalling, reinstalling, making a new library, importing, generating previews, regenerating previews, attempting importing after saving as JPEGs, 8-bit TIFFs, 16-bit TIFFs from other programs (all of which are able to import and present the orginal .tif files with no problems, Aperture 2 included), the conclusion was that there must be something wrong with my original .tif files.
I then brought up the only "solution" that had worked to date. That is importing the original TIFF, exporting it (via Aperture 3) as a TIFF and then importing the new TIFF. This has given me usable images and not just the previews. He said that that looked like the only workaround but that it wasn't a problem because of Aperture itself!?
As cumbersome as this process will be, it may be worth it. I have trialed Lightroom 3 (which can handle the originals with no problem), and at least so far, I much prefer Aperture's workflow and organizational approach. -
I imported my old iPhoto library into my new Aperture 3 library....when i try to sync my iPhone 4 with Aperture, I choose to sync the last 20 projects. It seemingly picks 20 random events, both from events/projects created in Aperture and events created in iPhoto years ago, with no rhyme or reason. It DOES NOT check off the most recent events i've created, and the events that are checked are grayed out so i can not manually uncheck them.
All my photos are imported in Aperture and not linked to the iPhoto library. In Aperture I've tried deleting and then generating previews, regenerating thumbnails, repairing permissions, and repairing the database all to no avail. Is this just a horrible bug or is there a solution?
Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. This was also happening with my iPod touch 2nd generation iOS 3 so it seems to be an aperture or itunes issue.See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after. As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

Help! Thumbnail + files lose Sharpening done in Camera Raw
I sharpen an image in Camera Raw... Looks great. I save it as a JPG to my ext HD. I open and thumbnail previews and file lose the sharpening I applied. Looks terrible. Reinstalled whole Design Premium. Didn't work.
Thanks for any answers!Am I to understand you expect your thumbnail previews to be sharpened the same as your images? These things are generally at two completely different scales. Sharpening that affects a radius of 1 or 2 pixels in a 3000+ pixel image won't have much visible effect at 800 pixels.
A preview is just that - a preview. You should not expect to gauge the sharpening of the actual image by the sharpness of the preview generated. Image sharpening settings have to do with the development of the image, not the generation of the preview.
I think perhaps you're actually trying to solve a problem where you'd like to see more detailed previews on your monitor, e.g., in Filmstrip mode in Bridge, or for a slideshow. Have you tried investigating the different preview options in Bridge?
Also, something else to look at: In Bridge, choose Edit - Preferences - Advanced... Try checking the following setting, remembering to purge the cache afterward in order to cause the preview regeneration.
-Noel -
I regenerated the previews in two projects in Aperture so the retouched photos are updated on my iPad. Now, none of the 832 images in one project show up in iTunes and only 23 of 762 show up in another project. The images look fine in Aperture (although I don't know if I can display previews). The projects I didn't regenerate are OK in Aperture & in iTunes.
John,
I have seen the same results and posted a query last week.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17277428#17277428
Several other people have mentioned the same thing, although for most people it works fine. I have to believe it's a bug at this point, although I do not know why it happens to some people and not others. That would imply there is a pattern we can find that reveals the bug, and a different pattern in which everything works fine.
So, questions back to you:
Do you have "Generate preview immediately" set?
Have you ignored Aperture and iTunes for a while and then come back to see what happens?
Do you have any projects which are synced correctly?
For your two projects that are not synced correctly, what is your project and album structure to get to those? I.e., "Folder/Folder/Project/Album", or something like that... I'm wondering if the problem is with some sort of nesting of containers... When I get home I can post the structure of my problematic photos.

Regenerating previews at startup
There seems to be a hardcore persistent group of about 18 files on startup which Aperture keep regenerating previews for, it slows my system right down and I can't use Apeture until the operation is completed. I've tried all three option from Rebuilding the database to repairing it but the issue perists,I have a mostly managed Library and have read it can be down to consolodation, but those files had been consolodated long ago.
What is going on?One thing that I noticed all the offending files had in common was that they were either videos or audio files (fly, mov, mp3) and not imagery. I exported the originals (I use a Managed Library) and converted them with QuickTime Player to MOV format and then imported and then replaced the file to which the problem then subsided.
I think it might have been down to the software I originally used to convert the videos, as I mentioned some were .mov and there aren't a lot of those things flying about on YouTube, I know I would have converted it (especially when the original file name has "YouTube" in it), of which QuickTime 7 would have been used because I could embed metadata, this obviously the course I took before Aperture accepted video formats because I notice that Aperture cannot import existing (custom entered) metadata into it.
What was really wired was that when importing files which were of the same name as the original (the one causing problems) that the file would disappear. I double checked by making a new copy of the file again and watching it import only to see it disappear before my eyes and nowhere to be found but in the Trash can, but why?
The difference being, that I can tell, is that unlike the FLV files the MOVs were always going to be MOVs (I always output moves as MOVs) and so Aperture must be doing something automatic when the conditions are right i.e. the file name matches and sends them strait to the Trash!
Even if I change the name of the video before importing the file it will keep doing this, not only that but the file cannot be traced back to it's location on my HDD, it just gets sucked in a lost inside Aperture, turning into a muffled (what seems to be unprocessed) image thumbnail of the video.
But it gets even weirder as I place those files into a folder for inspection (as the Trash can won't allow for metadata inspection, for some reason the pane is greyed out and inaccessible) those videos (still registered as such) turn out to be fuzzy pictures, not pliable at all.
However those conventions were with QuickTime X, using QT7 I was able to create (and then rename) a copy of the movie file (at almost exactly the same size in MB and so nothing was real changed!) and it imported okay. Now you might be thinking it was the way it was encoded, but one of those MOVs was always a MOV and came from QTX as a screen recording!
I don't know what's going on?! It seems to be that Aperture still has issues with other formats other than imagery, which was a major feature of the third release.
Now there are only two audio files that process and are done in the blink of an eye, I can live with that, thanks for your insight leonieDF. -
Sporadic Mail.app crashes when previewing messages with attachments
Hi,
Mail.app crashes about 10% of the time that I click on an e-mail with an attachment. It seems to crash as it is decoding the attachment for viewing in the preview pane of the application. It doesn't seem to matter what type the attachment is. I think it only happens in my main work IMAP account, not my .Mac account, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
Is anyone else having this problem, and does anyone have a suggestion for how I might fix it?
I keep hoping that it will get magically fixed at some system update, but it has persisted in 10.4.9.
A sample crash log is below.
Thanks,

PowerMac Quad G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) 4GB RAMI have also experienced this problem, since I started with 10.4.7 and through updates to 10.4.9. I would agree with the 10% estimate of the frequency of the problem, though today for some reason it has happened more frequently; I found this thread while searching the discussions for a solution.
I, too, am hestitant to archive and reinstall. This problem is annoying, but the hassle and risk of a reinstall worries me. Any other suggestions? I attach my most recent crash report, in case it might shed more light on this issue.
Thanks.
