Spot retouching on big b/w Tiffs impossible?

Hi there,
Had to work on some big Tiffs these days. Flextight scans of 6/6 cm. b/w negatives. Around 200 Mb each. I'm on a brandnew Imac (16 GB 1333 Mhz / Intel Core i7) here and most of the adjustments work well and fast. Only the retouch tools (repair and clone) are completely unusable. Within a few minutes the rendering starts to slow down to impossible working times. Checked the same files in Photoshop on another older Mac with 4 GB ram only. Here spot retouching flew fast. Why is it that Aperture 3 cannot do this? It would save so much time if one wouldn't have to jump to PS only for this.

I noticed also that while working on a new version from the original (scanned) Tiff I couldn't duplicate my problem and all seemed to work fine for at least 10 minutes. When I start to continue working on the version that slowed down completely the same thing happens again. Could there have been some error introduced in this version somehow? (The above stated numbers don't differ much working on both versions)

  • This white spots, and a little magenta line

I noticed recently that I have a couple of those white spots now on the right, center portion of my screen. I have one of the very first Aluminum PowerBook's, I got it in January 2004 immediately after the Titanium's were replaced. It's one slightly larger white spot, a smaller one above it as well a couple in the center. Also, there is a smallish magenta line on the right side of the screen. Is this a bad pixel(s)? I know these white spots were a big issue before, but at the time my computer didn't have them but now they do. Is this something AppleCare can help me with?

The same thing happened to me, and yes they should take care of it.
What you need to do is visit the Apple store and see a Genius to submit the repair request. All he needs to do is take a look at it and see if it's worthwhile. Most likely it is. When the Genius saw mine, he immediately said "yep I see it, anyone could see it..." And my 2 white spots were about than 1/16." Then they'll ship it off for you and probably replace the LCD. Mine should come back in a couple days.

  • JAI Multiple page Tiff's into one multiple page tiff

    Please helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
I have been hammering on jai.create and other stuff and can't get this to run. I am trying to merge two multiple-page tiff's into one big multiple page tiff and it only picks up first page each from both the files !!!
so if i have a 3-page tiff and a 4-page tiff...it will pick up first page from both the files. Im releatively new to java but have spent a couple of days on this already.

    Hi Sandra,
You have ExportPDF subscription from Adobe which would not combine files for you. It is only used to convert PDF into different formats.
For Combining PDF you might to purchase the different subscription : PDF Pack

  • Why "Save as Tiff" does not carry forward the Overprint Settings?

I always receive PDFs with Spot Color 100% set as overprint from my clients.
When I am saving these PDFs as Tiff from Acrobat Pro, everything goes fine except that the overprint settings from these PDFs are gone (checked with Photoshop). May I know how can I retain the overprint settings in the Tiff?
I found that in Acrobat 7, not only the Spot Colors, even the Black has this similar issue too.
I need to solve these issues urgently, hope someone can advise. Thanks!

    Thank you, Steve.
Just for discussion, Acrobat 7 doest not keep the Black overprint after converting to Tiff but Acrobat 8 does keep the Black overprint (too bad does not apply to Spot Color yet) after converting to Tiff. It shows that it can be done on Tiff too although it is not a PostScript format.
I need this feature to convert PDF to Tiff, is there any way to keep the overprint as the PDF?
    Thanks!

  • Intel chipset drivers installation under Win2000 IMPOSSIBLE!!

    Hello,
I want to use my Toshiba Satellite P10-792 with Windows 2000 Professional, but I have a big, big problem: It is impossible to install the Intel chipset drivers!
I've tried both the newest version and the "Toshiba download"(5.0) version of the intel drivers, but anything change: The installation utility doesn't recognize the chipset and/or the OS (Win2k SP 4).
What can I do? It isn't a good thing at all that Toshiba doesn't explain the detailed chipset of the notebook's motherboard...
Please answer me, I can't use the notebook now!
    Thanks,
    Marco

    Hello dieresi,
It is not simple to help you because you did not write exactly what happened. Is there some Massage? What happens after installation? Which Drivers did you install first?
As fair I know the installation hierarchy is sometimes very important. After you install OS (with or without SP) you must install Intel chipset driver and then other drivers.

  • Impossible to generate legends of text automatically.

I have a big probleme : it's impossible to generate legends
of text automatically with Captivate 1 and 2. The captures animated
    do not function either.
    Thank you for your help
    EmG

Can you check a couple of things?
    1. mentioned that the specific recipient wants plain text in Tools | Address book... 'prefers to receive mesages formatted as 'Plain Text' and click on OK to save changes.
Is there a conflict..Have you checked that there is only one entry for that person. They are not somewhere else in another address book like Collected Addresses etc.
re: 'Yet, the outgoing message is visualised as HTML both in my Thunderbird outbox and in the receiving inbox on a webmail system'
    2. Edit | Preferences | Composition | Send Options
    * Under 'Text Format' section. Have you selected to send emails as:
    * ''''Send the message in both Plain text and HTML''''
    * Then click on OK to save send options.
    * then click on ok to save Options.
    3. Edit | Account Settings | <account name > | Composition & addressing
If you uncheck 'compose messages in HTML' and then click on OK to save changes, this will only allow you to compose messages in Plain Text.
If you have this selected so that you can compose in html and also have set the option (see 2 above) to send the email as both HTML and Plain Text AND set the address book contact to prefer to receive Plain Text, then they should get Plain Text.
You can select to 'compose messages in HTML' in the Account Settings as stated above, but you can swap to Plain Text for a specific email by holding down 'Shift' key and clicking on 'Write' button.
Providing the settings (see 2 above) are set to actually ''send'' in both html and Plain text, you could send this to yourself and receive a plain text message no matter what the settings under 'View' > 'Message body As'.

  • Photoshop CS5 Users - Performance Checks Wanted From You

A few days ago, while discussing various system configurations in answer to posts asking about what's best in new computers, it occurred to me that while we all know our own computers pretty well, it's practically impossible, without a whole bunch of different systems to work with on hand, to judge what system works best with Photoshop.  Is more cores better?  A superduper video card?  Huge RAM?
    Got a few minutes?
I propose we try a few "real world" things with Photoshop CS5 on our systems and report how quickly/interactively it does them, as well as our system configurations, in an attempt to understand what works best.  This isn't a "one upsmanship" contest, but just a poll to see what systems really blaze through Photoshop work.
Let's try to keep the list of "some things" fairly small, so we can all easily try them.  And the timing isn't too critical... Use a stopwatch if you can, or just watch the second hand on your watch or a clock and guestimate the timing to the nearest second.
List these things about your system:
    A. Your architecture (PC / Mac) and what OS you're running.
    B.  Number of processors / processor models / GHz speed.
    C.  RAM size, speed.
    D.  Hard drives (OS, Photo storage, Photoshop scratch), their sizes and speeds.
    E.  Video card (model, graphics memory on board).
    F.  Your Photoshop Preferences settings - Amount of RAM you've allotted Photoshop, whether you have OpenGL enabled, scratch disk allocations.
Here are the things I think might be useful for multiple people to try and let us know the time it takes:
    1.  Cold start Photoshop, from where it is not running.  How long does this take from start to everything on the screen painted and ready to work?  Do it several times.  If you use both the 32 bit version and the 64 bit version, see if there's a difference in startup time for each.  This test represents how long you'll have to wait when inspiration hits you and before you can start working.
    2. Create a big, new RGB image, 10000 x 8000 pixels in size, 16 bits/channel.  Time how long it takes to File - Save As a .PSD in the location you often save files.  Make sure you're set for Maximum Compatibility for saving PSDs.  This gives your disk subsystem a bit of a workout.
    3. Choose a round brush, set the Hardness to 0% (i.e., as fuzzy as possible), Spacing down to 10%, disable all the dynamics, and set the foreground color to something other than the background color of your image so you can see your strokes.  How do brush strokes on your screen keep up with you interactively under each of the following conditions?  If not, how long does it seem to take to catch up to where you just painted?  Does it follow everywhere you moved your mouse, or at some point start to skip places where your mouse went if you paint quickly?
    3a. Brush Size 100px.
    3b. Brush Size 200px.
    3c. Brush Size 300px.
    3d. Brush Size 400px.
    3e. Brush Size 600px.
    3f. Brush Size 1000px.
3g. How big does the Brush Size have to be at 10% spacing and 0% hardness before it gets too laggy to be practically useful without slowing your strokes down hugely.
    4.  Filter - Blur - Lens Blur.  Change all the controls to 0 then the Radius to 20 pixels and time how long it takes to fill the preview with the image (all checkerboard gone).  You can cancel the Blur filter after the display is filled.  This is a single-threaded plug-in.
    5.  How long does it take to complete an Unsharp Mask on the image you've painted, using a setting of 250% amount, 250.0 pixel radius, 0 levels?  Time how long it takes after hitting the OK button to Photoshop being ready for you to do something else.  This is a multi-threaded plug-in.
You can go ahead and close the above image after the Unsharp Mask operation.
    6. How long does it take to convert a Canon EOS 7D and a Nikon D7000 image with default settings, between hitting the [Open] button in Camera Raw and the image appearing in Photoshop to be ready to edit?  You can find raw files online to try with.  This is where I got the ones I tried:
    http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E7D/E7DFARI00100.CR2.HTM
    http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D7000/D7000FARI00100.NEF.HTM
Please don't be shy about posting your results.
Your computer is what it is and there's NOTHING to be ashamed of.  Some are going to be faster than others at different things, and I think it will be really enlightening to see how the different system architectures handle these operations.  It can be a more or less objective way to see what architectures really do give great Photoshop performance.  Then when people ask "what's the best architecture" to get to run Photoshop, we can respond with more confidence and point them to this thread.
I'll post my own results in a bit.
    Thanks!

Here's my system in a nutshell:
    A.  Dell Precision T5400 PC Workstation running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.  I have two 1600 x 1200 pixel Dell 2001FP display monitors.
    B.  2 Intel Xeon X5460 3.16 GHz processors with 12M cache and 4 cores each (8 cores total in the system).
    C.  16 GB of 1333 MHz DDR2 RAM in 8 x 2 GB DIMMs, which provides quad channel access.
    D.  Drive C: is 2 x 1 TB Western Digital RE4 SATA drives in RAID 0, Drive D: is a Hitachi 1 TB SATA drive.  All are 7200 RPM, and using SATA2 connections.
    E.  Video card is ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 1 GB GDDR5 memory, running the ATI Catalyst 11.12 driver.
    F.  Photoshop 32 bit set to use 100% RAM (3255 MB), OpenGL disabled.  Photoshop 64 bit limited at 95% RAM (13962 MB), OpenGL enabled, Normal mode.
    Here are my test results:
    1.  Photoshop 32 bit took 10 seconds initially to come up, then after closing it it took between 4 and 5 seconds to come up on subsequent cold starts.
Photoshop 64 bit took 6 seconds to come up at first, then after closing it it took about 3 seconds to come up on subsequent cold starts.
    2.  File - Save As - PSD an 80 megapixel 16 bits/channel image took 2 seconds.  File was 468 MB on disk.  Timing was the same in both 32 and 64 bit Photoshop.
    3.  Painting interactivity with various brushes was good up to the larger sizes, where it started to get laggy:
    Photoshop CS5 32 bit:
3a-d: Brush strokes are perfectly Interactive at 100px through 400px with any speed strokes.
3e: Started to notice a slight delay at 600px. Stroke across entire image follows the cursor cleanly, but a small fraction of a second later.
3f. Delay noticeably longer at 1000px, probably 1/3 to 1/2 second. Quick curvy strokes result in loss of some of the positions the mouse traversed, the resultant stroke becoming straight between points.  Still quite usable for painting if the mouse is moved a little bit more slowly.
3g. At 2500px the brush paints in noticeable jumps, a small fraction of a second apart. Somewhat usable but the mouse would have to be moved extremely slowly.  Practically unusable for painting.
Photoshop CS5 64 bit (slightly poorer performance than in 32 bit Photoshop, perhaps because of OpenGL setting difference):
3a-c: Brush strokes perfectly Interactive at 100px through 300px.
3d: Started to notice a slight delay noticed at 400px. Stroke on screen follows the cursor cleanly, but a small fraction of a second later.
3e. Delay noticeably longer at 600px, probably 1/3 to 1/2 second. Quick curvy strokes lose some of the positions the mouse traversed, becoming vectored.  Possibly usable for painting but only if the mouse is moved very slowly.
3f. A quick stroke across the image at 1000px size results in it taking 1 second or more to catch up.  Probably unusable for any kind of painting.
3g. At 2500px the brush paints in noticeable jumps, about 1/4 second apart. Possibly usable for spot retouching but the mouse would have to be just single-clicked.  Completely unusable for painting.
    4.  Lens Blur, with More Accurate setting and 20 px Radius, took the following times to fill the preview display of the filter, and (per Task Manager) appeared to be using only one core:
    32 Bit Photoshop:  2 minutes 5 seconds (125 seconds).
    64 Bit Photoshop:  1 minute 20 seconds (80 seconds).
    5.  Filter - Sharpen - Unsharp Mask, with 250% Amount and 250.0 px Radius took the following times to complete after pressing OK:
    32 Bit Photoshop: 9 seconds.
    64 Bit Photoshop:  12 seconds.
    6.  Opening raw images took the following times:
    32 Bit Photoshop: Canon 7D Image: 3.8 seconds  ;  Nikon D7000 Image: 1.4 seconds
    64 Bit Photoshop: Canon 7D Image: 2.5 seconds  ;  Nikon D7000 Image: 1.5 seconds
Looking forward to seeing your results.

  • I get Black Eye instead of removing the RED EYE.

The old "red eye" system was sooo simple & easy to use. I am probably doing something stupid. On auto it seems to do nothing. Manual makes the eyes black, bad enough BUT if the spot is to big I get a big black eye. It seems the system is designed to cover up the red with black instead of removing the RED. Can this be true. I hope not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Warren

    Warren:
No, you're not doing anything wrong. There are types of redeye that iPhoto just doesn't handle well at all. When there's a lot of yellow or orange in the color it just doesn't work as intended. The manual way also just puts a black disk over the eye.
Try using the redeye tool in manual and then apply the Retouch tool, sized to the black circle, to the the black area with one click. That can soften the effect a bit.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why is AE creating unwanted keyframes whenever i change a property?

    Hi all...
Just hoping someone can maybe shed some light on this - every time i go to change a property of a layer, AE (CS5.5) creates a keyframe which i don't want, even though i haven't clicked the stopwatch button.  Any thoughts?  Is this happening to anyone else?
Example: I have a comp containing a PNG sequence on a layer above some video footage.  I want to move the comp over to the right a ways, so i select the layer, and move it to the right.  Suddenly the stopwatch icon activates (without me clicking it) and a keyframe appears on the layer's timeline where the playhead is.  Very befuddling, and quite irritating - if i miss one, forget to delete the key and then later try to animate the layer, it messes up the animation and i have to go hunting for the rogue key.
Anyways, hopefully someone out there has an idea of what's going wrong, and even more hopefully, how to fix it.  I have a horrible suspicion it's some setting that i've accidentally changed...
    Thanks all!
    p.

    Hi everyone.
Scratch the above - just spotted the massive big red "auto-keyframe properties when modified" button at the top of the timeline.  D'oh!
    Thanks all,
    p.

  • Consistent, long-standing performance issues -- seeking advice

I have a performance problem with my system. It's a problem that's lasted me years, spanning 3 different computers. This leads me to believe it's not the hardware, but something about my system. As I've moved from computer to computer (as well as when I've reinstalled the system), I've taken pains to skip the Migration Assistant and move over preferences and Application Support one by one, in an attempt to isolate and remove the bug. This always appears to work for a while, then inevitably it goes back to it's same, unresponsive, jittery, occasionally slow self. I'm considering getting a new computer, and I want to try to isolate this problem before I go through the process again.
Here is a list of symptoms. Scroll to the end to read what I've tried to do to fix it.
    DISAPPEARING FINDER
Once in a while, when waking from sleep, the icons on the Finder disappear. The Finder is be usable, and I can create Finder windows, but the icons aren't there. Fixed by force-restarting the Finder.
    MESSY ICON
OIAW, when waking from sleep, the mouse arrow will be replaced with what appears to be random lines and static. Easily fixed by hovering over a text box and forcing a cursor change.
    SAFARI BEACHBALL
I know Safari can be slow as a matter of course, but sometimes mine just GRINDS. I have to either force-quit it or leave it for a while for it to catch it's breath. Some common triggers are Flash embeds (no surprise), big pages, or pages with big photos. Almost always, a page with a lot of photos (like Big Picture), will be impossible to scroll smoothly.
    GARBLED MENUBAR
Occasionally, I'll look up to the menu bar to find it a garbled mess. It appears as if the menus from more than one application are overlain on top of each other. The bar is still useable, and if I click on any menu, it redraws itself properly.
    MOBILE ME IS A ************
This is probably the biggest, most consistent, easiest to replicate problem. When Mobile Me is syncing, I might as well not even try to use the computer. It seems to gobble up all memory, making everything else practically useless. I have it set to sync automatically, but I'm pretty sure I've tried hourly and daily and the same problem occurs. (Also, FWIW, I think it's syncing a lot more than it needs to -- not a lot changes from sync to sync. But I'm not sure how to prove this.)
    SLOW DOCK
If it hasn't been in use for a while, the dock will take a second or two to show (it's positioned on the bottom, hidden).
    FONT CORRUPTION
This hasn't been happening much lately, but for a while, particular base system fonts would suddenly stop working. The files were still there, and active in FontBook, but they wouldn't work in applications. I would have to remove the file from the System/Library/Fonts folder, then the system would recreate it, and it would work again. This would sometimes happen out of the blue.
The one consistently corrupt program in this respect is Google Chrome. It's never been usable -- all characters within the window frame are the weird box with a serif A in the middle. (Strangely, the text in the chrome itself -- bookmark text, tab text, etc -- works fine.
    ITUNES STUTTER
Sometimes the computer is so consumed with whatever it's doing that iTunes will stutter.
    DOCK STUTTER BOUNCE
Often when opening an app, the dock icon doesn't bounce smoothly, but rather stutters up and down.
    TRANSPARENT MENUBAR
Sometimes the background of the menubar disappears. Weirdly, the shadow remains.
    SLOW DASHBOARD
Even after the Dashboard has been loaded for the first time, it can be grindingly slow. It usually zooms into place okay, but activating an module and using it can take 10-20 seconds.
    SLOW SCROLLING
Sometimes, very rarely, the whole computer will have a scrolling seizure -- scrolling a window will become VERY unresponsive, and very stuttery when it finally does respond. Happens to all apps, and quitting the app doesn't appear to fix it. Only restarting (or logging out and in).
    COVERFLOW
Like other things, can be jumpy.
    IN SUMMARY, **** IS SLOW
Basically, sometimes everything just slows. Even the simplest thing is impossible to do, like opening a menu, or finder window, or typing -- it'll stutter and spits out my letters in big chunks.
    *--- THINGS I'VE TRIED ---*
I've added more RAM. When I went from 2GB to 3GB, things appeared to be fast again. That lasted a few days. Later, I went from 3GB to 4GB, with no noticeable change.
I've cleared out my fonts. I deactivated all fonts in FontExplorer except for a couple dozen essentials.
I've verified all fonts in FontBook and removed the offending ones. I fixed any conflicts in FontExplorer.
I've cleared the cache any number of ways, including with Cocktail. Cocktail offers a variety of configurations for cache clearing, and I've tried a bunch of them.
After doing all the above for the first time, I actually thought I had cleared out whatever ugliness was invading my system. Things were opening snappily, and Flash movies were playing smoothly. That lasted a day, and things went back to normal. I've tried it again several times since, and while I've seen some mild improvement, it's been nothing like that one miraculous time.
    *--- WHAT NEXT? ---*
I've seen Apple Store Geniuses about this a few times. It's been very frustrating. What it usually comes down to is: reinstall your system. I did it the first time they suggested it, and the problem always came back. I'm not going to do it again, because it's a major hassle, and obviously doesn't fix the problem.
The other thing they say to do is look at Activity Monitor. I have done that, but I'm not totally clear what to with the information I see, other than to quit more apps to free more memory. Here's the thing: I'm seeing no discernible difference in free memory between a 3GB system and 4GB system. Same slowness, same sliver of free memory in the pie chart.
I've done a lot of looking around online, including in this forum, and the one thing I read consistently is that you want to avoid pageouts. I look at my Activity Monitor and see gigs and gigs of pageouts. What I can't find is tips on how to reduce them.
I've been living with this for a while, because it's just on the threshold of tolerable. It comes in waves, and the times of easygoing make it easy to forget the annoying times. But I'd like to fix it at its root. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
    *--- SCREENSHOTS ---*
    - The garbled menubar
    - An example of very active Activity Monitor with 3GB
    - And one with 4GB
    Thanks!

Erase the hard drive, install 10.6 from scratch, download and install the 10.6.3 vers. 1.1 Combo Updater, then allow Software Update to download and install any other additional software.
Do not yet reinstall any third-party software but take some time to test out everything, In this way you will be able to better now if some problems remain which may be indicative of hardware malfunction.
Since you say these problems have been long standings, I'm surprised you didn't downgrade to Leopard or take the computer in for repair. Letting problems go without solution tends to cause new problems and/or exacerbate existing ones.

  • Photoshop CS4 running slow on MAC OS X

I bought myself a MAC OS X recently with a student edition of Photoshop CS4, i am currently studying photography and have been told many times that a mac would be the best option to edit images- this coupled with Photoshop CS4. However since loading the program onto my MAC i have had nothing but stress it is being extremely slow.
For example when i start to add layers to my work it immediately slows down, esp when i start adding effects to any of the layers such as 'surface blur', the 'elliptical tool' is also slow as when i create a shape i see nothing come up on the actual image... For me to actually be able to see what i am doing i usually have to toggle between the icons on the tool bar on the side. Another slow feature is the cropping tool, when i want to move the crop the slightest bit by using the arrows on my keyboard the shape doesnt follow where its meant to go. What i have also noticed is that the 'preview' image doesn't apply on the image im working on, usually when an effect such as a blur is applied it shows what it would look like on the image before you click ok. At least this is my experience with Photoshop CS2 and a PC. This is all happening with just one image open, so you can imagine what it is like when i open multiple images... I will admit my images are large in size, but surely photoshop should be able to handle this? The macs in my university are able to handle this AND more (adding multiple layers and images on-top of each other) and they also use CS4.
I have troubleshooted it to death, even rung the store where i bought the program and MAC from and they have updated all the features on the mac and photoshop and this has not helped. Ive even checked if it could be the video card, my mac currently has the- ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. I believe this to be the most recent and up to date card however i haven't ruled it out as the source of the problem.  The ram has also been doubled and is now 4GB.
One thing i do notice is that at FIRST everything seems fine, and then when i really start to get into editing an image it slows down hugely and starts to show the problems mentioned before. I have just rung the MAC support line and they advised me to open a new account on the mac and load photoshop onto there to see if its any of the settings on my particular account, again everything seemed fine at first- but then it fell back into its bad habits of being slow.
Any help or suggestions would be great as this is really getting me down, im a university student studying photography for my degree and i really want this resolved before i go back and start taking more photos.

The web psd files may be 100mb... not the actual files on a web site. 100mb files on the web would be silly All the actual final web images are almost always under 200k at the very most, more often ~50k max.
I do several different types of projects -- web development, print production, direct mail, advertising, illustration (mostly vector in AI though), and photography retouching. My working files always hit 100MB easy.. in print production or illustration is very easy to hit 700MB - 1GB with a file if not more. Final production files are rarely that large... But I retain all working files as well for easy editing in the future. Photography retouching doesn't often create such large files. That's not to say they can't... but it's just more rare with retouching since most of the work is spot retouching or overall tonal shifts.
File size is also greatly effected by how you work. The more non-destructive methods you use, the greater the file size can get. If you flatten layers file sizes are reduced. I don't ever flatten any layer if it can be avoided.
Forget OWC.. they're great but not the best for RAM.. 18004memory.com has the same ram.. the same warranty.. at better prices. 4x4GB sticks = $396 for 667mhz RAM and $463 for 800mhz both with free shipping. I've got 16GB of RAM in my MacPro from 18004memory and have been wonderfully happy for over a year with it. When I loaded my machine prices were easily triple those. But then.. the economy was much better then too.

  • Router "ignores" iMac network traffic after a short while...

someone here might be able to help.  Here are my symptoms:
My home network consists of Comcast broadband connected to an SMC 802.11N broadband router, which then feeds into several switches and several other wireless access points in my house to support the various dead spots (3 levels, big enough that I put in more AP's over the years.)
I work in IT for a living.  All APs are on separate channels, and I use iStumbler to make sure I am not being stepped on by my neighbors.  I also use a radio frequency analyzer to watch for spurious emissions from cordless phones, etc.  In any event, I do not believe this is a WIRELESS issue as you will see in a moment.
What happens is that I can get my new iMac onto my network and online with no problem...I can do this by connecting to the main SMC router wirelessly, or by connecting wirelessly to any of the other APs in the house.  I get great connection speeds (20+MBit as reported by Speedtest.net) and can surf just fine...for a while.
What happens is that my SMC router eventually starts to "ignore" my iMac.  What I mean is that I can turn on a network sniffer and watch the communications between the iMac and the router working just fine...then all of a sudden the SMC router starts to ignore ARP requests from the iMac.  Since this main router is my gateway on the network, this means that the iMac can longer get out to the Internet.  BUT, I can still reach other local resources on my local network via the other AP's just fine.  For example, I have SMB shares on other machines on the network and if the iMac has already grabbed the MAC address for these local machines, when the router begins to ignore my iMac it can still talk to local machines just fine.  The router just 100% ignores the iMac now (pings, logins to the web admin console, ARP requests, etc).
I can recover by dropping the wireless connection from my iMac to the non-router AP and RECONNECTING to the router's built in access point.  This is obviously not a sustainable work-around however.  I can also restart the router and recover.
I thought that perhaps the register on my router was being over-run with traffic from my iMac and read that something like DropBox may do this.  I AM running DropBox on all my machines so removed it from my iMac...no luck.  My SMC router starts to ignore my iMac after 10 minutes or so of surfing even with no DropBox app running on my iMac.
There are no errors in the SMC's logs that would indicate a problem, and none of my Windows/Linux machines are having any issues with this SMC router.
Having said all that...I anticipate that the first response to this post might be, "it's your router's issue...replace that and all is well."  But I am struggling with the fact that 7+ other machines on my home network (ranging from variations of Linux to Windows 7 to Windows HomeServer) all interact with this SMC router all day long...it only starts ignoring my shiny new iMac after 10-15 minutes.
I also have not tried to reproduce this by connecting directly to the SMC router (main gateway) to see if it happens.  Again, I am going iMac -> Wireless Access Point -> Switch -> SMC router so not sure why this would matter or not when trying to determine why the SMC router and iMac refuse to communicate after a short while (and I need to use my new iMac wirelessly anyway).
    any suggestions?
    Thanks!

we are having the exact same symptoms where our apple products are connected, but can't access the internet.  we have the same router from Comcast.  it is an SMCWBR14S-N4.
we have an iphone4 and ipad2.  used to think it was something weird about the iphone, which we've had for months, and we've had this problem for months.  just got the ipad last week, and it immediately started showing the same symptoms.
like you, we have other computers, and they don't have these issues.  we also have a panasonic viera flat screen with a 802.11n dongle.  none of these machines have an issue.
any luck getting your problem solved?

    dr clrg 250
    dr accum 800
    cr interco gain 50
    In receiving company code B
    dr apc 1000
    dr asset 50
    cr contra 800
    cr clg 250
I am unable to do this with transfer method 3, which is new value method. I tried creating new trnsfr variants and TTys but unable to get the above postings.
Please suggest suitable combination of trnsf methods and TTys asap!!!
    Thanks

    Hi,
    >Can someone tell me why my post doesn't show up as I typed it? All of the carriage returns were removed so that its one big >paragraph (that is impossible to read).
Because your post  is too long.
Because the performance of the java forum software is very bad, the forum admins had to disable the paragraph formatting of "long" messages  to keep "acceptable" response times.
This is such a good advertising for Jive software and the j2ee engine...
