Sporadic problems connecting to Windows Network

I'm one of two Mac persons on a Windows network here at work. The problem is that we often can't connect to the server/network. It's a Windows 2003 Server, and we're both running on Tiger.
What puzzles me is that we sometimes can log on to the network, and sometimes not.
Is there any explanation (or preferably a solution).
Thanks in advance!

IT should know this from their Logs, but if you have access to the Server, check it's time & the Macs' times when you can't connect.
For the other problem, might try to use one of these lines in terminal...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
sudo ifconfig en0 down;sudo ifconfig en0 up
Use en0 if Ethernet, en1 if Airport, in both places in either line.

Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network.
My Mac runs lion and the windows desktop runs Windows XP
I have tried for a few hours or so to connect my mac to this printer over a home network.
For your information it does work when connected directly to my mac using a USB Cable.
If there is no soultion could I have help getting the drivers for a Dell All-in-One Photo 926

In most cases you can connect to the Windows shared printer from the Mac. But there is a dependence on the Mac driver being compatible. For many consumer inkjets, the vendor created driver cannot be used for this type of connection so you need to look at alternative drivers, such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. If you can tell us which brand and model of printer you have shared from Windows then we can answer your question with the preferred procedure on the Mac.

I tried all the various suggestions already in the discussions including restore, restart, unplugging everything etc - still doesnt work. Any other new ideas? Reboot router, make sure it's up to date. If on wifi try ethernet. Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network).

I have 6 other apple devices that have no problem connecting to my network, but my Apple TV will not, any ideas?

1: Unplug / shut off the router for 30 seconds
2: Retore or unplug apple tv (If you unplug it, let it sit for 30 seconds as well)
3: If all else fails try moving the ATV and router closer to each other, if nothing works I would consider it a defect as Apple products generally have great quaility and you never know what goes on behind warehouse doors!

  • Printing Problems on my Windows Network

I have a MacBook Pro 15” set up to work on my household wireless network. I’m trying to print from the MacBook to either my HPLaserJet 6P or my HP OfficeJet 2210 and encounter problems. When I try to print to either printer from the MacBook, I get a page with characters printed on a few lines at the top and then nothing on the rest of that page; I also keep getting blank pages after the first page is done. I have to manually stop the printing. The characters at the top of the first page are ALWAYS as follows:
    %!PS-Adobe-3.0
    %RBINumCopies 1
    %%Pages: (attend)
    %APLDSCEncoding:UTF8
    %%Title: (L
I’ve downloaded and installed up to date drivers for both printers for OS X v10.4 from the HP website. (I’m running v10.4.8). I’m using a Linksys wireless router and my Mac ‘sees’ the shared drives and both printers as well as my workgroup in my Windows Network Neighborhood. Accessing the shared drives on the network from the Mac is not a problem.
Both printers are printing the same exact thing and behaving the same way. I have tried everything I can think of (uninstalling both printers and all drivers, downloading new copies of drivers and reinstalling them, reading books etc. etc.) I’ve about had it trying to troubleshoot this one. I can’t find any reference to this anywhere so far. Any help is appreciated.

Here's the walk-through of LPR printing on the IP protocol.
    http://itinfo.mit.edu/article.php?id=6664
Note that under "Printer Type" they select "LPD/LPR"
If your printer has an ethernet jack, then the queue name is usually left blank and each printer has its own IP number ("Printer Address"). In the example, they typed a server name under "Printer Address". Chances are, you will be typing in an IP number (192.168.1.78, for example - the number assigned to your printer or to your standalone printserver)
If you're connected through a printserver and it has only one port, generally, the "Queue Name" is left blank (don't write "nil" like they did in the example) and the IP number is that of the printserver.
If you have multiple ports on a printserver, then each port has a name (and the IP number is that of the printserver - same IP number for both ports). Be sure to type the port name into the "Queue Name" field in Print Utility for each printer connected to a port on the printserver.

  • Connection to Windows Network Shares

After installing 10.5 I lost my automatic (Active Directory Domain mapping upon logon) and manual connection to some of our critical Windows network shares. All worked fine under 10.4. All connection attempts fail and report in a dialog:
    Connection failed
There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
Manual connections then report in a dialog:
    Connecting to Server
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in
"cifs://netstore2.colgate.edu/student6" could not be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
Some of our servers connect fine but two of our most important servers do not. I haven't found a clear description of this in Apple support forums (but may have missed it in the flood of problems reported).
I have something that works for me based on something I read on the web (perhaps in one of the threads on http://www.macwindows.com/leopard.html but I can't find it now).
Our automatic mappings and my initial manual attempts use the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for our server - netstore1.colgate.edu. Replacing this with netstore1 works! I have no idea why (Something to do with WINS? Apple engineers?) but I'm using it for myself and others.
    That is:
    cifs://netstore1.colgate.edu/employee2/dwheeler fails (as does smb://...)
    while
    cifs://netstore1/employee2/dwheeler works (as does smb://...)
I just duplicated this failure/success using mount_smbfs, where the failure looks like:
    $ mount_smbfs //[email protected]/employee2/wheelerda ~/temp
mount_smbfs: server connection failed: Software caused connection abort
    and
    $ mount_smbfs //dwheeler@netstore1/employee2/wheelerda ~/temp
    simply works.
Hopefully this will help someone while Apple fixes the problem (they can probably blame Microsoft, but remember that this all worked fine in 10.4).

    Please make the following changes
On the Server whose map drives you don't see
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    Value: autodisconnect
    Data type : REG_DWORD
    Value: ffff (Hex)
    On windows 7 client
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
    Value Name: KeepConn
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 65535 (dec value in seconds)

  • Having problems connecting to wireless network when extended

Hi. I recently switched over to a mac and love it!! However I recently purchased a Time Capsule and a Airport Extreme to extend the network and am having problems. My macbook continues to log onto the guest network and not the main wireless network. When I try to switch to the main network it asks me for the WPA password and then it tries to connect but then states connection timeout. When I remove the guest network from my list of networks it will not allow me to connect to the internet at all through the main wireless network unless I power down the airport extreme that is extending the network. One final note, I have no problems at all if I keep the airport extreme shut down and do not extend the network. It seems it is not the time capsule but the airport extreme. One other additional note, my windows machines are having no problem connecting to the main wireless network with the network extended!!

    Welcome to the discussions!
    A few thoughts:
If you have not already done so, it will makes things easier to troubleshoot if you assign separate names to your "main" and "guest" network. By default, they are the same name and it sometimes is difficult to know what network you are actually connected to.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Look for an "options" button. This should allow you to assign a separate name for the "guest" network.
The "main" network can be extended, but the "guest" network cannot be extended. Your other computers may be connecting to the "guest" network unless they are newer devices capable of connecting at 802.11n only 5 GHz.
It's easy to make a mistake when setting up the "extend" feature. Please check the following settings for your TC and AirPort AX or AEBS (You posted in the Airport Express forum, but talk about having an AirPort Extreme in your post).
You will use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup as above to check your settings as follows:
    _On the Time Capsule:_
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be "Create a wireless network"
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    _On the AX or AEBS:_
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be set to "Extend a wireless network"
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
The Security and Password settings must match the settings of the TC exactly
You should now be able to identify whether your computers are connecting to the "main" or "guest" network. If your computers are connecting to the "guest" network, they are connecting directly to the Time Capsule regardless of their location in relation to your device that is extending the network.
Using your Mac, if you hold down the "option" key while you click on the fan shaped airport icon at the top of the screen, you will be able to see whether you are connected to the "main" network (802.11n 5 GHz) or the "guest" network" (802.11 2.4 GHz).
The BSSID will display the AirPort ID of the device that you are connected to. By noting the ID of your Time Capsule and AX or AEBS, you will know which device you are actually connected to on the network. As you move closer to the "extending" device, your computer should automatically switch to the device with the strongest signal.
Please post back on your findings.

  • My Apple TV is reading " There was a problem connecting to the network" error - 3906

I have reset all network components and the Apple TV.  I first set up Apple TV and it worked beautifully.  The next time I turned it on it gave me the error message.  I have tried reconnecting to the netwrk multiple times.  I have my laptop and my ipad connected to the network, but the Apple TV will no longer connect.  I am out of solutions.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I had the same problem. I just solutioned it just by disabling MAC Address filtering in my LinkSys router. This is strange as I did enter the address of my ATV3 in the list of allowed devices in the router configuration software.
The truth is that it now works! I just seems that ATV is not compatible with MAC Address filtering.

  • How to connect to windows network

Is there a way to connect your iPad and/or iPhone 5 to a Windows network?  If so how?

    Hi, Charlie -
I'm not insulted at all! I appreciate the dialog.
Here's what I can tell you. I checked the airport utility and it indicates specifically that the Airport Express is being used to "Extend a wireless network." It's not connected to the Airport Extreme by any cable.
Given the difference in indicated signal strength on my MacBook Air (I'm using it now and it's 3 feet away from the Mac Pro), I've got full strength on the Air but when I try to connect the Windows machine it indicates only 1 bar/unit of strength. I'm guessing that it's not seeing the Express (extended) but only the Extreme that's much farther away. I'm in the basement at one end of the house and the Extreme is on the second floor at the other end of the house. When I boot the Mac Pro to OS X I'm able to join the extended network. Hmmmmm...

  • Can't connect to Windows network (ethernet)

im trying to connect my macbook to existing, enterprise Windows network. im not at all concerned w/ sharing files on my mac... but i would like to be able to:
    1) use the (ethernet-based) Windows network for internet (its DHCP-based)
    2) use the Windows network's printers
    3) access Windows network shared folders
    ...having trouble.
currently, im plugged in via ethernet (good cable) and "Connected".
however, when selecting "Using DHCP" it says:
"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to
    connect."
...my Windows co-workers use DHCP, but their addresses are in the
10.5.2.x range; whereas mine is a 169.x.x.x address. somebody told me that:
+"This is an address used to request an address from the DHCP (Dynamic+
+Host Configuration Protocol) server for your network. Seeing this+
+means for whatever reason you are not getting assigned an address+
+by that server. The first thing I'd try is asking your network+
+administrator about it. It could be the network access is restricted."+
...ive checked, and we are not restricted; our admin thought i should be able to get an IP address.
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    sm

If you are not getting an address via DHCP, and your mac is set up to accept DHCP on the Ethernet network line, then you are probably not physically connected to the network. Tell your admin to help you get a connection to his network.
Second, to access a Windows Active Directory domain, have your admin use the Directory Utility located in the Utilities area of Finder (this is in Leopard, not sure about earlier versions) have him bind you to his Active Directory domain. The domain name is his AD domain name, and the computer name is what he and you want to name your computer. The reason he/she has to do it is because you need a Windows/AD admin user ID and password to do it, just like you were doing this to any Windows machine.
This makes accessing Windows objects easier. Alas, Windows printing via AD seems to have been broken with the 2008-002 security update, but I have to think this will be addressed.

  • One Z10 works fine, the other has problems connecting to mobile network

Hi, my wife and I both have Z10's, and we're both on the same mobile network (Wind Mobile in Canada). The wife's Z10 seems to have no problems connecting to or staying connected to Wind Mobile. Mine on the other hand seems to randomly drop the connection, or has trouble obtaining connection, and sometimes ends up roaming.
The only difference between the two Z10's is that hers is purchased through Wind Mobile itself, and it is locked to their network for the moment. I purchased mine a bit later, and I bought mine directly through Blackberry's online store, and mine is therefore unlocked. What I have to do sometimes is turn off the mobile connection, and turn it back on, and it works after I do that. However, that's annoying, as I'd rather have it automatically retry the network connection so that it doesn't go roaming within my own city.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you're passing by a Wind store in the near future, why not drop in and ask if they'll swap SIM cards for you? It could be something with the SIM.
In the meantime, try resetting your phone. This is equivalent to doing a battery pull and it's usually the first thing I recommend when troubleshooting an issue. Simply press and hold your power button for about 15 seconds until you see BlackBerry on your screen. Don't release the button before that and ignore anything that appears before BlackBerry.
Let us know if either of those solutions helps you.
    - If my response has helped you, please click "Options" beside my post and mark it as solved. Clicking the "thumbs up" icon near the bottom of my response would also be appreciated.

  • AE connected to Windows network

    Hi
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I have an AE connected via Ethernet to a Windows network. It seems something I am doing or not doing is causing their internet connection to fall over, it has happened 2/3 times in the last few days since I got connected. Is there some analysis I can do from my PB to find out what is happening or is there something the Windows network can tell us that points out the error. Thsi is a bit of a desparate situation because the network belongs to a company and they cannot have this happening all the time.
My AE is configured manually with IP addresses given out by their system administrator, I have configured the AE to distribute IP addresses for my PB via DHCP. Is there something the AE is telling the Windows system that it doesn't like. They have a serious firewall installed, whatever that means in Windows systems.
    Thank you
    Rob D

Since you are connected to a network that already has a DHCP server, Distribute DHCP on the AX should be DISABLED.

  • My phone is having problems connecting to wifi networks

Hi I have the blackberry curve 3G smart phone and for the past week it has been connected to the local wifi at my accomadation in phuket. I am from South Africa and my service provider failed to activate my international roaming so I was using the wifi for BBM.  It would automatically connect perfectly everytime I arrived at my bungalow (and yes BIS is part of my cellular package) and has been active for atleast a year so far. For some reason today it is unable to connect. it says " failed to obtain an IP address" . after attempting to connect multiple times it states "Device failed to acquire an IP address. The failiure could be due to an incorrect WEP key.", I have checked the WEP key multiple times on my laptop and Im entering the correct one into my black berry.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    - Turning the phone on and off
    - Removing the battery and re-inserting it
    - I have tried manually connecting to the network
    -  I have tried connecting with the phone set to "automatically obtain IP address and DNS"
    - De-activating "automatically obtain IP address and DNS" and entering the IP address myself, once i have done this it states that I am connected to the network but I am still unable to use my internet browser and instant messaging services.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I bought my iPhone 3 days ago, and am also having trouble connecting to ANY wifi networks. The iphone scans for networks, sees them, but fails to latch on once the connect buttn is selected. I've called iPhone tech support and ran through a multitude of tests with them, including full system restores, trying the main power switch, flight mode toggles etc..
The conclusion from iPhone telephone support was that the unit is faulty and needs to be returned to be checked out.
I'm starting to wonder with the numerous wifi connection problem reports I've found on the web about others having trouble, whether this product was rushed to market with half baked software...
