Spotlight and cmd-F (find) and Tiger Cache Cleaner

OK it's taken me years, but I finally have a Mac with the "classic" applications selection menu (ASM) on the absolute far right - thanks to "ASM" shareware and Tiger Cache Cleaner to remove Spotlight.
But when I re-activate Spotlight, I see that it now has to spend 4 hours recataloging my HD. OK, not a problem, but I wonder if I use cmd-F "FIND" is this going to be much much slower than a cataloged SPOTLIGHT?
What about EasyFind 3.9?
And with cmd-F (FIND) (like with Spotlight) is there any way (other than cut and paste) to have the Mac WAIT until I've typed all my search letters BEFORE it starts going crazy and searching? I typed "S" and before I got to type "Steve" I had a zillion files that it had found...
OK and any comments on how safe this is to have used Tiger Cache Cleaner to remove Spotlight... appreciate that!
(now how to get rid of the Apple application menu in words and replace that (just to the right of the APPLE menu) with just the application LOGO to save Menu Bar space. I know a HAXIE does that, but Haxies mess-up and slow down my MacBook Intel core duo 2 ghz just tooooo much.
Thanks!
Steve

EasyFind works fine. It's slower than Spotlight because it doesn't use an index, but it can find things Spotlight can't.
To eliminate the "live" search behavior of Spotlight, use a third-party Spotlight front-end (there are several on versiontracker.com).

  • Disk Warrior & Tiger Cache Cleaner

    Hi,
I'm new to the mac world, and I've been introduced to the concept of regularly needing to:
    1. Use Disk Warrior
    2. Clear the "cache"
I'm stumped by the premise that an operating system needs two third party utilities to basically function normally.
Could someone explain exactly why these utilities are needed and seem to be must-haves in the mac world?
    Thanks,
    Nikhil

    IndianCowboy:
You've opened a can of worms, put 10 experienced mac users in a room and you'll get 12 opinions on maintenance and repair, and some will debate their methods quite vigorously. I've come to the conclusion that it really is individual, no two people have exactly the same software on their Mac or use it in the same way (you may not realize it but we each develop our own techniques).
In your case you came up against a serious directory problem that requires reinstalling the system, but this is rare. Overlapped files is very serious but also very rare and unlikely to be related to any maintenance or lack of it.
You'll need to play around a bit and find out what works best for you.
Personally, I don't run anything until my Mac starts acting up; gets slow, apps start crashing, or simply quirky behavior (or the rare kernal panic). Then, depending on how bad it is I'll run Cocktail (very similar to Tiger Cache Cleaner) or run Disk Warrior first then Cocktail. Where many problems start is in the caches which get rewritten constantly and so are volatile. Sometimes just a restart will fix these things or a Safe Boot (holding down the shift key). A safe boot runs some repairs and deletes all your font caches, so it's a good thing any time you are having font problems. And a simple restart will often fix many problems. It really takes some time to get the feel for what to do in each situation. I've gotten pretty good in figuring out what needs to be done with each bad behavior.
Before an update I will always run Disk Warrior and Cocktail first then repair permissions afterwards. This might be overkill but I have no problems with updates at all.
Or follow the advice others here have given, I bet most will work. Follow the link to Dr. Smoke's site, he has lots of very good info (including the problems you might run into with cache cleaning) and his method of rebuilding the launch services database is far better than any other, don't do this one with a utility, use the Doc's method.
But don't think of running Disk Warrior and cleaning caches as routine maintenance, it's repair for problems. The single most important thing you can do is clone your hard drive to an external Firewire drive. I don't put mine on a schedule for updating the clone but only do so when I know the system is purring like a kitten, so i know the clone is always in good shape. An added advantage to a clone is that it optimizes the disk (also known as defraging). Make a clone then restore it to your main hard drive and you have a perfectly defragged drive that runs very fast and is easier and faster than defragging software.

  • Tiger Cache Cleaner

Ran Tiger Cache Cleaner yesterday and it crashed. In doing so, I can no longer get past the Login Window when I restart my machine. (G4 dual 1.2ghzm, 1 gb sdram, OS10.4.7)
Reinstalled system 10.4 and still cannot login. Ran single user functions and got no error reports, used disk utility (from CD) and got no error/repair reports - help????

After running Tiger Cache Cleaner.app v.3.2.2 on OSX 10.4.8 for Caches deep cleaning with local, system and all users checked my computer has a kernel panic on shut down.
My second internal hard drive shows up late on restart with the error message that OS X did not shut down properly.

  • Busted Tiger Cache Cleaner

My laptop is about 1.5 years old. I just tried to run the Cache Cleaner for the first time. All I get is this message:
"This application cannot run on this system. (1049)"
I thought about reinstalling Tiger OSX, but hope you have ideas that will avoid such a long task.
    Thanks,
    A.

    Hi A;
What version of Tiger Cache Cleaner are you running?

  • Anyone have active download link for Tiger Cache Cleaner?

All links I find are either dead or download Leopard or Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner instead. Thanks.

I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Find and replace in files does not refresh when changes are made

Using RH10, I search for a term with the Find and Replace Options pod. I use the Find Results list as a reference only, and open each file from the Topic List. I do this instead of opening the topics from the Find Results tab because I want to see the WYSIWYG changes. Anyway, I make my edits and delete the search term from each topic. Then, to make sure I have done all the work, I run the search again. I expect to see no or at least fewer matches than before, but I still get some or all of the same results as before, even though I double-check the Design and HTML views of the topics and even check the source of a topic separately in Notepad, all indicating that the search term is gone from the topic.
There is some ridiculous lingering or echo going on. I make sure to select Look in: <Current Project>, and the paths of all the Find Results files are fine. How do you refresh the search so that this echo doesn't occur?
Also, I close the Find and Replace Options pod, reopen it and start the search again, and the same results are there.

    Hi there
To avoid the message about the file being modified, close all topics in the editor before commencing with any find and replace operations. The message is produced because you have the aforementioned topics open in the editor.
As you mention "Find and replace in files", I'm guessing you are referring to version 8. I just opened version 8 and performed a find and replace to confirm. There is a button allowing you to clear all.
On the clicking and dragging to create a link, it's never worked that way. You simply cannot drag from the Topic List pod to do it. But you can from the Project Manager pod. Perhaps you should consider submitting a Wish Form to ask for the ability to click and drag from the Topic List pod to create links.
As far as rearranging your topics into different folders, as long as you do it from inside RoboHelp you shouldn't be destroying any links. RoboHelp will update references for you as you move things around. The only issue is if you are automatically creating your TOC structure based on the project structure. But usually that's a one time shot. From there forward you just manage things using the TOC editor.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • In the new Numbers, can I find and replace within formulas like I used to in Numbers'09?

I use Numbers with quite long formulas with reference to other tables. With Numbers'09, it was extremely useful to copy formulas and then use "find and replace" to change the terms within.
Did they remove this option? I don't seem to be able to do that with the new Version.
If it's still there, where do I find it?
If it's not there.... why would they remove it.
    Thanks

Basically, I use it for payroll, taxes, and so on... I have one sheet per employee (which compiles their weekly payroll). I have then different sheets which makes the quarterly taxes calculation (state and federal taxes - 941, 940, W2, disability,  UI, paystubs, tracks payments and deadlines, etc... ). It took me awhile to write all of the formulas, but now it does everything for me.
When I add an employee. I have to add a sheet, but also add a line in the calculation sheets. Because all the employee sheets are the same format, all I need to do (or used to now) was to copy the line above, and just change the reference name of the employee sheet  within the formula (because there are several terms that are looked up, the reference name comes several time in the formula)... changing it manually is really annoying. What was taking me a minute or so, before, now takes me about 20 minutes. (between the different sheets, there are about between 75 to 100 changes in formulas per new employee - so the "find and replace" in formula only, was extremely useful).

  • Dreamweaver CS5 out of memory when trying to find and replace

Please help. I am running Dreamweaver CS5 on a windows 7 os. This has happened in previous versions as well. This is a new computer and a new install. There are no memory shortages on this machine.
I go to search for something, and select either folder or files in current site. It starts, then flashes the "out of memory" dialog box and stops the search. I have to force quit to leave the program.Over and over. Find and replace of a site or folder is a crucial function I use this program for!
    Thanks for any help

How big are the combined files in your Local Site folder?
My guess is that you have something really colossal such as server log files or something else that are causing DW to choke and freeze during its Find / Replace scan.
If you can identify the really huge files/folders in your site folder, you could use 'cloaking' to exclude them from DW operations.

  • How to I locate and delete duplicate documents and files

I am trying to clean up my macbook and want to find and delete duplicate documents and files.  How do I do this?

Finding duplicate files is something a lot of people do.  I do not understand why Apple hasn't built it as part of Smart Folders?  It would have taken a good coder only 1 hour of work to do that!
Pathetic of Apple, really pathetic!  A prime example of crippleware!

  • Deleted some files in finder - how do I clean up in Aperture?

I have deleted some files and folders in Finder and am wondering if there is a way to clean up in Aperture tooo????

This is true and was the first I thought of as well, but I would hesitate to recommend it in this particular case since the filtering also will show all files that are offline by other reasons (i.e. moved folder or images). Also, the folders he have deleted (showing up as projects or albums in Aperture) will not be deleted in the library so one have to go through all these anyway to find out where the empty ones are.
Hopefully there will not be a huge amount of images that were deleted so by looking into the different projects will give more control regarding what you are deleting from Aperture's library. Any file or project that are missing by other reasons would easily be recognized and could then be relocated first.

  • Finder and Spotlight 'stop' working

I have read a number of posts regarding these two applications not working at all, but need some help on the two applications ceasing to function after 3 - 5 searches.
Everytime I reboot they both work for a few times.
It is the same on another user account.
I have verfified permissions and disk.
    I have sudo mdsk E:
I have deleted the plist for both.
    I have run Yasu...
And still I get the same issue, they both work for a few searches then Spotlight just returns nothing and Finder has to be force quit.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I've suddenly begun to experience spinning beach-balls in the Finder when trying to open files. Having just yesterday upgraded from a PowerPC iMac to an Intel iMac where I never experienced these issues, I was deflated to say the least.
In the Console I see errors of the kind...
    254: Can't checkin with server named com.apple.metadata.mdserver, error 0x10000004
...and sometimes references to "mds" not being found/running.
It was all grinding my system to a halt. I tried many of the same things that you read on this forum to no avail.
My solution was to download an application called "Disable Tiger Features" (you can find it on MacUpdate.)
I ran this, elected to disable Spotlight completely, rebooted and voila! I have my Finder back again. Of course, anything that relies on SpotLight to any degree (Finder...Mail...others?) will no doubt be impacted, but at least I can use my machine again now.
    Tony.

  • Dialog box says-"Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. ... purge central cache" For one, I can't find the central cache and two, I've purged the cache in bridge. Shouldn't that help.

Our Bridge has been acting very strange. It keeps giving a dialog box of "Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. ... purge central cache" For one, I can't find the central cache and two, I've purged the cache in bridge. Shouldn't that help? There's just all kinds of weird stuff going on. I suppose it does have something to do with the central cache, so maybe someone can tell me where to find it.
When I use the burn/dodge tool sometimes it drags and staggers and takes forever to complete whatever I'm burning/dodging. When I try to delete an image from the dock, it won't disappear but it won't display either.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The Central Cache is the Bridge Cache.
It's referred as the Central Cache to differentiate it from the individual folder's cache or even the individual image cache.

    Janieburmy,
You can always deauthorize all your machines from your store account page — just log in and view your account settings and there's a button to deauth all your machines. Which just means for the other machines, it will ask you for your store ID / password the next time you play a purchased song.
So, let's try the filter experiment.
On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.
Find the heading HKEYLOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
    Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
    Find the heading Control. Click
    Find the heading Class. Click
Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click
Go up to the Registry menu and select "Export Registry File... command. Make sure the "Selected Branch" radio button is checked and save that off somewhere that you can find it.
    Delete the key named LowerFilter.
Select the key named UpperFilter, right click, select "modify". Then edit the text in the dialog to just say "GEARAspiWDM" followed by hitting the return key, the return after the word is important.
Then reboot, and see what iTunes does.
To get the system back to its previous state. Run Regedit again and use the Registry menu -> Import Registry File... command and select the file that you saved off in the first section.
I'm particularly interested in getting rid of the "AFS2K" driver in the chain — that's a old driver from a company that hasn't existed in years.
To answer your last question, why am I doing this?... I'm paying off a karmic debt. And someday we'll start that Tequila for Toonz paypal account and then I'll be set.
