Spotlight ability to "browse" folders?

Hello,
I want to ask, if there is a possibility to browse folders in Spotlight, instead of opening them in the finder.
For example: I search for a music band name and get the band folder in the iTunes library as a result. Now I would like to browse inside this folder, choose the right album folder, browse into it and open the mp3 file… without leaving Spotlight or switch to another program… like I did with LaunchBar in the past. With LaunchBar you could open the folder in the finder or browse it in LaunchBar, till you have the right file to open.
Now I have to open the band folder, browse to the right mp3 file in the finder, open it and switch back to the program I was using before…

For what ever reason this works now again. Think it was related to the full Time Machine Backup, that prevented finder windows to open.

  • Spotlight missing files and folders?

Spotlight consistently misses certain files and entire folders, which I can find by rummaging through my finder, but can't find by searching in Spotlight. No these are not hidden files or library folders. Yes I have checked my privacy settings and used the privacy options to re-index spotlight. Why would Spotlight miss certain folders? Does it only search to a certain depth? How can I get Spotlight to search these folders?

    Step 1
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds | tail | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
    mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
    You can then quit Terminal.
    Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful.

Ability to rename folders in Launchpad in Mountain Lion Seems to be broken. Is there a fix?

    YouWinSomeYouLoseSome wrote:
    you still cannot rename folders.
I can... you cannot. I'm not sure why. It will not work on an app icon.
Are you sure you're doing this on a Folder?
Perhaps it is a function of Finder. You can try deleting Finder prefs to default.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • FormsCentral - Add Ability to Create Folders!!!

It would be great if Adobe added the ability to create folders, that way we can organize our forms!

    Hi,
If you are requesting to add the feature under Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for MAC\IOS then I can say that already forwarded this request to product group for further research and update. And if not then check the comment for “Randomtechguy”.
    Hope it helps!

  • YOSEMITE IS SLOW: How to browse folders quickly in Finder?

Hi all, I've noticed my Mac Mini mid2011 is slow at browsing folders and files in Finder. How can I make this process snapier? I just switched to browsing via "list mode" instead of Cover Flow and this seems to have helped. What else can I do?
    Thanks!

  • Lost the ability to browse any NAS or Servers

    Hi,
At school we have a NAS and a fileserver. My MBP has been connecting without any issues to these until yesterday. All of a sudden I cannot get access to them, and an error comes up stating that the server is unavialable or the IP address has changed. I have restared both the mac and fileserver and NAS - but still no luck. It connects with SMB protocol - and that was added to a favorite in my servers list and is unchanged. Also - I failed to connect to a NAS at home last night. I can't browse to it from the finder either. I am totally lost as to why I have suddenly lost all ability to browse any network attached storage.

Thanks for your help. The setup basically is straight forward. We have one network at school (mainly windows pcs) and there is a Windows File Server machine on the network that has been used for a while to hold files. We recently also bought a D-Link NAS as well (a bring your own disk type NAS). All are on the same network. Everything has been working faultlessly until yesterday - then error after error. The windows are able to connect fine to the fileserver - no problem. What throws me a bit is that I could not connect to my own NAS at home either. I was convinced yesterday that the fault was to do with the school network - so thought I would restart everything overnight (forgot anyway!!) but when I saw that the same issue that was at school was happening at home - realised that the issue was on the MBP.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 - Remove ability to modify folders and retain create collection

    Hi All,
I am working through Role Based administration permissions and running into some hold ups.  I am currently
attempting to segregate access for "Edge Administrators" in a way that they can only manage their own items.  essentially i would be setting up a lower level administrator role which has the ability to manage all functions excluding infrastructure
items.  I have pretty well configured it exactly as i need however i am not able to remove the ability to create and modify folders within the tree.  In most cases this would not be a big deal but i am trying to remove all possibility for these "Edge
Administrators" to modify anything outside of their assigned scopes and collections.
Has anyone had success with setting this sort of thing up?  i can remove the ability to manage folders however
this removes the ability for the admins to create collections.  any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JAK

Folders are not subject to RBA so there's no way to prevent that IIRC.

  • Do Spotlight Comments Work on Folders?

I noticed something that may just be a quirk. I've found that I can do a Spotlight search and find folders by name but I cannot find a folder by searching for a term that I've put into Spotlight comments for that folder. I seem to be able to find other files just fine by searching for Spotlight comments I've put on them, just not folders. Is this the way Spotlight works or am I just running into a strange quirk? Thanks.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

Strange. My Spotlight comments are still on the folder as originally enterred and Spotlight hasn't been able to find it using the comments as the search term/terms. It does find the folder when I search for the folder by its actual name.
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

  • Spotlight cannot see inside folders?

As a photographer I keep lots of pics inside folders on my desktop.
Spotlight can`t find most of them even when I type the exact name (eg_PAF2874.NEF) in the search window. However-check this out- when I rename the files, like let`s say "merda" (that`s portuguese for S*) spotlight does find them. I`ve already asked the apple support people if I should rename all my files with foul names:-).
Does anybody out there had a similar situation involving spotlight and folders?
    PA
PS. Yes, I did reindexed the files

Paolo. yes - many other users are having problems similar to yours. Just browse the "SPotllight" forum for a while and you'll find out.
It does seem that for busy people with a lot files and new ones being created all the time, and who have a need to find any one of these files (or folders) quickly and reliably whilst working, Spotlight is not reliable and is wasting your valuable work time.
So in the name of productivity, many users have adopted Easyfind instead.
Easyfind is freeware and you can find it here:

  • NMH305 unable to browse folders DLNA apps

    Hello all
Bit of a strange one.  Recently upgraded the firmware to 3.18.15.
I use a couple of iphone apps to stream music from the hub, namely 8player and buzz player.  They always had an option to browse / play the hub content by folder ( as well as the usual album/artist etc ) , but the moment i did the firmware upgrade the folder option disappeared.  Nothing changed with the apps, developers say all is ok so the only thing that is different is the firmware upgrade.
Any ideas why this should be the case, and is there any way to roll back to the old firmware?
    Many thanks
    Iggy

You can always revert the medihub’s firmware by the resetting the mediahub.Upgrading the mediahub’s firmware should not affect an app from accessing the mediahub’s content folder, since the mediahub is only a location to which the media files where saved. You can actually replicate this scenario by letting the app to browse the content folders of the media files saved on your computer though.

  • Ability to download folders/multi files from the file portal.

It would be nice to be able to multi select files and especially be nice to be able to select folders in the file portal to restore the entire tree structure under a folder (like a users profile folder).   Seems like it should be doable.  thanks.

    Dave,
I imagine that one issue that would have to be dealt with would be some kind of protection scheme. I post galleries on PBase, but not my higher-resolution "originals". PBase does, however, have a two-tiered protection scheme, password-protection, and non-public protection, so that if you post high-resolution files you can do so without the fear of people downloading them without some kind of permission. A lot of copyright marks can easily be cropped and, with a high enough resolution file, can be used without the info for print or whatever.
Anyway, you might want to include some kind of protection with the ability to download high-res files.

  • Spotlight fails to find folders

On a new iMac running 10.7.2 with two separate disks (SSD for Lion and apps and hard drive for user data) I have trouble to kick Spotlight into finding folders when searching by name. Spotlight indexed the hard drive twice but searches for folders by name for instance "lab" won't bring up any results, same for "lab folder" - only a search for "lab kind:folder" finally brings up the looked after folder. On a Macbook Air also running 10.7.2 I don't have this problem. What's wrong here? Is this a bug in Spotlight related to having user data on the secondary disk...?

Same here. I'd think that this is a bug. Did you file a bug report?

  • Spotlight - unable to open folders

This one is pretty new to me. After migrating to Lion, I'm not able to open Folders from Spotlight anymore. Files work fine, but clicking on one of the Folders from search result just brings this little animation - but no folder window. Anyone else seen this?

For what ever reason this works now again. Think it was related to the full Time Machine Backup, that prevented finder windows to open.

  • Delete some E90 browser folders?

There are some folders in the browser links that I cannot delete such as: Download graphics, Download sounds, App. Downloads, Download themes. I tried to delete them via sync with IE and Firefox but that doesn't work either. How to get rid of these useless folders? Thanks.
    E90, E61

Well...I have to scroll through them all the time when I am going to other folders that I use more often. I use the browser a lot.
It just seems silly. There is nothing useful in those folders, anyway, so it should be easy to simply delete them.

  • Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 version 2.1.48.30125 - can't browse folders

Hi, I have a Iomega StorCenter ix2-200.  Everything is working fine, I can browse and access folders using windows explorer.  BUT, as soon as I added it to our domain, if I access it from explorer using \\192.168.3.15\ it will prompt me for a password, and no password is working....so I cannot see any folder. I would like it to work as any NAS do, meaning I would like to see the folders and then set permissions on them. I do not want it to prompt for a password.  What am I doing wrong?  thank you!

    Hello lorenzo_phse,
Are there any local users stored on the NAS?
    Those credentials should work.
Have you tried mapping one of the shares from a Domain machine?
It might also be worthy to note here that the firmware version is fairly old and it is possible that there may just be a compatibility issue.
Here is a link to the support page for the ix2-200:
