Mail App Not Opening After Upgrading to Yosemite
I upgraded to Yosemite this morning from Mountain Lion. Everything seemed to go well until I clicked Mail for the first time. The migration process started, but the app never opened and will not open. I immediately get a crash dialog and that's it. I click reopen and get the dialog box saying, "The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows." I can do this over and over again. I've read the other threads, but they are not helping me.
This is the log created after it attempts to open:

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Apps not opening after 4.2 update
I performed the 4.2 update. It took about an hour and a half for it to go through. Everything was functional after the update. I turned my iPod Touch off last night after recharging. I turned it on this morning and none of my apps are opening. They are there, but none of them will load. Did anyone else have this issue? If so, were you able to reslove this? Also, can you give me the steps you did to get your iPod Touch apps back functional? This is the main reason I stopped doing the updates because I always had issues afterward. Please note, my last update was for 3.0.
If resetting fix it you are done.
If not then restore from backup
If still problems, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
- Resetting does not delete items.
- Restoring from backup will leave you iPod like it was when the backup was made provided all your music and apps are in your iTunes library since music and songs are not in the backup but are synced to the iPod.
- Restoring to factory defaults/new iPod means it is like an new iPod and you will have to add (sync) stuff to the iPod. -

Mail Application will not open after 10.6.8 update
So, I'm currently trying to update my parent's computer and in the process of updating their Mail application it has become unusable. My computer at home (not my parents computer) ran into the same problem before I updated to Lion and deleting the preferences for Mail solved it. Plus, I have read previous posts about this similar problem and a typical troubleshooting solution was to delete the Mail preferences.
After all of my software updates (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and deleting the preferences for Mail, I still receive the same error message when trying to open the application. "Mail can't be used on this version of mac OS X. Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications foler on your computer." My applications folder has not been adjusted, edited or even touched from it's original state in the dock/home folder.
I contacted AppleCare support and they advised me to reformat my computer. I think that's a little... unneccesary?? It's just Mail that isn't working. The rest of the applications (e.g. Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, etc.) open just fine.
Anyway, do you have any advice or insight to my problem here?
Much appreciated! Thanks! After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before. Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded. It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly. And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail? A startup disk is not accessible for me right now. Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website? -
Disk Utility will not open after 10.5.5 update..
I'm unable to open disk utility, ive tried booting in safe mode and after restarts aswell, and the icon bounces and then quits. Pretty annoying, as i have the ichat video issue aswell and i need to repair permissions in order to fix this and I cant. I know i could boot disk utility off the install cd aswell, but that doesnt fix the problem of the app on my HD not opening..?
Any help please..Hi, I would d/load the update again...maybe call AC'' ...L

Address Book will not open after 10.3.9 update (plus others)
I've seen some close postings on this but not exactly:
Doing maintainance on someone's iBook 900 mhz, 640 RAM, and did a boatload of updates after running Main Menu Batch scripts. I tested all apps afterwards and Address Book turned from normal to generic icon when I tried to open it.
Here's a few items:
Ran several tests, permissions, reinstalled Combo update to no avail
Address Book does open within Email app
Not Font Book issue
Address Book says size is 561K(?) in Info, and has only one address in it
Tried and failed moving preference plist file out
I'm not sure if this was working before I ran updates, but assume the mass of updates hosed it.
Thanks in advance if you have any insights. Would like to return it in close to working order.
DHSVerify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, use Pacifist to reinstall Address Book from the Panther installation disks.
Finally, if the version of the system software on your installation disks is earlier than what you're using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you're using, to bring the Address Book application back in sync with the rest of the system:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed. -
Kindle Reading App not working after 10.9.5 update
After update to 10.9.5 Kindle reading app is not opening. Anyone else having this problem?
Even uninstall/install wont work.Just saw that it was able changing the location of your store even without providing CC information.
Now that I'm on US I downloaded with success the kindle app and it work normally.
Thanks. -
I would appreciate it if someone could please help. I updated my computer with 10.4.11 and now Safari will not open. I see that many have the same problem and different solutions seem to have helped. I have tried a few but none have worked for me. I have been waiting for Apple to create an update solution to no avail. I feel like I am using Microsoft! I have Safari Enhancer in my Applications. I tried putting that in the trash and opening Safari but it did not help. I am not very tech savvy so if someone could check my error report and offer a detailed solution it would be incredible.
Thanks,
Castel

Welcome to Apple Discussions
I have Safari Enhancer in my Applications. I tried putting that in the trash and opening Safari but it did not help.
Safari Enhancer modifies Safari. If you used in with Safari 2, then there's a good chance some mix-up occurred as the 10.4.11 installer updated Safari from version 2 to 3. Any time you modify an application with a 3rd party item, you are running the risk of problems occurring. Fortunately, there exists a rather straight forward way to make things right.
Have a look at this MacFixit article, which offers suggestions for reinstalling Safari 3. If you have difficulty following these suggested steps, visit an Apple store>Genius Bar if a store is nearby. Someone there will help you reinstall Safari 3.

Apps not working after 2.0.1 update
After installing the new update when I try to use any of the apps I downloaded they open for a second and then close right away and return back to the app screen. Is this because of the update? anybody else experiencing this?
Hi,
I had the same problem, solved 'buying' a free app from AppStore directly from the iPhone, via wifi.
Hope this helps... -
Safari will not open after Oct 14 software update
I updated software on Oct 14th & then shut off my computer for the night. Woke up this morning & Safari will not open. The icon on my dock bounces a few time & then that's it. What should I do?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Apps not opening after updating to 5.0.1.
After updating to 5.0.1, I cannot open almost all my apps!!! What do you suggest I do?
While on the Home screen double press the HOME button to open the Recently Used ribbon across the bottom of the screen. Hold a finger on any app until a "-" appears on all the apps, then tap the "-" on each to close it and free its memory.
If this does not resolve the problem go to the App Store and "purchase" any free app. -
Apps not opening after accidental disconnect
Hello,
Hoping someone can help.
I haven't connected my ipad 1 to itunes in a couple of years because i lost the original copy and didn't want to go through the hassle of losing my stuff.
Anyway, foolishly, i connected my ipad today while itunes was open and it started to sync. Not knowing what to do i unplugged it after no more than a couple of seconds.
Now any app i try to open that isn't an apple original, i.e. goodreader, icab mobile, just flashes briefly and goes back to the homescreen. it doesn't open at all.
I feared that in those two seconds all my data got wiped but in my settings screen it shows i'm still up at the limit of my available storage gigs, so it seems the data's still there. Also i didn't lose my photos or music collection and the itunes i connected to was empty.
Safari and the other originals still work, i've tried a hard reboot and reset but no luck.
Can anyone help please? I'd hate to lose three years of audio and research.
Thank you. This problem has resolved itself with time after rebooting.
I can't see how to delete or edit my post so apologies for clogging up the forum.
Thank you -
Apps not opening after installing iOS4
Hi,
I installed the new software update on my iPhone 3G. Now all the downloaded apps won't open.I don't understand what's going on with the apps on my iPod touch when I try to open them they close afet a few seconds never actually getting to the app. This happened only after installing the new software. This happened with all my aps even after I uninstalled and reinstalled them they still would not work. If someone could please figure out what's wrong that would be great as of now I have never been more frustrated with apple and iPods. This iPod is a few months old and I only got it because my other nano I had mysteriously stopped working!!!! Not to mention my iTunes won't work and has had an error code pop up evrytime I try something!

Why does my iPhoto app not open after upgrading to 10.8.2?
I keep getting a popup that says the application is busy or the files are unreadable. When I hold down the option and command keys while opening, I get a popup that asks me to check what I want to repair, but when I check on one, the other popup appears again, the app is in use or the files are unreadable. I can drag photos from my pictures file to the app, but it won't receive them because, "the app is in use or the files are unreadable. What can I do to make iPhoto functional?
Same with my 2011 Imac -- i was actually trying to use ethernet connection to update to 10.8.2 to see if i that gets rid of the wifi drop outs @!! Hillarious if it wasnt so frekin frustrating, I am renting a wireless 4g dongle for the month as its the only internet access my Imac will handle until Apple gives us our connectivity back --- i heard they really don't pay attention to these forums, so may be longer than a month !

I have a new iMac that hangs at Create a Computer Account screen. Taking forever.
