Spot&Patch presets

I am trying to use Spot&Patch tool. After each fixed blemish the settings (softness, opacity, etc) return to default.
How to keep the same preset for at least one image ( this adjustment does not have Preset Action pop-up menu)?
Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is they assume that instead of using presents for that, you would be lifting and stamping Spot applications from other images.
However, I would like to see presets there as well in order to define some common edge softening and other parameters...

  • 10.4.4 fixes many-spot patch export bug

Some of you may have found that when you applied more than fifteen or so spot/patch fixes to an image, that many of these patches would be replaced by little squares on export - this is now fixed.
I tried both with an old image that had this problem before (around 35 spot/patch adjustments applied), and also a new one I just randomly slapped 20-30 spot repairs on.

    <...>
I believe he also said that
you can now export a new master to Photoshop and it
will still maintain the EXIF data you plug in while
in Aperture vis a vis Photo Mechanic.
You meant open a version for external editing, right? I just like to keep terms clear...
Anyway, it's true enough that keywords I entered in APerture show up in Phtooshop as well, very nice. One thing that would be kind of nice is for Aperture to take any EXIF updates back into itself - so if for some crazy reason I entered a new keyword in Photoshop or edited EXIF it would be nice if Aperture picked that up on return. I know it doesn't read new keywords, I had not tried altering EXIF data.
I am also pleased to hear verification that RAW updates are still coming, I figured they just were not included for some reason.

  • Ultrabeat Patches/Presets Question

I'm sure this will have been asked & probably answered before but i have done a search & found nothing on it.
    So I'll apologize now.
Ok Ultrabeat patches or Ultrabeat presets.
I know that Logic 8 already has an extensive library of presets for Ultrabeat but i have pretty much been through them & used them to death.
My question is this , Is there any way i could get hold of more Ultrabeat presets or even more patches for the step sequencer.
    Thank You

    Hi Sampeconstruct
Ive started down the programming them myself route to be honest i was being lazy
Not much response so i assumed the answer to my question was no
It was more the patterns to use in the sequencer i was after really
Ive been getting some interesting grooves using the transform window in the piano roll aswell after creating a sequence in UB

  • Dim spots/patches on screen

I noticed on my powebook display a couple of months ago some what appear to be like dim patches on my screen. I have 3 spots of them in the upper right hand corner of the screen, I thought it was dirt but I cleaned the screen and no change! the pixels arnt dead but the patches just dont seem as bright as the rest of the display around them.
anyone had simular issues or anyone got any ideas what this is?
    Thanks
    Adam

What kind of "spots" are you guys talking about? Have your screens got bumped or dinged by something? I have little spots on the right-hand side of my screen that no longer work, but I think something is squeezing or bumping my screen while I carry it in my pack.

  • Spot & Patch tool - Need help?

I can't find any literature on how to use this tool. I have tried it but don't see any change to the image. I have started by making a small point with the tool and then enlarged the circle a bit bit I don't know how to activate the process. Can someone point me to the specific literature or let me know how to use it?

here is an adjustment tool guide by one of the regular contributors here ...

it is for v 1.0.1 but spot and patch hasn't really changed ...

  • Question on Spot and Patch Tool

    Hi,
I don't know if it is not knowing how to use it properly or not, but I have a great deal of trouble with that tool sometimes. I have a difficult time getting a spot/patch to blend properly. For example, if I take out a dust spot, sometimes the patch or spot looks too plain with no noise, so it doesn't blend in properly. I have tried fiddling with the softness and other settings and sometimes it gives an acceptable result(usually an area of constant colour range like blue sky), and other times it just doesn't seem possible to get it to blend in properly?
Is this a limitation of the tool ?

I used it last night for the first time - it works best for removing obvious blemishes - it would take ages to remove lines etc - a lot depends on the source for the patch - has to be virtually identical to the area one wants to amend. I used it to great effect to get rid of a giant dribble from the chin of my 2 y/o daughter - took some pixels from the bid and hey presto dribble gone and hello bib - it would be v useful to get rid of eg stains on a dirty bib (you can see what my main subject is these days) also on a face getting rid of a zit or similar - as for lines I think that is v delicate work and not sure it is suited to that - of course I could be wrong.

  • Saving spot and patch adjustments

After using spot and patch, the circles delineating my spot and patch work remain. How do I save the image after spotting and patching so that I can view the image as complete without the track marks of my work?
    Thanks very much.
    p.s.
I think Apple has made a big mistake with their very high fee for support.

And it's also worth pointing out that even when the Spot & Patch tool is NOT selected, you can still adjust all of the Spot & Patch parameters on the Adjustments HUD or Panel without seeing the yellow target circles.
I do this all the time, because it's much easier to make these adjustments without the circles visible. With the Spot & Patch tool selected, click on the particular spot that you want to modify. Then press "A" to switch back to the Selection tool (to hide the circles) and then make your adjustments to Opacity, Softness, etc. with an unobstructed view.
    Same deal works for Red-eye.

  • Spot and patch random behaviour

    hi,
i have been using the spot/patch tool. i edit my images full screen, select the point to patch, and everything works fine.
then i look at the images in the regular window, or maybe open them later on, and the patch circle is right there where i put it, but no adjustment is there anymore. actually, the adjustment is in the photo, but somewhere else (down an inch, on a side or so on). i do not do anything else than using the tool, selecting the spot, getting the circle and the right adjustment, closing the image.
any ideas on how to stop this. it is making the tool quite unusable, unless i print/save atiff right after (and that does not make sense).
    thanks,
    @lberto

It must only be impacting the thumbnails because when I export a copy out of the photo with a problem the spot and patch adjustments are there whereas when you view it within aperture they aren't. Also at times when you go back to the photo within aperture is shows it's fine but a few minutes later it won't be. The actual file must have the adjustments on it since it exports out fine.

  • Re touching and spotting slow.

one tell me, is there any way to speed up the work flow and the time it takes for each spotting and re touching. Ad what the **** are those gold rings when using the spot patch and how to get rid of them when using the tool. ?????

    right.
Are you running your Speed tests from your Computer or Playstation 3
The FAT playstation 3s have very cheap wireless and an even worse wired network card, tha could give a slow download result, I have a 2 meg line, and a 15mb patch on my PC would take a few mins, but on the PS3, 15 mins. The PS3 slim is alot better.
COD is a player hosted game. The benefit of having a decent connection like infinity is that you will end up being the host more often, this in a way gives you an advantage over everyone else, particuly if you are matched again foreign competitors. You saying you want to be unbeatable, suggests to me that you would rather be at advantage to everyone else, allowing you to pad your stats, making it appear you are very good at the game, when in fact your fast Internet connection is doing most of the work.
You should instead try to go to LAN gaming events to get a better indication of how good you are, you could even win some money if you are really good, Internet gaming leaderboards mean nothing, as they are easily manipulated, especialy in a game like COD, which is full of cheaters and network manipulaters.

  • Exported JPGs with patch have Big Black Box - ugh

I've seen a few other threads related to this, but I haven't found a solution: when I export a JPG that's been patched in Aperture, I get terrible corruptions - check out this example. It seems to happen every time. I'm on a 24" iMac with an upgraded video card and 2GB RAM, using RAW images from a D70 exported as mid-size JPEGs. Anybody got a fix/idea/something for this? Or am I going to have to clean my lenses more often ??

1.5.2 says it addresses image export, but it doesn't state which bug(s) corrected.
I haven't exported a bunch of images since, but I was plagued with this under 1.0-1.5.1.
    Workaround (for affected images):
Go into full screen. Pause for a second
    Export image
(I run Activity Monitor to show CPU activity)
Wait until CPU activity drops to baseline
    Go on to next image.
For really stubborn (i.e. lots of spot/patches), I would use zoom to 100% and scroll around the whole image to ensure it was all held in memory at full res.

  • How would you take a patch and flip it, half mustash missing?

On a boat and half of the mustash is washed out,. Could you take a patch from the other side and flip it or would there be an easier was to burn it in?
    Murff

Cou can take a patch from the other side and rotate it (-180° -+180°) with the "Spot&Patch" Adjustment, but that will not mirror/flip it.
It might be easier to use the brushes to sharpen the contours and to darken the patch with the level sliders, if the "Burn" brush does not suffice. You also might try to brush in more "Definition".

  • Independent instrument/voice presets?

I finally got to try out Mainstage during a practice. I ended up using the keyboard/vocal channel strips so I could do both keys/voice- but had to modify the instrument portion to reflect my desire AU's. Is there any way of mixing and matching instrument channel strips and vocal channel strips on the same concert- I would like to have a list of my favorite pads/leads that I can choose from- and at the same time- pick from a set of different vocal setups. It seems that I am only able to do 1 setup with both a specific instrument and vocal channel strip.
    Hopefully that makes sense.

Yes, you can create individual sets and songs that contain various combinations of the channel strips with the instrument that you want and just select the preset that you need, when you need it.
Each patch can contain multiple channel strips with different AU's according to your needs.
Alternative, or In addition to, you could also create certain patches/presets with "extra" channel strips that you can then externally control via a MIDI controller and bring up certain instruments when you need them.

  • IMach 27 dark patches, lines, bands & yellowing -my Apple Honeymoon is over

I purchased a top-of-the-line Apple iMac 27” (2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM) in June 2010 for my new software development startup. The stunning all-in-one display was a big factor in my choosing a Mac over a Windows PC, for which I had been primarily programming earlier. The Apple reseller I purchased this from strongly recommended that I also purchase the 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) so I could get peace of mind with this new system, as AppleCare would cover the complete system, including the display, for 3 years as opposed to just one year without it. Additionally, APP would provide at home repair and I needn’t lug the system around in case it needed service. I trusted Apple with my money, and purchased the APP to cover my investment in the iMac, not knowing that all this was hogwash and I would still need to run from pillar-to-post when the time to seek repairs actually came.
Within just six months, I started noticing some dark spots / patches on the screen. At first I thought that these were on top of the glass but when I looked closely and made sure the glass screen was clean, I was shocked to find that the patches were within the display itself. I was still not very worried and trusted that Apple would take care of the problem as I had the AppleCare Protection for 3 years and it was still well within the first year that I had this problem.
I contacted Apple support and logged a support case with them on 25th November 2010. Apple referred this case to their authorized support center (UC Infosystems) and the technician who saw the system acknowledged the problem and mentioned that the screen needed a replacement, and Apple would cover it as it was under warranty. The service center ordered a screen and came over to replace it. The first screen they got was clearly defective as it had prominent dark bands running from left to right through the entire width of the monitor. Needless to say, the technician took the screen back right away and asked me to wait for another replacement while they got it from Apple. The replacement screen came and it was changed on 3rd December 2010. Upon replacement, I noticed that while the screen did not have any patches, it did have a dark band in the bottom edge as well as yellow tinge across the right and bottom edges as well as in the center. When I mentioned it to the service technician, he brushed it aside saying that it wasn’t a problem and it was probably my imagination. He suggested that I work with the system for a few days and contact them in case I still have a problem. I reluctantly agreed as the main issue of the patches had been resolved, and I didn’t want to create a fuss about this somewhat subjective issue.
To my shock, within 2-3 weeks of having the replacement screen, I started noticing dark spots and lines developing once again. This time, the problem was even more severe than what I had with my original screen. Photos of the display showing this problem are here:
    * http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/7359/img3211x.jpg
    * http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/3755/img3213j.jpg
    * http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4049/img3209r.jpg
The photos have been taken in a dark room to avoid any reflections, and to give a true picture of the problem. The display is clean on the outside and the dark patches and lines are very visible in the top right corner extending to almost the middle of the display. There is a prominent dark band near the bottom edge going across the screen. Additionally, you will notice that there is yellow banding on the right and bottom edges of the screen and a yellowish patch in the middle.
I contacted Apple support once again (on 28th December 2010), and was assigned another support case (Case Ref # 195112734). The Apple service and support center technician came by and took photos of the screen with his mobile phone to send to Apple before they could order a replacement. He also acknowledged that the display was indeed defective and needed a replacement. Additionally, he mentioned that while this problem was widespread, Apple recently started denying some screen replacements without much explanation. I still had my trust in Apple as they had built a reputation for good products and service.
The same evening, I was shocked to receive an email from the service center that ‘Apple had declined to cover this issue under warranty’ without any other explanation or reason and that I should contact AppleCare if I had an issue with that. I was completely shocked that they could do this as the problem was clearly in their display, the system was less than seven months old, and I had also purchased AppleCare Protection Plan for ‘peace of mind’ which clearly I didn’t get given this episode. I called AppleCare and narrated this to the support representative. His noted mentioned that the issue had been resolved (without any clarification on how it was resolved)! He then consulted with his supervisor who spoke with me and mentioned that technical people had seen the photos of the iMac display and determined that there is no defect/problem with it, and hence Apple could not cover the issue. I mentioned to him that the service technician had taken his photos in poor light with a mobile phone camera and I had better photos that clearly show the issue. The supervisor asked me to email him the photos and said that he would immediately take up the matter with the technical engineers. However, he mentioned, that there were no promises that Apple would cover the issue, despite the issue occurring on a screen Apple itself had put in just 3 weeks ago and my having purchased AppleCare Protection Plan. I emailed him the photos right away and requested either repairing or replacing the display. This happened yesterday and I am awaiting a call or email back in response.
I should also mention that I take good care of my computers, don’t smoke (if smoke damage is what Apple is thinking of blaming this on), and that the system is kept in a nice, clean, low-traffic home-office environment, where I have 5 other computers/laptops/UMPCs which have no such issues. I have purchased several Apple systems (including a MacBook Pro laptop, two Mac Minis, iPhones – both 1st Generation and 3G as well as a couple of vintage Macs) and not needed to report issues to AppleCare in the past. Now, when I truly needed the AppleCare support, I am being denied it. I am a reasonable person with low demands, but the way Apple is treating me with this case is pathetic.
I sincerely believe that I have a genuine support case and I am not getting the product and service that I paid top dollar for. The display I got was clearly defective as the pictures show for themselves (and the problem is with a new display that Apple just provided three weeks ago!) No amount of environmental factors in my home office can cause the issues I am having. Apple needs to own up to the problem and be the company with high morals that Steve Jobs is presenting it as.
I will keep you updated on how this case proceeds, but a few disappointing things I am learning of now are:
    • Apple iMac 27” screen isn’t really that gorgeous and cannot even last through it’s warranty period without developing dark spots, lines, bands and yellow tinges.
    • Apple is trying to refuse acknowledging that their iMac’s displays have a design or manufacturing defect that is causing these issues (dark spots/patches, lines and bands, yellow tinge). This is despite the fact that several people have reported these issues and posted pictures online showing the problem.
    • AppleCare Protection Plan is hogwash. Apple can refuse coverage under the plan, and the customer is at their mercy. This plan certainly didn’t give me the peace of mind that I thought I bought when I paid for it. This is even within the first year of purchase!
    • While Apple products are gorgeous to look at, they are not built to last. If your Apple computer develops a problem, you’re out of luck. Your honeymoon is over. Given the number of issues people are reporting with the iMac 27, especially with the display, this is more likely to happen than not.
Given my experience, this iMac will be my last Apple purchase, and I wouldn’t recommend Apple products to anyone, nor develop software for the Mac, unless the issue is satisfactorily taken care of by Apple.
    Warm regards,
    Rohit Singh

I have the same problem on my iMac 27" Core i5.
As an engineer, I'm thinking that a possible reason is that there is uneven temperature distribution over the LCD.
There are so many components behind the LCD, but they have different heat generation rate (e.g., the GPU, which is on the top-right corner, is usually the hottest spot). This will lead to some hot spots and (relatively) cool spots on the back of the LCD. Everything will expand when heated and contract when cooled, including different areas on the LCD. When some hotter areas on the LCD expand, while other areas do not, there will be stress. This will lead to dark spots and bands, just like pressure damage on the LCD (if something keeps pressing an area on an LCD all the time, there will eventually be a dark spot).
However, obtaining uniform temperature distribution is a really hard engineering problem, not considering different users will have different habits using the computer (i.e., different temperature profiles). It's not easy to solve this perfectly.
A fan control software may fix the problem if it can give a more uniform temperature distribution over the LCD by controlling the fan speed (and thus the temperatures) in a more robust way. However, without a fan control software (or other additional cooling approaches), the computer will be very hot, and there will be burn-in issues on the LCD.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • Going back/away from aperture

i have this problem with importing DNGs with all my settings (see my other post).
that made me think, what if in a year or two i decide to migrate away from aperture to another software (lightroom, captureone, unknown)?
is it possible to export your files/adjustment/settings and import them in another application?
i don't seem to be able to do it, as of now.
also, how do you make IVMP to read aperture adjustments? not keywords, image adjustments.
    thanks,
    @lberto

I'm not sure how helpful this will be Alberto, as your needs for metadata probably overshadow mine. Plus I have a RAW supported camera: key issue!!!
Prior to Aperture, I used PS CS2/ACR/Bridge combo. I set date/time in camera and diligently changed for time zones.
Import from CF card to "Unprocessed" folder under project/event under location under year folder structure
Rename in Finder using "Renamer4Mac" utility
    Save to DVD
Select in Bridge, open a select into ACR and save as PSD to "Part Processed" folder
Continue (hand notes for images processed I've done ... ugh) [BTW, comments/notes in Aperture has been requested by some folks and its a great idea in my mind]
Open each image in CS2 and adjust/crop/save ... as different versions for different print or crops. Save to "Processed" folder
    Burn folder to DVD
    Post-process in Pages, InDesign ...
With Aperture .... BTW: I do not generate Previews until I've completed the project
    Copy CF card to disk
    Burn DVD
Import from disk to new Project: name files using import naming options (I tend to use custom). Add Copyright and keywords (I tend to add a superset and then remove ad hoc later). Set auto-stack time to make as much sense as possible (adjust discrepancies manually later). Then import.
    First pass:
Scan images sequentially and reject, or mark as 1*, 3*, 5*. Note that Aperture caches the next/last images so this speeds up image "Loading" times considerably.
    Adjust any stack membership
    Second pass:
Adjust RAW settings ad hoc (for shadowy or very bright or shiny surface images I use different RAW presets)
Adjust for any exposure, levels, shadow/highlight, WB etc.
    Adjust straighten then dust
    Create different crop versions
Amend * ratings up/down and esp. for crop preferences
Alter keywords (delete or add additional if necessary)
Output to external editor (around 2% images) for filters or blemishes above/beyond spot/patch
    Set stack pick
Once this pass is complete, I generate full res. JPG's
    Back up to Vault
From that point I'm into post-process, and I'm doing the majority of that from Aperture direct into Pages and iWeb or from Aperture itself.
Except for panoramas, where I export TIF's to Calico, and re-import the new image, then manually stack with the original images, I hardly move out of Aperture. My use of CS2 has dropped from 100% to a couple of %, and those tend to be for soft filter actions applied to unmask, liquify filter or occasionally I'll use Nik plug-in's or clone stamp and healing brushes with pen sensitivity.
As I said up front, I'm not sure how useful this will be. I didn't feel a need for PhotoMechanic or iView, and my level of pain with Bridge/ACR/CS2 was easy for me to leave .... even Aperture 1.0 with less than ideal hardware was a significant productivity gain.
Working between Aperture and other apps. is likely to be tiresome. Working within Aperture becomes really smoooooth.
So, unless you absolutely must have can't live without the world will end some function of these, consider how you could make do with Aperture's nearest equivalent. Give a negative score to Aperture though. If a function is required, then can you export to/import from at a point in an Aperture centric workflow? If so, score as a negative to Aperture. (If you cannot see how to interface to Aperture, ask. If the answers still no, then you know.) Then, score the things that Aperture gives you as a benefit. If your tally is net positive (and I trust that it will), or a net negative, you've answered your question.
