Spot of dust got stuck on PB display...

Hi,
On the display of my PowerBook, a spot of dust got stuck. I user iClean to clear the display. But I am scared to clean this particular spot on the display; afraid that it will cause permanent damage to the screen. Any ideas on how should I go about it?
Also, can someone recommend a nice screen protector made for PB 15"?
Thanks for your help in advance!!
Brilty

I have no idea whether or not you made that up, but you certainly didn't read about it in these forums, where every complaint, worry, concern and paranoid fantasy about PowerBooks has been done to death. And I know, because I've read just about every one of these posts.
Wether or not there is more space between the screen and kbd on the Titanium and Aluminum models is irrelevant.
Of course, this claim is absurd. The difference in space between the two models is an important improvement in the PB's design, not only for the sake of the well-documented imprints the TiBook's keyboard left on its screen, but for the sake of keeping the machine cool when it's used in clamshell mode. Again, the keyboard does not make contact with the screen unless pressure is applied from the outside or for the sake of third party products placed on the inside.
The small rubber bumpers on the screen enclosure do little to protect your screen from even the mild pressure exerted on your laptop while in most soft carry bags
The small rubber bumpers are not intended to protect the screen from the keys, because the screen doesn't need protection from the keys, except in the conditions I've described. The small rubber bumpers are intended to keep the bezel from rubbing on the edges of the palm rests where discoloration of the palm rests and the bezel can occur. This is a purely cosmetic issue, and it is something that was only added to the PB's design in recent revisions. It has never been a part of the 17" model's design because its dual latch resists this sort of contact.
To further illustrate, look at the abundant aftermarket products available that address this very issue.
The presence of these products on the market does not mean that they serve any useful purpose beyond providing peace of mind to paranoid consumers. People don't buy these products "to circumvent a potential design flaw in the PowerBooks." They buy these products because of the FUD that goes around in discussion boards. None of these products, including the screen cleaning products, are endorsed or recommended by Apple (though I do swear by Monster iClean).

  • Black Spots/ Smudges/ Dust Problem with Apple Cinema Displays

my 24" cinema display from 2010 developed dust/ stains in the lower left corner of the display after about 1,5 years in use. see the attached picture. the problem is mostly seen in imacs. there is a long thread in the macroumors forum describing this problem and showing a not easy solution.http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1101370. i'm convinced that there is the same problem with some of the ACD like mine. probably the cause oft his problem is the sealing between display and backlight (see the description by oggy in the above linked thread) which allows that circulating air can bring dust between the two panels. it looks really like a design flaw. if you are in guaranty apple will change the panel. without guaranty no chance of help. but even the panel is changed the problem can occur again. but there are some hints that apple is investigating this problem. please post your experiences how apple is handling your case if you have the this problem.

Hi, I have tried shifting them around, and the problem does seem to follow the graphics card, despite all tests indicating they are both working properly. Any other arrangements will cause a grey screen to come down while starting up and say I need to restart the computer.
Changing the slots for the graphic cards, but keeping the display attached in the right place, would allow the computer to turn on but a window would come up saying that they weren't optimally configured (16x or 8x or 4x speeds). The best configuration remains the one I begun with (slots 1 and 4). The computer will only start properly with the display in slot 4, right hand side looking at the back of the display, and only when it's turned on will it allow me to attach the second monitor, again, only in slot 4, to the left side.
The same would work if the card was in slot 1, but it would tell me they weren't configured ideally so I put the card back in slot 4.
At this point, then (I have also just tried resetting the PRAM by pressing cmdoption+PR when restarting, but no changes) should I reconfigure the graphics card? (If yes, how do I do it?)
    Thanks again, Valentina

  • Dust Stuck on rMBP Display

    Hey all,
My Retina MacBook Pro was delieverd to me last week, and I have noticed that there seems to be dust stuck on the display of the laptop. It is in a pretty noticeable spot, just left to centre on the display. It is quite distracting when watching movies, or generally using the machine against a dark backdrop. I at first thought it was a dead pixel, but I noticed that the anomoly is still visible when the system is powered off. I have had a few dead pixels on a few other desktop displays that I use and I can generally live with that, but this seems to be much worse and more distracting than your typical dead pixel.
I have tried my best to remove the dust from the screen, by rubbing it with a microfiber cloth which has not worked. I have also gently rubbed it with my finger, but to no avail also. I can actually feel the dust on the display itself when rubbing it with my finger. Does anyone have any other cleaning suggestions?
The very fact that I have been unable to remove the dust is leading me to believe that it is embedded between the display and the outerglass casing. I am nearly certain that the dust was not there since day one as I would have noticed it, so would it be possible that dust would have somehow found its way between the glass and the display? And if that is the case, what are my options? I bought the Retina model and had hoped to enjoy a prisitine screen, but this issue is a bit of a bleamish on such a fine screen.

What happened, Sierra? I have the exact same issue...a "dust spot" that actually looks like a puncture on the screen. I'm wondering what my chances are for having a cosmetic issue addressed.
You won't know that until you call Apple Care, get a case number if you are still under warranty.  If out of warranty, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

Disconnect the iPad, do a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe!, reconnect and follow the prompts.

You can try a soft-reset of pressing and holding both the home and sleep buttons for 10 to 15 seconds so that it reboots, but you are likely to get the same screen. If it does then it will need to be connected to a computer's iTunes so that it can be reset back to factory defaults - do you have a friend with a computer with iTunes installed on it, or is there an Apple store nearby that you could try going to (if there is then preferably make a Genius Bar appointment at it, or don't go at a busy time) ?
Has she been backing up to the cloud ? If she has then she should be able to restore to that. If not then what she can redownload for free from the stores will show in the Purchased tabs in the store apps.

It sounds a lot like your phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it prior to your trying to update it.
If that is the case, it is nowpermanently bricked.

  • Desktop Manager 5.0 got stuck at the final stage during installation

Hi, I am trying to install/upgrade desktop manager software from 4.7 to 5.0. It started smoothly, got installed but the last window got stuck at "setup window, which says"Please wait while stup loads, it may take several minutes'. On the other hand software has been upgraded.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.
    1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)
    2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM DTM software:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software
    3) Get a fresh download of the RIM DTM software:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
Choose the version that is newest and (if applicable) compatible with your PIM (if you are synchornizing via USB):
KB12268 Applications supported by BlackBerry Desktop Manager for synchronization
    4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    5) Install DTM to your PC
    6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package
    7) Start the organizer configuration over:

Hopefully that will get things going again.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Access to the data on the device requires that the device be functioning, which is exactly what it cannot do. This simply proves out that backups, like insurance, are neither a reactive nor an optional activity.

  • SAP Workflow got stuck

    Hi Guys,
We have a very peculiar situation in our project where a workflow got stuck in the system when processed.
We have Leave Request as workflow in our system, it has been there for around 2 years and so. It's been working absolutely fine but couple of days ago when an employee raises a request for leave, it gets stuck in the system after being rejected (2 points I'd like to bring to knowledge that it was not the first time any request was being rejected and the user in question had many other requests which worked absolutely fine).
The request shows in the inbox of the approver but when he opens he can't do/see anything (creates a lot of confusion for him).
We have already fixed the issue by approaching the requester and asking him to delete his request BUT still everyone is wondering how the situation had arisen.
Has anyone faced something this before? Can anyone explain me situations under which it can happen?
Anything that makes sense and helps us to avoid the situation in future.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean

I am a bit confused. You say that a work item is stuck in the user's inbox, but then you say that the issue has been fixed? If the work item is still in the inbox, but a user cannot process it (or it opens as empty, etc.), I would say that you still have an issue. This is not normal.
You need to get rid of the work item (perhaps after this your department lead will relax?). What is the status of that work item that is sitting in the inbox? If it is NOT in status COMPLETED or CANCELLED (=logically deleted), then it is logical that the work item is still in the inbox. Then you just need to logically delete the work item (or preferably you should delete the parent item of the whole workflow).
If the work item is already completed or deleted, but it is still visible, then you have something wrong in the system. I assume that by inbox you mean UWL? If UWL is displaying an already completed item, then your problem is in UWL / Portal server (probably you need to clear cache, perhaps restart the server, or something like that).
What comes to the root cause analysis: You need to open the workflow log and check the details of each work item. You should pay attention to the approval work item (and if there are no error messages in that, then check the parent work item). Perhaps you will find there some semi-logical explanation for this problem ("Work item cannot be completed because of...").
    Kind regards,
    Karri

  • How to reset Iphone 4 that got stuck and has blackscreen   power button not working

    Hello,
i got an iphone 4 and today it somehow got stuck while i was using it. The screen was active but nothing moved anymore. Then after some seconds the display got inactive (black) and when i pressed the home-button, it doesnt react anymore. Since my power-button is already broken for 2 years, i cant turn it off or reset it.
Is there any possibility to reset my phone, so that it is working again?
    Some more details:
    - Calling my phone still works, but my screen stays black and i cant take the call (with clicking where i usually take the call)
    - i can still charge it and it vibrates once i put it to the powercable
Thank you very much for any help already!
ps: I cant imagine that something should be wrong with my display since it worked properly until it got stuck and the screen didnt move anymore. Then after it got black, it doesnt do anything anymore :/

That was my only idea as well. Does anyone know, if some apple-repair centar can do sth in worst case if that advice doesnt help.

i accidently downloaded something that made my webcam flash on spuradically even once i deleted it. when i restarted my computer it got stuck at the white loading screen with the grey apple and wont go past there..what is wrong? will applecare cover this?  my computer also slowed down drastically before it stopped working..thanks! HELP PLEASE!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.
