Spotify UI needs to be more condensed, not more like iTunes

I would like the search results to show up as in the old UI-design. The new UI-design is horrible, beside the point that Spotify is starting to look more and more like iTunes for no good reason. It all comes down to wasted screen real estate. First of all the new search is wasting space on the sides while simultaneously truncating Artist name and album name. The new search also wastes roughly half of my screen before the search results come. This leads to unnecessary scrolling and I am using an 1920x1200 display!, this must be even more irritating on smaller resolution displays.I have outlined my thoughts in picture1 and picture2 So I guess my idea is that Spotify needs to think in terms of screen real estate. The primary goal needs to be to present as much information as possible in one screen. The old UI did a perfect job for this. There where clear lists and still album art to see what was going on. It also had its own distinct look and feel it felt genuine in some seance. Copying the look and feel of iTunes feels second class somehow, like Spotify desperately tries to be something else. But there is so much other aspects the needs to be fixed with Spotify then the look and feel of its UI.

I have to chime in on this one too. I'm a long time Spotify user and a graphic designer. The design was great before the recent update. There is so much wasted space now. One tthing I miss is the little blurb at the top of the page in Artist view that gave several lines  of the intro to the artist Biography.  Now I have to click on the full Biography link to read anything. While this might not seem like a big deal, having that blurb was really convenient and attention grabbing.  Now I have less of a desire to click the Biography link. Another grievance is the Top Tracks section of the Artist page. While it's great that they increased it from 5 to 10, the new mini album icons take up so much room! Plus I loved being able to star a track right from the Top Tracks list withouth having to hunt for it in the Albums list. Sure, the little icons help find the album quickly, but it's still annoying to scroll and hunt.  And what's with the side by side crap? Now I can't click on the top track and shift+click down through the next album to select all the songs, it skips the 9 other tracks. That should be fixed. And of course, color! This might sound like nitpicking, but it really makes a big deal. So many people spend hours on end on their computer each day. For those who have to stare at a screen for a long time, a bright interface is a bad idea.  Sure, it looks pretty, but that's not what it should be about. I want to hear music, and I want a power, intuitive tool to get the job done. If the color and design are going to bug people, guess what? People aren't going to interact with your product as much. They're going to do what I do now, set a long playlist, minimize the window, and forget about all the extra goodies you've worked so hard to pack into your software. Spotify's color and layout was spot on before. If you want to mess with the color, cool. But could we have some options to change it from the preferences pane without having to download and install add ons or skins? (wow that was long, sorry. there's my two cents)

  • Need to restore but iPod not recognized in iTunes

I have the black iPod Classic 80GB for over two years and now it's getting some problems:
First, after it synced it would automatically eject, then go into "ejected charging mode" if I left it plugged in. I thought nothing of this, really.
Second, when plugged in the iPod screen goes to the one where it says, "Connected: Eject before disconnecting," but does not appear in my iTunes or in My Computer under my iPod's name and its drive.
I unplugged and rebooted my iPod since it froze, then plugged it back in, but it just did some cycle of the "Connected", "Ejecting", and "OK to disconnect" screens, but it never disconnected, but instead went back to "Connected", then repeats.
Now I plugged it in again and iTunes says it can't play the files on it, so I have to restore it. Problem is, it doesn't show up in my iTunes at all! However, it shows up in My Computer.
    Help please?

If you're under warranty, exchange it! I did this today after appt at store, delted all apps and reloaded, with the same result. Technician informed me that Classics (I have 120GB) have a firmware issue that cannot be updated externally, so they exchange them with a new one.

  • Genre of imported songs not localised like iTunes songs

The genres of songs that I purchase in iTunes are in Dutch, because I'm Dutch and therefore the language of my iTunes Store is also Dutch. If I import songs from a CD, however, the genres are in English. The result is that most of the genres are present twice, once in Dutch and once in English. I know how to change the genre of songs, but it's getting rather tedious to clean up my genres every time I import something.
Is there a way to get the genres in Dutch when importing CD titles? Is this a CDDB issue, an iTunes issue or a OS X localisation issue?
    Regards,
    -Eric

I ran into the same problem, I think that, If you tab on a song that is on your IPOD, and the song data is grayed-out, I think it means that the song is probably twice on your IPOD and that the iTunes directory can not edit THAT song data for two (or more) files @once. Check if this is the case, sinceI have the same problem,am looking for a way to have One and the same song in more playlists but only keep the song once on the IPOD.

  • Ipod 160Go not recognized by itunes or even pc

    Hi,
I bought an ipod 160Go in October 2009.
However I currently have a big problem with it : a few days ago, while my ipod was plugged Windows began to make the sound like if an USB device was keeping being plugged/unplugged. After a quick check I finally understood it was because of the ipod. Indeed it was keeping connecting/disconnecting without any action of my own. I immediately unplugged it, and by seeking on these boards I saw that it was advised to reset it. I did it, and it worked well. However the real problem arrived : my ipod isn't recognized by my pc any more. Not even by itunes. Even by Windows. Nothing happens when I plug it, except that the screen lights itself (like if I was touching the wheel), and I can still use the ipod while the cable is plugged.
Everything was up-to-date. I reset it, tried to put in in Disk mode, I reinstalled itunes... Nothing worked so far.
Thanks for any help! And for having read this far. Sorry if my English sounds broken, it isn't my mother language. However do not hesitate to point out obvious mistakes!
PS: I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not, so I put this here : last week I had a surprise when I plugged it : itunes said it was needed to be restore in order to work. It was the first time it ever happened to me, and everything was working fine before, but well, if itunes said it, it must be true! It worked perfectly fine, until the problem mentioned above.

    I figured this out.
I needed a charge and sync cable in order for the iPod to be reconized by any USB port on the computer.

It was not legitimately unlocked by the carrier it was originally locked to. ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it.
In order to allow it to be used on a different carrier, the phone was hacked or jailbroken. An unauthorized modification was made to the phone. That modification has damaged the phone. You can not get support for it here or from Apple.

I have my catalog "Back Up Each Time Lightroom Exits" checked, and always have. That means the catalog should have been backed-up and saved everyday, if not more than once on some dates. So with a a major problem now and needing to use the Catalog backup from last Friday, I go to my Lightroom Backups folder - and the most recent one showing not only isn't yesterday, it's OCTOBER 28 !?? Where the hell are the daily backups between October 28 and November 14?

Oh wow - JET LAG strikes agin - my apologies; I have located the missing weeks of back-ups. After getting home from a 30-day trip to Europe, I had changed the location of my LR catalog back-ups to an external drive, and forgot that I did that. I have found them, and all is good. Never operate Heavy Machinery without enough rest. Cheers

  • Replacement Needed. This iphone is not able to complete the activation process and needs to be replaced. Please visit your nearest apple store or authorized service center.

Probably will never ever think of buying a locked phone from AT&T cause its one of the worst system integrations ever that these companies could think of.
The entire problem started when I put in a request with at&t to unlock my iphone 4s (ios7) which did get approved. I performed the entire instructions they asked me to do, which is to backup and restore. After doing those instructions my iphone gave me an error message below
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
The SIM card that you currently installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.
Basically saying that at&t hasn't still unlocked the iphone which a really helpful apple executive was able to confirm. I initiated another unlock process from at&t in order to unlock the iphone, just to be sure that its not something wrong from my end. The nice at&t lady stayed on chat with me to unlock the iphone step my step while I was calling the apple tech too. And the apple tech confirmed again that the iphone is locked to at&t.
Now, just a few minutes ago I tried another restore to see if any progress is being made and to my surprise I got an error message saying
Replacement Needed. This iphone is not able to complete the activation process and needs to be replaced. Please visit your nearest apple store or authorized service center.
I feel like I am just going around these two different "money hogger" companies which set certain rules and regulations to screw a regular phone buyer. I purchased this iphone in USA and trying to unlock in India, is it really this hard to simply unlock a device.
For now I am going to try to call a apple office in india (apprently we don't have very many out here) and see if they can help me. But any other assistance regarding unlocking an iphone 4s would be helpful. I have however, tried checking IMEI.info, called up apple, talked to at&t (which always say go talk to apple) I do have a case number from apple as well in case an apple executive reads this discussion forum (case number: 566383594)
    Thanks

You got a confirmation from AT&T that it was authorized. Is this correct? - Yes i did get an email authorization on the 21st.
Then you connected the phone to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. You clicked on the phone's name in iTunes, then clicked "Backup Now". - Yes
When that finished you clicked "Restore iPhone" (NOT "Restore Backup") - Yes
Are you with me so far? - Yes.
And @ Varjak is right that after the 3rd restore I get the replacement error.
Plus I have NEVER jailbroken the iPhone. To give you another update, I spoke to a really nice apple tech in India who was atleast able to get me out of the replacement error by doing a recovery mode option. However, the lastest restore still gives me the same error

See a a version compable with your iPod is available:
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
Also, if you have iOS 6.1.6 yo have a 4G (has cameras). A 3G does not have cameras and can only go to 5.1.1

  • My battery needs service as it is not working for long.  Apple claims it is not a defective battery and that it is my fault since I had the computer for 2 1/2 years and have only run the battery down to empty 100 times.  It is my fault because I did no

    Con't
Apple claims that because I did not drain my battery frequently and kept it plugged in for extended periods of time, that it is my fault the battery is failing.  I disagree because I was not ever told to consistently drain my battery before recharging or not to keep it on and plugs in for extended periods of time.  I do keep my desktop computer on most of the time and that is why I have kept my Macbook air on for extended time periods.  I feel that Applecare should cover this battey issue and not charge me for replacing the battey.  I feel I should have been told to not keep my computer consistently running on with poweror the battery will fail.  Has anyone had this problem?  Apple should replace my battery under Apple care as my battery does not keep a charge anymore.
    I'll wait to hear.

You said---Apple claims that because I did not drain my battery frequently
You said---  I was not ever told to consistently drain my battery before recharging
You should never do that on purpose, whoever told you that had it wrong or you misunderstood something
Sure you dont have that backwards? thats exactly what you DONT want to do.
Did you often drain the battery very low? that would explain a lot.
Someone might have been misinformed about "battery calibration" regarding much older Macs with removable batteries (see bottom)
You said-----I do keep my desktop computer on most of the time and that is why I have kept my Macbook air on for extended time periods.
thats a problem there, youre not supposed to do that.
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
*If you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
And best "tip" is if its near a socket,...plug it in as long as you can (especially at home) since cycle count on the battery are the "miles that wear out the tires (battery)", however again, not plugged in all or most of the time.
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW  & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace
Battery calibration, battery memory, battery overcharging, battery training, …all these concepts are mostly holdovers from much older battery technology, and on older Apple portable Macbooks ranging from early nicads, NiMh and otherwise; and these practices do not apply to your lithium battery and its smart controllers.
Calibrating the battery on older Apple portable Macbooks with removable batteries.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14087
There is no calibration of current Apple portable Macbooks with built-in batteries.
    http://support.apple.com/ht1490
There is no battery calibration with current Apple portable Macbooks with built-in batteries. Lithium batteries have essentially a 0-‘memory’, and all such calibration involve the estimations fed to the system controller on the SOC (state of charge) of the battery over long periods of time as the battery degrades. The software based battery controller knows the battery's characteristics, or SOC and adjusts itself. This is why there is both no need and purpose to periodically deeply drain your macbook battery, since it doesn’t affect the characteristics of the battery, and further still deep discharges are something you should not do on purpose to any lithium battery.

  • My daughter forgot her passcode, phone is disabled.  I attempted restore procedures by placing phone in restore mode and syncing to original computer, but it still says I need the passcode and does not offer option to restore as new.  Verizon can't help.

My daughter forgot her passcode.  Phone is now disabled.  I attempted restore procedures by placing phone in restore mode and connected it to the computer / itunes with which it was originally synced.  itunes recognized phone in restore mode and said I must restore.  I clicked restore, restore and update.  Update began, itunes recognized the device by name and gave error message that stated I must have the passcode to restore.  There was no option to restore as new.  I attempted to restore the iphone 4s on another computer by instaling itunes, but same error messages appeared.  I contacted Verizon and they said they could not help me.  The nearest apple retail store is over 40 miles away.  PLEASE HELP!

    iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

Query Builder accepts not more than 60 fields in a single dataset. Once we try to enter 61st field - it pops up with a message. Is there some setting that we need to change.
    Please help me.

    Looks nice!
I understand what you've done now. You used the "Set Layer Visibility" command which sets the on/off state of all the layers at once. What you need is a more subtle approach, one that will only change the state of the specific layer associated with the button, not the rest of them (so that you could have multiple layers enabled at the same time). The way to do that is by using a script.
I wrote the script for you and applied it to the top-left counties (WILLIAMS and FULTON), in the attached file. You can now copy the actions I associated with those buttons to the rest of them, and it should work as you want it to.

  • Error -2003: a data handler needed by the movie could not be found

    Hello.
I just purchased QuickTime Pro and the MPEG-2 add-on for it, for the single purpose of transcoding some MPEG-2 recordings to H.264. However, when I try to open any of my MPEG-2 files in Quicktime, I get the message: "error -2003: a data handler needed by the movie could not be found (my-filename.mpg)"
I can play these files in a number of different free players--VLC, Mplayer, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer... but not in the player I paid $50 for.
    Can someone please help me?

That doesn't really help. Besides, I haven't even got to the point where I'm trying to export. I get this error message when I try to open the file. I can't even play back the clip.
And the MPEG-2 page clearly states: "The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component provides QuickTime users with the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed (a.k.a. muxed, where the audio and video tracks are interleaved together into one track) and non-multiplexed (a.k.a. elementary) streams."
Also, Streamclip crashes when I try to load my MPEG-2 clips, so that's not going to work (and even if it did, I am trying to find a simple way to take the HDTV content I've recorded off the air and get it onto my AppleTV--I want fewer steps, not more).
Looks like I'll have to waste some time calling customer service to get a refund, since there's no way to do this via the website.
